This was truly a show that could have you laughing one minute , worried the next and saddness when there is a death, incredibly good show that you wont see on TV today
My parents lived together for 50 years and I never saw them hugging. You have to have happy parents to have Good Times whether they're together or not. ❤
I had 4 friends during my 70s child hood and the airing of this show Unfortunately, none of us , had at home fathers. The home without James, resembled all that I related to, back then.
I feel the same way. Instead of using James' hard work and apparent good fortune in this episode to lift the family out of poverty. They ended up killing him off the show!! My own Father was very similar to James Evens. Even his first name was James! Lol... But his hard work gave us a very good life! Other family members would come live with us in hard times! And we kids never wanted for nothing.
I agree, but unfortunately John Amos did not like the direction the show was going in. Good Times was originally supposed to be about Florida and James raising their family in a poor neighborhood, but JJ became the popular character and the show started to focus more on JJ. Every episode JJ would be constantly saying his jokes and "Dynomite," that the show's ratings started to go down. Because of Amos not agreeing to this direction, they fired him.
@@imranchoudhary4716 Were the ratings really going down? My impression was that JJ's popularity had them soaring, and that they started going down after James was written out of the series.
@@nassauguy48 Ratings started to go down sometime during the fifth season. Esther Rolle left after the fourth season because, like John Amos, she was unsatisfied with the direction the show was going. When they offered Rolle to come back for the final season, but even after meeting her demands, ratings still continued to decline and the series was canceled after the final season
@@tatirahglenn9096 I heard that Esther Rolle was a bit high maintenance to work with. She was reportedly not all that sorry to see John Amos go because his character was more popular than hers. She certainly felt the same way about Jimmie Walker, which is why she left the show for a time. After realizing that she could not find work elsewhere, she crawled back to Norman Lear. What really stank was that Ja'net DuBois, who had been promoted to the lead cast member (along with Walker) while Rolle was gone, was relegated back to a supporting star when Rolle came back.
Why didn't he take the test before he turned 42 ? The writers of this show were all over the place. Fred Davis is a politician one episode, then he's a cousin of the family.
Florida wasn't too thrilled about James leaving to Alaska for a great job great pay talking about $500 dollars she needs to really think twice about that another thing she doesn't want her three children being without a father for a year
@@RichV20 Yeah, quite frankly, I would rather go to Alaska. And, my God, it is certainly better than the Chicago ghetto. (Strange how she called Alaska a "God forsaken place" when she was living in Dante's Ninth Circle of Hell.
@@nassauguy48 James was going to make $25k ($80k in 2020) for a year in Alaska. Did Florida think they were going to continue living in the projects with the gangs the whole time? James could wire the money and they could move to an apartment in a safer neighborhood. Florida was worried about the kids being without a father for a year. Well now they are without a father for the rest of their life bc he went looking for work in the South.
James didn't go to Alaska because he was still considered an essential part of the show. Florida 'allowed' him to go to MS because the writers were killing him off. Stop blaming Florida

That was just her character. Her boyfriend (Moses Gunn) after James called her "too perfect," like the time they went out to dinner and ordered steak, and the waiter would not serve their food. When the man became angry, Flo stated, with a smile, "that's alright. I wasn't that hungry." LOL! He corrected her "nicety" and the waiter's rudeness at the same time.
