"But, i would like to try" After three years of their relationship broken, Joel almost burst into tears of joy knowing Ellie is willing to forgive him.
Christian Villamil I thought it was 2 years from the present (she’s 19) that he told her in that flashback. Still hard to believe she cut him off for multiple years but it happens to fathers and daughters all the time in reality
Joe fucking doomed the whole human race of getting a cure, and beside that, he erased the value of ellie's life, of being unique, special. Instead he said she was useless, like the rest of the "imune guys" he mentioned. Joe was my favorite character, but you gotta now why abby had to follow her revenge, he killed her father.
@@gabrielrezendetrindade7307 I think that's misleading. That cure had little chances of sucess. The world is filled with zombies ,with few resources, everyone is fighting each other etc.And then you have to take that cure to every survivor in U.S.A and others parts of the world?? That would take more than a century. I think he made the right call for his life with abby but not exactly the right one for everyone. As for abby.....no one gives a single SH1T!! about her. nothing!!! she just sucks ass, that's the way it is.
Poor Joel. Probably cried countless nights waiting for Ellie to give him another chance. Him crying at the end there is every parent in that situation 100%
I feel like a lot of what drove Ellie on her revenge quest was straight up guilt. She felt guilty about not trying to forgive him sooner. She felt guilty about just straight up shutting Joel out when all Joel really wanted to do was be the father she never had. I honestly think Joel's death is one of the most tragic deaths in video game history. It just doesn't feel right in any way.
That's how Neo-Westerns are. Look at the deaths in Logan, or No Country, Hell or High Water. None of them are spectacular or deserving of the character. Most of the deaths are meant to serve a narrative purpose. To highlight injustice and challenge the audience to find justice themselves. That's why most of the messages of Neo-Westerns in my point of view is to give to tell the audience member to have hope for the future.
@@rabnabombshell I know he is. I'm not one of these people who's crying he didn't die a hero's death. On the contrary, I'd argue he wasn't deserving of a hero's death. What I meant by "It just doesn't feel right in any way" is that everything about his death just makes you feel uncomfortable.
Bro imagine if the story was about dina getting killed becuz joel was so stubborn and let her die and ellie didnt forgive joel and the story is about forgiveness and at the end ellie forgives joel and he dies a grateful death sacrificing himself to save ellie, or somethin like that it would have been better imo
@@michaelwashington2519 I hope Joel enjoyed his 4 years with Ellie. Even though he died, he got what he wished for. He saved Ellie and had the opportunity to become a proper dad again.
When Joel said he would do it all over again given the chance I bawled my eyes out. He didnt care whether Ellie hated him or not for it, he knew he made the right decision in his mind… this game is depression simulator…
She hated that Joel took that choice from her, a choice that was honestly not his to make. I still feel connected to Joel, but Joel's decision wasn't selfless, it was selfish. He didn't want to lose another daughter, that's why he lied to Ellie.
Once he said ”somehow the Lord” like the fact that he may slightly believe in the Lord messed me up. He believed he was given Ellie as a second chance to be a father. Ughhh I hate to admit that I was crying with that
Cyber_XIII I had a slightly different take on it. When Joel saved Ellie in the hospital it cost him nothing and cost her everything. At the time he did it because he didn't want to lose her. He did it for a selfish reason. Every time he lies to her about it for two years he was doing it for selfish reasons. He didn't want to lose her. When they have their final conversation however he is finally totally honest about it. By saying he would do it all again he is accepting the cost of his choice even if that cost is losing his most precious thing. His relationship with her, cause at that point, he thinks he has. This finally makes it a noble act rather than a selfish one. When Ellie says she wants to try and forgive him, Joel knows he hasn't lost her and she still loves him and that is why he nearly cries. While it is tragic for Ellie that they didn't get to do the full reconciliation, Joel died knowing he hadn't lost Ellie and that was all he wanted.
@Chonky Boah Do you understand that these scenes have nothing to do with the vaccine? that's not the point of Joel's choice or Ellies feeling towards him.
It's heartbreaking to see how Joel has imprinted on Ellie as almost like a reincarnation of his daughter. He just wants to be there for her and continue to be that father figure. The writers really fucked up with this one.
He only hoped to spare her pain and spare himself loss... "but such impulses can lead good parents to make terribly stupid decisions." -Mimir God of War
@@tallulah697 How she did not? Because her whole motivation was to get to the fireflies, because she lost everyone around her until Joel showed up and she wanted everything to stop no matter what, and Joel just didn't care about that and took the selfish choice without asking Ellie and straight up lying to her about it because he knows that's not what she wants anyway, do you even remember the game?
@@tallulah697 being something that "any father would do" doesn't turn it into something good. Also, Ellie is not Joel's daughter, Ellie is just the girl he knew that could fill up that loss he had many years ago, doing it without considering her feelings, still selfish.
That's all i wanted. One more day... So they can see a movie. She woke up and asked Jesse if Joel was up. She was going to ask him to watch a movie.. She told Dina it would be his choice of film.
@@SquallRealm That's the ENTIRE POINT... In Life do you get one more day with the ones you love if they die suddenly? NO, in real life, all death is cheap, it always comes as a surprise, and it immediately changes your life... It is thematic storytelling.. If they would have given Ellie that bond that extra day, she wouldn't have been filled with quite as much rage.. They took Joel; from her right as she was ready to spend time with him again, so she felt not only grief but robbed. If they would have given you more days with them and everything was all happy with them it wouldn't have been nearly as heartbreaking.
@@smellypatel5272 that’s the part that always gets me 😞 like it obviously breaks him that ellie is so resentful towards him but he’d rather she hate him alive than love him dead
@@smellypatel5272 that’s the heart of that scene. When Joel says he would do it all over again, it means that even knowing it would lead to Ellie hating him, him losing her and all of his suffering, he would still save her life. Even in this moment, he’s choosing the answer that will make her more angry because he loves her that much. Such a pure display of selfless love is what moves Ellie to finally begin forgiving him.
@Chris PaezI have a bit of a theory on this, so when ellie goes all emo on joel it turns out that around this time she is unable to "come out" to Joel (he isnt exactly the most versed with gay culture i guess and he is from the old world" maybe a part of her anger is towards her not wanting to know whether he would accept her after recommending jesse to her. She loves joel and wants to make him happy deep down anyway maybe that line about Dina is what she really needed to hear to make that forgiveness of Joel easier.
