- The controversial Suicide Squad game drops this week (already out for those who got early access through the Deluxe Edition) and its come with some heated debates around some of the story choices they made. One of those arguments has gotten on my nerves and needs to be addressed.

One other thing I noticed. For those that still argue, "Its called 'Kill the Justice League' ", you know what the game is also called? "SUICIDE Squad" Guess which member of the Squad actually bites it... 😏
Even the god awful 2016 Suicide Squad movie was at least smart enough to kill off one or two of it's members. This game doesn't even do that!
actually it's five games if u want to be technical - arkham origins blackgate; it's a sequel to origins that takes place 3 months later
but neither origins games are from rocksteady so yes its 3 games

The problem is that this game has no purpose beyond killing the justice league. If it was a global invasion like injustice 2 thats different. But simply killing great characters because Amanda Waller said so is quite shallow. Overall this game serves no reward to be the villain. Nothing but "I told you so" moment
I was born in 1989 so BAS and Kevin Conroy has been part of my childhood for 34 years now. I haven't played the game. Wasn't planning on buying it because it wasn't a main line Batman game, and despite them saying that it's tied to the Arkham universe, they must not have realized that it was going to blow up in their face and it looks like they're trying to do damage control. If anything, This is just an alternate universe in my head doesn't count lol. Kevin Conroy lent his voice to Batman so many times for so many versions

batman animated series (1992) that was literally riding off of burton batman movies hype and kevin conroy, the voice actor was never a big name until decades later even then it was through games and animations. u trying to make it seems like he was big then what he actually was
The context in the game is even worse.
Fight with Bruce 1: Batman utterly decimates the squad effortlessly then almost kills Harley. The Flash manages to save her. Batman beats a weakened flash to a pulp then forgets to try and kill Harley again.
Fight number 2: Batman uses fear toxin to cripple the squad. The squad then fights ghostly apparitions of the Batman and then fight a demon version of him?
All of this in the Batcave, with home court advantage, why tf did he not just dispose with the squad the same way he did before, if not more quickly?

@Frieza-yg4zp the boss fights were horrendous. There is no logic when it comes to the suicide squad’s ability to beat a justice league that is willing to kill AND Brainiac. At that point it’s just Suicide Squad fan fiction.

Because of the super pill that makes sense in the comics it still kind of makes sense because certain people are being paired up against certain people but this story you just have three street levels and one power house and that’s it and in the trailers and practically showed us how outmatch they were. For one where are the other characters you know some that might actually be good counters to some of these guys but of course there’s no nuance no complexity

That said, there were leaks. Small clues also suggest other things regarding Batman and everyone else. Especially the Flash since there was emphasis on his finger.

The concept of Suicide Squad killing the Justice League is not that great in the first place. I mean, the fact that they manage to kill a group of overpowered superheroes is just unbelievable to me.
tbh i would buy into it if it was more than 4 dudes while 3 of them were just regular humans. I would buy into it if they bring most of the arkham villains plus powered guys from the other dc villains like sinestro, doomsday, killer croc and have them all work together.

How many Justice League members died in the Injustice Series? Those games were incredible and the deaths made sense to the fans and the players. You can kill a hero, but you can't expect the best hero of the justice league to sit on a park bench and take a bullet in their prime.

If they just did this game as a one-off like Gotham Knights, this probably wouldn't be as bad. But they decided to set it in the already established Arkhamverse. We already know the Batman issue, but think about this: this is the first time we see the Justice League, other superheroes outside of Gotham, in this universe...and they all get killed.
That's Arkham? And you care? The Batman games had 3 dope installments. Play those.

