Everything has to be a competition for people. I don't get it. They're all great. Why can't people just appreciate good playing instead of comparing them to each other all the time? Each is excellent at what they do. Chill with the hate and just enjoy some music.
There's nothing wrong with debating as long as people stay civil. Saying this guitar player is the best and everyone else fucking sucks is just dumb and selfish, of course. But there is nothing wrong with claiming your favorite guitar player, with another person claiming theirs, while comparing and contrasting the guitar players flaws and strengths; you might actually learn something and find a new favorite artist if you keep an open mind. I debate with my friends all the time about our favorite guitar album, and we just end up listening to all the records and explore them together. Just because people have a difference of opinions doesn't mean there is hate involved. A healthy amount of competitiveness is what makes our people and our country great; we must push each other to be better.
Jay Miguel It's not hard to understand at all. G3 is always about technical proficiency (and music of course), so comparisons are inevitable. I would argue that discussions of technical proficiency pretty much demand comparisons. I agree though that it is pointless trying to identify who is 'the best' in a holistic sense. FWIW, I think Guthrie is the all-rounder with more tricks up his sleeve than most, but the fact that he is not as well-known for his compositions as Satch and Vai are tells you something. To be fair though, he only has one solo album.
What I noticed was how much Guthrie was enjoying how well Steve and Joe work together. They have this thing so well covered and yet Guthrie's input fitted in perfect.
@@Kweesh that is because he immitates others without establishing his own craft. he can play all music flawlessly but he lacks the power to make his own music that could struck the hearts of other people besides the music circle .
No disrespect for other G3 incarnations, mind you, but, man, GG brings a whole new level of musicianship. Does anyone know where to find a full concert of this G3 tour? It's a pity that we can only enjoy isolated songs, nice as it is, on the other hand, though
And solos the others in G3 always forget about the songs they are playing and have a wank fest instead actually follow in the feel of the songs and chords. I've never been to a G3 concert becuase of that. Ego stroking for the rest of them.
I agree. Im a big fan of all 3 of these guys, and as a guitarist myself I felt his solo fit the song the best. Govan and Steve are both incredible, but Satriani played it perfectly.
my hero steve Vai , 10 years a go , everyday listen to he's music he's guitar is naver die thank's for the video p.s. i like Guthrie Govan but my hero is him ....
When it's about blues, Satriani is definitely the best among them. He creates spaces between notes and let them breed. It doesn't matter how many notes you can play but the amount of emotion you're able to put in each one of them. I respect Vai and was a fan for many years but got kind of tired of his acrobacies. GG is an outstanding musician but an young one yet, and no one can blame him for that :). Joe today is the best to my ears.
Govan might have had the fastest solo but damn satch can lay that real soulful blues solo down better than the other two by far. His not needing to play every note under the sun is what i love about him.
Sure they would. Beck, Clapton, Page, Gilmour, May, all would have been around if Hendrix wasn't. And everyone else would have been as well. Plenty of guitar players don't owe a lot to Hendrix.
Dan D Being able to play everything isn’t the be all and end all, none of these can play with feel of Hendrix or write the same songs or sing like him . Although they are amazing at what they do they won’t be as well renowned as Hendrix.
Dan D you need to understand the patterns and evolution of music dude. Hendrix was around during the time where it was all about pushing blues licks to the max, getting the most you can put of the 1-4-5. But he also went beyond that with really creative songs progression and lyric wise. He's personally made me get lost in the crevice of my own mind and imagination when I close my eyes and listen to Hendrix. I never criticize anyone on their opinion but you really pissed me off, bc I feel like you're trying to be a little crap by talking down on Hendrix on a Hendrix song post. Pay respect where it's due man, all those greats you mentioned respected the fuck out of Hendrix. Bc that's just what you do, any musician getting up to play for u instantly deserves respect bc that's not easy man, they're opening themselves up for u in hopes that you'll enjoy it. Anyway, these days the thing is to make any fuckin noise you can on the guitar, the weirder the better. Which is awesome all theee of these guys rock!!! But they wouldn't exist if someone didn't take the first step into playing as fast as they can for a change and focusing far more on technique as opposed to feel. Which honestly has always annoyed me, it's always sounded like they're were trying too hard. Now I feel like it's finally become balanced with melodic approach and awesome other world technique. Players evolve from other players, they don't just pop out of nowhere u turd. Overall just quit being a fuckin bitch and don't fuck with Hendrix on any post friend, I will find u.... and I will reply long as fuck again....
