You could make an argument for Magrudergrind as well. Though I find that more hardcore rooted bands often get left out on these shows. Surely one Extreme Noise Terror album?
Yay, Dahmer plug right at the end! 9 Trax 7" '96 was my first Grind EP purchased and still my favorite grind 7" I own. Would have been great to hear more of his thoughts on Dahmerized.
I am surprised that there was no mention of "Sore Throat". They were definitely one of the pioneering grind bands in the mid to late 80s. Death to Capitalist Hardcore EP (1987). I'm not a big fan of grind/noise/core, but that album has all the ingredients. They took the minimalist to the extreme, with ultra-short songs, very raw, guttural and screaming vocals, short short short, fast blasting songs. I mean that EP had 40+ songs ... most of which are under 30 seconds. I don't know how much influence they had on other bands ... they seemed to be pretty anti-everyone, but they were there when grindcore was starting to form life.
see also Fear of God and Larm, bands I never hear mentioned by "kids" (people under 35) and metal dudes. It's kinda fine though, who cares about popularity?
@@thereagauze: Kids are ignorant and never heard about bands like Fear Of God, Filthy Christians, Xysma, Sore Throat, Righteous Pigs or Old Lady Drivers. Metal dudes care more for bands like Repulsion and Terrorizer for obvious reasons. Larm were kinda proto-grindcore, extreme hardcore. Another band of this type was Psycho Sin from the United States. They had an album in 1988. Worth checking out.

The first time I heard Soilent Green was when they did the Squidbillies theme song... their entire discography hasn't left my mp3 player since! I don't see them as being in any genre as they have riffs from EVERY genre! If I HAD to categorize them, I'd put them in with whatever genre John Zorn's Naked City qualifies as... Grind Jazz?

Like the album a lot regardless of the genre. Hard for me to argue what category it falls into b/c I'm more into traditional Death Metal and Melodic Death Metal.
I was blown away when I bought North Atlantic Noise Attack compilation in 1987. At this point I was listening to the Ramones, Minor Threat, Metallica but shit got real after hearing Extreme Noise Terror and Napalm Death. In the 90's I liked Fear of God, Carcass Grinder (Japan), Drop Dead etc. I saw Napalm and Carcass in 92ish and got drunk once with Seth of AC when he was playing in Insult.

From Enslavement to Obliteration is like the only album that track sequence improves with bonus tracks(though the ep orginally came with album anyway) but with flipping the ep order so the curse is final track ending the album how it starts.
I am totally blown away that there wasn't a mention for any of these. Extreme Noise Terror Dropdead Insect Warfare Disrupt SOB I could go on pages but like the dropdead record should have been on the top 10 list along with Insect Warfare.
10 was impossible. I brought a copy of Theatric Symbolisation of Life to put forward, but as you can tell there are just too many good albums... (And Sore Throat are absolute pioneers...I hope there is a noise episode!)

Damn man those are all amazing picks, I hope you still jam out to those albums to this day haha! Terrifyer and Prowler got me into the whole genre, and at first I couldn’t stand Pig Destroyer. Took lots of re-listening, and a desire to understand it.
Sewn Mouth Secrets at 10 years old brought me into extreme metal. I found the song on a peer2peer website, I typed in 'metal' and 'slayer' (because that was the band I liked most on GTA Vice City) and the first song that downloaded was that song (the EP version). If I remember right, it was titled as "Cradle of Filth vs. Fear Factory". It took a couple of years before I found out it was actually Soilent Green.

Goregrind, is Grindcore style, but with gore, pathology, forensic lyrics. That's what Carcass Reek of Putrefaction was, Symphony of sickness still had the grind style but more DM.
Mentioned Cattle Decapitation, but was disappointed it wasn't fully discussed. I think, especially with their last two albums, they are leading the way in terms of visceral brutality, technical drums, insane guitar riffs, punchy bass, and on top of it all Travis Ryans vocals are something to behold; brutal, poignant, political, and a unique sense of disgusting griminess.
DxAx FTW. Also I think deathgrind should be added to the tree. Bands like Assuck, Cephalic Carnage, Maruta, The Berzerker, Cattle Decapitation, Misery Index, Priapus and many others need a place in the metal family tree. Also great episode sam lml.
Interesting you mentioned Australia as a grindcore hub; Vomitorial Corpulence is incredibly underrated as a band, and is influential especially in Christian ultra-extreme music
Good program but the conditions for select a Grindcore Essential Album are not clear. Because I heard any like sounds good, influenced another bands, early appearing, etc.
Righteous pigs 'Live and learn' (1989) is one of my personal favourites. If you are tired on modern, overproduced, de tuned, metal influenced grind with cliched vocals etc, this will feel like a breath of fresh air. Also, odd nobody has mentioned Pungent Stench. Their early albums were pretty decent and the band well known in europe at the time (perhpas more death grind than grindcore?)

Wormrot is off the HOOK!!!! Fast, real tight, singer sounds insane, has some pig destroyer but some SCUM in it. Redo this episode immediately!!!!!!!!!!! Wormrot ABUSE is a masterpiece, it ruined and saved lives, the same exact life.