What annoys me the most about the "It's called..." argument, it's Suicide Squad meaning it should be about the villains going on missions that if it went wrong cannot be tied back to the Government. We could've had a Warhammer Darktide esque game where we play as various villains attempting to earn their freedom and redemption.
More importantly, the deaths were disrespectful as hell! No one minds Kratos killing so many gods because he doesn't execute beloved voice actors in their final roles, or piss on corpses, and all the kills make sense!
Those bombs in their heads can't be tied back to the government? I'm sure Batman would be able to arrest Amanda Waller. Or Lois Lane could write a story for the Daily Planet exposing the truth.
In a way, it also hurts even more with the fact that Kevin Conroy passed away and one would expect his fate to be altered or at least have it be up in the air. Surviving the JL purge would also help even if it'd somewhat contrast the title of the game

Whats funny is that it was WB’s decision. Im pretty sure the devs didnt wanna tie it in but WB just forced them to. Theres evidence of it to since most of the og staff for the arkham games left rocksteady so most likely the devs that are working on ssktjl are probably recent hires who are indifferent to the legacy left behind by the og’s.

I don’t know what would be worse, if people think that’s a well constructed argument, or they’re saying it to farm engagement.
1) People have been pissed at the premise since day one.
2) If people did keep an open mind for this game, and it’s concept and then complain about how it’s executed then that’s absolutely reasonable. The argument boils down to “you saw title of thing and are annoyed that the thing is what it’s titled”, which is not the argument being made. Instead the argument being made by those who don’t like the game is “I saw the title of thing and didn’t like how it was executed after buying and playing it”.
The only people parroting this argument are either laughing at a situation they have no context for and have seen this argument in passing, or you’re just not engaging with what people are saying.

I didn't buy the game because 1) I hate looter shooters and 2) I don't like the idea of the SS killing the JL. I don't need to spend money to play the game and then realise I paid for a shit premise. I didn't buy the last of us 2 exactly because I heard that instead of working on another story based in the same world, they decided to do Joel and Ellie again. I can hate the premise without needing to spend money on it.
One of the worst parts is that people have been saying ‘oh, but they’re coming back in a later update!’ As if that excuses anything. The league still died in disrespectful ways, and it’s a cheap way to bring them back. And in that case, why would the squad continue to go after brainiac if the league is back? Even if Rocksteady decides to say ‘oh, this is actually an elseworlds story to the Arkham verse’, that still doesn’t change the fact that it was all originally supposed to be apart of the same universe and once again, it excuses nothing
The main problem is that it’s in the Arkham verse, which has its own established history and mythology that it made. If the game took place in a similar but obviously different earth than it would be a little better to handle. The premise isn’t a bad one but it’s put in the last universe that should have it. They could have made the Arkham verse the DCAU of video games, but unfortunately that impossible for now unless they make dlc that has a story about reviving the league and the other implied deaths.
Even if they tried to backpedal and revive the JL, it would be so lame, because the damage was done. The whole 'altering the events of the past' thing is a real cop out of taking responsibility for making the mistakes that they did. They should have never put it in the Arkhamverse in the first place. That alone was playing with fire as a thought.
Still, why even bring them back if four goons with guns are so much ducking more powerful

And if that game completely ignores Kill the Justice League, than Arkham fans could skip Kill the Justice League because that game retroactively becomes a standalone game. Sure, Kill the Justice League is only worse because the convoluted bs about the two Deadshots not so necessary anymore, but at least the Arkham series would be freed from that.

Honestly I was thinking they were going to go the route of the somehow break them out of their mind control and they ignore Amanda Waller's orders to kill them and they have to hide that from her. And in the end the Justice League come together to fight Brainiac. Even though that idea sounds predictable, it would have had way more nuance and depth that what they went with. Committing to killing the JL isn't the problem they just did it in a tasteless and disrespectful way man idk
I too was expecting the title to be a clickbait type of deal where people think "Oh shit, we really are going to kill the Justice League?" only to find out that they were fooled into actually thinking that. But I feel like it would have been less tasteless if the post-credit scene showed the bat family alive(Since we never see Robin's dead body, only his mask) and see Azreal becoming the new Batman since it was foreshadowed during Arkham Knight along with Conner Kent, Donna Troy, Kid Flash, Kyle Rayner, and Wally West taking place of OG Justice League to at least let the audience know that "Don't worry, the Arkhamverse isn't without its heroes" or some stuff like that.

