L8T owner with the 6L90. All gm new gassers have 3.73 and it does fine for my specific application. It’s also a daily driver so the 3.73s win for me. On top of that, it’s a 6 speed and I pull a 5er. It does fine up and down climbs, I just lock gears out.
@@slaytanic921 Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!
4:10 ?
@@grahamkearnon6682 Assuming you are questioning the comment I made about the Tremor and the 35’s. The larger tires take away from the 4:30’s a little bit and you end up running a few less RPM’s than a truck with smaller tires. This is why off road rigs running 37 - 40 inch tires end up needing even lower gears to offset the loss of torque to the ground that occurs when the larger tires are installed. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Size differences between gears is a factor,.One to one is the best for towing because they are the same size. 430 gears exacerbate the gear size differences to the internal gears of the transmission. Thus, 355s ,one to one is much stronger and less stressful than 4.30s in an overdrive gear.Remember,Nascar runs one to one ratios at top speed because of this. When they break a gear it's never 4th .
@@lesterpittenger5992 bingo! Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Pulling on flat highways is one thing, pulling in mountains at elevation is a whole different story. I had a 6.8v10 with 4:10 and wished I had 4:30.
@@HereWyoming terrain is a big factor. But dropping on gear in a 10 Speed with the 3:73 yields equivalent or better final drive ratios than one gear higher running a 4:30. As long as you’re working within the trucks tow ratings you’re good to go. Thanks for watching.
Having the 4.30 does not make your engine stronger… with the 10 speeds of today, the 3.73 truck will just ride a lower gear and have the same RPM and horsepower up the hill
Why does the video title say you can't pull with a 7.3 and a 3.73:1? that's clickbait and that will keep guys like me from watching anymore of your videos.
@jeffclark4008 It's slightly intended as click bait but is more intended as a quote from so many that have told me my truck isn't good enough to be towing a 5th wheel because I only have a 3:73. Thanks for your comment!
You can't just say "pulling a 10,000lb trailer will… . XYZ" there are different trailer configurations. If you're pulling a 10k 5th wheel, your truck is going to work much harder than a truck that is pulling a flatbed trailer with a skid steer on it. Your gasser would probably hang out in 9th and 10th gear no problem with a flatbed trailer behind the truck.
@jeffclark4008 Yeah, that's debatable too, I pull more than the 5th wheel and there are lots of variables for sure. I've noticed even my flat deck landscape with a side by side or zero turn can have me hanging in 8th and not hitting 9th and 10th. Depends on terrain, speed and head wind. Lots of variables for sure. Thanks for watching!
@@robertweller2662 That's odd, because every video I have seen, like from TFL truck, shows different. They were impressed with how long they stay in 10th gear even while climbing. I don't recall how heavy the trailers were. I know JB Reviews did one with his 20' box trailer with a car inside it out in Utah and it stayed in 10th gear for some of the uphill climbs.
@@jeffclark4008 I haven’t made any really long pulls on the express way with the landscape but the big ramp on the back does creat a bit of air drag. And the area I’m in isn’t completely flat ground either. Like I said, lots of variables. Like I said, I’m not against those 4:30’s I’m just against the people who have them telling those with 3:55 or 3:73’s that their trucks are inferior. There was one fella I talked to that was ready to swap his axles to get the 4:30’s in order to pull his 11k travel trailer 5 times a year because some 4:30 guy had him convinced he wasn’t going to like pulling with his 3:55’s. Poor guy was all nervous for no reason. Lol
@jeffclark4008 were the videos you saw on TFL with the Blue truck? That one had the 4:30 and 7.3 Godzilla Their tan colored truck was a 3:55 with the 7.3 Godzilla which the called Super Tremor. That truck also had a 5 star tune in it.
@@robertweller2662 Oh that's crazy. I have an F450 with the 4.30's and it's great while pulling my 23,000lb toy hauler, but it is definitely not needed for pulling an 11k trailer. I run a construction business, we have three 2021 F350 long bed crew cabs with the 7.3 and they all pull 20' box trailers loaded down, they are in Michigan, so there aren't any hills, but those trucks, with the 3.73 gears, pull those trailers so easily. There is no reason to get 4.30's, unless you are pulling extreme weights.
I selected the 4:30 gearing on our 2022 F350 as insurance against "change". We currently tow a 12,000 lb. 5th wheel and 3:73's would have been sufficient. But we're retired now and don't ever want to have to purchase a different tow vehicle. Someday we may want to step up to a larger/heavier trailer and didn't want gearing to be the limiting factor. Also, our pickup is only used as a work horse, never for commuting, that's what cars are made for😋
@hyracer6684 Yes sir, completely understand and agree, and I would have gone 4:30 for sure if I was doing nothing but working the truck. However, at this stage in my life, we are weekend warriors and do not need anything more than the 3:73. 4:30's are great if you're only working the truck. Thanks for watching!
