  • A hilarious and informative chat with my old friends Stan & Jerry Keyawa, owners of the legendary Professional Drum Shop in Hollywood, CA, founded in 1959 by their step-dad, Bob Yeager. Stan and Jerry talk about the affect the "Beatle Boom" had on Pro Drum during the 1960s, as well as their incredible history.

I was able to visit Pro Drum a few years back. It was loud, cramped, dusty and cluttered. In other words, just perfect.

Fabulous store, great people that treat everyone equally. Probably the best in the world if you take in all the elements.

Thank you John! Stan & Jerry don't know me but I've been going there for years. They ALWAYS have everything that you would want. I needed 2 28" bass drum heads and figured I'd have to have them order the heads but of course they had them in stock! Who has that kind of inventory? Pro Drum does. They've also done repairs for me and given me advice on vintage gear. They are THE place to go. I loved watching this episode so much I bought $100 worth of swag at the online store!

According to Bill Ludwig II's book "The making of a drum company", The relationship didn't end well: Ludwig had specified "thinner" than standard 602 models (NOT the Standard cymbals) to be shipped to the U.S. Understandably, they had issues with cracked cymbals, Ludwig supposedly replaced 4,000 cymbals free of charge, they also informed Paiste of the issue.
Robert and Toomas flew to Chicago to inspect the cymbals, they were also taken to a show, after watching the drummer crack a cymbal on stage during the performance, they informed Bill Ludwig the drummers were hitting the cymbals too hard and could not replace them as they were not defective! Eventually Ludwig stopped all new orders and ended up giving away the rest of thier 602 inventory. Robert Paiste's version is a little different, but the bottom line was Ludwig specified thinner 602's, young drummers were playing the cymbals way too hard and breaking them!

Les Butts was with HSS when I worked in music retail. I think he went to Pearl.
