Before you all laugh at the Town Car’s relatively low power output considering its 4.6 litre engine displacement and make some comment about your lawnmower making more power per litre, what you need to understand is this: the Town Car isn’t about speed or horsepower or quarter mile times. It’s all about delivering a smooth, comfortable and luxurious ride at any speed, and the Town Car delivers this in spades. It’s because of this that I like to think of the Town Car as a ‘poor man’s Mercedes S-Class’.
This also applies to the Town Car’s sister cars, the Ford Crown Victoria & the Mercury Grand Marquis.
Not only that, but because of the body-on-frame design, relatively simple mechanics and the fact that the Town Car’s V8 engine is massively under-stressed, the Town Car, along with its aforementioned Ford and Mercury sister cars, is notoriously reliable - one Town Car featured on Scotty Kilmer’s ‘Show-Off Sunday’ series on TH-cam had done 486,000 miles (486,609 miles, to be exact) at the time of filming.

The fleet I worked for had gm vans, but anything that needed replacing would be replaced short of an engine past like 200k. Trans, rear ends, suspension parts would all be replaced as needed.

@@JohnSmith-wx9wj Because in Japan, American cars represented power and wealth in the culture. There is a car tax that is based on the displacement of an engine of the vehicle in Japan. So, naturally, American cars with big engines were far more expensive to maintain because the tax pay is few times higher than other Japanese counterparts. That tax is why Mazda decided to invest in rotary engines for sportscar, so it can have smaller displacement engine with more power.

Let's be honest, no one is EVER going to sit in the middle seat in the back of that car, so a one-piece rear floor mat does nothing useful. In fact, it makes cleaning the car that much more inconvenient because instead of carefully lifting one mat out of each side without spilling any of the accumulated dirt on the clean carpet below as you do so, you have to wrestle a floppy anaconda across the car and out one side, spilling all of that dirt onto your carpet along the way. I'm a professional detailer. I have a lot of time to dwell on little things like this.

Very nice car for shuttling and running errands. It was this reddish brown color with a tan interior, gorgeous car! Before our shuttle had been a 06 Ford Windstar followed by a 08 Ford Taurus, so the Town Car L was a nice level-up. I once had to go retrieve 4 tires for a Grand Marquis and wouldn't you believe all 4 tires fit in the trunk of this thing?!?! Amazing. I still remember how it felt to drive that beast on a regular.

Fun review! Middle aged Gen X here. Have owned and/or regularly driven all the "panther" platform cars. If you drive a lot, especially highway miles, and comfort during a commute becomes a quality of life issue for you, there is no beating a town car. They were fleet cars for a reason (reliable, low relative maintenance cost and longevity). Oh yeah, they're built very solidly and hold up well in car crashes. If you're going to buy one, look at 2003-2011 model years. You can still get a well preserved examples with lots of life left in them. If you can't find one, look at a highly optioned Mercury Grand Marquis, it's not a town car, but comes close. If you're willing to travel to score one...start your search in Florida. Oh yeah, if you get one, (any panther platform car, in fact) and it's in good enough condition to justify spending a little money on, upgrade the rear differential to a locking differential. (and if you really want to splurge, upgrade to 4:10 gears). Enjoy!

I had an '08 Town Car Signature Limted as my highschool/college car. I commuted one hour each way to college every day for 2 years (associates degree), drove it from coast to coast, Minnesota to Arizona, Denver to Minneapolis in one day, and pretty much everywhere in between. I never had a single issue. Never left me stranded once. Always started, from 110 degree days in Arizona to -34 degree days in Minnesota. Not. One. Problem. Keep in mind, I had this car in High school and took care of it like a highschooler. Usually about 5000 miles between oil changes, cheap gas, replaced the air filter once in six years of ownership, you get the picture. I cannot stress enough how good of a car this is. My current car is a 2003 Town Car Signature, so same body style and interior with slight differences (and a vinyl roof!) Going to take much better care of this one, because if my first one lasted as long as it did with how poorly I took care of it, I can only imagine how long one will last with proper care. If you're considering a Town Car, this is your sign. Get one now before they get expensive, because they are starting to.

Just recently I sold my '01 Town Car Carteir in "agressivly beige,"
Watching this video brings back memories.
