    You are the King!!! Your customers are lucky to have someone who puts in the care and precision you do. I never surfed but did have years and years of messing around with fins and fin boxes on windsurfing and kitesurfing boards. Thanks for posting these videos!!

    Put a drill bit in your dremel and it's like a router to cut out the boxes. Something i learned from trying to river surf here in wv- go to an auto parts store and look for chip and scratch resistant clearcoat in a rattle-can. I put several layers on my nose and it did wonders for my close proximity with rocks. Wet sand it smooth and repeat for any dings or scratches. I showed it to a shaper on tybee island, originally from Santa Cruz; he started using it on his longboards for the rides into the sand. Scuffs buff out with the minimalist of effort.

      @@Rogue_wave SEM chip guard, "gravel and corrosion protection" clear #39803.
      Give the surface a bit of sanding for it to bond. Any overspray will chip like resin. 🤙🏼

      I’ve been getting a lot of people saying the same thing. Seems like a pretty faulty design and a reason there’s not many sets of them around anymore!

    when we got one of these into the shop i got some foam cutoffs and resined them into the holes shaped them and painted the foam to match board.. glassed the top and bottom for extra strength and did normal glass on fin thing, for the tail points we used fin cut outs from Rainbow fin co, cut off the points equally and added about an inch of this fin material.. shaped and glassed them in

    Great work! Why are the fins first glasses with unidirectional rovings instead of a thickened resin fillet. I use epoxy fillets a lot in boatbuilding and they are incredibly strong, especially when glasses over.

    I have a foil wing board but it does not have a handhold in the bottom of the board which is a Moonbuddy made by Slingshot which makes it impossible to carry to the water

    Question regarding the first time you sanded down those repairs on the tail. A lot of my repairs end up looking like that flaky and splotchy resin when I sand it flush. How could I avoid that or what am I doing wrong ?

      Good question! If the resin is flaking off it means you didn’t sand the surface well enough before applying resin.

    So you used polishing compound on a sanded finish without using gloss resin? You can do that?

      Yeah I almost never use gloss resin, which is just sanding resin + styrene monomer. Sanding resin will come out glossy if you wetsand to 1200 before buffing.

    nice repair ....i thought you would go futures or FCS 2 but that saved the owner the price of 2 keel fins..That X fin system is nasty but not as nasty as an old Lockbox fin system i have on a fish..sturdy enough but dam ugly , would it be too bold to ask how much did you charge?

    Why are you filling big holes with resin and not with foam? Resin is heavier.

      @@texsurfer Gotcha- it's hard to make a foam insert that fits the uneven "walls" or sides of those holes. One could theoretically route a larger hole and then use foam inserts, but that gets risky when you're working so close to the rail. It's also going to take longer, without much of an upside.

      I measured the toe and cant when the fins were in the box (the non loose one that is). I did make marks with pencil they were just pretty faint and hard to see.

      Yeah, might have reduced the weight slightly, but probably not enough to bother with. Overall a good repair I would say.

    Saw another video where the guy cuts some scrap foam to fill in only fin box plugs then he cut new ones. Just a thought versus the weight of the resin fill but whatever works! Nice job, : )

      Also, filler is brittle. I wouldn't use it near fins that are going to flex a lot. That filler will crack one day. Replacement foam, as you say, would be best.

      Yes much faster but be careful how much UV powder you use! Too much and it will cure green/yellow.

      That was actually sanded fiberglass from another board i was working on (I ran out of qcell and cabosil).

      I recently learned a trick when using a file to repair a sliding door. Add masking tape to the end of the file to prevent abrasion beyond the subject to be filed. Also works for saws.

    The problem with good surfboard repairs is nobody notices them. People often say to me "so you have a new board?". "No it's 10 years old". 😔
    This is a very old method of affixing fins. Some retro isn't worth repeating.

    Absolutely incredible work. That customers gonna be paying for that one lol. Prob cost more than that boards worth. But I bet the surfer loves that fish to death so he decided it’s worth it

    Great work, but I have to be an armchair dick and say it hurts to see that much q-cell go into the core of the board. I know it’s a pain to back fill with foam….and the weight addition isn’t crazy for this cruiser board….but still….i would have loved a foam core back fill for the old fin plugs 😢

      It's a fair point... I was just hesitant to use a router that close to the rail (my router tends to jump). I'd need to route a lightly bigger hole to get a clean plug. If it was a high performance shortboard I might've gone for it with the weight consideration.

      I use 8# density pour foam from US Composites for these repairs. That much catalyzed thickened resin in a hole creates a crazy amount of heat too by the way. Kick it hot and pour it in a hole like that and you could have a ruined board or a fire.

    weak repair, its never gona hold in case of any lateral shock
    theres a reason a part of the fin must be screwed inside the board...
    a real fin box is way stronger
