Thanks RevMatchTV, although I have mix opinion about the new Supra, but still, I like this car for what it is. A car for car enthusiast. More power to your channel, thanks again.
Toyota isn't too specific about the suspension revisions, are they? I'd like to know what they did with 2022 suspension revisions. Do you feel that 2021 traction control intervenes sooner than 2020? Do you think Toyota made revisions to the eDiff?
Here is what Toyota said about the 2021 changes: "The Supra 3.0 chassis was also tweaked heading into its second year of production. Lightweight aluminum braces were added to increase lateral rigidity, along with front and rear bump stops and new damper tuning. Revised programming for the electric power steering (EPS), Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Active Differential made the Supra more stable through quick transitions, such as compound turns." 2022 is has no mechanical differences from the 2021 as I understand it, but there are programming changes. Here are the 2023 changes: "To counter the possibility of “snap-off” oversteer - something that may be hard to control with the car’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) alone - an Anti-Roll Program (ARP) has been adopted for both the manual and automatic versions of the GR Supra. This intervenes at an earlier point with the VSC to cover any sudden loss of grip when the car’s high-response suspension setting it used. In addition, the Track mode has been tuned to allow for easy drifting with freedom of throttle control. The vehicle remains agile, but there is less risk of spinning thanks to specific engine and torque control." To answer your question, in the 2021 TC intervenes more seamlessly and and the car feels more planted overall. There are some other minor adjustments to valving, spring rate, sway bars and VSC that keep improving every year, but the big change was for 2021. For 2023 the VSC is at Porsche levels of refinement when I drove it on track.
Thanks for bringing the quality content! I gotta ask if you’re sure that you drove them both hard enough to really feel what the suspension was like? None of the driving in the video seemed quick enough to really make the car work hard but maybe you pushed it a bit harder off camera?
I had the 2021 at pretty ridiculous speeds in the canyons the day after but the footage was not good so it didn’t make the final cut. Suspension wise there is minimal difference. It’s mainly just a very mild update to the dampers to give them more rebound and a little more roll stiffness. I had my 2020 on the track today and it’s such a joy to drive fast. It’s a wildly capable chassis. Here’s my session from today. Only my second time at this track and second time on track with the Supra but it’s extremely easy to control. The suspension in these cars is fantastic. Here’s my session th-cam.com/video/SvmA5V74cPg/w-d-xo.html
In retrospect, probably a good idea. The thinking at the time was to try to replicate how a lot of drivers will do pulls. My time with the car was unfortunately very limited.
@@revmatchtv yea man i did and i watched many of ur videos and i think i am kind of started to understand what ur trying to say before u even say it... Lol
Appreciate your time and effort in this video. Made me feel a bit better on my 2020 lol. Have a great day bro. Catch up with u soon on Instagram about our conversation.
I’ve ordered my car last Dec, but I changed my order to MY2021 when I saw the announcement of MY2021 improvements, guess what, Toyota sales guy called me last week to ask if I’m interested to buy MY2020 for more discount, my answer is NO.
Looks like the more recent 2021 cars cannot be tuned. Bosch has changed the bootloader and so far, no one has been able to access it. This will affect a wide range of cars going forward including BMW.
@@revmatchtv I've heard MY2021 built before 7/30 is still tunable. Any 2021 built after that date cannot be tuned so far. So much for Tadasan claiming these cars are tuner friendly. Maybe he meant suspension, wheels, aero kits and basic bolt ons. I'd hardly called that "tuneable". Checked my build date and is says 3/20 so hopefully I'll be able to get a tune soon.
The 2021 is not slower. It sounds pretty much the same to my ears. But it wasn’t necessarily faster all the time either. A drag strip would be a more reproducible test.
I find heads up drag racing comparisons completely useless. Different reaction times, driving styles, etc etc, there are just TOO many factors that change the results. I find more use in seeing multiple runs by the same driver using some type of GPS timer(then use an average), and even compare some dyno results(I have seen 388 to the wheels on the stock 21) Having said that, I would agree that most typical drivers would not likely know the difference, but if someone is indeed considering tracking the car, the 21 chassis/motor updates give you a better place to start. Having said that, having driven the 2020, and know several people with them, there should be no regrets in owning them, as the mods are plentiful.
Unfortunately too little time was available with this car to test. I’ve driven the 2020 on track a few tiles and ultimately if you decide that’s something you want to pursue you’ll modify the car anyway. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the 2020 despite what Robert Mitchell will have you believe. Having driven both back to back, I would doubt there is much significant difference in track behavior as the suspension differences boil down to minor tuning changes.