F250 2021 7.3 with 4:30 towing10k TT loaded…cruise at 65mph in 10th all day. As a daily driver I get 12mpg in the truck. Not a good daily driver. That why I drive a Honda to work.
@@amop33 you’ve got enough gear to pull almost twice that weight if you need to. Thanks for watching!
I have 430s. They work great, but I ordered it. If buying used. Buy what you can get. Remember when you get 430 in a f250. Your axle goes up to a larger ring gear. And goes from a Sterling to a dana.
@@joelstanley1920 correct, the 4:30 is only in the M275, at least in the 20-22 trucks, not sure what’s in the 23-25 trucks now. Thanks for watching!
These transmissions are designed to pull in OD ,that trans will pull 35000 lb trailer all day in 10 th. Towing in overdrive is nothing, these are HD truck transmissions, the same trans in the 7.3 is used in the HO 6.7 w 1200 ft lbs of torque towing in 10 th w 4.30 s in an f450 pickup. Comparing these Hd 400 plus lb truck units to the first weak OD automatics in half tons from the 80s and 90s is comical. Those units were garbage and behind 150 hp engines that constantly shifted to maintain speed between 2nd 3 rd and OD. 4.30s is easier on the transmission ,driveshaft ,tcase, and u joints. It’s just easier to get the trailer and truck moving with them. You transfer the same torque to the rear tires needing less torque on the driveshaft, and everything in front of it.Thinking your going to get better fuel mileage in a 4x4 brick super duty from lower rpm’s isn’t quite the gain ppl think ,since the brick shape takes most of the hp to push thru the air ,as you go faster than 60 mph mpg falls off a cliff due to aerodynamics. Plz stop sharing information for 700r4s,and AOD transmissions with people looking to buy a new 10 speed,it’s not relevant and someone may actually believe you.
@@JohnDiMartino I clearly stated the fact that we didn’t tow in overdrive in the 80’s and 90’s for different reasons. I also stated that the 10 speed will pull in overdrive with the 4:30. I also clearly stated pulling in 7th puts less stress on the trans than pulling in tenth. I never actually flat out said the 4:30 puts more stress on the transmission than a 3:73. I compared pulling in 10th with the 4:30 to pulling in 7th with the 3:73. I’m guessing you blew your top and started typing before you watched the entire video. But hey, thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I have a 2020 with a Carli 3" level and 37's. I have 3:55's and that's what they offered that first year. I pull 13-17k and the truck does fine, no issues. Love the truck so much I'm not ready to get another until they come out with 4k rebates and low financing. Oh ya, I added dual exhaust from cat back and I have a 5 Star tune which I just keep in the 87-octane heavy tow tune. This helps with a lil more power and really helps the tranny rail pressures and adjusts the Speedo for the larger tires.

It’s worth specifying you’re buying gas trucks instead of diesel.
@shakygt You are absolutely right and I can’t believe I forgot to do that. I usually start off with the year of my truck and the Engine. This video was pretty spontaneous. I added the info to the video title and to the thumb nail. Thanks for watching and for pointing that out!
Tow Haul dry takes my 2024 F250 down to 8th when not is cruise, in cruise moves to 9th. Diesel with 3.31 in this truck and my old F350 and F250. Current retirement rig is 10 k lb 33 ft Travel Trailer with Tongue Weight at 1200 lbs. I pulled 18k Fifth Wheel with F 350 in the past. I would not have a 4.30 in any truck. My towing in Ontario Canada is 95% is 2 lane roads seldom on North Americas busiest highway. The max tow was always 3.31 in any order chart ford provides.
@brianclemens2707 The standard gear for a 6.7 diesel is the 3:31. That is interesting about your running tow haul dry and it locks out 9th and 10th when not in cruise. Thanks for watching!
Pretty sure my 2021 F350 Tremor diesel has the 3:55. Planning on pulling an 11k pound 5th wheel this year. Hopefully I'm all set below you 3:73 guys.
@chamberb01 Your diesel makes torque at a lower RPM and the stock gear in a non Tremor with the 6.7 is a 3:31. You won’t have any trouble at all. The 3:73 is not an option for the 6.7 Power Stroke. Thanks for watching.
@@robertweller2662 Thanks for the response!
I have a 2023 F350 7.3 Gas with 373 gears, we went from Wisconsin to Yellowstone last summer, I use tow/haul mode, the trans shifts into 10 gear sometimes but mostly 7,8,9, I used manual mode in the mountains, up and down, trans temp never got above 220, Do you know at what RPM my torque convertor locks ut at? I called Ford and they couldn't tell me.
