How to Fix a Surfboard - Cracked Rail Ding with Color Match

- Just another quick surfboard repair video showing how to fix a cracked rail ding. I used Aerosil to make the resin lighter and easier to sand.
Sandpaper used in the video:
80 grit to rough up the old glass for good adhesion
150 grit to roughly shape the repaired area
320 grit to feather the new glass into the old
800 grit for finishing
Other materials used:
Sanding Resin
Laminating Resin
Catalyst
white and blue color pigment
Aerosil
6 oz fiberglass mat
disposable gloves
popsicle sticks, 3M blue tape, and Dixie cups

My new resin tinted 9'6 fell off a table with the exact same ding. Finally a very informative diy to tackle it myself. Now I can see how the resin color is achieved.

So should the outer layer be polyester sanding resin or does that depend on my board?

thanks a lot for these instructional videos dude. I learned a lot from you before embarking on my second round of surfboard repair attempts. I'm working on two very torn up and yellowed boards. I ended up sanding some of the original epoxy coating down too far, revealing the fiberglass mat. I tried brushing on a thin layer of epoxy over some of these areas, but I got some drips, in many places it just sanded off and it didn't make the fiberglass disappear behind it anyway. when some of the fiberglass is showing through the epoxy, how do you recommend covering it back up when sanding the rails down too far? Thanks for any tips!!

Great detailed work. Do you use laminating resin over the cloth just to match color or is it structural? I’m not too concerned with matching color. Assuming I can get away with just using poly resin...

Thanks Dan! For minor cracks can you simply fill the crack with solar ez and put a hot coat? How do I know if I need to laminate a layer of fiberglass?

She’s also a beautiful bright orange color, so matching it as close as possible is important to me. I need to get the color from a surf shop as opposed to going to a store to try and match it?

Hi Jake,
I usually just use the 800 grit sandpaper and it turns out pretty shiny, but polishing would make it look nicer especially if the board already has a very shiny glossy finish.

It’s easy to color match a white board. Try making a video of color matching a teal board, or a deep red board. That’s a trick I’d like to see.
I have multiple rail, nose and tail dings on a board returned to me. Do I do these one at a time . . . or is there a faster method?
well done, if youd buffed it slightly with some polishing compound at the end it would have been perfect
Hi! Nice video! Just have a question. I don't have surf pigment, but I do have lots of acrylic and oil based painting at home. Does any of these products work for pigmenting a ding in white color? Thanks!
Hi Mariano,
I am not sure if those pigments would work, but I would recommend just mixing a small batch of resin to test it first. I bought the pigments I have from a local surf supply company called Basham's in San Clemente, CA. I don't know if they would ship them, but you might be able to find them online as well.

Iam i right that the procedure is the same for epoxy and poly board?
Pretty much except that you can't fine tune the cure time with epoxy hardener like you can with polyester resin and catalyst.

What's the difference between sanding resin and laminating resin?
What sanding resin do you use? Is it different then the resin that comes with the epoxy resin fiberglass kit??
Hi Anthony,
This is not epoxy resin, it is polyester resin, which is what you would use on a traditional polyurethane foam blank surfboard. Epoxy resin is used on an expanded polystyrene blank, or EPS for short. The epoxy resin can be sanded.

Polyester resin is used on polyurethane blanks, epoxy resin is used on polystyrene. Polyester resin would melt polystyrene.

Also, is the hardener or fatalist on the epoxy resin different than the polyester resin?
@@Cuisinenomade1 yes, the polyester resin uses a different catalyst than the epoxy resin.
I used 2 layers of cloth. I can still feel the cloth through the sanding coat from yesterday. Should I put on another coat or continue sanding even if it goes through the top layer of cloth?
I would probably sand it a little and do another coat. If you add another coat of sanding resin without sanding the previous coat, if won’t adhere very well because of the wax additives in the sanding resin. If it were laminating resin, then you could just do a coat of the sanding resin over it.

Hey there i want to ask somthing
So after i fixed my board and my crack there is a white scratch area around the fix is it ok?
It’s probably just the edge of the tape line, or some scratches from the rougher sandpaper. It’s probably fine, but you could probably sand/polish it it up a little better to make it go away.

Is there any reason you didn't sand the laminated layer before top coat?
Hi Neil, yes, the laminating resin is very tacky and will gum up the sandpaper.

Resin will melt that sponge brush, keep that in mind. Then you end up with black bits in the dried resin.
Are you using polyester resin on an epoxy surfboard?
Hi Keith, I am using polyester resin on a traditional polyester fiberglass board. A lot of people mistake this board for an epoxy board because of the opaque tint.

@@DantheFixitMan gotcha…. I usually associate no visible stringer with epoxy boards. Although I guess you could use polyester resin/glass if you seal the crack with epoxy first.
@@keithkennedy6702no worries, it’s all good, yeah, the stringer is there, it’s just covered up with the resin tint. I also assumed it was epoxy before I picked it up from a friend years ago for the same reason. It has lots of repaired dings now including one on the tail that I need to fix still…but I am still riding this board a lot.

So a repair is never flush with the board you're adding an extra layer and feathering the edges. ....?
Sort of, but it’s really not noticeable on this repair. You could sand it down more before starting the first layer of resin and then build it back up with the layers of glass for strength and making it flush as you feather it back in.