Mark I like your comment. I am going with your ideas, it just makes sense to perform some controlled tests. I have a 2020 I am happy with it. I think if Jacky Ding can take on a C8 with his mods I can live with mine. There is no reason to blow a gasket over a new model year of a given car.
If you're gonna leave the car stock the 2021 is clearly a better choice, but if you will tune it the 2020 is superior with the higher compression on an ethanol blend.
To be honest, I hope they don’t waste their time. About 1% or the people saying they’d buy if it had a manual could actually afford to buy one anyway. My tuner and I had planned to do a manual swap. After I drove it I wasn’t sure. First time he drove it he said ‘yeah, we’re not doing that any more, it doesn’t need it’.
@@revmatchtv Mike's car is a beast. Even sounds like a 2JZ. Got to ride in it right after u guys filmed.. might have to pick up a '20 soon... Enjoying ur channel!
The 2020 does not feel planted. Having driven both, the 2020 feels twitchy right off the bat and does not inspire confidence. The 2021 is a more planted and predictable, no matter where you push it.
The suspension changes do inspire a bit more confidence, but overall they amount mild differences in tuning. I’ve driven the 2020 on track a few times. It’s a rewarding car.
@@revmatchtv I did and you make it sound as if the 2021 isn't really worth it over the 2020 MY. However, every car journalist out there said the 2021 is the better deal. That's why I said it sounds more like a buyers remorse vid.
@@mrjjthor I mean. Other than the 21 being more tunable and retuned it is a 50/50 debate since 20s will be cheaper once the 21s will start rolling around so just a tune alone would be enough to either get the same power/faster than the 21 for a cheaper price than buying a full out new 21.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 most definitely the 2020 would be a better deal if someone got it for $7k or more off MSRP. However, the guy got it at MSRP and flew out of state to pick it up and it sounds like he's trying to validate his own purchase. I'm sure his yellow Supra was well north of $50k.
mrjj if you’re paying MSRP it’s absolutely worth the $500 premium. The updated engine is likely to have more tuning potential. The suspension differences are minimal. The ride quality is the same. Other journalists drove them a year apart. I specifically wanted to drive them back to back. Matt Maran Motoring and Albon have a similar position to mine. I took a lot of care to be as unbiased as I could be and drove them on the same roads within minutes of each other. I explained the differences in the video as best as I could without going into endless detail. Right now 2020 models are going for $48-49k. Is the 2021 worth a $9k premium over a 2020 at a discount? Absolutely not. Is the 2021 a better car overall? Yes it is. It’s a very nice incremental upgrade, but this is not like the Mustang going from the 4.6 to the Coyote.
A little bit of everything you say = it will make very much difference in total , also both cars got dyno there are noticeable WHP difference also the 2021 got bigger screen AND also when you raced you only floor it for 3 seconds ..... WTF do think it's a Buggati and want it to destroy you from a jump without little struggle ??? are you serious you are just a 2020 butthurt owner that's it
Three seconds is about 100mph. Sorry I got the car for 3 days on short notice and was not able to book track time. The 2021 has the same size screen as the 2020.
Great review, and as 2020 owner, the question is, with aftermarket parts we can match the 2021, and it seems to be the case. As you said, would be interesting to see how the 2021 engine respond to mods. I am about to go for the Pure800 turbo and maybe port injection, that for sure will make more power on the top end and above 500 whp with pump 91 gas. More compression means more power but also make it easier to knock, while the 10:1 of the 2021 will allow more boost, I would like to think that the higher compression could get good gains with meth. Let's see. Still 500 whp for the size and weight of this car, is more than enough to have fun and to get into trouble.
With that setup you will make LOADS of power. The pure800 is good for about 100hp alone. It’s an easy install too. You can surpass the 2021 in power with nothing but a tune. Due to time constraints, I failed to include a 4th car which was tune only. It was much much faster than the 2021.
If the car has relatively bad rod placement to the control arms, like the previous 2020 model does, even if the track is smooth it will slip out on rolls, hills or even on braking and accelerating due to weight transfer as it's not a race car. People have driven 2020 model on track and it still does exhibit pretty bad bumpsteer on tracks when most car that suffer that on road tend not to on tracks. Idk about you but I don't think driving 50mph or so on a slightly curvy road is a good enough meteric to see if a car is stable mate. If someone is drivin fast enough, it might slip out and be the end of them.
Also, I am talking about how it's not explicitly Bump related not about hiw it works if that wasn't clear. If you don't know how bump steer works you can refer to some engineers even on youtube that can explain that well enough.
No, the 21 is faster. It makes more power, handles a bit better, and pulls harder overall. I drove both and ended up with a 21. Now if you can get a really good deal on a 20, then that's great also. When I say good deal I mean getting a 20 below $48k before tax. Got my 21 for $53.5k before tax. MSRP was at $57.6k and I got the dealership to take off $4100.

