HOW TO DO A BLEACH WASH SOAP CAP! Color balance shampoo cap for hair explained.

  • If you're wanting to go a couple shades lighter this video is for you. Doing a shampoo cap/bleach wash/color balancer- whatever you want to call it- can help to pull out previously dyed hair so that you can get a lighter look using either a toner or other hair color. I went pretty aggressive with my mannequin head, Susan, because Manniquin hair is incredibly stubborn. I would recommend using a lower volume on a real person's hair and DEFINITELY don't do 3 back to back shampoo bleach baths as I did in this video. Chemical haircuts are real- always proceed with caution! If you only need a tiny bit of lifting check out the video below this- about how to fix hair color that has gone wrong!
    If you're new here, WELCOME!!! I'm Rae- I am a professional hairstylist so a lot of my content is hair/beauty related! Additionally, I do a weekly whimsical Wednesday video that is more in the lifestyle category and is whatever fun uplifting subject that my heart desires. I hope you enjoy the video! Let me know either way so that I can make sure to put out future videos based on your enjoyment! Thanks For Watching!

    This is the best bleach bath video. Your explanation and demo is really great. I've watched it thrice now. Lol Going to bleach wash some dark dye off my hair so that I can color it light brown. Not looking for too much lift and not interested in doing regular bleach lightening. This seems perfect.

    I had a client yesterday who brought her hairdressers formulation for her hair from home. I toned her with a demi on the formula and it made it all a level 8 all over when I knew better because she's more like a level 10 /11 bleached blonde and toned. I only let it sit 10 minutes so I'm going to do a shampoo bleach cap and hopefully it will just lift the demi put on thanks for the info

    I have 3N demi perm over grey/white hair and it does NOT wash out. I want to go natural and remove all the 3N. Can you recommend what # developer, time to leave in, how many repeats are usually safe and if a deep conditioning in between is necessary.

      My thoughts: Going from very dark color-treated hair to natural grey/white can be very challenging, especially if you had that 3n applied more than one time. You will more than likely need several rounds of bleach and toner because to get that 3n out you are going to have to get through red, orange, yellow then pale yellow. I am going to add this as a topic for a future video because there is so much to take into account on the subject. What did you end up doing and how did it turn out?
      Thanks for watching!

    Can you use conditioner instead of shampoo? Also, how long do you leave this on for? I’ve been bleaching my roots for a while so now it’s been a year or so and my ends are pretty brassy compared to the top...

    • @TheReelRae
      @TheReelRae  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly in your situation what I would probably do is when you go to rinse your freshly bleached roots add enough water to kind of lather the bleach from the roots down thru the ends- just for a few minutes- watch what the color is doing and see how it’s feeling. If you’ve already done the roots and are just wanting to freshen up the ends then I would do a low volume and shampoo- save the conditioner for after- but if you decide to try the conditioner out let me know how it works for you. Timing is the same- you just need to watch the color and pay attention to how your hair is feeling. Another solution might be to just tone the ends. Let me know what you decide to do, how it works out, and if you have anymore questions! I hope this helps!

    Hello :) My question is: I applied a light ash blonde with 30 vol last night. Roots look good, lower half that has multiple shades eq black applications isn't lifting. I did a soap cap strand test with bleach, 30 vol, shampoo and coconut oil. Matches perfectly to roots and feels healthy. I'm wondering how long after the color I applied last night I should wait to soap cap all over. I don't want to get crazy and damage my hair. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and answering questions!!!

    I have dark brown hair and I started turning gray 3 years ago. I started dying my hair with box dye. I haven't put box dye on my hair in 3 months and I want to do a bleach bath. I have at least two inches of gray hair at the roots. My question is should I just put the bleach bath on all my hair or should I just put it on the ends first? Also, is 3 months of not dying my hair and putting deep conditioning treatments on it playing safe before bleach bath ?

