    Update: After you see this one, please check out the update for even more (and some truly epic) features! • Taking the Raspberry P...
    A year ago I uploaded a video about a project I called "Dynaframe". A dynamic picture and video digital frame which you could control with a web browser, and which was powered by a Raspberry pi. It was a popular project, but was very klunky.
    And now...the sequel...better in every way! We now have transitions, an easier install, settings for slide times, shuffle, automatic scaling, and more! This video will tell you how to install it, give you a demo of what it does, talk about the new features, and talk a little bit about what's next.
    To image a raspberry pi, there are plenty of good tutorials. I go through it very quickly, if that doesn't work please see the instructions at the Raspberry pi foundation site. The image and instructions can be found at:
    Note: Please use one of the desktop images! I'm not sure if it'll work without the desktop.
    www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/
    To crate the image, you can use the imager on the Raspberry pi site, or "Etcher". You can get that from here:
    www.balena.io/etcher/
    To install it, please paste this into the console on a raspberry pi: (Note: Updated to 2.19 version)
    sudo wget github.com/Geektoolkit/Dynafr... && bash install.sh; rm -f install.sh
    I used artwork from a large variety of sources I've collected over the years, but I want to thank the following who provided alot of it, all from Deviantart:

      Thankyou! I have one 3D print video I'm editing and then I'm getting back to this, but in the background i'm still coding on it pretty hard. I have the ability to add / remove directories coming in the next build with a bit better UI for the web interface (still a long way to go). The adding/removing directories helps greatly to add the ability to do stuff like add a NAS or USB drive. I setup a NAS also so I can test that. I'll definitely talk through RClone as that really makes it magical :)

    Great video Joe! Appreciate the work you put into this! A really cool future feature would be the option to include descriptive captions to credit the artist (or whatever else). Looks like you’re in the right direction with the clock feature! Also do you see yourself allowing image data to be pulled from an API?

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thankyou! I’m working on a “pro” version which will allow the display of EXIF data. The good news is that it gives title, artist, tags and an info section. The bad news is that it doesn’t work for PNG that I’ve seen. But that into would appear in the clock section.
      I really want to make all aspects available via API (and most already are). I’ll look into exposing the current file info

    I love the passion and the dedication you have put behind the project. My question is ...do the photos have to be in the raspberry pi or can they be played form the network or file storage?
    Also if there is a way for you to upload all the cool art work you got and maybe we can buy you a beer or donate to your favorite charity or artist because that will be great LOL

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol! The links to deviant art will get you some great starts on sources of amazing artwork. I can’t upload it because I’d be doing a huge disservice to those artists. I will show how I created the moving ones though and maybe can release those!
      Right now the art has to be on the frame. I’m working on Samba support as a “coming soon” feature though, as well as cloud syncing using Rsync. Should have a flurry of new features in the next few weeks but wanted to get it out and get feedback and see what people were interested in.

    Thank you for your work and passion! I was curious about such a project when I started Googling... now because of this video, I am STOKED to do this! What great work you've done to make this accessible.
    One idea for a feature: dual-display support for Pis with 2 HDMI outputs, one for Portrait and one for Landscape, and your software picks which orientation / monitor is best, zooms to fill the smaller dimension, pads the remaining pixels with black, then sends to the appropriate HDMI port, thereby maximizing every picture. I know some digital frames will make collages of "wrong orientation" pictures, that would be cool for single displays.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thankyou! This has come a LONG way so please keep an eye out. There’s a follow up to this video out already, but another is about to drop any day now for the “pro” setup. It’s got features like web upload from the phone directly to the frames, better multi frame sync, usb drive support (auto detected) and more. It also blurboxes images that are not scaled to fit which I think looks really clean (but scaling options are there also).
      The dual display thing is really tough. I’m looking into it and will see what I can do though. I get a lot of requests for dual display on pi4 but they all are different. Some want to control what’s on each, some want them to mirror, some want them to dynamically choose. I’ll have tor honk on it and see what I can do. For now multiple pis can be synced (see the Epic update linked off this one for that demo).

    • @DHyre
      @DHyre 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you do pad with pixels, perhaps offer a few options: 1) pad with a selected color the user can match to the frame or mat they have around the display; 2) pad with the dominant (or minor) color from the image itself; 3) stretch the pixel at the edge of the image out to the edge of the display

    • @DHyre
      @DHyre 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I can’t get the Web UI to work or show on the first picture. Anyway to make changes to the slideshow setting directly on the Pi it self? Thanks you for making this. My goal is to get this work with what I have and upgrade my Pi and to the pro.

