Oh yeah, Barry studied game design. Now I remember.
8:07 that's actually REALLY similar to the way Okami handles its areas. When you first enter the area is stuck in eterna night, and everything is dead. Then when you defeat a boss, a wave of life goes over the land, and in a cutscene you see the water coming back in the rivers and plants growing everywhere. And from that point on, you can change night to day yourself (and vice-versa), make trees bloom and even make plants sprout behind you as you run. Now THAT'S satisfying! It'd be pretty dang neat if Skyward Sword had something similar

Not really I mean sequelitis had points Egoaptor just didn't offer as much evidence or solutions it's also much more positive and focused on entertaining instead of just ranting about how the game sucks. I like it I learned some stuff and kind of feel like playing the game and giving it a chance or at least playing Windwaker again now that I understandthe whole atmosphere building thing.
Nope, not at all. It's much easier to pick just one very limited part of the game and then criticize as opposed to take two entire games and then compare while criticizing.

For whatever reason the tone of this is far better than Sequilitis. When Egoraptor does it, he has this whole "I'm right, I know I'm right, you're wrong" feel to it. And that's not totally his fault. Arin has such a sarcastic, knows what he's saying tone to pretty much everything he goes about, which is completely normal. In fact I sorta have it myself. But when you mix that tone with something as opinion driven as analyzing something, it comes off as arrogant and know-it-all. But with Barry, while he doesn't go out of his way to say everything is opinion, his tone is a lot more light and discussion based. While this feels like it could be a conversation, Sequilits feels more like a one-sided rant.
Arin's got British humour even though he's never been to Britain. It's the kind of humour that can be tough to swallow.
I agree with you, but only when we're talking about the Ocarina of Time Sequelitis. I think the Castlevania and Mega Man X episodes were much more conversational and casual in tone (though not nearly as chill as Barry here).
Flench Arin stopped making sequelitis because he only wanted to make a little video about his opinions and everbody started arguing about it. He's a very nice guy and gets way more flak than he deserves tbh.
Who Slew I get that but when you put your opinions in that tone of "I'm right, you're wrong, if you disagree you're a hater/nostalgia blind", people get angry cause of course they do. It's stupid to get mad at people disagreeing with you when you put your opinions in such a way.
Flench Nobody should have to put a big disclaimer up saying 'this is my opinion' when they're reviewing or analysing a form of media just because it might trigger someone otherwise. Everyone should be smart enough to know what an opinion is.

I honestly didn't think the one main area of Skyward Sword that I wasn't a fan of would get addressed but Barry picked up on it. Adding little details and more to explore within the Sky portion would have really given that sense of adventure and discovery that felt absent while travelling to the next destination. Its surprising coming off of WW and TP that such a big section of the game's world wasn't given more attention and in some ways there was a disconnect with the sky section to all other areas, as if it was unfinished or they didn't have time to make more ideas.
I think some of the points discussed in this video could be attributed to technical limitations so I think its unfair to state that they didn't consider adding lots of clouds to weave between and had Link/the Loftwing covered in bits of clouds because it could have created lag that chugged the game. That doesn't mean that maybe some enemies or mini games that give you small rewards or challenges couldn't have been implemented but only if they worked. Not to mention flying at night could have been really relaxing and peaceful like Wind Waker, with different events happening to distinguish it from the day perhaps. I think the ambition of Skyward Sword's world wasn't quite ready technically to be achieved to its fullest.
Also in some ways one point you discussed about the world below being foreboding and stormy then bright and cheery is sort of achieved in reverse with the Shadow Realms acting as a nightmarish version of the secure area you've grown comfortable with, similar to the Light and Dark worlds of previous Zelda games. However I do see how having the world directly change because of your actions rather than being transported shortly to this nightmare area doesn't quite have the same impact.
Aside from this, its really only a few fetch quest like sections that led to some monotony but I found it very enjoyable other than that. Its certainly a must play for the clear heart and soul of Zelda put into it, even if it stumbles in some areas along the way. Its clear that this game after reflecting on it and moving on to future Zelda games was a necessary step in moving the series forward because they went back to the core of what made the original Zelda such a classic but still kept the advancements that made the 3D Zelda games great. Without pros and cons to reflect on, the series may have not made the changes it has so I respect Skyward Sword for the time I played it and what it did to change the series afterwards.