    • @TheReelRae
      @TheReelRae  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This should work well for that because as long as you aren't doing a pastel the hair does not have to be super light. Keep in mind that the color you lift to will affect how the fashion color looks when you out it on top. Example- If it's orange your pink may come out more rose gold or the purple may looks more pink(esh). Let me know how you hair turns out! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I have colored my hair with 20 gr 4N + 15 gr 5A with 10 vol all over. Before that the ends have always been dyed with the exact same colour except I used 1.9% developer. My question is how light can I get my hair by using a bleach bath? Preferably I want to reach a level 7 and put a 7.11 or 7.01 on it, so a cool tone

    • @TheReelRae
      @TheReelRae  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Marit! Sorry for this very delayed response still struggling to find the balance between salon work, home life, and youtube. My intention going forward is to be able to check daily for comments! I can't give you a specific amount of lift you will achieve with a bleach bath because everyone's hair lifts differently. I would not try to achieve more than about 2 levels of lift with the shampoo cap technique. You might be better off applying bleach/developer all over on dry hair. Regardless of the bleaching technique that you decide on it will NOT lift to a cool color, especially at a level 7/8. So you will want to tone it after lifting. Remember the color wheel- Blue tones out orange, violet for yellow, green for red. I will link my full playlist for DIY Color below along with the video on applying bleach to dry hair. Let me know how it turned out, and if you have any more questions! Again, so sorry for the delayed response. Thank you for watching, commenting, and supporting my channel!

    Thank you!!!!! How often can I do this? I’d like to use this method to gradually lift my lengths and roots as they grow out. I’m a natural light brown (level 7?) and got my hair to an orange 8ish, then ‘toned’ with Demi permanent color. There’s no permanent color in my hair. Can I do this when my roots grow out to lighten everything (I plan to use Demi permanent to do a shadow root)? I don’t know if I should leave the roots out for a few minutes so they don’t get hot, or just saturate everything.

    • @TheReelRae
      @TheReelRae  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mandy7982 I would just do it as needed then- Maybe one every4-6 weeks if you want to go slow and steady. You can do it more frequently if it's feeling good. Just pay attention to how your hair is feeling and looking heath-wise. :) Also don't forget the power of purple or blue-tinted shampoo/conditioner to help combat warm tones.

    • @mandy7982
      @mandy7982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheReelRae that sounds great! Should I start with the ends and process the roots for a shorter amount of time so they aren’t ‘hot,’ or just saturate everything at once?

    • @TheReelRae
      @TheReelRae  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mandy7982 so this technique is meant to be quick and easy- for that reason I would say to just do it all at once. You will want to get it on as quickly as possible. If you want to do an all over bleach application on dry hair I find it much easier to do a lower volume on the roots then bump the volume up a little for the ends. Applying to ends before the roots ends in a tangle mess- at least for me anyway! Don’t forget to pay attention to how your hair is feeling health wise! 💖

    My daughters hair was dyed to a 4n using Demi permanent with the firefight of it fading over time. It hasn’t faded at all and she wants it to be a medium chocolate brown. Do you think a soap cap is a good idea for this? I’m only concerned about getting an even lift since there is color on her mids and ends. It was colored about 3 months ago. I did lighten in foils a couple of weeks prior to that but she decided she wanted to go back dark. So there’s the back story lol! Also I figure I’ll have to tone but really need to see what level she lifts to first.

      I'M SO SORRY about the very delayed response! It has been a super busy couple of weeks for me- I generally try to respond much faster! Her hair probably super soaked up that 4n since those pieces were pre-lightened a thirsty! I think the easiest way to lift it up, if it's just mids to ends and only needs to come up a couple levels, is to apply on dry hair with a 10vol. That way you can be intentional about where it's going. Then when you apply the medium brown I would choose a shade a little lighter than your actual goal in case those ends super soak up the color. I hope this helps! Let me know how her hair project is coming along, again I am so sorry for the delayed response! Thank you for watching!