@keithkrueger5352 Torque convertors today can partially lock at different percentages. When using tow haul mode, they are supposed to lock up 100 % but I am not certain when that happens in these new ten speeds. I know my previous truck a 2004 Dodge Ram with the Cummins had a 4 speed and it locked in 4th gear, you could actually feel it and made a lot of people think it was a 5 speed transmission. I wish I had an answer for ya. The best I can tell you is is locks at a fairly low speed usually around 18-23 MPH if the data I found is accurate. Thanks for watching!
@@robertweller2662 Thanks
I ordered my '23 f350 7.3 with 3.73 and pull a 20 ft equipment trailer with my tractor and other stuff so not a whole lot of weight. Between 8k to 10k lbs total but it does really well no issues. I've got almost 30k miles on the truck and change the oil every 5k miles and use valvoline full synthetic oil. I ordered the 3.73 gears over the 4.30 because I figured I wasn't going to be towing max weight ever and wanted to gain some mpg as well. Empty I get 13-15 city, 16-18 highway and 9-10 towing my tractor.
@kargmeister Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. Sounds like you made a good choice on you set up!
We have the 3.73 in our '24 F250 7.3 gasser. We just went from Dallas to Flagstaff pulling a 13k 5th wheel. Serious head winds most of the way across Texas and NM. 6.8 average for milage but pulled the trailer without a problem even up grades into 30+ mph head wind.
@danlsmock Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I was set on the 430. After watching you & two others, I felt comfortable with 373. Got mine early Dec and managed to get 1,600 break in miles before we left home. We're pulling 11,300 5er heading to AZ. The test will be heading north on I-35 from Phoenix to Flagstaff. I'll try to come back with mileage nmbrs. Keep that snow up in Michigan.
@TraconWizard Thanks for watching and safe travels!
I have a 2020 F350 7.3L with the 3.73 rear and I tow a travel trailer that's 10,000lb 5th wheel and it has no problem pulling it even in the mountains. I do lock it out of 10th gear because it does shift a lot even on flat ground. I average 9.5mpg mostly and 7.5-8mpg depending on how much mountain terrain I'm in.
Good lord, you can do all of that, or get a 6 speed put it in drive and go. Stay away from the 10 speed. 19:49
@@CLin-f1m I think if we were given the choice of the 6 speed or the 10 speed, hands down we would all buy the 6 speed. However that is not an option for those buying a new truck at least not in any trim above a work truck. I don’t disagree with your statement but unfortunately there are not enough used trucks for sale to fill everyone’s needs and when buying new, you get what they offer so your suggestion is far from a practical one. @@tiktok8600 Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I’ve got more content on the channel about the truck and plan to make more this year when we get to towing again. I see so many questions on forums and Facebook but it seems like few people are actually answer the questions so I wanted to put this one out there. We learned a ton going thru the process of researching and buying this truck. I drive through Grand ledge several times a month.
Theyre junk
Also… don't forget that RV's (towable hitch weight and 5th wheel pin weight) listed on the RV's Web sites DO NOT include propane, batteries, food, clothings and all other stuff in the RV. Propane and batteries will be about 150 pounds more to be added to the advertised hitch weight of the RV. Ask me why I known… I lost 30k$ having to switch (10 months after purchase the F150) from a F150 to a F250 in order to be legal on the payload for towing a newly bought travel trailer. Don't rely on the truck dealer, nor on the RV dealer telling you that your truck is fine. Do your own research and number calculations. Payload will always be the limiting factor, not the weight that the truck can pull. With the F150 Lariat, with my numbers, I busted the 1498 pounds max payload my version of F150 that I had. With the F250 XLT (2996 max payload) I have 1500 pounds of spare payload that can take into account what ever we put in the RV. I am hopping to prevent some of you to do the same mistake I made. Also watch out with the 6.8 L motor in 2025. In 2024 standard gas engine for F250 is the 7.3L, in 2025 the standard gas engine is the 6.8L.
This is a great video!
Thanks for this video. Plan on getting the F350 regular cab DRW 7.3 loaded with truck bed camper around 4000 lbs and pulling a trailer with a side-by-side total weight another 4000 lbs full-time across the country. I would be going to the mountains as well. Do you think the 373s are enough gear or should I do the 430?
@@relentlessfpv1822 The 3:73 will handle that load but if you’re towing full time with. DWR and spending any time in the mountains, you will appreciate the 4:30 for sure.
@ thank you for your reply. I appreciate that. One more question if you don’t mind. Do you think the MPG will suffer a lot going to 430? I really only plan on going about 65 miles an hour most of the time.