    Just wanted to say thanks again for this most excellent software. Im really enjoying it. I loaded it up with a bunch of horror wallpapers last month and it looked great. Now I'm displaying family photos and video clips. Its awesome how the clips and photos all show together.
    A couple of requests for future updates. 1. Can you please add support for pcd files? I tried a set of autumn scenes in pcd format and nothing showed. I know I can always convert them to jpg, but it would be cool if dynaframe directly supported it. 2. I'm sure there are others like me and load up hundreds of pics on their pi. Some pics I have I haven't seen in a long time or just forgot about them. It would be helpful to have a way to see a photos filename if a pic appears that I forgot I had and wanted to find it easily later on instead of manually reviewing all pics in the folder.
    Im still tweaking the settings to see what works best for pics and clips together. I guess one more request would be to have an option to adjust the time limit of any clips that are in the same folder as photos. For example photos could be set to 30 seconds, while a video could be set to 90 seconds or something like that. Now all I have to do is figure out the best wall to hang the monitor on. Presently it's just been sitting on my fireplace in the living room. Sorry for the long-winded post, I appreciate all your hard work!

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks that's a great post! I do these projects in hopes that a few others will build it, and this project has gone way beyond my expectations! On the github is a 2.08 version, if you run that you'll get some updates, and one of them is the ability to hit the 'f' key to turn on file name views. It's a bit experimental, but it's something I'm working on. For PCD files that's very very tough...I'm using an engine that supports a set of image types, and as long as they're supported i get the fade effects (with the ability to create more effects soon). For PCD I'd have to use another app, and that'd break the fades entirely. I'll look into it a bit more to see if there's some way to shim it into the engine regardless.
      Different lengths for videos and photos is a good suggestion. The newer version (2.08) plays the video files as long as the photo, but I didn't think about having them seperate. I'll see what I can do there.

  • @TheCHRISCaPWN

    That's so much for sharing this. You have made it so simple to install and use, and as you know, that is NOT something easy to find in other similar applications. I haven't looked too deep yet, but is there a way to donate/tip you for this?

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yay glad it helped!!! Yeah I just felt like there was room for improvement on this and I was glad it provide something to the community!
      I don’t have anything for tips, but I appreciate that! I’m actually mulling over starting a patreon for a “pro” version of this that would add features that the community’s requested that will take significant dev time (like Exif support, database support, gesture and time control, premise images etc). I’m thinking of offering it and the tiers would have video tutorials and access to the images, and eventually content packs. Stay tuned for that!

    really great project. would be cool to have an OS image you can download and when you flash the PI it's just all set up with no command line needed. Also, I suppose you could sell some prebuilt or kit versions via a store so folks can get them with software already installed!

      Thankyou! I actually had released version 1 like that. The challenge is that images go stale so quickly, and required me to host mutigigabyte files. It also takes a ton of time to update and compress an image vs just a hit release. Stale images are bad because they won’t include security updates. I’m trying this approach with hopes that it helps make it portable to other SBC such as orange pi and such. That being said, prebuilt setups via a store is on my list so that there’s an easy option!

Also I find if you check out displate, you can find great art that would fit on a wall, and then find out the artist name and find them on deviant art. Finally, sometimes I'll search for 1080x1920 'star wars' art, or similar (for portrait artwork the order of the resolution matters). I can then search for all sorts of sci fi fandoms that I enjoy. Hopefully that gets you started and helps you find out ideas.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Pro uses a new video setup...in some ways its better, in some ways it's a challenge. Scaling for instance is different in pro, but rotation should match. The way pro works is it rotates the entire OS and then plays videos using VLC behind the scenes...you can simulate that to see if pro would fix the issue you're hitting using a normal build of raspbian, and if it works then pro would fix it. Know though that VLC's 'scaling' for fit,fill and such are not as robust as VLC, so that can cause issues for some

    First of all... I love what you are doing here! I'm a photographer and am looking for a solution to display my work as well as a lot of concept art from the games I play or my favorite movies. Any plans to add a "multi-panel" feature? I'm looking at mounting 3 to 5 displays all in portrait orientation (possibly different sized displays with the largest in the middle and smallest on the ends) and would LOVE to be able to display a single landscape-oriented image across all 3 (or 5). If I chop up my single image into pieces with the proper dimensions to fit onto their corresponding screens to recreate the correct overall image, is there a way to make sure those 3 pieces (or 5) will display at the same time... with synced up fading as well when I move to another "multi-panel" image or back to independent portrait-oriented images?

      @@brandongriffin1714 Just letting you know I'm doing some finishing touches and considering this feature still. I love those multi piece wall pieces. One thing that I'm wondering your thoughts on...to do this may require a carefully curated folder where each 'piece' is named the same across the folders. So you'd have 1.jpg in say three folders maybe titled 'left, center, right' and then you'd tell one dynaframe to synce the other two to it (assuming 3 across for now). Then when the first one shows 1.jpg, it'd tell the other two to show 1.jpg...thus syncing them. I tried to come up with other ways, but haven't been successful. There is a slight possability of doing something where you just put a huge image in one and it' splits it, but that's a bit longer way off for now.

