    I'm sure Guthrie LOVED this! He loves playing WITH musicians on stage, no overplaying, no showing of, just making the best music possible while talking through instruments on stage. What a great performance! Really touched my heart.

    Watching Guthrie allow the Korean player to show off with out retaliating and shredding him into oblivion shows a lot of class on his part.

      Guthrie doesn´t need to show off or shred his ass to demonstrate his abilities, I think that`s what is special about him

      IMHO the Jimi's version is the best by far. The SVR's one is the second, though...

    • @CreamFreshCream
      @CreamFreshCream 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to correct myself. The two versions can't be fairly compared, because Stevie's version is pure instrumental perfection, while Jimi's version is classic rock song. Though the Jimi's one has some kind of mystic in it, can't really explain it, it's just the way I feel it... I just listened to Stevie's version and I was blown away once again. It's just pure guitar masterpiece by genial virtuoso!

      What are you talking about? They were in perfect concert, albeit some conflict in the sonic output, i.e. mixing was a little off.
      Also what is this presumption that Jeon was trying to "show off"? The whole thing was melody based and very purposeful. And the purpose clearly wasn't "showing off".

    What impresses me with Guthrie is the way he just gives the other guitarist space to shred. It shows such musical maturity and when you are that good - you don't really have to try.

  • @tastefulphrasing

    I love how Guthrie doesn't try to hog the stage. He knows that these guys on stage with him idolize him, and he still gives them their spotlight. He is such a class act. That is another big reason why he is the best.

    Well, at his clinic in Bangalore last year, Lord Guthrie did mention that there are some tunes one must never shred over. He mentioned Little Wing by name, as one of those.
    However, for the guitar player who's playing with Him here, this guy is sharing the stage with Lord GG, probably the greatest guitar player of the modern era, so to be fair to him, he maybe wanted to showcase his musicianship within the time allocated. So I get his point of view as well.

    I love how when guthrie is playing with another guitarist, he usually plays the complete opposite of whatever shredding nonsense they're trying to pull off and plays something melodic and beautiful. Doesn't try and be a a showoff or prove he's better.

    • @pabloguazzotti2260
      @pabloguazzotti2260 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, he actually did destroy him, by pulling a magnificent sensitive and smart soloing while the other guy showed little more than advanced technique. Also, Guthrie acknowledges the Korean guy with his glance all the time in evidence of his true humbleess. Big guy.

    • @Elemy69
      @Elemy69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Let's be fair, that Korean guitarist played a pretty good solo, and it didn't sound like shredding nonsense to me. Guthrie also likes to play fast notes in his solos, nothing wrong with that. Music doesn't have to be a competition. You guys sound like you're circlejerking over Guthrie just for the sake of it.
      They both played well and showed mutual respect, and that's what music is about.

  • @FlaxeMusic
    @FlaxeMusic 10 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    The Korean guy's tone and playing contrasts Guthrie, yes, because he is not the same person. Regardless, why would having a similar tone make any sense in a live environment? How many gigs have you been to where the combined 2 guitarists and bassist end up sounding like fucking mush, ask yourself that. Notice at 7:00 how well they can independently be heard, without one taking precedence? Huh, I wonder why the fuck that is? And just because they planned the form, texturally, around big dynamic shifts doesn't mean the Korean guy tried to "outshred" Guthrie or play it up, he's obviously got some radical chops, certainly better than everyone here, and his playing is not pentatonic wankery or mindless speedshred either, it's as harmonically diverse as he can make it for a chord structure like this.
    Contrast, texture, call and response, dynamics, look them up, educate yourselves, and for fuck sake, stop thinking like guitarists (and children) and start thinking like musicians.

    Use names, not “Asian guy”. I can see how people think than Jeon In Hyuk was playing out too much, but that’s exactly what Hendrix did. Guthrie set the perfect contrast for someone to let loose. He knew it. Hendrix let loose himself and people followed. You can argue but Jimi literally played a guitar behind his head, and then with his teeth. and then lit it on fire. Proving you can give birth to sound before killing it and still make it beautiful.

      for sure, but go watch any of the G3 jams, or anybody with guthrie, its like, they know they cant beat his soulful melodies, so they take the low road and try and out do him with shred technique, ending up making themselves look immature...serious backfire, everytime.

    • @still2weirdfoU
      @still2weirdfoU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guthrie wasn’t reluctantly agreeing, he was inferring the sound the other guy ventured towards and contrasted perfectly. Hendrix himself went from ballads to literally burning guitars on stage. No hints, just balance.

    I'm Korean, but these Korean musicians Guthrie plays with all make us seem like such egotistical musicians. The guitarist here didn't seem to understand the feel that Guthrie was going for and just went at it. I saw this bassist here in Guthrie's Smoke on the Water video, and it seemed like he just went and took a solo when he wasn't even supposed to, not to mention he tried to show off all his slapping technique at once. And the other Korean guitarist Guthrie plays with in other videos does a similar thing. It seems like Guthrie just watches in exasperation at times.

      Huh. I didn't really get that impression. I thought the first guitarist played very well, and Guthrie decided to play in a more quiet manner to contrast the already great, but louder solo that just happened. An amazing performance from all the parties involved, I think.

      I got the same impression tbh. And I was born in Korea as well. Idk, I was never into Korean guitarists (at least when I was back home, I wasn't enthusiastic enough to research other players and get inspired and stuff) so I can't comment with absolute confidence but I've been listening to Guthrie for a while and I know his playing. From my viewpoint, Ellis nailed my first impression on this performance...

    all these criticisms in the comment about the korean guitarist yet you all are observers and not the people playing on the stage, do you know how nervous anyone would be to play on stage with Guthrie? I think the korean guitarist did an excellent job even though he had some slip ups here and there. And the way Guthrie plays with other musicians, especially jams with other guitarists is that he always gives them space and trys to complement as much what they are doing. Not everyone can be at the same technical or melodic prowess as Guthrie is, please stop making it some kind of competition and just simply see that these guys are all having fun and not at all trying to compete against each other.
    Any musician is able to see that in the video.

    ...Is it just me, or is the Korean using Guthrie's Signature Suhr as a guitar? Wicked awesome! =D

    I agree he played quite well, and his solo was really incredible. But I think this video is a great example of how Guthrie really plays without any sense of ego or any attempts to show off. He is just trying to make the absolute best music possible, while it seemed jeon in hyuk was really attempting to 'outplay' Guthrie, or maybe just play on his level. And how does Guthrie follow the craziness? He plays a chorus of chords to calm the mood down! One of the best musicians of all time.

    He seems to be just as great of a person as he as a guitar player.

      No its the suhr electronics. Idk i noticed even in his clean tone his guitar automatically phases. Also i saw a rig breakdown vid that his pickups automatically phases. Or flangs.

    I think another brilliant thing about Guthrie is he doesn't seem full of himself at all.

    it's refreshing when players like guthrie and gilbert show their approval when they hear a lick that they like...i.e. 4:22
