    The 2020 Toyota Supra didn't, unfortunately, light the enthusiast world on fire. While a new Toyota sports car is always welcome, the fact is, the Supra is a thinly disguised BMW Z4 with a fixed roof. Furthermore, it wasn't exactly finely tuned out of the box. For 2021, Toyota has re-programmed all computers, from the ECU to the ESC, the differential, adaptive dampers and gearbox, plus changed the bump stops to hopefully improve the bump-steer situation. The changes are substantial, but is that enough to make the Supra lustworthy?
    Correction: I incorrectly guessed 295 section rear tires in the video. They are 275 section.
    Toyota provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

      TheSmokingTire I’m pretty sure before they even dropped the 2020 Supra, at the pres conference, they said that they were going to release updated versions of the Supra every year for the next five or seven years I think. So the people that bought 2020 supers and think that they got screwed over, they should’ve done the research just a little more and they would’ve known that...

      TheSmokingTire and also there are a couple companies that have made an aftermarket part that you put on the mirrors on the door to get rid of the wind buffeting when the windows are down. I think it’s only like a $20 upgrade. But it most definitely is a necessity.

    • @BrendanEvan

    • @0Camus0
      @0Camus0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, is not like the current head can't flow well enough for 1000 hp (Papadakis) or 750 whp (Adam Lz). Currently the bottle neck is not the engine, nor the head, is the transmission...

    • @nf1369
      @nf1369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It also has a larger turbocharger, different cylinder heads, and has a different bottom end (as of now I can't tell exactly what about the bottom end is different but what's telling is that the compression ratio of the 2021 Supra is different to the Z4).
      In a vacuum, the 2020 Supra has better acceleration because the 2021 Supra gets its full torque 200 rpm later than the 2020 Supra. However in real life, that 200 rpm difference is pretty negligible because the 2021 has a way fatter power and torque band than the 2020 throughout the entire rev range, so the 2021 Supra beats out the 2020 Supra in acceleration anyways and would walk the 2020 Supra at higher speeds.
      What's really telling is that once you look at Car and Driver's dyno results of a 2021 vs a 2020 Supra, the 2021 easily has another ~50 horsepower and ~30 lb-ft of torque more than the 2020 Supra from 5000 rpm all the way to when everything drops off redline, meaning the 2021 Supra would pull like a freight train on the 2020 Supra at the top end and would run away into the distance after they're both neck in neck for a couple of seconds assuming you race them from a standing start.
      The 2021 is simply an order of magnitude faster. However I actually like the sound of the 2020 model better.

    • @RalfMilo
      @RalfMilo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@0Camus0 It will be a restriction once the aftermarket really gets going at making power with the B58. Porting an integrated manifold head is much more difficult and it still won't flow as well as a traditional ported head. A better flowing head will make the same power at less boost.

    The 2021 model uses new pistons that decrease the compression ratio from 11:1 to 10.2:1. Decreasing the compression ratio allows MUCH more boost. The new car is not only much faster in stock form but will also be much easier to tune to extremely high horsepower numbers. The 2021 model is the one to get.

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Wow, that is a major change, very weird. The lower compression ratio makes for a little less response and decreased fuel economy though. Not that will make any difference when you swap out to a bigger turbo, lol.

    • @LearningFast
      @LearningFast 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      SI0AX decreasing the compression ratio does decrease fuel economy slightly but has little to no detrimental effects on all performance aspects. The new Supra is as fast or much faster than the old one almost every single rpm across the rev range. There is no good reason to have an 11:0 compression ratio in a turbo charged car. I could only find two other vehicles that do it and those cars are not that well regarded.

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@LearningFast I heard the only real performance advantage to a higher compression ratio is reducing turbo lag and boost threshold. But with a big turbo, I don't think it's going to make much of a noticeable difference and the cons of the high CR on a turbo car outweighs the pro's.

A Toyota nameplate doesn’t make it reliable, just like a BMW badge doesn’t make it unreliable. If the new Supra had a manual you'd likely be saying it was wayyy more fun. Jackie Ding's channel has a new Supra where he races it and broke lap records even before all the major upgrades. The older mk4 Supra has more nostalgia but wasn't a track warrior. For 2021 it even handles better than the 2020 in addition to having a new engine and turbo

    The wind buffeting is so easily fixed with fins that introduce turbulence into the air running between the side mirrors and the windows. But the fact that Toyota hasn't introduced this fix with the car suggests to me that disrupting airflow in those channels messes with the driving dynamics of the car. • @joeracer302
      @joeracer302 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      It’s a tooling production issue and the fact that this car already cost so much during development. A simple fix like this costs millions to implement and some testing needs to be recertified for homologation, e.g. mpg certification like another mentioned (possibly, sometimes can write an engineering justification and use other tests and simulations to get around more testing), so they aren’t keen to make changes that aren’t already budgeted. Also, they’re a huge company and not always the most agile with changes. Source: used to be product development engineer at one of the Big 3, and it was eye opening learning how much “simple fixes” cost to implement across a production fleet.

      @@acoustic6865 No the car itself certainly helped that whole thing because of its design, beauty and sheer cool factor. We couldn't have even taken the A80 to viral heights back then because the internet was not wide spread like it is today. Back then they also targeted the wrong market with the car but people got wise pretty quickly and it didn't take much more than a glance to be like, damn that thing is cool. The next best thing is a lexus SC300 which actually looks more like a thinner luxury supra. Itr just pains me to see what they did with the new one they didn't need completely redesign the car they could have made the old designs better just the same. Just imagine a slightly refined Supra with updated electronics and interior components. Some changes to some interior aspects and new plastics gawd it would have been a show stopper.

