Another interesting interview. That band sounded very different when he was let go by Mr Petty. Ferrone is a phenomenal musician. Is tithe case that most bands sound different when drummers are replaced, the groove just sits different. Like Sorum in Guns n Roses or even Jordan in the Stones touring band. Not saying any is better or worse, just different in the pulse. As a bass player you feel it instantly when drummers change in bands.

What an amazing video of a truly amazing drummer! I've always felt like Aynsley was SO important in every band he joined-even Frank upped his game=look at the monster drummers he had from Aynsley onward (without criticism of Jimmy Carl Black, Billy Mundi and Arthur Tripp, who came before, etc) but, Ralph Humphrey, Chester Thompson, Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman, Vinnie Colaiuta??? Just amazing, and it all started to bloom after his time with Aynsley Dunbar (and the Underwoods)...I wish you would have asked him a little bit more about Frank and 200 Motels plus what that was like playing in front of Ringo and Keith Moon-and his thoughts on those two icons...and you started to talk about the famous Hendrix audition, but you both got sidetracked, but I would have loved to have heard his memories and impressions about that period, and what he thought of Mitch Mitchell (his would-be archived rival)

Zane's book about Tom Petty presents an interesting take on the drumming performances on Damn the Torpedoes. Keltner seemed to be around a lot and played percussion. The HB were an unhappy bunch by 1979 for a whole number of reasons

Another great interview, John. Like so many famous drummers you've interviewed in recent years, Stan Lynch comes across as being so humble. I appreciate the nostalgia of how those iconic records were created back then, with band members playing off of one another rather than as an isolated track recorded in Pro Tools. I'm very much looking forward to Part 2. By the way, was that a vintage Ludwig kit set up behind Stan?

I'm in the middle of the interview, but I had to hit pause so I could say,"Thanks, John, for this episode!" Stan is one of my all-time favorite drummers. He really made an impression on me when I saw him and the band performing on the Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder in the early 80's. There's so much i can say but ultimately it comes down to Stan's feel. Like another of my favorites Charlie Watts, Stan plays for the song. So enough of my rambling just play the music and that'll tell you all you need to know about Stan's greatness. Thanks again John, incredible interview!

Beautiful episode - somehow, the true 'greats' like Gene are always about playing for the song, never about their own status or ego and seem genuinely surprised but touched by the appreciation of what they've contributed. I've listened to the Aretha Franklin track a lot over the years - it's not an easy song to play at all and I'm always impressed by just how 'right' the drums are all the way through . . .

I have a very fond memory of getting to sit with Jim Gordon and Larry Knechtel to lay down some basic tracks at RCA B. Both were completely gracious. He was so patient as to explain to me as a non-drummer how he set up his toms to nail the Walrus fills we had in mind, Had I not been so green I should have just let him run with it.