@@filoz2005 uhh no tf it doesnt sexualities of fictional characters shouldnt feel forced at all, and dina and ellie had a solid relationship. might as well say every straight character is heterosexual agenda forced in our faces
Man...Joel's voice actor, idk how he did it but damn the man got unbelievable talent did u hear them shaky breaths then the voice crack but trying to hold all of it together, that emotion beautifully captured.
He's great, but i think his talent shined the most when he was being tortured. I know that might raise some flags, but his painful grunts are almost TOO believable. Most people in video games and movies just keep yelling and screaming, but they never do all the moans and grunts that people (and animals) do when they're in severe pain. Yelling is exhausting and being in severe physical trauma is even more exhausting, it doesn't take long until you give up on screaming.
This is one of the reasons why I'm not buying the game they should have left it as it is. Now they made up some stupid story that the doctor is abby father. really???
@@theodoresherman5707 yes the 2 most badass zombie killers both put to rest, at least Lee died saving clem tho... Joel's death was dumb and I'm sure everyone watching this has heard that and thought that 😂
As a father, I think Joel knew Ellie didn’t meant for it to come out that way (when she yelled at him). Ellie was embarrassed, angry, and under pressure. She shouldn’t have done that obviously, but we all have our major slip ups. Joel probably knew she never meant to come off like that, but it did hurt him. He died knowing Ellie cared and loved him but to Ellie, she now lives with guilt and pain not ever being able to rebuild that part of their relationship. Really really sad the way it ended, depicts the sharp turns of life correctly though.
That's why, if you have problems with someone your close with, it's important to work them out immediately, as much as you can. I heard a story, of guy when he was 18, graduating from high school, he wanted a Ferrari, and mentioned it to his dad. His dad was a preacher, and the day of his graduation, instead of handing him the keys to that car, handed him a bible instead. The boy was so angry, he moved out, and cut his dad off. Decades later, he was now a father himself, and about the age his dad was the last time he saw the latter, and thought about getting back in touch, but before he could, he received a phone call his dad had died. When clearing out his dad's home, the son came across that same bible his dad offered him on his graduation day. When he opened it up, he found tucked inside was the keys to that car he had wanted all those years ago. When I heard that story, I could not imagine the pain and regret he felt, over letting something so trivial end his relationship with his father, who now he would never see again. And that's why I say, if you have a problem, and need to reconcile with someone, don't put off until tomorrow trying to fix it. Because sometimes tomorrow never comes.
"I would do it all over again" is Joel-speak for "I love you" 😭 "I don't think I could ever forgive you... but I would like to try." --- Joel was so happy hearing that he could barely contain himself 😢 This was a good goodbye.
@@SnuffySpaghetti I'm sorry but you being mad that joel was killed has nothing to do with what this scene is about. You need to take yourself out of the equation to see that.
I think at that moment of tragedy, Joel knew that Ellie still loves her as her father. I haven't played the game but it seems Joel is already beat at the start of Part 2, like all he wanted, all he lived for is for Ellie to forgive her. It's really sad: "I only live because -" ✌️
Well I guess that's something but he also died thinking his daughter is about to be murdered and there is nothing he can do it about so I don't think it matters much.
Also makes it sadder from the prospective of ellie wasted all those years being angry over something she couldn't change now her last real memory of them is her yelling at him for sticking up for her , imagine the guilt
Did Ellie just forget that she had been unconscious the whole time when Joel found the Fireflies? They didn't even give her a choice in the first place, and if the roles had been reversed she would've done the exact same thing that Joel did.
Exactly, the "surgeons" wanted to "perform the operation" as soon as possible and did not want to have any debate about it with Joel, even to the point of one surgeon putting up a knife to Joel's face. And yet apparently Joel's reaction isn't self defense in Neil Druckmann's eyes.
@@warzIbanez No matter how you look at it, what Joel did was selfish. Actually everyone was selfish, it was supposed to be Ellie's decision. This game confirms that Marlene was right though, that Ellie would've sacrificed herself.
@@fdlarts7676 It was selfish but it wouldn't of done anything. There would still be spores and it wouldn't work because fire flies would of needed to go around the world if it's worldwide. Plus there was no conformation they were skilled enough to actually get a cure from it.
Fadilla Achmad that’s the thing if the choice was given, allowed Joel would’ve allowed it, if Ellie made that decision he would be with her but the fireflies didn’t allow it they pushed Joel out so when Joel was faced with force he responded with force
Well Joel's decision was the wrong one. He did it for selfish reasons out of his fear of loss. He knows that Ellie would have willingly sacrificed her life just at the hope of a cure. That's why he lies to her about not being special.
@@PayondeAwsome He did it for selfish reasons but I still think he did the right thing. A vaccine would not save the world. Would a vaccine have prevented the war between WLF and the Scars? Faction wars kill more people than the infected do in both games. I've been so focused on Ellie when she says, "My life would've fucking mattered..." Concentrating on all of Joel's micro-reactions, he shakes his head after she says that. 3:42 He's on the defense here; if he were more verbose, I feel he would've shot back with, "Your life does matter. It matters to ME." But he's dealing with losing her, his guilt, and meeting her on adult level, so he's quiet, wounded, desperate. Like the scene in the farmhouse in the first game, I could watch these few minutes over and over and over and always feel, always get something new out of these performances.
Nah, he's smart. He doesn't say anything because Ellie is Ellie. She wasn't blaming him, she wasn't chastising him, she was explaining her own feelings. So what you do is you stay quiet, listen, and let her vent it all out. You don't interrupt and counter with "your life does matter" or "you don't know that" because that would have started an argument, and that wasn't the point. Saying anything along those lines would have been an attempt at justifying or excusing his own actions, but he doesn't need to do that. What he needs to do is explain his own feelings in response to her doing the same. And the explenation is "I did what I did because I had to do it. For me, there was no other option. I'm sorry I didn't give you what you wanted, but I simply couldn't. It was an impossible ask for me." That's all it boils down to. This is a conversation about emotions, not an argument about logic.

