I've been watching these videos for a couple weeks and am so glad I came across them. In the chaos of this present world, I've discovered a calm and intelligent viewing experience....I marvel at each creation! I thank you so much for the knowledge you share. I came across a cheap juniper of some type and purchased it. Based on these videos, I decided to dig down to expose more trunk (and discovered twisty thick roots), then trimmed here and there and practiced wiring. Half of the shrub ended up cut off, but there are plenty of 'sacrificial' branches left to thicken the trunk. Great practice; ugly at the moment, but maybe later something will come out of it. Thank you for the pleasure you give us!

Great videoing by Josh….nice close ups of wiring, and he holds branches out of the way so we can see exactly what’s being done. Thank you, also, for telling the time of this work (late July). It helps .

Great tips for trimming the tips. The benefit of you recording your thought process is I can go back and use these videos as a guide. If we were in the club you would only have a handful of people with a handful of foggy memories lost to time. Keep on sharing.

This is my first year of trying to be "logical" when it comes to not fearing my decision to cut thicker branches. I have in the past, cut larger branches thinking I am ruining the tree by taking away such older growth, but am learning that in many cases, the overall impression can be improved by not being selfish. Learning to envision an apex is still quite hard for me, when styling. I find myself always completely blown away by "organic" or "abstract" stylings, where vision is needed more. I have a VERY boring tendency to style, or TRY to style in very boring equilateral, upright styles. Seeing a possibility BEYOND the obvious, is what I wish I could develop myself. Great work on this...very impressive.

Can you please do a video where you make a really dramatic cut to a thick trunk? You’ve mentioned it a few times in the past and I always have such a difficult time imagining how you make the cut on a trunk that thick and not have it look like a tiny lumberjack sawed half the tree off. Or maybe that’s how it’s supposed to look. Would be cool to see how you do it and how it turns out.

I think what happens is it does appear to be a harsh cut for a few years, but with time that corner rounds off to a bend, while also leaving a radically thinner leader when compared to the trunk which creates good taper.

Hi Peter I do find it a shame that you were not able to style the tree as you would have preferred as you said the possibilities are endless and I think shortening the tree and making it more compact and emphasise the thickness of the trunk would have been a good solution, but the customers wishes must come first, pity he didn’t give you freedom to do what you would like to do, I could feel your frustration throughout the video of not being able to be more drastic with the design.

I have a question about a Japanese cherry blossom I’ve been growing from a seed. It’s about six months old and I want to bonsai it or at least make it so that it doesn’t grow any higher than 2 feet. I haven’t pruned it at all and I want to know the best way to go about it. It has one leading branch growing upward and multiple branches growing all over the trunk in every direction, those branches seem to be producing many new ones on them as well. What would be the best way to go about bonsaing it? I leaving the tiny branches around the base to make it bigger but I don’t know how else to make it grow outward