      I haven't tried 4k myself, but those that have have all reported that the pi didn't have enough power to pull it off. I think we'll need something with more power to truly get this to work with 4k, or I'll have to try to figure out a way to optimize the code more. Showing a 4k image is one thing, and 4k video is another, but to actually manipulate/fade multiple 4k images in layers smoothly takes yet another level of processing which the pi 4 doesn't appear to have.

      I've used a pi3A+ but you have to make sure the images are scaled down. If you send a 4k image to it it'll try to scale it down, but the pixel data alone will likely take down the pi. If you can spring for the 3B+ you'll be much more 'future proof' as I may add features in the future that may increase the memory usage. I'm working hard to bring it down but I don't control the usage at this point, most of it is from the framework I'm building on (avalonia). The expect it to go down in the next release.

    Lastly, I was wondering if it was possible to add video capability to the file uploads on the website. Right now I can do any picture in my camera roll, but no videos

      Dynaframe currently uses OMXPlayer for video playback. if you setup bullseye, they removed omxplayer, so they basically broke it (and alot of other programs). The only fix right now is to install buster or a previous raspberry pi build that omxplayer works on).
      For the playlists it's as simple as creating folders in the videos folder, and then putting files in there. If the file is playable it should play one after another with the settings you specify.
      One quick check is to just try to run omxplayer and play the video. The other possability is that OMXPlayer can't play the file format.
      For uploads, video uploads aren't possible in the current build.
      Finally, and probably the most exciting..I'm hard at work (and have been for months) making a 'pro' version of this that will switch the video playback to VLC, allow for multiple video and file uploads, include instructions and more. I'm targeting a January release...I was actually working on the release video when I got hit by the 'bullseye' change that broke things, so Working on that now. One thing I try to do is scale photos down to 1080p, then put them on a 4k monitor with the pi in 480p mode. sometimes the upscaler in the tv can make it look 'good enough'. @@geektoolkit thanks for the reply back. I know you mentioned the fades are better on Pi4....im on Pi3 and the fades are clicky. Is that cuz teh Pi3 isn't powerful enough to handle the fades? Like in the big screen you have up front, the fades are fast and smooth. Is that only achievable with the Pi4?

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vice86 Yeah, fast fades require a pi4. The center screen is actually using a PC. The left and right..one is a pi3A and one is a pi4 (Pi3A and pi3 are similar in perofrmance...the A is just smaller/cleaner for uses like this). Sadly if you're looking for a smooth fade on a pi3 I recommend upping it to 10 seconds or so. Honestly though, I'd try the 30 second fade (with like a 60 second or longer between) and see what you think. You may find that you like it...all of mine are set to that now that I've had it running because it looks so dang neat. Depends on your use case.

      Actually I don't mean to gear this towards home assistant at all! I just want to make sure it can be controlled via Home Automation because it's handy. I agree with the Senior Citizen aspect, and I have some work I'm doing to make it easy to get 'rclone' setup. Then you could have the panel at a parent/family members house, and manage it remotely using just about any cloud sharing system (Google drive, dropbox, onedrive etc). My list of features is some bugfixes I have to do (I already have some minor issues to work on) and then to do another release with gestures / Rclone (If I can pull off Rclone in a safe way). The other option will be to teach people how to use Rclone and then they can setup frames and mail them off. It'll happen...just need a bit more time :)

    Woow this is pretty great for a future project of mine! My dream is to live in a bus for a few years with my girlfriend. I would love to put some 'smart picture frames' on the walls. I was planning to do it from scratch. But this will help a lot. What I would like is having multiple pictures 'frames' of us in themes that can change every season. Like still images on the wall that I can manage from a browser. I would put a sensor and connect them to my RP Gpio pins, so if you stand still and looking to the still images it would move like in Harry potter. I would love to have some power saving modes. That if I am not home it would go in a hybrid power off state. And that It would wake up by a home assistant or moving detecting sensors. I will remember this channel if I would build my bus in a few years, when I have enough money and if its legal to park my bus in the backyard of my grandparents. Lets hope 😃

      Possibly. Right now my investigation is in being able to control the backlight of the monitor. I've seen that used on the Samsung Frame that I have, and it, combined with an ambient light sensor, can be fairly convincing in that it can give the color clarity of the monitor without appearing overly 'lit' . That way if you dim the lights it adjusts on the fly. Thats a tough problem to solve though. I hadn't thought about a film, I'll have to look into that...it seems like a cool solution in that it'd likely be removable if it doesn't work, inexpensive if it does, and low tech/easy to add (vs. requiring soldering and tearing the screen apart). Thanks for that suggestion I'll look into it!