I don't know man they really did him dirty but in the flashbacks i still see Joel just that he is now more relaxed and happy because he has Ellie with him.
Crusard Modding yeah I know that. I guess he kinda did already say that when he said “if the lord gave me a chance to do it over, I would do it all again”
Steven72 I always thought it was so sad that Joel never said he loved Ellie and that Ellie never said she loved Joel but they did. "I would do it all over again." means "Ellie, I did for you, because I love you." Ellie starts to cry, because she suddenly feels important and finally understands why Joel did it. When Ellie says "But I would like to try" is the moment Joel recognizes that Ellie loves Joel too and forgives him. All Joel wanted is to be a loved father again, that's why he is crying because he finally made it. He finally has won the heart from Ellie. Despite Joel knowing that his lie broke their relationship for almost 3 years he still says " he will do it all over again " to save her. Ellie realised at that moment that he truly loves her and will do it again to save her. Only a Father would do that for his daughter and because he IS a father to Ellie after all this time he protected her and saved her from those Sick f**ks.
ellie’s character is so bad in this game. in the first she was funny and wholesome she was actually likable. But in this game she’s just a jerk and no ones likes her. this is bad writing

At the end of the game Ellie is able to forgive two unforgivable actions, Joel's lie and Abby's murder. That's why Ellie spares the life of Abby at the end of the game. The story isn't about revenge, the story is about forgiveness.
Angel Torres that is a really good way of putting it. Though the way they execute certain parts of the game can be very distracting. I’m not a big fan of the story but have tossed it aside to see the underlying messages and the story resembles forgiveness (obviously). However strong that message may be, it can’t make up for errors in the story. I’d give this game 6/10. Realistically that’s all it deserves. Actors did a fantastic job and even certain animators are due no hate for developing the game. The problem lies with Druckmann. He wants to create ‘experiences’. Even saying that it should not be as enjoyable as other games, but emotionally testing. He is a great director but I think this is his slip-up. Though I can’t hate him like some are doing because he directed the original Last Of Us, and many of the Uncharted games. He doesn’t deserve to be condemned but he needs to take some stick for this.
@@yanosneverloses1147 Nice to see someone's opinion without joking or insulting. I appreciate your point of view, but I still like the game. Thanks for sharing...
Angel Torres thanks for the reply. Game may be lacking but I enjoyed the experience to a certain degree. It may be slightly flawed story wise but is in no way a poor game. It doesn’t deserve the hate it gets.
The whole point of the first game was to question whether humanity was even worth saving over Ellie. The Joel I know, even if the events from the second game was canon, would NEVER go back on the decision. He's seen the worst of humanity for 20+ years, and he's been around the block long enough to know that a vaccine will only create another major power grab, rather than create lasting solution. If anything, Tommy's village was more of a hope for humanity than Ellie since it showed that a decent, peaceful life was possible. At the end of the day, chaotic people are the source of chaos, not necessarily the virus. Another comment I read said it the best: at the end of the game, Ellie still saw herself as nothing more than a cure. This to me is one of the major reasons why the sequel failed.
I really dont understand people who make this argument. If humamity isnt worth saving, why are you saving this little girl? Is she not human? Do you not want her to live a life amungst other humans? How does this make sense? If you think humanity isn't worth saving, fine. But be consistent and say "fuck it everyone deserves to die" instead of " everyone deserves to die except me and this little girl... and everyone in Jackson too I guess"
@@zomkiller200o Sure if that's how you want to play it, fine. You want to be an asshole to everyone except your group, fine. But then don't complain when other humans do bad things to you or do the same. Because in essence they are acting the same way you are, the only difference is, is that they have their own group they want to protect. And don't say things like fuck humanity, because clearly that's not what you mean. You want to use that logic, be consistent with it.
I would like to preface my comment by stating that I have never played TLOU nor watched any playthrough, and thus I'm only basing my opinions on common knowledge of the game's story. I don't think Joel's decision had anything to do with him weighing in on the worth of humanity, or whether or not Ellie's value would be misused by eventual human corruption with power. It was simply that he didn't want his daughter to die. After Sarah's death and connecting with Ellie he couldn't bear the idea of sitting idly by and letting someone he loved be killed, no matter the reason. If I were to assume Joel's emotional line of thought, it was to save Ellie, and just kinda hope that some day things might get better. And even if they didn't, they'd still have each other and she wouldn't be dead.
Joel loses Sarah = heartbroken Ellie comes into Joel's life = she slowly repairs a broken heart Ellie's Life in danger = fear he can't lose another daughter Ellie cuts ties with Joel = heart completely destoryed Ellie says she can't ever forgive him, but like to try = more pain and completely given up with living but doesn't regret the past nor would he change it Abby's 1st golf swing, without attempting to protect himself = welcome death as he has nothing worth fighting for. Ellie begs Joel to get up = Joel relives a moment form the past from when he was impaled Joel: "I struggled for a long time with survivin', and no matter what, you keep finding something to fight for" Without Ellie he had nothing worth fighting for and could no longer survive.
"Ellie says she can't ever forgive him, but like to try = more pain and completely given up with living" Nah, Joel never gave up. He may have been hurt that Ellie shut him out for a while, but he could at least carry on with the knowledge that she was alive and well. And when she said she'd was willing to try and forgive him, he was overjoyed. He could barely speak without losing it. Not only was she willing to welcome him back into her life, there would no longer be the lie he'd constructed between them and they could finally move on. The emotion conveyed between the two is simply fantastic and really sells that things were finally looking up for them.
Dude, he was crying tears of joy when Ellie told him that she wants to try to forgive him. They haven't said a thing to each other in 3 years (yes, that's the space between the cutscene where Ellie finds out and their last words) and that night, she comes around and finally tells him that she wants to forgive. He wasn't broken when he died, his hopes were raised after those words. You made it WAY more depressing than it really was.
This game would be soooo amazing if they just let Joel live for like 80-90% of the game, I only enjoy watching the flashbacks and the short time Joel is alive befor he get Mario Golfed.
Best mission in the game is Joel and ellie on her birthday visiting the museum. I fucking bawled my eyes out and I’m a grown man. Just shows that he truly was her father. They massacred my boy
A big chunk of the game should have been a "cat and mouse dynamic" where Joel got kidnapped by these people, having you hunt them down. They should have included Tommy on their journey to save Joel as well. After you find him, you play as Joel for the last time, and you valiantly save Ellie by sacrificing yourself to be killed by Abby (who orchestrated the kidnapping). Then the later half could be dedicated solely on revenge, instead of playing the entire game killing all of her friends, you just go after Abby. It would have been a better send off for Joel, and would have created a better sense of urgency that was more consistent than the original.