    Hi! :) my whole head was a level 8-9 till around feb this year and we decided to go for a bright copper in the salon, they filled my hair with a brown (apparently because they didn't want the copper to fade quickly) then put the copper over it, the color came out as a dark brown because the filler just stuck to my hair :( I never actually ended up with the copper color I wanted as my hair ended up stuck dark brown, I decided to give up on it - because my hair was already pretty damaged and I just wanted my light hair back but I knew that wasn't gonna happen. My hair at the moment from where the beached parts were (the parts they coloured over) is like a light brown now, a level 6?? and a few inches of a level 4 (regrowth).. Im wanting to try bleach washing to get it all lighter gradually over a few applications over a period of time to maintain integrity. What is your recommendation on the most effective technique on applying the bleach wash to the different tones of my hair to achieve all over lightness & consistency in color?

      My thoughts: It is so sad that you never got to live your copper ginger dreams! My concern with the gradual/gentle options is that those level 4 roots are going to turn an icky brass. In this situation I would try a bleach wash on the ends (if they feel up to it) then apply a permanent color all over. In theory, you could use a level 8 and 40 vol- it is going to lift warm. So if you have given up on that ginger dream then you will want to make sure to get a very ashy color to counteract that. What did you end up doing and how did your hair turn out?!
      Thanks for watching!

      Hey Dawn! So sorry for the delayed response! I should be quick to respond going forward. I am incorporating youtube response time into my daily schedule! it really depends on how much you're trying to lift up to prepare your hair for the purple- It might be better to do an all-over bleach application on dry hair. That REALLY depends on how much you are needing to lift tho. Another option depending again on the end goal and your starting place is to just leave the roots alone and do no bleach which could give you a deeper shade on your roots- kind of like a shadow root. My thoughts: Although this is a diluted version of bleach please remember that you are still using bleach. The answer depends on how dark your hair is, this method is only going to give you a little lift. Since it's applied all over it will also lift those previously highlighted pieces as well, and then you will have to reapply the permanent color. What did you end up doing and how did it turn out?

    I am wanting to remove a dark violet color from hair that was previously colored a preferred cinnamon color. I mistakenly used the violet color to cover her new growth and then bring it to the ends for the last 10 minutes but violet was the wrong color for the new growth. It should have been the cinnamon. 🥴
    I have given her a shampoo cap application on her last visit and will reapply another shampoo cap at her next visit 3 weeks from now until all of the violet is removed avoiding the roots which can be difficult - avoiding the roots that is. Please advise if I'm on the right track to getting back to the color that I prefer - cinnamon.

    • @TheReelRae
      @TheReelRae  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My first thought is to be patient with your hair. Removing all that color is a journey that typically takes a few rounds. Make sure to pay attention to how your hair is feeling as you are working towards your blonde goal. Toners and tinted shampoo/conditioner can help reduce some of the unwanted colors on the way. It does sound like a bleach bath would help to remove some more of that warm color. Also make sure to do a nice deep condition after each process. Thanks for watching! Let me know how it turns out and if you have anymore questions!

    I have a literal hair disaster going on. I went to a salon to get dark blue. I had previously self done red. The stylist lifted just a bit of the red from my hair then put blue over it. I was happy but I eventually couldn’t have blue hair anymore. So I went to a salon to get the blue out (at this point it faded to greenish blue already). I told them I just don’t want black hair but I want to go to a brownish color that I can slowly lighten over time. She put a permanent black dye over top of my hair without stripping any of that fashion color out. I complained to her and the owner so she “put a toner” over my hair that was level 1 it was a warm colored toner so my hair was black with a tinted red feel to it. Since then I’ve had a different stylist slowly using color remover/color oops (not bleach) and my hair is a weird brownish green now. Probably a level 4 or 5 now and I just want this fashion color out of my hair so I can have hair that’s one color again before my wedding next year. I dyed my hair blue in June of 2020. So I have about 6 inches of regrowth that is virgin. Should I just do a bleach bath over my mids and ends? Cause I’m really considering going back to red. Before this journey I always did my own hair and I’ve had more problems since I started going to salons. I’m so frustrated please help.