Honestly, this game had potential the gameplay was fun, the graphics are amazing, and the story was good but the thing is the Suicide Squad should not have been able to kill the Justice League I think it should have been clones because it would make more sense that they got taken down so easy and would have made sense for Brainiac to collect them and clone them since it’s apart of his character then would could’ve had more games from this universe I also think that if Wonder Woman only died it would have made an impact but instead they killed them all and the fact that they killed Batman is insane bro was the G.O.A.T he was unstoppable and to just kill him with a gun is insane to do especially after Kevin Conroy passed this feels disrespectful to him and the character. It wouldn’t have been bad if he sacrificed himself or something it would be fine because it would have been meaningful and also the fact that they couldn’t be helped is dumb because Brainiac is a genius and would have a cure for them just in case he needed it and also the SS could have tried to cure them or revive them with the Lazarus Pit. I’m just ranting at this point but that’s everything this game is very upsetting
They can still make a Justice League game if they want to. It's not like another game would have to align with the plot of this game. They could also just treat the games like an elseworld story or set a JL game between Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad.

It’s a weak defence because if you name your game something offensive and then do something offensive in it it doesn’t justify showing that action in a video game.
It is very clear that the people who say “well yeah it’s called kill the Justice League” have either never played the game or just feel like it’s their moral obligation to defend the game with they’re dying breath.
They don't read comics either. 🤷🏾♂️ i.e. Kill the X-Men runs where although the title says this, it doesn't actually happen.

@@SeanWheeler100 There are stories in which there is someone within the X-Men or associated with them is the main character to cause some chaos in a comic run, Magneto and Wolverine to name a few. Sometimes it stems even to other groups in Marvel comics. In them not every character ends up dying and in some cases some characters causes a shift in someone's actions. Like Captain America in the avengers who nearly killed mutant kids, had to take out Iron Man to save the kids, so to speak.
What you mentioned is another example. But yeah I went with kill the X-Men because there are several comic runs have a similar notion.

@@SeanWheeler100 The difference is that there is an established universe based off of one character. The Death of Superman, Supes wasn't the one to established the universe that he is in, granted around that time there were others, and in those small years you had those characters already existing. Meanwhile, the Arkhamverse only had Batman since 09 to now, that universe began as its own one and only thing, not only for the character but at the time Rocksteady was the one to even save WB and paved a way for that universe to begin with, not to mention the Arkhamverse is it's own continuity of a Batman that is very unique compared to the main continuity Batman.
There were also no retcons and shifts with 0 clarification as is moat of the plot being covered up until SSKTJL was brought up.
It should have been an Elseworld. But the fans of the game are in the right to be mad, if you understood the history behind how that Arkhamverse came to be in a really tough time and how it blew up from there, banger after banger. Essentially at the start, WB was in a tough spot and Rocksteady led the charge and had the backing of fans later on, who, often times, spoke with Rocksteady devs online and did challenges with them back in the day.
This kinda of game devalues your companies IP , there is clear malice with this game to tear down their iconic hero’s the company hired to right it hasn’t been really hiding it, there is a clear agenda . Absolutely spitting in the face of your fans is not a great business model, then they’ll gaslight the fans for not consuming their product or call us a buzzword, because all we did was care. Denny O’Neil would never of let this happen to Batman or any of these other hero’s. I also cannot stand Harley Quinn she’s always been an awful character outside of the animated series & mad love & the powers at be want nothing more than for her to be the face at DC. They cannot stand that Batman is popular. I’m so sick of this kind of content it’s old & tired , I just want my hero’s to be heroic.
You said it perfectly, the game was made with clear malice. It is cruel and demoralizing just having famous, beloved, and iconic superheroes killed off in ridiculous and disrespectful ways. I am fully against everything that this game stands for and will criticize it to my heart's content.