Jack Wyman she didn’t reciprocate though, so she paid a big price for that. Holding onto useless grudges for 2+ years... Ellie Ellie, could have given Joel much less shit for saving you life
Lewis what you are talking about should’ve been the story imo. Both of them developing there relationship to come to terms with the ending of part one. But hey?! Wanna play golf?
Abby was justified for wanting revenge, Joel was justified for saving Ellie, and Ellie was justified for being angry with Joel. But at the end of the day nobody wins.... it's tragic
As much as it sucked that Joel had to go on a killing spree on the Fireflies, there wasn't a moment where a choice was given to Ellie, or even a moment for her and Joel to say goodbye to each other. The fireflies just directly put Ellie on the table and were ready to kill her for a vaccine without giving her a moment to realize what's happening. So... From these people, Abby has the least amount of justification in my opinion. Yeah, they were going for a cure, but it wasn't through consent, it was just going to be a murder in order to save many others. Ellie "would have wanted this" but nobody really asked her or warned her before putting her on the table.
Abby was not justified. She crossed the country risking her friends lifes to revenge a guy who did what everyone would. Thats ressentiment and not seeing things clear for being blinded by rage and hate, a very low point in an human soul.
@@ivanrodriguez8659 She crossed the country to avenge her dad, same as Ellie. Someone kills your dad, let's see you stop to talk about resentment and being blinded by rage.
4:51 that moment... that exact second when joel's face change, his heart breaks and a couple of tears drop... that's the reason why I love so much this saga. They handle so good the emotional moments and watching joel like that is really hard as a father of two girls.
Joel knows he did the right thing - he's unshaken. Ellie doesn't share that same clarity and by the end of this....Sacrificed too much for nothing in return....
@Wackaz - Arthur Wacker she starts to forgive him and the chance is taken away which is why she is so focussed on revenge and literally loses everything including herself to find it "if I ever were to lose you id surely lose myself" .. by the end she realises this isn't what Joel would want for her and she finds peace. She lets go of the grief by letting abby go.
I love how Naughty Dog let you think for a short while that her their last exchange took place at the party. Some rough words came out of Ellie's mouth. It was nice to find out that she visited Joel later that evening and she "apologized"
I'm happy he got to see her fight for him. Especially afer the conversation they had the night before. Unfortunately, he probably thought she was in danger. So sad 💔
Well, Neil has completely destroyed Ellie’s character. What happened to the tough, yet hopeful and sweet girl in the first game? All she seems to be now is just a loud mouthed bad person who constantly hates everyone around her.
0:50 felt like a punch in the gut. Not only because of the hurt in Joel’s face but you just know Ellie’s going to be reeling in guilt over it 24 hours later. My heart breaks for both characters in that moment.
My favourite parts of this game were the Joel flashbacks - Just a man who has lost everything, finding joy raising his new daughter in an apocalypse. If the game was just that, perhaps with a heroic death for Joel at the end, I'd be more than satisfied.
It angers me so much that Joel and Ellie couldn’t at least have had some time together before killing him off. He as a character deserved so much more and so much hettef
@@jimmydcriket4086 Yeah, he isn't a good person. But a bad person doing something good deserves recognition or some redemption, right? Joel had his selfish reasons and ellie had the right to be mad but to become belligerently distant especially after everything they been through, knowing how he lost his daughter and her saying "everyone left me except for you!". Her anger leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Bad writing.
@@stone_chiu2247 To each its own, But i feel like the resentment was dragged out from when she found out up until the day before Joel died. JJ PQ Ellie would’ve wanted to be sacrificed if it meant saving humanity. She even told Joel at the end of the first game that she’s waiting for her turn to die like Riley.
This scene brought me to tears, Joel was so happy he got a second chance with Ellie, and part of me is glad he died knowing that, but for Ellie it myst feel like hell.
That scene at the dance at the end, the Asian guy talking to Ellie referred to Joel as "your old man", and Ellie doesn't correct him. That said a lot to me.
I disagree I think it would be out of character for either of them to come right out and say it. It would seem too unnatural and fake based on their character design. The awkward pauses, struggling to find words, attempting to hide their emotions fits them perfectly. Neither wants to appear weak to the other, that's what makes their relationship work so well. They are so much like each other and it scares them to really vocalize it. Because in reality it's just a young girl and an old man, just strangers in a post apocalyptic world trying to survive. Anything different would seem weird and out of place. What makes this scene so powerful goes without saying literally without saying anything. Amazing how such emotions gets sparked with such few words, it's the body language, the hesitation in the voices, it's the emotion behind those very few words spoken. Joel doesn't have to say I love you, its reflected in his actions, he was willing to die trying it save her. I think that's why ellie is willing to forgive him, because though her life to the world may not matter anymore but her life mattered to someone, Joel. Shes beginning to see that maybe that's enough. She might not have saved the world with a vaccine but she saved Joel from himself.
It shows how much Joel loves Ellie when he saved her from the hospital and instead of letting her die. But sadly Ellie won’t forgive him until her last conversation with Joel
It sucks man it hurts that Joel didn’t receive that forgiveness from her I can’t really tell if she ever really loved him like I don’t know if she only saw him as a friend or father figure? But shit still hurts well Ellie didn’t really need him in the beginning idk man I’m still scratching my head I’m trying to process this
@Manny Olivarez Ellie always loved Joel. Even when she was angry at him she still loved him as a father. You can see at the ball scene she felt instantly guilty for telling him she doesn't need his help (watch her facial expressions as she instantly regrets what she said). At the end we see that she was finally willing to admit to him that she wanted to rebuild their relationship and forgive him in time. Except she never had the chance because Abby killed him the next day and that's why Ellie goes on a revenge mission, because she felt guilty about not getting more time with Joel after forgiving him or even speaking to him about it sooner.
This is how you honor joel naughtudog. Are you kidding me. Joel was a huge part of this. Oh and ellie if you think dying for something means your life matters. It doesnt your worth more to people alive then dead.
But it was possible her life could have gave a vaccine and saved the world though and in her eyes she sees it as Joel stealing that for his own selfishness and making people who died in helping them get to the fireflies in the first place like Tess, Sam and Henry's death mean nothing. Also doesn't help that killed Marlene someone close to not only Ellie but Ellies mom too.

