  • In this video I will show you how to repurpose an old monitor into a digital picture frame that will blow any other digital picture frame you can buy out of the water. I know that mine doesn't have a frame but I just don't have time right now to build one and for now I like the way it look as it is right now.

    Cool, thx. Was always worrying about what to do with excessive screens, now I can just go yolo. Old ones can go into my card display shelves, book shelves or even pantry. A good source of light and makes everywhere looks modern and super cool

    Thank you so much. After buying and returning expensive and poorly made large digital photo frames, I was looking for alternative ways to show my family jpgs digitally, and your video was really very clever, well explained and so helpful. I can't thank you enough. John

    Can you tell me which model/generation Fire Stick that you used? There are several models out there; the most current works with Alexa....don't think that is what you used...was thinking I could find the older model on ebay....

    I'm gonna do this over Christmas. Like you, I got a $20 Fire stick back when. Also got a cheap 1st gen Chromecast which I never used, and maybe that's the way to go if it'll revert to a screensaver more easily.
    Hope to hook the setup to HomeKit via a WeMo switch or something so maybe it won't have to run 24/7. My phone, a wall switch, or my voice via Alexa can then all control it, and make it timed if I want. We'll see.
    Would love to add a motion sensor on top of that, but one thing at a time.
    Did you build the frame and tuck the wires? Would love to see a linked pic if you did.
    Does the Fire remote advance the pictures?
    Thanks. Can't believe you've only gotten 500 views.

    Any advice for me? I’m trying to turn a monitor into a digital picture frame. I bought a media player (MICCA Speck G2) but then realized my monitor does but have an HDMI or A/V port. I then went & bought a HDMI - DVI-1 cable so I could connect them. But nothing is happening on my screen! HELP please!!

      Did you try this? I'm thinking of doing the same thing and getting an adapter. Only thing is, the Fire Stick is now has Alexa and is $35. I can't find the $20 model anywhere....might still do it anyway.

    I am thinking of doing this same thing but with a Chromecast. The reason being that a Chromecast will automatically go into screensaver mode, so I can hook up a day/night or motion sensor - that way it will not be on 24/7. I just wish it didn't result in so many cords, but HDMI doesn't allow enough power to run the Chromecast by itself.

    • @ITzRoyall
      @ITzRoyall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you built some sort of housing you can tuck the wires into the housing and just have the extension cord running to the wall outlet. The wires aren't a big deal to me because I have it running behind that cabinet and its hidden. But I guess it would matter depending on where it is. I don't mind it being on 24/7 because of how monitors these days drain such little power. But if it does matter then maybe you can connect it to the light switch on your wall so that you can turn it off at night. But if I did that with mine I would have to let the fire stick boot and set it all up again. So it is easier to just let it stay on all the time.

      Did you get the frame built yet? Going to do the same to replace my broken $1500 Photovu that closed and has no repair support

    • @mmlmrx
      @mmlmrx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I went in a different direction. I found a 13" tablet on Amazon for $130. A few apps later and I'm in business. It was for my parents, but I may still do the monitor/Chromecast thing for my own use...

    • @Yowzoe
      @Yowzoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The software makes this alternative good for parents at a distance shop.nixplay.com/ Just got the Seed 10" for 119., 30% off via CNET Cheapskate. Last year they had 40% off the Edge models after T-Day.
      But as nice as the software is for managing albums and playlists, I want one for our house, and since I have an extra 27" lying around doing nothing, I think maybe I'll set it up and have a big display while saving some bucks.
      Can you say what best apps you found for the tablet? ty

    • @mmlmrx
      @mmlmrx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm still looking for a perfect setup... :-( Ideally, I want to use a *shared* album so that other family members can easily add pictures from their own accounts. However I can't find any apps that can read shared albums, so this is likely an intentional limitation within Google Photos. My current config uses Automagic to launch Google's built-in Daydream mode that is set to look at ALL pictures under the account with the shared album. That only works because my mom doesn't keep any pictures in her account. The main limitation is that the photos don't auto-update - you have to open the Photos app, open the shared album, and click the cloud icon to "copy to device". Supposedly the Dayframe app might work better, but it crashes when I try to open it on this particular tablet, probably because it is running an old version of Android. I'm open to any suggestions!! :-)

      @@ussmillerco I never said it was too expensive..try reading. I said doing this would cost as much as just buying an actual digital frame... then I said Digital frames are overpriced.

    • @ussmillerco
      @ussmillerco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhhhh.... challenging my comprehension....touché. Well....perhaps. But your comment stating that without the items in possession would indeed cost as much as buying an actual dedicated digital photo frame, seems to me a difference without a distinction. But hey maybe I should look for all those 24” digital frames selling for $60 -70.