From what I've seen of it there is a lot about this game that isn't appealing to me. Thinking there was some malice behind the game's creation [from who? The developers? The writers? The art designers? The voice actors? The execs? or from all of them?] though is some conspiracy theory level bullshit. And entertaining that nonsense is just going to make you more upset.
Even from comic fans that's my problem with the argument they think were mad just because our favorite characters died when that's not the point. We've read and watch multiple version of our favorite DC characters die and rarely stay dead.

The game's title isn't even an argument, but it IS a massive red flag! It's essentially the writers saying "We hate the heroes you grew up with and we'll have bad guys kill them with no remorse"! Who would want to play a game like that?

Did anyone understand that before the movie came out? Rey turning out to be a Palpatine and then taking the Skywalker name was convoluted as hell. At least "Kill the Justice League" explains the premise well. Problem was playing as four mercenaries to kill popular heroes would be very controversial. Even worse when WB decided to set it in the Arkham universe so that the fans of that series were forced to kill their beloved Batman.

Kraven was the reason Spiderman got the symbiote, he was the true antagonist the plot was moving, because of Kraven's ambition to find his last hunt, I didn't really care too much about Venom. And they've got a news reporter K.K. Kennedy on their side to defame the heroes to have people support the Overkillers. And the reason why my story is better than Kill the Justice League and The Boys is because we're not siding with the hero-killers in this narrative. The Overkillers are the antagonists of the book, and their leader, Killian Murdercorpse is doing this out of revenge for the death of his wife and daughter in the battle between the GeneHuman supremacist geokinetic villain, Lady Terra and the force-field defending hero Forceman. Murdercorpse killed Lady Terra with a platinum bullet and formed the Overkillers to murder every GeneHuman in Wilmette, starting with Lady Terra's Sisterhood of GeneHumans and had successfully wiped out every supervillain in Wilmette, which leaves the superheroes and certain citizens as the only GeneHumans left in Wilmette. Oh, and Murdercorpse is so crazy for revenge, that he builds the Planet Overkiller, a space station with a hyperlaser capable of destroying the Earth just to get rid of a minority he hates. So the Shadow family has to beat the Overkillers to save the Earth. And without killing anyone, because our heroes really don't want any more deaths to prove the Overkillers right or anything for Kennedy to truthfully use in her smear campaign. In fact, they would even evacuate the bad guys in the Planet Overkiller, not just to follow the no-kill rule but also to make up for all the supervillains that they've allowed the Overkillers to kill.

I totally agree with you on how the developers executed the death of the justice league, they did my boi Superman dirty. The Joel argument is different. It's a different genre and tone. The last of us has always been raw, brutal, and cruel. The redeeming qualities of those tones was the humanity that all characters displayed.
Joel didn't deserve it. But he got it anyways. I for one am not angry about how he died. I actually liked his death in a storytelling sort of way. His knee gets blown to pieces and then he's beaten to death in front of Ellie with a golf club? That is exactly the kind of world they live in, and thus I think it fits perfectly for Joel.
Keeping with that same argument. Batman is in a different world with a different tone. The Arkham world is bleak, noir, but in the bleakness, there is a savior. A hero. Hope clad in black. Batman. Even when Batman fails, he gets back up. Even when he let's his friends down, he still keeps trying to get it right. Because Batman never quits. And he'll always do the right thing.
Suicide Squad tore this apart. But that can be forgiven to some degree due to the nature of the game. What cannot be forgiven is how Batman was killed.
There is a difference between these arguments that people need to realize. Nobody thinks people who hate Joel's death are mad just because he died, but at the same time, those same people value the storytelling of how he died much better than Arkham Batman.
@aceinspace2751 I didnt wanted to extend myself too much but I know that Joel's death was too juicy for the story for it to not happen and I didnt mind it being brutal(Henry's and his brother death was one of the hardest moment in the first game for me, it was great)
My issue is more about all they did to make it to that point and everything that happens later.(Joel becoming dumber for it to happen-the rest of the narrative being all over the place to care)