As far as blast beats it could be argued that Seige ,Repulsion are influential .. and bands like Cryptic Slaughter and Wiermacht that were playing similar beats early on...( even SOD) More notable influences Assuck, Ripcord , Heresy, Drop Dead, Crossed Out, Infest, SOB ,Phobia etc.. The list goes on and on...
Really enjoyed this episode of a genre I've only dipped my toes into to date. Having a guy who really knows his stuff made this one of the better episodes to watch. Kudos to Doug Brown !

I would say that Cryptic Slaughter were a part of the early influence of Grind Core. But, Cryptic Slaughters drummer did Not use what is known as the "Blast Beat" he played using the basic 1, 2 beat which is used in Thrash Metal but at a much faster speed.

But the early German thrash bands, Also played w. The fake blast : 3 hits on hihat/cymbal & 2 on snaredrum. They just opened up the Hi hat you couldnt here that he created 1 hit. But Thats the charm when the genre expands & the musicomas get better 🤠🇩🇰
I just listened to Terrorizer's World Downfall for the first time a week ago, and it's already my favorite album I've heard in a long time! It has that perfect blend of hardcore punk attitude and ethos with super fast, heavy thrash. It just begs to be blasted out of your car as you speed down the highway!
Insect Warfare's "World Extermination" is one of the most influential grind albums in history and probably the most influential to no-bass grind bands along with Inalienable Dreamless, and no one fucking mentioned it??? What???
Siege- Drop Dead, deserves an originator mention. Is "comedy-grind" a sub-genre?....O.L.D. Old Lady Drivers. And for me, nothing comes close to the masterpiece that is *World Downfall*

Powerviolence is not a real genre. It's just extremely fast hardcore. The term "powerviolence" originated as a joke and wasn't meant to be taken serious, but of course genre obssessed nerds promoted it as a real thing. Same goes for speedcore, fastcore, thrashcore, funcore, hatecore, moshcore, speed metal, power metal, white metal, viking metal, war metal, djent, grebo rock and other worthless garbage.
For future episodes we really need a post-metal chart, and most importantly for me, a chart covering the continuation of doom metal in the 90's, Death/doom and Funeral Doom.

It is highly refreshing to have someone so knowledgeable on the subject as a guest. I don't even like Grind and it was riveting listening to him.
The bands I really miss are Fear of God (Switzerland), Patareni (Yugoslavia/Croatia), Ulcerous Phlegm (Germany).

Fear of God was one of the first grind bands outside of the Earache roster that I got a hold of.
Patareni were great too....more on the punk side of grindcore and definitely not for amateur fan of the style

A VERY important band for GoreGrind was Dead Infection . Their second fuul lenght (can´t remeber the name) is EXTREMELY brutal .
So Nails and Bolt Thrower are grindcore but not even a single mention of Insect Warfare? What a joke.

Pungent Stench were always death metal. Discharmonic Orchestra were more deathgrind.

Really enjoyed this episode of a genre I've only dipped my toes into to date. Having a guy who really knows his stuff made this one of the better episodes to watch. Kudos to Doug Brown !

My first experience w grind core speed/drums was Cryptic Slaughter's debut album. But the grind core genre wasnt used yet
I would say that Cryptic Slaughter were a part of the early influence of Grind Core.
But, Cryptic Slaughters drummer did Not use what is known as the "Blast Beat" he played using the basic 1, 2 beat which is used in Thrash Metal but at a much faster speed.
@@antoniodelgado1516 Thanxx Brother. C.S.had a way more chaotic style. More punk/Crossover than the extreme Metal influence. But after you mentioned it, its impossible not to hear. But the early German thrash bands, Also played w. The fake blast : 3 hits on hihat/cymbal & 2 on snaredrum. They just opened up the Hi hat you couldnt here that he created 1 hit. But Thats the charm when the genre expands & the musicomas get better 🤠🇩🇰
I just listened to Terrorizer's World Downfall for the first time a week ago, and it's already my favorite album I've heard in a long time!
It has that perfect blend of hardcore punk attitude and ethos with super fast, heavy thrash. It just begs to be blasted out of your car as you speed down the highway!
Insect Warfare's "World Extermination" is one of the most influential grind albums in history and probably the most influential to no-bass grind bands along with Inalienable Dreamless, and no one fucking mentioned it??? What???

No, because i'm at work when you go live. I usually watch the archive. Extra content for Patreon... I don't know really... I've seen some people offering absolutely nothing. grindcore grew from punk hardcore, thats why the political side is a must, gore grind is a progression towards horrific lyrics , but the musical base its the same

Powerviolence is not a real genre. It's just extremely fast hardcore. The term "powerviolence" originated as a joke and wasn't meant to be taken serious, but of course genre obssessed nerds promoted it as a real thing. Same goes for speedcore, fastcore, thrashcore, funcore, hatecore, moshcore, speed metal, power metal, white metal, viking metal, war metal, djent, grebo rock and other worthless garbage.
For future episodes we really need a post-metal chart, and most importantly for me, a chart covering the continuation of doom metal in the 90's, Death/doom and Funeral Doom.
