Hi Bonsai Empire, I've been eager to see an update on this tree for 2 years now! Can you please make a follow up or even post some photos on other socials 😊
Ok, the bonsai tree is nice but the real work of art is the Japanese style garden in the background. 😍 No offense but I don’t think I would even bother with trees in pots if I had such a dream garden to spend my time in. 😁😉
Not removing a lot of foliage will keep the tree strong, shortening the time it will take towards establishing a mature bonsai design. We've had the tree for about 10 years before styling.
How does it go from growing out the trunk to short again? That's what I am having trouble grasping that for conifers. Especially if you are supposed to let it grow unfettered till the trunk is as thick as you want it. I understand trunk chopping for deciduous treea but how does it go for juni and other conifers? I have nursery trees that have been growing for 1-2 years that are already over 5 feet tall they are in baskets and weren't small to begin with but how do you get it back to a short tree with thick trunk?
you need to decandle/candle prune on pines and prune on junipers so they backbud lower on the trunk. Once those branches have developed enough, then you cut/jin the top of the trunk. If you're having a hard time getting backbuds lower on the tree, you can still cut the trunk and bend the higher branches down, to run closer to the trunk.
Hello, Can you say us which cultivar is that nice Chinese Juniper? Iam looking for similar tree but cant decided which cultivar will be the most suitable.
Hi! Beginner here. Is it possible to create a bonsai out of a Buffalo Juniper of about a year old? It is still small and the trunk is not as thick as that. I am thinking that maybe I could start trying and learning bonsais with smaller trees in smaller pots.
Only if the tree is very healthy - we have had this tree for over a decade and the tree was already growing in a small pot and was very healthy. Usually we advise to repot in the next spring (not at the same time).
This is a bit of a random question, but what city is this place located in? I'm guessing that it's in Japan. I'm thinking about moving there. Any advice for an American moving to Japan that is looking for a town that has nice gardens like this? Thank you
No need to move to Japan - there's amazing Japanese gardens in Europe, US, etc. One very nice one is in Portland, and the location where this video was shot is near The Hague.
As soon as you cut that first branch I told myself “if that was my tree it would be dead” No matter what I do except wiring Chinese juniper it dies. I could cut a branch, fix roots, over water or under water. No matter what they always end up dead I have a beautiful Chinese juniper that I’ve made windswept and I’m scared to repot it or even touch the foliage as I don’t want this one to die. I know it’s important to buy trees and learn by growing and killing accidentally but I know this one has so much potential. Can someone point me in the direction to Chinese juniper tips that is very extensive?
This is a standard Juniperus chinensis - I personally think any Juniper would do well, though some species have finer foliage. If you like the tree, go for it!
In my experience you can only buy 20 year old raw material like this from bonsai specialists and it’s expensive because of its age. What he didn’t show you was the years of work to get it to this stage.
Bonsai retailers will have this kind of material. We've had the tree for almost a decade so it was strong, healthy and well established in the pot already - which is important.

I´m in love with the Juniperus Chinensis for sooo long and THAT tree is a Banger! Would kill for a tree like that!
the garden looks amazing
You're an inspiration. We're looking for property where Bald Cyprus grows so I will be on the hunt for something great, thanks again!
Awesome! Thank you!
Finished product looks amazing. Well done.
Thank you!
My favorite channel
Super clever how you cut around the base of the Jin before stripping the bark. This way it won't tear down the trunkline in your design
The Jin? Could you clarify around what time you're looking at? Is it when he's peeling the thicker branch?
Wonderful teaching.... Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Finished product looks amazing. Thank you!

It’s now September in central piedmont North Carolina with winter on the way, does it matter when to start a first time Juniper project?
Please make one about sageretia theezans

I might have kept some of the lower growth, seems like he cut too much but it was done quite skillful. These videos are quite well done
It will level out when the braches grow more again
Thanks Andrew, I see your point, like Max in the comments mentioned, the tree will fill out now in spring and appear much fuller.

Hello, Can you say us which cultivar is that nice Chinese Juniper? Iam looking for similar tree but cant decided which cultivar will be the most suitable.
Juniper chinensis. Shimpaku or sargentii
How do you grow such a perfect short and thick trunk???
By letting it grow in a large container and using sacrifice apexes and branches - It took me a decade :)
Hi! Beginner here. Is it possible to create a bonsai out of a Buffalo Juniper of about a year old? It is still small and the trunk is not as thick as that. I am thinking that maybe I could start trying and learning bonsais with smaller trees in smaller pots.
Sure could! Look into mame and shohin stylings if you're interested in creating bonsai with younger material.
What is the specific name of this type of juniper, please. Trying to decide if you are teaching the tree or if it is teaching you.
Hi Larry, it's a Juniperus chinensis. And the teaching goes both ways :-)
Es recomendable hacer todo junto ?
Poda diseño y transplante ?
Only if the tree is very healthy - we have had this tree for over a decade and the tree was already growing in a small pot and was very healthy. Usually we advise to repot in the next spring (not at the same time).
Video nice
Ziet er goed uit 👍 hoelang blijft de ijzerdraad zitten?
Hi Dennis, we keep a close eye on the wire - usually in spring it would be on for 1-2 months or so.
This is a bit of a random question, but what city is this place located in? I'm guessing that it's in Japan. I'm thinking about moving there. Any advice for an American moving to Japan that is looking for a town that has nice gardens like this? Thank you

@Bonsai Empire what type of juniper is this?
Esplendido,junyperos!
How long does the wire stay on for?
Depends - usually a few months
Where do you get material like that here in the US?
Material like this - at a bonsai nursery. Here's a map: www.bonsaiempire.com/locations
Hadiirrr😍😍😍

Perhaps this helps? www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/juniper
What species of Juniper is this? Is Juniperus Virginiana suitable?
This is a standard Juniperus chinensis - I personally think any Juniper would do well, though some species have finer foliage. If you like the tree, go for it!
Waoow amazing..😁😁
Thanks 🤗
Nice. Where can I buy this kind of material?

How can we water it if the center of the root has organic soil and the outside has inorganic soil?
Your watering will be the same - water when the plant needs it and when you water do so thoroughly to make sure all soil/substrate is wet.
In nature, I’ve never seen a Juniper with the shape you gave it...
👏👏👏
Very nice 😊 👍🏿👍🏿🌈🌈🌈🔥🔥🔥😍🌿🌳🌴
