when i was a kid my step brother would always bring them home if he seen one in the trash and my dad would fix them i only spent summers there but we had tons of different boards to choose from we hit the beach every weekend to paddle out
While the actual shaping process is not exactly “simple” it does open up a few questions. Should we br taking more old boards back to your local shaper (who arent using robots to shape) and having them refurbished, rather than new blanks?
That’s just awesome! I did the same thing once to a old board, stripped it down and reshaped it a little and glassed it back up with the same fins, didn’t look as nice as yours, but my daughter rides it now…great video, thanks for showing it!
I live in Orange County and love the fact that you created an app for people that need repairs. Even though I love repairing my own boards, I can still support it! Love the videos man
Dude that paint sprayer makes a world of difference compared to the rattle can special. Cant wait to see what else you do with it. Also so sick how you recreated the original livery of the board and kept that for the remodel.
This brought back memories. I built two boards 17 years ago just to see if I could figure it out.....before TH-cam. I had some crumby books to follow. Learned a lot, but learned more from your video. Dam fun to watch.
Excellent. Makes me think more about a No Work Team 6'4" Tri Thruster I'd like to repair and repurpose for my daughter over the next few years. Will have to do some research on dimensions/shape etc...
Thanks for showing this! I made a board about 25 years ago (my 4th and last) and used brand new foam blank and fresh resins (of course!) but old colouring that was probably over a decade old already. Big mistake! The resin set like chewing gum and didn't set properly. Watching your vid, now I've got an idea of how to resurrect it - if I ever do. Vote for: you made a cool new surfboard!
Don't sweat the thought of "ruining a classic" because in time, this entire planet will be microscopic particles of space dust, then reformed into another planet, and other creatures, or possible a sun. And in the meantime - awesome board creation dude! Also loved the music - especially the bongos at 4:33

In the 90s i did this with an old 60s single fin pin. Made a board for my little grom brother out of it. Never realized they would become collectors items now. Every 2nd hand shop was full of old single fin pins back then. Man i used to love riding barrels on them old things.
I always say, if a board isn’t being used it’s truly worthless… there’s obviously a few exceptions (true collectors items, etc) but I think a lot of people get weirdly attached to old boards out of nastalgia. Chop em up, ride em again!
Lot of effort and hard work. Craftsmanship. Sucker for those mid 80's boards. Mostly for the stickers and color as it brings me back. Now you got a lil' shredder instead of an attic dweller!
I noticed you store boards in your attic... have you ever experienced delam or any other issues from storing them up there? I have lots of boards and have run out of storage room...
Sheeeeeeeesh. @@Rogue_wave...most board builders do this...shape the board...route the fin boxes...airbrush the foam board. then set the fins. put tape over the fin boxes. when you glass the bottom of the board the fins are under the glass layers of the board and have more break strength. when you finish hotcoating the board you just sand the fin boxes and screw holes open.
futures and fcs2 are designed with a little lip on the boxes...so the glass layers come over the majority of the finbox when laminated under glass but remain flush with the shape of the foam.
Hey Nick, good question. It’s called the fins “toe” and on thrusters the outside fins are toed in to create more control while the board is on rail. Some fishes and mid twins will have little to no tow, which gives the board a looser “skatier” feel.

I surf for over 40 years and it bothers me a lot seen old boards going to the garbage. What you do is absolutely great!

Great job showing how simple a process this can be. no more old boards going to landfill! Simply a cheaper blank ;)
Exactly dude! Blanks cost $60 bucks now and some of these old boards are going for $20-40 on offer up.
And thanks
I would not call it simple. Reshaping a board needs practice. It is neither the cutting nor the sanding, it is the dimensioning that demands skill.
I like how Yu made a repucla of dude I thought you where just going to change it looks awsome just of gave it to your uncle

I noticed you store boards in your attic... have you ever experienced delam or any other issues from storing them up there? I have lots of boards and have run out of storage room...
Most of the boards up there are already delammed or dinged up! You should be alright with poly. Epoxy boards might delam from heat.
Some of the 1970,s shortboard shapers working for;Brewer-Ben Aipa & Hobie were true craftsman.

Yep, used that for futures for years
What kind of tape are u using? Cause mine is alyways hard to peel of, because it sticks with the epoxy
Indasa tape. But keep in mind I’m using polyurethane resin, not epoxy. That can make a difference with stickiness.
What did you print the decals onto with the printer?
Rice paper 🤙🏻
Amazing job mate!
I say bad idea to lay the stickers down. now it wont bond to the board where the stickers are at. that can be an issue
Hey Joe they aren’t stickers, the logos are printed on rice paper and the resin soaks right through it onto the foam.
the fin boxes are suppossed to be installed before you airbrush...so there is strength in the fins by being set underneath the glass.
You mean before I laminate? If I installed them prior to airbrushing I’d be airbrushing the lam.
