  • Bandai's experimental Tyrannosaurus model kit uses the new material Limex together with traditional polystyrene for a one-of-a-kind product that many model fans have been wanting to try out.
    While TBM, the company that owns Limex, touts a lot of eco-friendly benefits of Limex, does it bring anything new and amazing to the table for us model fans?

    I love the amount of research you put into all of your videos. No one else would have gone into such a deep dive about Limex as you have done.
    A full, detailed, enjoyable amd educational review.

      Thank you so much! I was very curious myself when Bandai presented this kit as if Limex was already a thing everyone knew about - and then I looked into it and it looked quite different from what I thought:)

    That take on Limex's short lifespan didn't age well - The new Gunpla-kun kit uses it! Would love to see a review covering if any other consumer products have been made since and maybe how the material works with gundam markers

    I just built these two kits last night and they were a lot of quick fun, the neck joint was a problem before glue but the tail joint was fine and I really like the look and feel of the material. I wish they would do a whole line of these, there are other dinos I'd love to have models of on my desk. The triceratops is much much sturdier and had no loose joints at all.

    I do kind of hope they reuse the molds in more traditional plastics, would make for a great, starter kit for new builders who are more interested in dinosaurs than mecha. I've only got the trike so far since it was in stock and I'm looking for the rex at a decent price. There also, aren't a lot of easy display kits for dinosaurs that are cheap, and the plastic ones would be there

    Congrats on hitting 3K! As someone that dabbles in the plastic industry (mostly made with LD/HDPEs tho) Limex is an interesting idea, curious in it's wider application tho, as something niche like plamo is not going to guarantee its long time absorption (hence your conclusion about Bandai printing PE on the runners lol)
    Again, congrats on review so well done and well researched! Cheers!

      By my estimate, the challenge Bandai faced with Limex was the mixture not playing nicely with injection molding, and the mixture not being uniform which leads to parts that break immediately when stressed. They solved the first thing with brute-force adding more pressure, but the later it seems they didn't quite figure out, with some people saying their actual pieces break apart, which is totally possible...
      Kinda wished Limex had some unintentional characteristic that modelers would love - I'd love to have more different materials for different roles in builds

  • @razrafz
    @razrafz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    as someone who had played around with plastic composite material (friend's failed specimens for his thesis), they are indeed a lot more brittle than pure plastic. i suspect that the part that breaks easily on the rod probably had a bit too much filler on that specific point

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am thinking exactly the same thing. There's no way for Bandai to reliably control if the Limex will bunch up in a spot and not leave enough polystyrene for strength.
      I did harass a LOT of the runner though, so at least I can say the brittle bits was limited to that one on camera and one other time. Still, that small possibility already opens up the chance that someone's kit will just break. Even one spot is enough to ruin someone's day

    I have never heard of this Limex before ,
    surely it's a fancy info to learn & how it would be an alternative source specially for a model kit materials.
    cheers mate !

      I think if environmental pressures really got bad enough that we must reduce plastic usage, then materials like Limex is really helpful. At the current state, especially when we demand the best of the best in our products, consumers probably won't tolerate this because there are only negative trade-offs without big benefits for modelers and fans. Kinda sad, but it isn't time yet for Limex I think

  • @wesmail08

    Now I known what is limex is, thanks my man

  • @nandyk.2026
    @nandyk.2026 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    the environmental benefits are probably miniscule at the end of the day, but a part of me wishes that 'eco-friendly' materials like limex can be more than just a novelty one day.
    i've heard that lego earlier this year unveiled a prototype for bricks made out of recycled materials, and I have hopes that other toy companies can follow suit whenever that comes into fruition.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If used on a large scale, the filler can probably cut down on a lot of plastic usage, though I suspect it costs more to add Limex, or else we'd have seen more wide-spread adoption.
      I didn't know about the Lego thing though. That's very intriguing because they're very demanding towards the strength and durability of their plastics, so whatever they opt for must be the fruit of some serious research. Gotta go look that one up...