Every time Ellie calls out to Joel and begs for him not to be killed is even more heartbreaking after watching the flashbacks. She hated him for lying to her, but Ellie still loved Joel very much.
When Joel said “I’ll like that” and you can hear is voice break...and then you see what happened to him the day after...This game is depressing for the sake of being Depressing it was not needed. They did Joel Dirty survived 25+years killing and protecting people and the way he goes out is a fucking golf club!
Ellie still has a lot of growing up to do. Without Joel, she's lost. Her priorities are out of whack. After everything her and Joel had gone through, she shouldn't be shocked or upset that Joel risked everything to save her.
And it's not like he's even a bad dude. The fireflies knocked him out and put her in surgery before either of them woke up... then Marlene said to Joel "it's what she wants... and you know that." Before Joel killed her.. WELL IF YOU ARE SO SURE OF THAT THEN WHY THE FUCK DID YOU MAKE SURE SHE COULDNT SAY OTHERWISE MARLENE?!?! I one million percent believe had they let ellie choose to do the surgery or not and if she had said yes. Joel would have been heartbroken and left without killing anybody willingly. Its the single fact they DIDNT give him or HER a option. They literally saw Joel and her unconscious. Grabbed them both, put her on meds and made sure she wouldn't wake up. Then they literally pointed a gun at Joel and said leave.. what the fuck you think he's gonna do? Joel was NEVER a bad man. He literally defends himself and ellie through the ENTIRETY of his story. He never went out if his way to kill ANYBODY who wasnt trying to kill him or her. and I'm fuckin sick of all the part 2 fan girls acting like he is when Abby has and will always be the "Micah bell" of the last of us. Difference is they praise her but hate him. Probably because your physically forced to play as her. Its funny too, especially When Micah is a far more enjoyable villain/charecter by ten folds. They really fuckin force down your throats in part 2 that "the fireflies were the good guys" also. As if when in part 1 they are the complete opposite SMH.
@@fullsendabeerforme2988 absolutely agree with all that! I get why they didn’t give her choice even if it was a crappy thing to do. But I also believe that he would’ve accepted Ellie’s decision if she’d stayed.
What's particularly hilarious is that Joel tells Tommy to keep driving to leave people to their fate in TLOU1, but in TLOU2 Joel puts himself and Tommy into clear danger for a single stranger. Letting more people into your car isn't particularly dangerous. Probably.
Bro imagine if the story was about dina getting killed becuz joel was so stubborn and let her die and ellie didnt forgive joel and the story is about forgiveness and at the end ellie forgives joel and he dies a grateful death sacrificing himself to save ellie, or somethin like that it would have been better
Im really sad that Joel's no longer part of this story. But i guess you can say he'll always be a part of us. In our hearts. I still haven't gotten over his death. I mean we had an entire game with him and we basically had a bond towards him at that point. May he rest in peace and reunite with Sarah
i kinda can't forgive ellie for ignoring joel for two years. she literally was the only person (except tommy) he loved and cared about after such long time. imagine how lonely this old man was
It pisses me off that people tend to be rude with old parents, as they wouldnt has flaws and regrets as young people do too. I mean, he had good intentions on her, and thats gold. If someone has anyone that cares this much about, thats a very rare gift, but usually the person only realize that after death (a simple hug and "thank you for saving me" would make much more sense but, anyway, some people like to inflict self sabotage).
@@poutsamouni5483 He didn't doom humanity, a vaccine wouldn't magically restore the world back to how it used to be, and it's not like the Fireflies had a mean to distribute it globally
Im so mad how Ellie treated Joel like that. Like he saved your life from the zombie outbreak he taught you so many skills for the outbreak. And u treat him like that....
i understand both sides but i do believe ellie has a genuine reason to be upset with him like her immunity had the possibility of saving thousands of lives and she's trying to deal with her survivor's guilt i get both sides and do agree that she could have been more open minded regarding his reasoning and tried to have a conversation earlier but i still completely understand why she ended up being upset with him
Ellie would've sacrificed herself. She's now burdened by the fact that she could've potentially saved the world and ended the suffering. She resented Joel and probably resented herself for being so close with him, that's why she pushed him away. Just as she was starting to forgive him, Abby took him away.
Fadilla Achmad saved the world? Did you even listened to the walkie talkie from the first game? Thats its not even possible to get the cure and Ellie would’ve died for nothing..and even if they found a cure..the whole world is already fucked up filled with bandits and most of all....violence.
@@euronico7949 Did YOU listen to the recording? The reason they said that even if they found someone else that was immune, no cure would be able to be made was because "the only person who could synthesize a vaccine (meaning Abby's dad) is dead." As in he was killed by Joel and that's why even with another immune person, no vaccine is possible." If Joel had let them go through with it, the one man who could make a vaccine, Abby's dad, might've possibly succeeded
“My life would have fucking mattered.” Look this man in the eyes and tell him that your life doesn’t matter. She saved him in more ways than she’ll ever know. She matters to Dina. JJ. There was no guarantee that a fucking vaccine would have even worked or caused any sort of change. This kills me. I love that Joel told her he would do it again if he could. That’s as close to an “I love you” that we’ll get from him.