      @@nicolette889 What color is your natural? Without seeing your hair my current thoughts are that using red as you mentioned is a GREAT idea. With the color wheel, we know that red cancels green. It might even be worth trying a color depositing shampoo/conditioner. I like this KERACOLOR brand that I will add a link for. The beauty of this option is that it's not going to be damaging, hopefully, it cancels out the green but if it gets weird it will fade quickly. Assuming this works, give it a couple weeks to make sure the green is gone. Then it should be easier to get a nice even color. I would put the keracolor on your hair dry and avoid new growth.

    I am now grey all over and since lockdown I did not colour my hair due to a breakout of dermatitis from a FAKE shampoo I bought from amazon UK. I usually used a medium blond but I do half a tube of colour to a bottle of developer because the colour is too dark otherwise ( this is box colour by Schwarzkopf - Colour Expert Medium Blond 8.0 which has Omegaplex and Hyaluronic acid in the formula. I now have regrowth about 4 inches and I tried a colour remover about 6 weeks ago but it did not do anything even though my hair is very cores and puros and lifts quickly when colouring it. I wanted to do a bleach wash but I am worried I might have a flare up of the dermatitis. So I decided to buy a color 10 - 2 light cool blond with 3 levels of lift, I will patch test first and hopefully it will be OK. I would do an all-over application on dry hair. Keep in mind that your roots will lift faster than the rest because of the heat coming from your scalp. So you will either want to use a lower volume on roots to about an inch out, then use a higher volume on the remainder. OR you can also apply the same volume all over if you apply to mid to ends first then go back and apply roots to about that one-inch mark. It does not need developer and is conditioner based so no worries about damage! Apply to clean, dry hair in small sections making sure to saturate thoroughly. Process at least 30min but it can sit for however long, as it is conditioner based. When you rinse, don't shampoo just rinse with cool water until the water runs clear.
      ** When you say bleach blonde are we talking like white blonde, or is there some yellow or orange still in the mix? If it has some yellow or orange you will just want to go darker to cover. Fashion color is like a stain, so if your hair isn't light enough for the shade you apply then it wont show up.
      *As always with my advise, when is doubt do a test strand!
      I hope that helps. Keep me posted!

      More white than yellow but this is not freshly bleached, so my roots are showing. The pink on 80% of my hair has seemed to wash out almost perfectly whereas it still picks up on the rest. Which is why my hairdresser was curious about a bleach cap, but I was worried about doing too much bleaching (if that makes sense).

      @@miaricamara6221 My advice without seeing your hair would be to start with this method- that does not use any developer- then if that's not enough then do the full-blown bleach wash. You will probably want to use something to even out the color after that. Since your hair turned out SO dark the first time your hair is probably very porous. So if you decide to add a new brown after the black color lifts up I would use a demi-permanent- and use a color that is at least one level lighter than your goal. You can also try using a brunette color-enhancing shampoo/conditioner to be safe! Let me know how it goes and if you have any more questions!!

    I bleached my hair to a yellow blonde, put Ion Brights semi-permanent magenta in it for 25mins... the whole top of my head is bright pink, but the back and sides are splotchy, even though I fully coated my head... how can I fix this?

New content is coming soon, and I will do my absolute best to reply more promptly going forward. I am going to guess that you have already resolved this issue.
      My thoughts: I would probably try doing another application of the magenta and see if that solves it. It could be that those spots just did not get as light as the top parts of your head when you bleached them. It's hard to say without seeing it. What did you end up doing and how did it turn out?!

      Hey Sherry! So sorry for the delayed response! I should be quick to respond going forward. I am incorporating youtube response time into my daily schedule! This will work on any level of hair in that it will help pull up a little color. It depends on what your actual goal is to determine if it is the best technique to use. I have 26" of hair, I plan on doing a bleach wash cause the bottom half is temp red dye an the other half is virgin (dirty blond) I love the dark root compared to the fire red, so I plan on doing this but ombre. So I plan on using 3 different developers or time it differently for each section

    • @TheReelRae
      @TheReelRae  3 ปีที่แล้ว