    This kit can really be described as Funky, The molding is quite nice though the Limex stuff is quite odd and I do hope Bandai re uses this mold in the future and release it as a normal kit with just Standard Polystyrene cause I really do want to get my hands on this kit in one form or another

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd love for them to make more of these though without the wonky Limex. A pterodactyl and a plesiosaur would be awesome
      I also wonder if Bandai will sell this at all outside the Asian region, because it seems like they don't want to do that

  • @ParmMannREBORN

    In Canada(at least Vancouver) the kit is almost double what the yen price is at hobby shops, cost of importing I guess. Neat little curiosity but I'll probably pass. Great and informative review!

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! (belated reply I know) At twice the price the kit really isn't worth it. The prices here in Hong Kong are being slashed like crazy and there's still stacks of them, so people aren't biting...

    I'm more surprised bandai was able to get access to the material from the supply chain so early in the materials life. Actual consumer products using limex is realistically still a few years off.

    it would have been interesting to see if the material reduces stress marks on dark plastic - had they attempted that route.
    but an interesting experimental line nonetheless, curious to see if someone in bandai ever thought of an RG version with each bone separated
    then finally find justification for RG hands

    • @Astronopolis
      @Astronopolis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd imagine you can't do anything but white with the material, it seems all that it is is limestone powder suspended in polystyrene, normal plastic dyes would be affected preventing black blacks and brighter colors, as well as inconsistent coloring

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you're right. They picked something white for these models because the Limex won't take well to the dyes usually added to polystyrene, and you'll get speckles here and there

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think short of using something entirely that isn't plastic, there's not much hopes of avoiding stress marks. The Limex here seems to be only a filler and leaves the polystyrene untouched, so we get all the pros and cons we always had

  • @megaman455

    The T-Rex was a huge bitch to assemble. Broke in multiple places under normal force.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been hearing that more and more. I think Bandai has no way of controlling how the Limex is distributed so they become weak spots when they build up in a spot. Huge bummer

  • @TheDallascowboy365
    @TheDallascowboy365 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    that was really small... and yet it doesn't seem small enough for 1/100. amazingly unremarkeable, it looks like 1/10th or 1/20th its price at a quick glance - which was probably why they needed that ecopla angle

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so too that Bandai leaned mostly on the exotic material. Since the video, the poor kits have been piling up in stores where I am and no one wants them despite price cuts

    Curious about what Limex is and how it feels in the hands.

    • @kevinkerlin5603
      @kevinkerlin5603 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To brittle, snaps easily meaning breaks apart I tried building this kit so I don’t like this material.I didn’t try to even glue just threw it away

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It feels a bit grainy when you run your finger across it but not in an unpleasant way. As Kevin mentioned in the reply, the kits do have potential problems where an uneven concentration of Limex in spots will cause strength problems.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've been talking to a few people who own this kit too, and it seems that those brittle parts are if there's Limex bunched up in spots so there isn't enough polystyrene to hold them together.
      Kind of a bummer when that happens, and it really reinforces the idea that this experiment won't be viable for more kits.
      Sad to hear yours broke so badly

  • @wulf8889

    Didn't Bandai had just an Ecopla event and had this teaching kids recycling at Gunpla school over at Yokohama?

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was that a thing? It does sound totally sensible though. Ironically, the Limex mixture in these kits probably can't be recycled...

    • @wulf8889
      @wulf8889 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HobbyClubhouse There's a big push over Yokohama about environmental projects. Focused on there renewable and zero carbon projects. There was an Ecopla event just after the last Hobby Next Phase and the Ecopla line expanded. They are also planning special gunpla runners trashcans all over Japan.
      Also the Dinosaur kits were originally PS that's why the runners indicates as such.

    Limex is a very fragile material that breaks easily compared to conventional plastic.
