    I would love to hear if you used Quota to retain that large halibut at the end. I found it interesting that your guide stated incorrect specifications regarding 2019 regulations on the BC coast for size limit for halibut. Would be a lot more admirable if you just stated it was under quota instead of letting the public assume the recreational fisherman can retain something that large...

      The angler retained that fish following all of the rules. Because regulations change so much it's difficult to be specific in episodes that air for many years. I will work on improving that concept though. Everyone who inquires about the lodge is informed of the specific rules for that year.

    When is the best time for halibut

    • @AnglerWestTV
      @AnglerWestTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Traditional thinking is early in the season because there has been less pressure and you may not have to run very far. But, we were there in mid-August and the halibut fishing was good. In all the years I've been going to WH I've never seen "bad" halibut fishing regardless of the date. We've had bad days but always enough good days to make up for it. Calm weather and reasonable tides are important for halibut.

      That rod with the blue Raptor reel is actually mine. It's a Trevala I bought at Fish Field. That rod with the Raptor is a fish killer.

    Using Scent for Lings is just throwing money away lol, idiots will bite anything. Also hire a new deckhand with better aim

    • @AnglerWestTV
      @AnglerWestTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Based on my experience with underwater cameras I think scent can be important and they don't always bite anything. Lingcod are typically found in groups and the smaller fish will often react to a bait before a larger fish will commit which is typical of most species. Scent will encourage the larger fish to bite more quickly. In this case, because of the rough water, we started off with copper bars smeared with Pro Cure which are usually extremely effective just trying to get bit as quickly as possible. For whatever reasons, the P-Line squids with scent ended up being the much more effective lure which was surprising to all of us but a welcome surprise. I always use scent for lingcod mainly because I believe it helps me catch larger fish.