"If somehow the Lord gave me a second chance at that moment..I would do it all over again." This line was so perfect as for his ending.. Making it sound like Joel accepted his fate and doesn't regret his choice.. Its sad that a lot of people hated the story since it has some quite strong messages behind it.. But i guess naughty dog didn't really handle the story well.. Their idea wasn't bad honestly its just the way they handled it that was stupid.
The story was good, but Naughty Dogs fucked up at how they tie it off, it just had a lot of plot holes on it and people could only speculate. Maybe that's their intention, but in a game that's pretty much an interactive movie, you shouldn't really leave the major story points for speculation, the major points of a story is what keeps it together and what drives it forward. You can keep the things in-between for speculation, but not the major stuff. Why did Ellie give up at the end ? Why did she go after Abby again, when she was ready to leave her revenge crusade behind back at the theatre ? That was the point where Ellie was the closest to getting her revenge and she WILLINGLY accepted to back to Jackson and leave it behind. Why did Tommy want to go after Abby again ? He was the one that planned how the group was gonna get back to Jackson and he knew that going back meant that Abby lives. He even asked Ellie if that was ok for HER. Why did she keep going after all the carnage and killing Nora ? She was obviously fucked up after Nora's interrogation and yet, she decided to keep killing people. Why did she wait for Jesse and Tommy to join them, so she can finally decide to go back to Jackson ? Ellie knew that Dina was pregnant before Tommy and Jesse came, but she kept going on her crusade, EVEN THOUGH she was willing to go back to Jackson for Dina and her baby's sake. If i'm not mistaken, it was Ellie's idea to go back, as well. Sure, you can speculate those points and go like: "She gave up, because she realized that killing Abby would just repeat the cycle with Lev, the same way that it did with Ellie and Joel." and even though that i like this theory, it's still bad to leave this up for speculation. Same with the rest.
@Bobby Papoutsis well said. I'm ok with Joel dying it's just the way they written it was done so poorly and cheaply earned. They're some truly amazing moments in this game but the overall theme of the story ruins most of the experience for me.
Joel was the best video game dad anyone could have asked for, this isn’t the Ellie we know and we definitely know she wouldn’t have treated him this way at all. Joel was trying to stand up for her, Ellie could’ve beat his ass no problem but Joel wanted her to know he had her back and would protect her, this game is ridiculous and just isn’t realistic at all. It’s just so sad to see someone like Joel being executed in such a unforgiving way and then Ellie finally catch up to his killer just to say “NoPe ReVenGe iS BaD”
At that moment revenge have no sense anymore. And from Abby's perspective Joel was True villain, she motives to do what she does, from her's perspective everything have sense And conclusion - it is very sad, but unfortunatelly every action have consequences
It makes sense why Joel ended up helping Abby survive. He was grateful for the fact that his adopted daughter finally gave him chance for forgiveness, and he wanted to express his gratitude in his actions towards a stranger. He also mentioned he got his beloved coffee after trading with a group that passed by, so he may have also been hoping that his courtesy might allow him trade as well.
@@samuel8118 bruh a good person is such a jaded term. Joel tortured and killed long before using the skills to protect Ellie. It’s highly implied he became ruthless after the death of Sara. Calling him “good” ignores the greatness the original game tried to imply.
@@samuel8118 she literally has continuous nightmares, and has guilt tearing away slowly at her. It all culminates with her trying to pretend nothing matters and Joel deserved it, etc., and when Owen finally calls her out on it, she knows he’s right and physically lashes out. Of course she has feelings for Owen too which makes it into a sex scene, but still, the purpose of the scene is to force Abby to confront that inner guilt by facing her lover who tells her to be better. And she then chooses the day after to return to Lev, to try and help the strangers who helped her, as opposed to what she did to Joel. And after saving them, her next dream isn’t another nightmare, but her alive father greeting her like he used to. God I love this game
The game I expected was done in flashbacks, which imo should have been extended into a dlc or game. I imagined where Ellie and Joel are at the settlement. Ellie gets information from people passing by that the fireflies have disbanded after "someone" took them down. Eventually she runs away, and Joel finds out to bring her back to the settlement. You play as Ellie hiding and running away from Joel. Joel finally catches up, you argue and Ellie leaves an emotionally hurt Joel. After leaving Joel, Ellie hears something. Annoyed, she checks to expect Joel still following her, but sees Joel is actually in danger. Either infected or people, whatever, but a guilty Ellie decides to go back and help him out. After the fight, they somewhat reconcile, as Ellie understands she doesnt want to lose Joel just as he didn't want to lose her. Joel recognizes Ellie deserves answers and helps her on her journey to the hospital. At the hospital, Ellie finds nurses and doctor's notes about the surgery that could have been. Mixed notes about the surgery would more likely have failed. Would her sacrifice been in vain or should have it happened anyway? That's the question Ellie has, which leads to her "I want to try to forgive you" conversation with Joel.
I wish they release a patch where it's revealed Joel didn't actually die, he was just concussed by the first golf club blow, he become conscious again to beat the shit out of Abby and her goons, and watches on with pride as Ellie and Dina raise JJ.
Ellie's last words to Joel were actually "Joel, please get up" this was their last conversation But no matter how many times I watch it, this still makes my heart squeeze

