@@gab1719 my explorer xlt is 2015 too and a water leak in the actual metal of the car leaked during Covid and now I’m full of mold about ready to grow mushrooms. It has under 100,000 miles , V8, top line at its time and is now my second car , but I treated it with kid gloves and is a second car, but I still love it as much as the day I bought it and am going to let my son drive it when he gets his driver’s license next year. I gotta do this. I can’t afford to pay for a Ford fu@$ up honestly. A hole in the metal and the water came pouring down through the passenger visor. Sealed the hole and I have to clean it up. I’m a single mom and had no clue how to deal with such an issue!

Listen, I have a 2015 explorer. Leaked in front & rear. Only two reasons usually for the leak and that’s the panoramic roof leaking or sunroof drain holes are clogged. If you have a front leak then it’s more than likely one or both the front drain holes are clogged. Clean them out with strong pressure air hose or a strong strip of weed eater string. There are 4 total. For the back two the only option will be air unless you remove panoramic roof and I’m sure nobody, including myself, wants to do that. One is located at the top right of tailgate once you open it. And the other is hard to get to but there is a small mud flap in front of the driver side rear tire. It’s held on at the bottom by 2 bolts. Remove the bolts and there will be a hole where you can see that sunroof drain location. You will need some kind of extension air hose to reach it because that hole is the only access to that drain. You will not be able to get to them up top unless you remove panoramic roof. I didn’t. I just blew air through both holes in reverse and that worked. Had someone put their hand where the panoramic roof is to see if they felt air and they did. Took some clear window sealant and sealed the panoramic roof. Hadn’t leaked Since. So I’m like the guy in the vid. Seal the stupid panoramic roof. My rubber was fine but it had a slight give to it. Bounce a little when doors are shut. So I done the same thing. Sealed it.

The true test of a roof drain on a sunroof is whether the water you pour down the drain quickly appears on the driveway in a puddle under the car. Drains are usually clogged the most at the bottom, and the drain lines can hold a lot of water before they back up completely. The cure is not to take the headliner and trim apart to replace the drain lines, but to use compressed air from an air compressor (or portable air tank) to blow the crud out of the existing drain lines. When you do this, and if you are successful, you will immediately see water and crud in a puddle directly under the exit point of the drain line. Each drain line has to be located and blown out separately. Find a video demonstrating this procedure, and pay attention to the recommended amount of air pressure. If you have never used an air compressor or hand tools, this is not recommended for you - you could damage your car, and hurt yourself and others if you do this incorrectly.

If water is overflowing the track based on your parking with the rear downhill, it seems fairly likely to me that your issue was the REAR drain tubes clogged. There must be drain tubes at all 4 corners in order to handle cases of vehicles not parked on level ground.

  • @jamesacker7343

My 2013 was leaking down the seat belt far back right corner I to the spare tire well. I pulled the upper corner trim around the seat belt and there was water on the back side. Thought it might be water coming in around the rear wash spray hose. I sealed around that and a rubber plug nearby. Tide a rag around the seat belt to catch the water if it leaked again. Sure enough it leaked again. So I poured some alcohol up by the hatch hinge and found the leak. It was the seam where the roof panel was spot welded to corner panel. So I wire brushed it and cleaned it and put some JB Weld over the seam and the next day I tried the alcohol test again and had no leak. I am leaving a dry rag around the seat belt to keep an eye on my repair.

I bought a used 2013 limited this summer. I noticed leaking through my rear roof, so we cleared the sunroof drainage. That fixed that problem temporarily although it still has to be done here ans there. We noticed hand-done sealant around the moonroof and assumed people were dumb/didnt look into the drainage problem.
Then, this fall with western washingron rain, i had multiple STREAMS OF WATER coming in through the dome light and the seal of my passenger door. I was scooping water off of my floor with a paper cup this week. This means there are so many leakage points that theres probably NOTHING i can do. And I'm in the worst climate to own a car with this problem. Just a warning. Dont buy this car unless you live in a sunny state. Dont make the same mistake I did.

It appears from the video your drain wasn't working. Once you poured the water into the drain a puddle should have formed behind your front driver's side tire. From what I could see your driveway was totally dry meaning the water never made it out. You can pour in water then used compressed air to blow it out or run some nylon tubing down the drain (1/8 or 5/32 should fit). Thanks for the help though. I didn't know about the drains till I saw your video.

Just called Ford and the service department said this is such a common issue they have a 3rd party company that comes in and reroutes the drains to fix the issue. This just happened to my Explorer in middle of winter after snow so wondering if that has something to do with it.
FYI and also Ford just mailed out Free replacement for your roof rack if your having issues with it too.