When Jeff Beck covered this my jaw hit the floor. Space between the notes man. The end. Everyones covers this, but they totally miss the essence of the word feel. Thats what made Jimi so special.
Oh noooo a guitarist played more notes in a bar that you can count on both hands, that means they have no feel no this is just wrong. They took this song and made it their own, this isn't about the original feel. Also all three of these players have more feel in their left testicle than we will ever achieve while playing the instrument
Great performance here! Interesting to read the comments about 'who thought who was best' etc. I personally don't think it's possible to judge. Music is great because it appeals to everyone in a totally different way. For instance I thought Vai's vocals were great. I'm sure most people on here are thinking who gives a shit about vocals???..... well i do!! What I will say about the solo's was each player bought their personality in to each solo! Govan with his immense technical ability and thoughtful soloing! Vai with his incredible ability to sustain a note, his crazy knowledge of the force and his tremolo work always blows me away and lastly Satch! This guy is tone!! I love a player who thinks about tone. Watch you play is of course so important but if you've got great tone you can play pentatonic scales as Satch does here and it sounds beautiful! Oh and well done to the rest of the band who have to stand and not get noticed all night!! :D
Joe always playing with feeling and respectfull of the subject. vai, always the spokesman of guitaristic shred competition in live show.....beh.... guthrie, modern phrasing and approach, always reinventing himself through a standart. outstanding and intense.
Clapton is alive!!! Gut gives the prolonge to the guitar in 21st ry.. it is like box, you can never hold the title, but, if you really good, the New gen will remember you
Why is everyone here saying Satriani played the best solo? First of all, you can’t really compare guitar solos by their greatness. And secondly, in my Opinion Guthrie‘s solo was even more incredible than Joe‘s. Guthrie‘s feel, phrasing and the freshness of his melodies is just outstanding. There’s not a lot of space to overcome Guthrie...
Gosh I love them all but for this particular song, I think Vai's solo did most for me musically. I feel it fit the vibe of the song most by far. But still... wowzers, Guthrie 👍🏼
I was experiencing a moment of awe, blown away as I was by these masters...and then I saw Joe's forearms. Dude, it's called a razor. You look like the missing link.
Technicality levels: 9001 Musical Synergy Levels: Non existent. Guthrie tried to bring the song back to it's musical essence, Vai was focusing more on standing out than fitting in and Satch just wanted everyone to get along.
Everyone rushed to conclude this guitar performance. Joe & Steve they play G3 characters. If you see and listen to the whole show, G3 Joe & Steve will play it like this. And this is very different from Solo (their songs) they are sold in the market. Instead they are smart, can play 2 characters that are not their original characters at all (the original is on a cassette) Now while Guthrie, the type of ability & lick displayed is exactly the same as the solo (recording tape) sold in the market. Here indeed Guthrie looks aggressive, but Joe & Steve still don't get out of the G3 (Solid) character path. So ... ?? It's up to you to judge what? To be sure, they are all good at playing Guitar.

The way Satriani and Vai influenced players in the 80s and 90s is what Guthrie Govan is doing to our generation. I believe there is a difference of around 2 decades between them. Place Tony Iommi and Jimmy Page next to Steve Vai in a concert in the 80s. We'd say Steve Vai is God then. The new generation will always be way ahead than the previous.