Exactly. This is an incremental, 2nd year upgrade. Not as earth shattering as you might have heard. The newer 2021s cannot be tuned afaik due to a new ECU.
It's obvious from your demeanor, facial expression, engine noise and pedal effort in the 2021 that you were leaning toward a good result for the 2020. I call it the ouji board effect. No one is making it spell out words yet it is. If you wanted that 2021 to win you would have smoked the 2020. We have the luxury of now knowing the 2021 has been dynoed at over 400 hp and 400lbft of torque.
Several years later I can say that the 2021 press car didn't feel as strong as I expected. We actually dynoed it (which I didn't include in the video) and it was a bit down on power compared to owner 2021s. There was very little butt dyno differences between those two particular cars on that day. Press cars are beat on pretty heavily, and it's possible the one I had was not at peak performance. And yes, we were using full throttle, there was no sandbagging.
I feel like the one that will have the big difference in power and driving experience will be the A91 Edition. That’s the one it has to be compared to. And the steering wheel it the only thing full Toyota in that interior, same as the LC 500 and it looks hideous!! Toyota should had use the Lexus RC F steering wheel instead.

@@mehdidamfs3112 Most people aren't professional drivers hence they won't have such a sensitive sense to the car, likewise how a professional chef would whine over the food being a little too salty or a pro musician would complain about very slight imperfections most members of the public wouldn't notice the difference
Good analogy
Thanks RevMatchTV, although I have mix opinion about the new Supra, but still, I like this car for what it is. A car for car enthusiast. More power to your channel, thanks again.
Appreciate it!
Great video - thanks for the time you put into this platform and sharing the feedback and information found
Glad you liked it :)
The vehicle remains agile, but there is less risk of spinning thanks to specific engine and torque control."
To answer your question, in the 2021 TC intervenes more seamlessly and and the car feels more planted overall. There are some other minor adjustments to valving, spring rate, sway bars and VSC that keep improving every year, but the big change was for 2021. For 2023 the VSC is at Porsche levels of refinement when I drove it on track.
@@revmatchtv Thanks for taking time to break it all down, Eric. Appreciate it.
Why didn't you both start in a specific gear while in manual mode for the race and then punch it?
In retrospect, probably a good idea. The thinking at the time was to try to replicate how a lot of drivers will do pulls. My time with the car was unfortunately very limited.

I’ve ordered my car last Dec, but I changed my order to MY2021 when I saw the announcement of MY2021 improvements, guess what, Toyota sales guy called me last week to ask if I’m interested to buy MY2020 for more discount, my answer is NO.
Enjoy your new Supra when you get it!
You'll be happier with the 21. Drove both and I enjoyed the 21 more.
@@mrjjthor facts I have a 2021 supra and check out my channel for the baseline Dyno these put out
Looks like the more recent 2021 cars cannot be tuned.
The 2021 sounds like it’s trying to slow the car down a lot when u go down hill u can hear it
The 2021 is not slower. It sounds pretty much the same to my ears. But it wasn’t necessarily faster all the time either. A drag strip would be a more reproducible test.
Great informative video. I’m an M2 competition driver, but love the Supra
I haven't driven them back to back yet, but I hope to.
2021 will handle more boost
We will know pretty soon how it responds to tuning. It should in theory but it needs to be tested.
@@revmatchtv annnnnnd the ecu still isnt cracked 😳 this is making me want a 2020 😂😂
is there a way to visually spot the difference between these 2 cars if they were sitting next to each other?
No. The 2020 in the video has red mirror covers, but aside from that they are visually identical.
@@revmatchtv Sounds like the 2021 features engine bay braces while the 2020 does not? I'm talking about anything interior and exterior.
You not going fast enough to feel the difference 😂
If you're gonna leave the car stock the 2021 is clearly a better choice, but if you will tune it the 2020 is superior with the higher compression on an ethanol blend.
Oli So far that’s what we have found. When we can get a 2021 to tune we’ll learn more.
Putting a lot of lives at danger for this review. Thank you.....
Great video as always Eric!
Thanks Duncan :)
Can you tell a difference with the added HP on the 2021 in terms of speed and power?
Too early to tell. No one's gotten their hands on any 21s to start adding power/tunes and etc.
I test drove both and the 21 is definitely faster. Pulls harder in the higher rpm.
superb coverage! We need to get a hold of one to review also ;)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Manual for sure in 2022.
It's a possibility =)
no chance
@@AcmeRocket There are discussions happening at Toyota. Shhhhh....
I’d buy a manual, but Toyota knows there’s a small market. The auto is really good.
I love the pops and burbles on my stock 2020. Sounds like they got rid of it for 2021. 🤔

Maybe they should dyno both cars while in stock condition.
It's been done several times and the 2021 has dynoed around 50hp more than the 2020.

I’m assuming you didn’t watch it?
The 2021 has the same size screen as the 2020.
the only real way to see if its faster is the same driver does like 5 0-60 runs in each car, 2 seperate drivers isnt really accurate
I disagree. The only way to find out accurately is on a track. Unfortunately due to very limited time with the car, track time wasn’t possible.
@@revmatchtv but if u do a simple 0-100 (0-60mph), you then know which is the faster car.
When showing the races we don't want to see your face. We want to see the race lol
My secret location had limitations ;)
Nice, I wanted to see that

Bumpsteer is not necessarily the rear stepping out when you hit a bump but ok
Can you explain what it is then?
I’m glad you made this video I was worrying if you get the 2020 or 2021 now I know it’s basically the same and might as well get a 2020
There are great deals on the remaining 2020s
Is the 2020 faster ? It seems it won’t the race twice? I’m confused sorry. So the xtra HP is not worth it. Again very confusing lol 😂
MSRP was at $57.6k and I got the dealership to take off $4100.
mrjjthor Thor thanks that was a great price

The A91 is mechanically identical. It’s strictly an appearance package. The steering wheel is directly out of a BMW actually - down to the buttons.