I was expecting another rant from Arin, but Barry did a great job. I totally agree about the fact you can't fly at night at all, and some of the other issues he presents. The worst part of SS for me though is the spoon-feeding. Sure, there were lots of new mechanics, and it was the precursor of the entire series (making it plot-centric), but puzzles didn't really progress. The hardest part - outside of combat - were the locks you had to strike in sequence. WW, OoT, TP and MM had errands and real sidequests that gave the feeling of immersion and choice, whereas the closest thing SS has is fixing a chandelier and gathering crystals for a creepy cosplayer.
There is an 85% chance I will never play Skyward Sword again because of Fi's annoying hand holding during gameplay and also making every cutscene twice as long because she repeats everything you just got told from other characters.

Errands and real sidequests? Are you kidding me, lol Gold Skulltulas are such a great epic adventure! The triforce shards in Wind Waker, golden bugs in Twilight, etc... Am i the ONLY person in the UNIVERSE who got a working Wii mote and played Skyward Sword without any problems? This puzzles me.
No , not the fact that other people think the controls suck,everyone is entitled to their own opinion and all that, but i just don't get why there is this wide gap in opinion, some people like me says it controls just fine while others says that the controls don't work at all.
It's almost like we are talking about different versions of the same game.
Theres a bunch of factors that are important when it comes to how good the motion controls are, like distance to sensor bar, how well positioned the sensor bar and the wii mote are in general among other things (like if the batteries are new/full for example). The motion controls worked at best really but didnt manage to be better than that. Though thats also tied to the fairly basic type of motion controls that was used with the wii.
It's because motion controls in general suck, it's just a gimmick. It will always lose to regular controls, at least for the next 10 years or so.
+Milan0r Sensor bar doesn't matter at all for the Wii Motion Plus. Unplug it and try playing SS, it will work.

SS was clearly meant to be different in many aspects while keeping the spirit of LoZ there, which it did wonderfully. The things everyone liked, like the bosses and dungeons, are things that purposefully had the essence of past Zeldas. The things people started disagreeing upon were the new elements, like the sky/flying, the motion controls, etc. which was bound to happen given how many people past Zeldas had touched, and it doesn't mean the game and its aspects are bad.

Because Barry gets to the point, more or less, states the flaws well, and then adds ways in which it could have been better. Acknowledge what was there, the potential it had, and what could have been done to harness it. He actually puts up a decent argument and makes a good point.

I didn't realize this was a Grump video and I immediately thought it was Arin and got confused
I don't get it. Groose being a dynamic character is not being a flaw. His change was convincing and he was interesting to me and others because he changed. Dynamic Characters aren't bad, I have never heard anyone complain about character growth before now. Groose had every reason to be humbled, when the imprisoned awakened it was obvious to him that Link was more capable in every way. If Groose remained a fuckboy after all of that, he just would have been annoying. Like what right does he have to clown on link after everything that has happened?
Also, the sky was not really that important or the focal point of Skyward Sword. From the very beginning of the game, the focus was the land beneath the clouds and the sky world only served as A. A Hub to get from place X to Y of the real game and B. As a plot point, to add to the mystery of land below.

I think it is actually the wiimotes fault. I always remember having the 'good' remote(s) and 'bad' remote(s) so maybe it was poor quality control.
You're missing one key point. They're motion controls. Latency is subjective to the people playing, some notice it more than others thus creating this conflict.
In the beginning I thought that you would later learn how to fly in the night sky to enter the storm cloud but I was disapointed

It did have a really Sequelitis feeling to it though.
Maybe because Barry helped a lot with the script for the LoZ Sequelitis. Barry and Arin also have very similar opinions on the game, so that's also a big reason.
Why does Arin sound so much like Barry?

It's not about whether or not the motion controls had an issue, it's about the fact you HAD to use motion control, a lot of people simply do not enjoy motion control.

I wonder what Arin will think about Breath Of The Wild. The stamina meter returns and all weapons can break!
The weapons breaking and stamina meters are weird mechanics for Skyward Sword, but this game seems more or less built around those. honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he actually had a good time with it.
The stamina in BotW refills instantly once you stop using it, which is how it was supposed to be from the beginning. Also weapons break, by killing enemies, which yield more weapons, so it doesn't matter.
Yeah, I think the constant switching of weapons would make for a more diverse experience, too. Want to only use swords? Better stock up on 'em.
+Maxime Prime Well in Skyward Sword, only shields can break. That was annoying because not only will you have to go back to the Bazaar to get a new one, but you will also have to get all of the materials and rupees to upgrade them again!
In Breath if your shield breaks, just get another one from a dead guy.
And the stamina meter in that game takes looooooong to run out and it was only put in there really because you can climb literally everything and they don't want you breaking the game by climbing literally.... everything.

Barry please, not only are you just very entertaining, these are very educational for game designers!!! Please make more, hit every side of the games, I realize that would take lots of effort to make long enough videos but something like that would be really nice. Keep up the good work :D