1:00 after Joel intervenes and walks away, you can tell by the look on Ellie's face, she sees that Joel is still very protective of her and that he still cares about her deeply despite their relationship being in shambles. Her face goes from angry to almost sad. I think this moment helped motivate her to reconcile with him. Cause of everything they had been through together, she always felt safe with Joel. That's my take on it anyway.
She butchered her away across America to Seattle. She even killed a pregnant woman because she was blind by revenge for Joel. She even leaves her new family because she has ptsd over joel. That's how Neo-Westerns are. Look at the deaths in Logan, or No Country, Hell or High Water. None of them are spectacular or deserving of the character. Most of the deaths are meant to serve a narrative purpose. To highlight injustice and challenge the audience to find justice themselves.
This game got me depressed asf

I never knew my dad and seeing her treat him like this pissed me off
As a father, I think Joel knew Ellie didn’t meant for it to come out that way (when she yelled at him).

This recontextualized Joel's death for me. He died knowing his adopted daughter loved him. That's far more than most get in that world.
I think at that moment of tragedy, Joel knew that Ellie still loves her as her father. I haven't played the game but it seems Joel is already beat at the start of Part 2, like all he wanted, all he lived for is for Ellie to forgive her. It's really sad: "I only live because -" ✌️
Do you mean him?
Thank you. Nobody has mentioned this at all.
"My life would have mattered"
"For me your life already did. That's why I did it in the first place."
Would be a bit on the nose if that was what he said. Ellie understands that already
@birb kun that's pretty decent
Marlene nearly died and lost most of her crew going from Boston to the hospital. You think the Fireflies had the means to distribute a vaccine? The same Fireflies who were so weak after 1 man escaped them that they practically disbanded? Would surviving a bite or spores really change the world? Would a vaccine have prevented the war between WLF and the Scars? Faction wars kill more people than the infected do in both games. Would you give the vaccine to the hunters in Pittsburgh who kill people and take all their stuff? The Rattlesnake who take people as slaves? The cannibals?