I have owned a 2018 Ford Explorer Sport from brand new. Beautiful SUV and pretty nice to drive but these very mysterious leak issues have driven me mad! First it was leaking from dome light and dripping from my rear view mirror. Next it seemed to move to right passenger seat belt, gushing out like a waterfall when I reversed out of my parking spot at work after a torrential rainfall. Third time, it happened the same on the left passenger side, after reversing in my driveway, after heavy rainfall. Fourth time, leak filled my cargo area (thank goodness I had a cargo liner) and when I reversed I heard a big sloshing water noise coming from the rear. When I looked in the back from my driver’s seat I could see water gushing underneath the right passenger seat onto floor mat! When looked in the cargo area I could see that it was totally wet but had all sloshed out under the right passenger seat. I have taken it to FORD four times and each time they do a water test and can’t find the leak(s). Now that it’s out of warranty, they will not look at it without charging me for a water test. I should have gotten rid of it as soon as we noticed this problem. We have owned 5 Explorers. Never again.

I have removed the roof rack and sealed the bolt holes, ...cleared the 2 front sunroof drains, ....and sealed around the rear hatch hinges and the corners where the roof seam meets back hatch ...the STILL LEAKING !!
    Any other ideas ?

    • @SealofPerfection
      @SealofPerfection 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

One is visible if you open the hatch and look at the top right of the opening. You'll see the grommet with and open hole, that's the top. The left rear exits behind the panel into the floor.
But those aren't the leaks. You'll want to look at the body seam just inside of both the hatch hinges.
Raise the hatch, clean off just to the inside of where both hinges bolt to the body...you'll see that the sealer kind of looks "erupted" like it had a mini earthquake. That's where 99% of the leaks in the rear on these are. Chip away the broken sealer. Clean the area really well with solvent. Scuff it with fairly rough sand paper for better adhesion.
Seal it with urethane seam sealer. You can buy it at a parts store on on Amazon or at a local body and paint supply store. Lord Fusor HD is excellent. 3M is good, too.
Don't use silicone, it won't last.
It's kind of a pain to get to...you have to have the hatch partially closed and you bend down and get under it to work on it. Make sure you're TOTALLY done...then close the hatch and don't open until the sealer is fully cured...usually 24hrs.
Urethane will hold up basically forever if you do it right.

I do, it's from the water getting in and then sitting in this Florida sun I live under. I'm going to clear my drain lines and check the corner seal earlier ppl were commenting about in this thread. For the mold, I spray vinegar on a regular basis. Vinegar is better to kill mold than bleach since it doesn't evaporate as quickly. A regular spray down will kill it all, but if the vehicle is still leaking, don't stop when the mold disappears!

@@merlin8701 Roof racks on Explorers don't leak much. Escapes do, but not Explorers. I've probably seen maybe 2 on Explorers. Your problem was probably a combination of that failed seal and the rear sunroof drains not flowing enough. The seal isn't supposed to keep out all the water, just most of it, and the drains get the rest. Sunroof always has 4 drains, 2 front, 2 rear. That's why it leaked when you parked with the nose up...the rear drains don't get any water funneled to them when it's flat or nose down.

I inspected the hinge area and found cracks and chipping of whatever they used to attempt to seal that area. After scraping all that hardened and cracked sealant, l used white RTV to reseal the area. It took different times to get all of the areas adequately sealed. As of right now there are no more leaks! But, I'll be checking at every heavy rain shower to verify that it is actually been solved. Did this work? I have a 2013 Ford Explorer and it was leaking as well. Not only did it leak my sunroof motor blew out too! Took it to ford they said my drain pipes were collapsed and i had to replace them and also put a new motor for the sunroof! 2 years later same crap!!! Started with the leak in the dome light now the sunroof won’t open!!!! How is yours now? Please let me know, thinking of getting rid of this truck because of this issue!! Thank you!

I went up top with the roof open and blew out the lines using a nozzle with my air compressor, same with the rear and then put water down them and made sure I saw water flowing out of all 4 drains before calling it a job done.... has not leaked since. I guess seasonally blow your drains out... pollin sludges up, wet leaves and what not so its good to add this to the maintenance periodically.

My husband & I just purchased a new to us, 2015 Ford Explorer Sport in 4/2020 from a dealership for $18,900 with about 83k miles on it (very good price right now). I found a puddle of water in my pssgr floorboard last week after it rained. It has rained a off & on all night last night & today & this morning I found a puddle with 4 times as much water in my front pssgr floarboard (10/29). Then while waiting on my son to get out of school, I notoce that water is getting in the top right. Just outside the sunroof by the pillar & closer to my sun viser. I seen a few drops of water running & dripping off my "oh sh!t handle" on pssgr front side. I also noticed where the pillar stops, you can push in on the material & its like you're squeezing water out 😔. I loved my Edge & I had wanted an Explorer for sometime now, I hope it doesn't become a nightmare for me, though. I really love my Explorer
