  • My guest is legendary Los Angeles studio drummer Steve Schaeffer. In this episode we talk about Steve's jazz background, moving to Los Angeles in the late 1960s and his break into TV and film work, thanks to the recommendation of his friend and mentor, the great Shelly Manne. By the mid 1970s, Steve was a first call session player for television and film scores and a permanent fixture on the LA recording scene. It's easier to name the TV shows and films he didn't record. Steve also has over 320 album credits. So come along for the ride and please subscribe!

Steve is truly a legend. He’s one of those musicians that you may not know by name but have most definitely heard his playing. He is the drummer on the sound tracks of our lives!

Thanks for the great interview John! Steve is such a humble man! I would love to hear more about his drumming gear through the years in the studio. I’ll never forget that issue of MD with Steve’s interview! Thanks

Quite the collection of work for Steve there, John. Of course, I could never forget the CHiPs theme, whether you liked it or not! To be a fly on the wall in studios in those days...

Great interview with a fantastic drummer. One query though: I always thought Jim Gordon played drums on the Knight Rider theme (in what would’ve been one of his last sessions)?