@@dathunderman4 you reminded me of that part, goodness i forgot they were gonna watch a movie. joel truly is a great father for ellie, and she took him for granted too much
at least she got to tell him what was on her mind. and at least he got to hear her say she was willing to forgive him. and even though its sad how he died, even though ellie was in distress, at least he got to see her again the next day.
When I saw this scene for the first time i felt sick, then pissed, Joel should of gotten a better death than that
I've been so focused on Ellie when she says, "My life would've fucking mattered..." Concentrating on all of Joel's micro-reactions, he shakes his head after she says that.
Holy shit you're right, he's kinda like "What the hell, YOUR LIFE MATTER"
It was an impossible ask for me."
That's all it boils down to. This is a conversation about emotions, not an argument about logic.

Whats funny is that Tommys home has survived for this long and so many years so clearly it’s working...
I really dont understand people who make this argument. If humamity isnt worth saving, why are you saving this little girl? Is she not human? Do you not want her to live a life amungst other humans? How does this make sense? If you think humanity isn't worth saving, fine. @@CrazyGamingXL in that world it might as well be "Fuck everyone and everything except everyone in Jackson."
@@zomkiller200o Sure if that's how you want to play it, fine. You want to be an asshole to everyone except your group, fine.

Abby's 1st golf swing, without attempting to protect himself = welcome death as he has nothing worth fighting for.
Ellie begs Joel to get up = Joel relives a moment form the past from when he was impaled
Joel: "I struggled for a long time with survivin', and no matter what, you keep finding something to fight for"
Without Ellie he had nothing worth fighting for and could no longer survive.
"Ellie says she can't ever forgive him, but like to try = more pain and completely given up with living"
Nah, Joel never gave up.

There's no dialogue as for joel thoroughly explaining what happened *to her and Ellie questioning why he Joel did what he did (of course seeing their relationship, she knows why but that is why its so confusing for why she became distant and angry.) This conversation is not flushed out and the longevity of anger seems forced and super convenient for this bittersweet moment of forgiveness for the ending of Part II.
I love how Joel's body language changes once he decides to say that he would do it again to show his sincerity, and Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson blow me away there has to be an Oscar for acting in a video game they are top notch

I hate you for saving me... excuse me wtf
LOOK HOW THEY MASSACRED MY BOY!!!!
Im literally crying right now....
Me too man I very rarely cry like I cried when he died
@Aliyah
:(
God I so badly wanted them to say I love you, or for Ellie to call Joel dad.
Me too
Too bad 60% of the game is more focused about abby not the main character himself 😅
That scene at the dance at the end, the Asian guy talking to Ellie referred to Joel as "your old man", and Ellie doesn't correct him. That said a lot to me.
I know right! I loved it when joel would call ellie kiddo or when in the first game after she killed david joel held her and called her babygirl
Here is my last word: Thank you for saving us $60.

Yea you can thank hulk for all of this
When Joel said “I’ll like that” and you can hear is voice break...and then you see what happened to him the day after...This game is depressing for the sake of being Depressing it was not needed. They did Joel Dirty survived 25+years killing and protecting people and the way he goes out is a fucking golf club!

I think he got hit from a shotgun first, no?
Julian _ he hit his leg or something
Julian _ Abby shot him in the right leg fucking it up so he wouldn’t be able to fight back then she bashed his skull in Negan style w/ the golf club.
But how else is he meant to go? It’s more realistic that way. What else do you expect
Ellie still has a lot of growing up to do. Without Joel, she's lost. Her priorities are out of whack. After everything her and Joel had gone through, she shouldn't be shocked or upset that Joel risked everything to save her.
I know right?
He potentially doomed mankind and lied to her about it for years she had every right to cut him out of her life completely
It pisses me off that people tend to be rude with old parents, as they wouldnt has flaws and regrets as young people do too. I mean, he had good intentions on her, and thats gold. If someone has anyone that cares this much about, thats a very rare gift, but usually the person only realize that after death (a simple hug and "thank you for saving me" would make much more sense but, anyway, some people like to inflict self sabotage).

i understand both sides but i do believe ellie has a genuine reason to be upset with him like her immunity had the possibility of saving thousands of lives and she's trying to deal with her survivor's guilt i get both sides and do agree that she could have been more open minded regarding his reasoning and tried to have a conversation earlier but i still completely understand why she ended up being upset with him

Thats its not even possible to get the cure and Ellie would’ve died for nothing..and even if they found a cure..the whole world is already fucked up filled with bandits and most of all....violence.

a nah
"If somehow the Lord gave me a second chance at that moment..I would do it all over again."
This line was so perfect as for his ending..

At that moment revenge have no sense anymore. And from Abby's perspective Joel was True villain, she motives to do what she does, from her's perspective everything have sense
And conclusion - it is very sad, but unfortunatelly every action have consequences
