  • Take a stroll through the Alaskan forest with us and see the wonders it has to offer. Our host is Bill White, an expert mushroom hunter and a passionate amateur mycologist who has been a member of the FFSC (Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz) for almost 40 years. He will introduce a few species of mushrooms common to North America and Alaska, such as Boletus edulis, Birch bolete (Leccinum scabrum), Gypsy mushroom (Cortinarius caperatus), and Lion's Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) as well as others.

    I live in Alaska’s central interior, even though it’s a bit dryer than Kenai , my hopes are still high as I try to identify some of the mushrooms you’ve presented. Great info. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of Alaska’s mushrooms.

    Pick the mushrooms. Its a never ending supply. In Anchorage a bit North, we have mushrooms that look like those cake stand displays that are enormous. Pounds each. Once they are above the mycelia, they are useless to trees. Look for bugs near the cap. Mushrooms are mostly water and bugs love their microclimates.

  • @18IMAMGODINA
    @18IMAMGODINA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You dont cut boletes you twist them so the flesh is not in contact with air or the micelium will get infected..
    Firstly you bang the top to release spores and twist and break the bottom at the base..this way micelium is not disturbed and the flesh will not get infected..

      @@samanthablumenkonig7995 I am not that familiar with english terminology for mushrooms , maybe you missunderstood me , the base of a mushroom is connected to a "root" system its not really roots its more like branches on a tree since mushroom is like a fruit on a tree, but if you cut a part of mushroom and leave it like that in air it can infect the entire underground buildup of the "roots" and potentially cause lower mushroom growth in that area .
      Actually majority of mushrooms should be pulled from the base even though a lot of people say that chanterelles need to be cut i even think they need to be pulled out from the base and then pad the dirt where you picked it up.
      I am not calling anyone out im just sharing my thought.

    I was introduced to the True Morel by my cousin in Iowa. Anyway, I have mushroom hunted in Anchorage for many years now and know plenty edibles here. As well I found you can eat the Amanitas as well by overcooking it. I still eat mushrooms but they are not my favorite food as their preparation is somewhat toilsome and they contain little protein. It makes sense I collect less as I have some dehydrated I need to eat and I'm not into cultivation as I had once pondered pursuing. Thanks for taking me mushroom hunting with you.

    There is no need to cut any mushrooms, you will not hurt the mycelium by twisting them. Especially boletes, as you're leaving half of the stem behind. Plus you may cause harm by cutting them as the residual flesh will rott away and cause an infection to the mycelium.