I think this is such a great mix. If you want sth that is practical and easier to live with go get a Camry . But the Supra is a car that serves a purpose , and the purpose is an affordable sports car that can do daily and track work while still be reliable .each car needs to be judged based on the price context it falls under

      It's just how it is, I am very glad that there is a new purpose-built sports car on the road but the package is not exciting other than the Japanese styling. If the car doesn't get people going then it just doesn't no matter how good the car is on paper, especially when it does not have a manual (which will change in the very near future I believe). With that said I am looking forward to the 400z and see how will that compare to this.

Without a little wind outlet behind the driver’s windows, buffeting can be an issue. Unfortunately, BMW sealed the rear quarter windows shut in the subsequent 3-series coupe. In comparison, a car with 2-4 times the power, torsional stiffness, and chassis dynamics of the Supra would obviously be superior.
      I think the inherent value of a review from an automotive *journalist* is that they have driven literal THOUSANDS of cars, and can therefore make a much more meaningful conclusion than someone like me, who has driven about 10 different cars ever, and 2 with enough regularity to have some semblance of an understanding of how they are dynamically. There are other journalists whose opinions I also respect, who have more positive views on this car's dynamics than Matt Farah does. So that's all I was bringing up.
      It's strange, because I watched the one take again, and Matt somehow makes the whole video have a negative undertone, despite praising it in little doses throughout. My supra handles and has zero bodyroll with H&R Lowering springs. Fitment is on point and a 911 cant even catch up with me in the canyons. From a dig and a roll if u tune a 2020 supra it will still take on this.

      Gotta call BS on the windshield- I had a rock hit me while I was at highway speeds that I swore would have left a crack or even a hole and there was no mark. They didn't fix the wind buffeting which is true... but fortunately there's a near invisible fix for $8 that takes about 1 minute to apply. There are C8s getting engine and tranny replacements in a couple weeks or months of ownership and every Supra thread I see people complaining about the wind buffeting, lol. I guess that means the car really has no issues to speak of, which is a good thing!

    Basically what I get about the new Supra from a few years worth of input now from various car people is this; Is it a great sports car? Yes! Just don't compare it to the original. The only time this car starts to show real issues is comparatively. The old Supras still exist if you really care enough. But the fans of the old car also have to understand after 20 years a company has to change the car to be competitive and meet modern regulations.

  • @stevew145
    @stevew145 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So, what is a supra supposed to be that this car isn't? People always say that the new supra isn't what a supra should be, but they can never follow up with what they mean. I think the real question to ask with this car is; if BMW can build the supra at 3350lbs, with a factory LSD. Why in the name of sweet baby jesus is the m240i 3870 fucking pounds with smaller rear seats than the outgoing, 400lb lighter m240i!!!
    The supra seems to be in a class of it's own. Now more than ever a lightweight, powerful car is hard to find or incredibly expensive. 3350lbs, 450 hp(in reality), front engine, rear wheel drive, good fuel economy, LSD, ability to fit massively wide tires on it, endless tuning abilities. If toyota would have made the supra a full Toyota "supra" it would be in GTR price territory. $100K+ likely heavier, bigger, and maybe a little more powerful but everyone would say "who is buying a 100k Toyota?!" "It's too expensive!" And they would likely still complain that it doesn't have a 2JZ.
    The only thing I think they could have done better was the throw a 6 speed in it. I feel like that was BMW and not Toyota though. If you don't mind a 2 seater, and you're of more reasonable proportions I think the supra is the car to buy. I think what BMW has done here is shoot themselves in the foot. They can build lightweight cars that are fast and fun to drive, but they keep making bigger and heavier cars. Why BMW? In reality, the supra is the new z4 m coupe.

      Blane Gray my wife hates the Camaro, one of her friends has one that she’s been in for comparison, and she said the same thing when we went to test drive the Supra (I was thinking it would make a good daily for her). The visibility for such a small car is sooooo bad, worse than a Camaro, which is one of the worst cars I’ve been in for visibility. Yes you can get used to it, but good visibility is nice. I had higher hopes for this car, sad that it lets me down.

    • @blanegray1
      @blanegray1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeracer302 I daily a Camaro, and I am not even going to try to defend the visibility in that vehicle. One of my coworkers has a 2020 Supra, I didn’t drive it, but I did give it a solid once over bumper to bumper. The two things that stuck out were the interior roof line and driver space. It felt as tight as any Miata I have ever been in, not necessarily unusable, but not comfortable. I feel like even if they did add a manual option it would be such a tight space to operate in that I couldn’t make it work outside a weekender/racer

    2020 to 2021 from the power perspective, the 2020's have been so easy to make extra that the limiting factor right now is the transmission. Stock to stock the 2021 has it, but a couple grand into some parts and tuning, and you end up with essentially equal cars.

    Hi Matt, Did you try rolling down both windows together, that's supposed to ""fix"" the window buffeting issue? It does seem to appeal massively to the tuner market though, do you think that is Toyota's intention? Also the styling definitely nods to the Mk4, even though it is based on a BMW so maybe they are playing on that nostalgia point. I kinda like it though.

    Although I've only driven the 2020 GR Supra and did mostly enjoy it except for the lack of manual transmission, I can really see where Matt is coming from on this. This car is not at all true to the legacy of the mighty Supra name plate, and I do hope it's enough of a sales hit over its current run that Toyota may bring development of it back in-house for the sequel. Thank you for one of the most honest impressions of the car to date, and I definitely agree with your overall thoughts.