You are right. the issue people have isn’t that you kill the league, it’s HOW you kill them. The boss fights need to be awesome and respect the characters when they die. Heck, I think injustice did this “fight your heroes” concept much better. Even the “evil” heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman were still heroes in a sense, the issue was their methods of being heroes. They basically became homelander… a massively misguided hero, but still a hero (of sorts). They sought to protect he world, but did it through an authoritarian Regime. Meanwhile, other heroes and some villians like Batman and Harley resisted them. We get the joy of fighting our favorite heroes, but it’s wrapped up in the tragedy of friends and allies forced into fighting each other under ideological differences.
The whole tribute to Batman at the end just makes me feel hollow inside because we the who killed him. Plus I can’t help but feel that they nerf the justice league too much especially Superman and Batman I be honest I kinda expected that they save the justice league because the suicide against the justice league with no kill rule would be nightmare.

I think they didnt even need to make a new IP. A suicide squad game that didnt kill the justice league and instead went on different adventure/mission. Perfect example is something like james guns suicide squad story. Apparently There was another suicide squad game being made but it got cancelled. The story points and the boss fight seem really bad imo

Batman's death hurt even more because it was one of the last things Kevin Conroy worked on.
Also, it wouldn't have taken much to make the deaths of the Justice League feel meaningful, just have them snap out of Brainiac's control, unsing all of their willpower to make themselves vulnerable and have them tell the Suicude Squad that they have to kill them, have them beg for death because they know they are too much of a danger under Brainiac's control. Have them go out like heroes.

The game is mistitled. It should be called "Defile the Justice League" because of the context of the killings. They literally pissed on Flash's corpse... Any villain who does something so raunchy immediately loses any cool factor they had, because now they just look like a bratty juvenile on drugs, and barely competent to have the skills to kill a Justice League member. "The title is in the name" is a brain dead argument by people who are incapable of correlating the context to the words.
He didn't actually manage to do that to Flash because Deadshot stopped him, if it's any comfort.

And if he was stopped from doing what he was about to do, then why even nourish the thought. It holds no where near the same weight as say, Batman stopping Red Hood from wanting to off a criminal who was responsible for killing innocent people. That's a real character arch. Intervening on a character who is about to piss on a Justice League member does nothing to give the villain an interesting arch because his initial intention of doing so was not relatable in the slightest.

I do feel like even this was trying to have a grander purpose, to show people, "Look, Deadshot prevented the Flash from getting pissed on in a display of honor, therefore none of the other deaths can be criticised as dishonorable because no honorable character felt the need to step in." It feels like padding to make the the bad stuff look good in the light of the worst stuff. To say it in a way that makes more sense, the studio basically said, "we draw the line at pissing on a beloved dead hero, so everything else we do in this game is not really that bad because it's within the line." But they can't just put the line wherever they feel like and then expect people to see anything within that line as okay.
@@ryanwilliams6602 I'd agree if not for the fact that other squaddies don't cross that line. They do their job and kill the league whilst helping metropolis. It is only Boomerang, the most truly deranged of the Squad, who commits arguably evil acts in the game. Such as putting a bomb in a child's head, mutilating the Flash, who literally saved them, tried to kill the entire squad at the start of the game, before eventually bonding with them throughout the story.
He's still evil though and sometimes it's his best quality IMO.

I would've been fine with the game disrespecting the Justice League if it wasn't "canon" to the Arkham Series. The argument of "just don't play the game" is all well and good until the game in question tracks mud all over the heart and soul of an adjacent storyline.
They could've given every member of a League a death worthy of a hero. Instead, Batman dies on a park bench after a homicidal maniac gives him a morality lesson, and the Flash gets pissed on. When it comes down to it, some of the people that wrote that atrocious story in the game, are the same ones that have that twisted political view.
Not just one view either, but many twisted views, views such as reoccurring career criminals in the real world should have people out there protesting their innocence and want them to have infinite chances, similar to the Joker, where they don’t care if those criminals go out there and harass, carjack, rob, rape, physically assault and even kill innocent people out there.
They also believe that there should be no age of consent for sex, and actual pedophiles should be able to fantasize and act out their fantasies on whoever they love and want because Love is Love and you shouldn’t judge.
Everything to those people is twisted, the things normal rational thinking people consider wrong or immoral, are actually right and morally just to them.

