    I like how Max pretends to be crazy to get rid of Noodles and of the others. He has already planned to start a new life. I recently watched the original 4 hours version. Absolutely epic.

    • @warioman91
      @warioman91 5 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      ....that's not what happens at all. Max really was crazy in a sense that his drive for bigger and bigger were going to lead him into trouble. This is why Noodles makes the phone call ratting his friends out on a small bust as a means to get them in jail so as to save them from worse(but they get killed). Why do you think the phone rings for like 5 minutes at the beginning of the movie? Max is so haunted by the guilt of turning in his friends and getting them killed that he can't even sleep(in the opium den). The entire part of the movie that exists in the 60s(?) is all an opium dream as Max works through his guilt. There are plenty of clues to the viewer as well that key it in as a dream. In the final mansion party scenes, there are cameras that display their footage onto some TV screens. But watch what these screens are displaying. You see panning, zooming shots, neither of which are probable of possible unless you have a ton of people at the controls and the cameras themselves are beyond normal technology. Additionally, when Max disappears behind the garbage truck(by the way the truck is a recurring visual), where do you think he went? It's supposed to be surreal and ambiguous in a sense(despite the error they made when creating the shot as you can see the standin actor----Max is not played by James Woods in that shot---stepping up onto the side of the truck, you see his leg in front of one of the tires) And another to note is in the same scene with the garbage truck, there are some shots of Noodles and in the background you can see a building with an oriental roof, similar to the opium den. And this is right before the dream ends.
      Then there's his whole final meeting with deborah, the way the scene is visually framed, the way the conversation goes, and the reveal of her son who is the same actor as young max.
      There's the garbage truck outside the mansion driving away in which its rear lights becomes the headlights of antique cars filled with partiers(implication of prohibition ending) as the song at the opening of the film plays again.

      @@warioman91 I think you can have many interpretations of this movie and ending bud.

    • @warioman91
      @warioman91 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@robbie192 I get that you must feel movies are so oft open to interpretation, but as often as they seem that way they are pretty straightforward in their intent and their ambiguities are just constructed purposefully.

    • @robbie192
      @robbie192 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@warioman91 sergio himself said there are many interpretations to Noodles and the Opium scenes after...I think because the movie begins and ends in an Opium den all scenes after are hallucinations..although others may disagree and be right...how would Noodles know what a frisbee is if this were a dream...

    • @warioman91
      @warioman91 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@robbie192well to focus on the frisbee or other such things is to miss the point. It's a necessary creative liberty, and Leone or one of the writers explains that opium has the tendency to cause hallucinations of ones future(whether it does or not). You should rewatch the scene with the frisbee transition anyway. It's another great example of the feeling of a dream(noodles is walking with the briefcase full of money and the suspense is hard for him to bear)
      Should notice the extent the song yesterday by the Beatles is used twice in the film. At the first transition into the future(which the song itself transitions from the ominous pan flute song with the coney island mural shown), and in the mansion scene near the end as the orchestra at the party plays it. One of the universally noticed themes of the movie is nostalgia, also being part of the appeal.

    The Music here tells more about The characters than the dialogue itself. We can understood in this scene the illusion where the characters are refugied, as a castle of sand, a shimmering mirage, a sunny dazzling day.

    • @JingleJangleJam
      @JingleJangleJam ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ironically I see Noodles as escaping the illusions of the other main characters through opium. Noodles is first driven to opium, since he realises that Max's ambitions are built, as you say, on a castle of sand. We see this in the last scene, Max is fated to be killed, he is not free, despite his power, yet Max, while losing his wealth to opium, has had a moral re-awakening to the illusions, or opium, of power itself.

  • @PokeLexgnzlz
    @PokeLexgnzlz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Since Max's father died in a mental asylum, it's no surprise he doesn't stand being called "crazy". The second time Noodles calls him that in 1933, obviously causing him to snap and knock him out with a gun, immediately cuts to a 1968 scene where Carol reveals to Noodles what happened to Max's father, I guess they did that so we quickly learn why Max hates being called "crazy" so much.