@ I would expect MPG when towing to be the same if not a touch better with the 4:30 due to the extra torque multiplication. However, running empty and cruising down the highway 70mph you’ll be running a few more RPM’s which will use a little more fuel. If you look at the final drive ratios, running a 4:30 in 10th gear is like running a 3:73 somewhere between 8th and 9th gear , closer to 8th but not quite that low. I hope that makes sense.
@@robertweller2662 thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
@ no problem at all, enjoy that truck and subscribe to my channel, I will be making more towing content next summer.
They made it so you have to Pay 10times the labor than what the belt is worth.
My drive belt did the very same thing. It had a chunk out of it. At about 200 hours. Wonder how many other belts have built in “ lose a chunk”. Ought to last longer. Not easy task to change.
Thank you for saying you are an obstruction to traffic going 55-60. Towing out here in Utah, where the freeway speed limits are mostly 80mph, and there is no towing limit, doing less than even 70mph feels like you are an obstruction and people start doing stupid things. I try to tow at 70mph because thats what the 18 wheelers generally do and so I can tuck in with them. But people go bombing past me doing 80 mph towing their 5th wheel toyhaulers
Worth every penny!
What’s the Max factory hitch rating conventional of a 250 vs 350? If you have a conventional trailer dry rating of 12000 pounds… then add truck box cargo, hitch weight, and trailer cargo thats 1000 pounds, you need 1300 on the tongue. Thats a lot. What are the max tongue numbers of hitches? What’s available? Thanks
@@highpeaks6542 The max factory hitch rating will depend on your truck year and options but for most trucks 2022 and older Ford Super Duty the max hitch rating for conventional tow is 15,000 lbs. 10% of that being tongue weight would be a max tongue weight of 1500 lbs. That is a lot and is why it is important to run a good weight distribution hitch. The max tongue weight rating of the hitch will vary depending on what insert you are running. A good weight distribution hitch is going to meet or exceed the max tongue weight of your trailer. For conventional towing a larger travel trailer I highly recommend a sway elimination hitch like the PRO PRIDE. They are by far the best and offer the safest possible solution for towing a larger travel trailer. I have first hand experience with this and installed a PRO PRIDE on my father’s truck after he spent his first several trips with his tailer and truck white knuckling it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. That helped a lot.
Do you ever have the problem of 1st gear holding until it gets to over 1000rpms before it shifts? Mine does it all the time regardless of if I'm being easy on the throttle or taking off rapidly. Also if I am hard on the throttle it will not shift from 3rd to 4th or 5th without delaying the shift. The truck will actually slow down before the shift even though the engine is still speeding up.
@@atvtinker01 I don’t believe I have had either of those things happen to mine. It acts a little sluggish when it’s cold but most automatic transmissions do.
Get rid of it now. They're trash.
Just a heads up, Transfer Flow makes a 58 gallon tank for CCSB 7.3 gas models. Its pricey at around $3k but its 50 state legal and can potentially add a significant amount of range if you are driving through pricier areas.
Former Ford Auto Trans Tech: high idle exists because the truck needs to warm up. Once it’s warmed up properly, it idles down to operating idle. Regarding the trans lurch, it happens because people don’t realize that the weight of the vehicle is on the parking pawl of the transmission. Even a very slight incline will produce a lurch when all the weight is on that parking pawl. When parking, stop the truck, put on the parking brake, and then shift to park. When putting it back into gear, reverse that process. Problem solved.
@Vegasguy1975 correct, if you watch the video and listen, I stated that I shift to neutral and set the parking brake every time I park it.
Change of subject. Have you looked at a retractable tonneau? Roll-n-lock is one brand. It might give you better vis.
@Traconwizard I did look at them but I really liked the Bakflip so I decided to go that route. Also did not consider the visibility aspect of the hitch when I bought the cover.

Not a big difference on mpg from 3.73 to a 4.30 it’s like a .2 difference , example 3.73 gives you 13.7 mpg vs the 4.30 gives you 13.5 mpg not enough of a difference to say 3.73 better, 4.30 still a better option that’s why they come standard on the tremors super duty.
There really does need to be more people talking about how to actively drive an auto transmission while towing. Just adding a little more throttle before you get to a hill so cruise isn't reacting to speed lose helps alone, let alone downshifting. Basically all of the techniques that manual drivers where doing in diesels with less than 250hp.
@@PlaneSaddles I could not agree with you more. I drove manuals for a lot of years and towed with 3 gas trucks long before I owned my Dodge with the Cummins. Many people out there today have never driven a manual and it shows. Also, several people jumped on the diesel band wagon because it was cool and had never towed before in their life. Then they went out and bought trailers. Now some of those people are going back to gas and expecting it to tow like a diesel and it’s not going to. Gassers can tow just fine but you have to “Drive” them. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Good stuff!!