What makes this so awful is the fact that one the gameplay is boring generic looter shooter live service garbage centred around characters i really don't understand why companies keep trying to push in the suicide squad. Two it kills off all potential for future games in the Arkham universe with the justice league unless they pull some awful writing bs to bring them back which will make everyone not care because the damage is already done. And three the most important these deaths are not even treated as important, Batman after 4 games as a lead protagonist dies as a side character and is immediately forgotten about as soon as superman shows up 2 seconds later in a game about a mental patient and a guy with a boomerang. i genuinely want to know pushing the fact people love batman to the side, how people defend a great main character that was the focus of 4 incredible, critically acclaimed games being killed off as a relatively unimportant side villain in an generic live service slop game centred around c tier average characters in a boring looter shooter filled with painfully boring escort missions and terrible boss fights, all in service of a game that couldn't lace the boots of the previously mentioned 4. There are some things in life where you sit back and just have to think these people are either huffing copium or are just being contrarians for engagement. This game has singlehandedly ruined the potential for one of the strongest iterations of a dc universe ever conceived.

The "imposter" Deadshot is 100% only because they forgot he was already there (or just didn't know since this isn't the same team, this game caused the original team to leave). Now we have to believe Batman wasn't a good enough detective to know a WHITE guy was an imposter of a BLACK guy. Genius.

My problem is that Batman and all of them didn't have any profound last words. No thematic deaths. Nothing with even a hint of dramatic irony. They just kinda die, and some even get peed on.

It's the same thing that happened in Last of Us 2. I was upset at the gaslighting and disrespect of Joel's character, not necessarily the fact that he died. Or how Han Solo and Luke Skywalker were treated. One is a dead beat dad, and the other left his sister in her time of need to mope for 30 years! Then they were killed off in the stupidest ways possible.

It's evident these people who use this argument aren't as passionate about these characters and Batman in particular. When I found out that you have to kill the Timm-verse roster of the League I was fine will killing my heroes until I found out how Flash and Batman died.
As a writer my problem is that with the roster of Suicide Squad they're working with you'd think the deaths would be more creative than what we got. But if this was done by a bunch of egotistical hacks using leftist talking points then I'm not surprised really.

I truly believe the reason so many feel so strongly is because we see this for what it truly is, being not the death of characters, but the destruction of symbols.
I am of the opinion ,that despite explaining the "corruption" angle, in the writers mean spirited minds, Brainiac simply exposed these heroes, these cultural icons, these role models for what they " truly are" , that being deeply flawed false idols who were never deserving of our respect and admiration.
This game is proof that if a piece of media shows something that's badly written and/or insulting towards fans as objectively what happened, you have every right to ignore that media entirely.
I think the biggest issue the fact that they didn't do anything to get us invested in this version of the Justice League beforehand. No games of their own to introduce them. So we feel nothing when they die. Wonder Woman was the only one that went out with any dignity. Flash went out of his way to save Harley from Batman when he could've ran, and he gets Boomerang pissing on his corpse as thanks. Superman just falls over and dies, and Batman has spends his last moments being snubbed by Harley. At least John Stewart gets a few lines before going out.
This argument stemmed from the fact that we knew what this game was about for months, they even showed Kevin Conroy’s Batman at the game awards to play tribute to him after showing Flash’s basically dead body in a cutscene.

You're right about how it's how they were killed off there are many stories in comics where all the heroes die in one of the big well-known Poplar ones is Injustice look how many Heroes died in that series and how they were treated one of my favorite examples is Damien ending Nightwing and how that affects the story.
