Size differences between gears is a factor,.One to one is the best for towing because they are the same size. 430 gears exacerbate the gear size differences to the internal gears of the transmission. Thus, 355s ,one to one is much stronger and less stressful than 4.30s in an overdrive gear.Remember,Nascar runs one to one ratios at top speed because of this. When they break a gear it's never 4th .
@@HereWyoming terrain is a big factor. But dropping on gear in a 10 Speed with the 3:73 yields equivalent or better final drive ratios than one gear higher running a 4:30. As long as you’re working within the trucks tow ratings you’re good to go. Thanks for watching.

We're pulling 11,300 5er heading to AZ. The test will be heading north on I-35 from Phoenix to Flagstaff. I'll try to come back with mileage nmbrs. Keep that snow up in Michigan.
I have a 2020 F350 7.3L with the 3.73 rear and I tow a travel trailer that's 10,000lb 5th wheel and it has no problem pulling it even in the mountains. I do lock it out of 10th gear because it does shift a lot even on flat ground. I average 9.5mpg mostly and 7.5-8mpg depending on how much mountain terrain I'm in.
I selected the 4:30 gearing on our 2022 F350 as insurance against "change". We currently tow a 12,000 lb. 5th wheel and 3:73's would have been sufficient. But we're retired now and don't ever want to have to purchase a different tow vehicle. Someday we may want to step up to a larger/heavier trailer and didn't want gearing to be the limiting factor. Also, our pickup is only used as a work horse, never for commuting, that's what cars are made for😋
@hyracer6684 Yes sir, completely understand and agree, and I would have gone 4:30 for sure if I was doing nothing but working the truck. I've got almost 30k miles on the truck and change the oil every 5k miles and use valvoline full synthetic oil. I ordered the 3.73 gears over the 4.30 because I figured I wasn't going to be towing max weight ever and wanted to gain some mpg as well. Empty I get 13-15 city, 16-18 highway and 9-10 towing my tractor.

Oh ya, I added dual exhaust from cat back and I have a 5 Star tune which I just keep in the 87-octane heavy tow tune. This helps with a lil more power and really helps the tranny rail pressures and adjusts the Speedo for the larger tires.
@@grahamkearnon6682 Assuming you are questioning the comment I made about the Tremor and the 35’s. The larger tires take away from the 4:30’s a little bit and you end up running a few less RPM’s than a truck with smaller tires. This is why off road rigs running 37 - 40 inch tires end up needing even lower gears to offset the loss of torque to the ground that occurs when the larger tires are installed. I hope that helps. @keithkrueger5352 Torque convertors today can partially lock at different percentages.
