  • What is the best garage door in America? While that question is elusive and ever changing, I can tell you which is the most HATED garage door in America. In fact, this video dives into 5 reasons why the 9100 has become infamous among homeowners and garage door pros. We'll expose its European origins, the trouble with the Torquemaster spring system, and why this door is about as waterproof as a tissue. Plus, we'll highlight why Wayne Dalton themselves might not be too proud of this model.
    Thinking about buying a 9100? Take a moment to watch! (You’ll thank me later) This video will show you why it's best to steer clear and invest in a garage door that can handle the American climate. Their supply house is so nice to visit give aways and beautiful display. I love converting these torque masters. I agree with your take leave the decisions and opinions to the customer we serve.

    I inherited the 9100 with a new used house in 2008 with the integrated iDrive opener. It had metal wheels on the door panels when I inherited it. The integrated opener became unserviceable with no parts available. In 2012, I swapped out the whole Wayne Dalton jackshaft/iDrive opener with a new conventional jackshaft, pulleys cables, and springs. I put on a Liftmaster Jackshaft opener. This door has worked fine ever since with just regular maintenance. No hinge issues. I have had to service the sticking power deadbolt this year (12 years old), although that product is not from Wayne Dalton. I liked this door setup since 2012, after the swap out of the poorly engineered jackshaft mechanisms.

    That's good info for if I ever have to replace one of my doors.
    If you have to add more struts, cost wise you may as well just upgrade to a better door.

    Interesting. I had a 9100 on my last house with the torque master spring. The spring snapped after i think 14 years. I converted it to traditional springs. My rail on the bottom was even rusted pretty bad and the roller was loose when the door was fully down. Still never had any issues with the actual door or hinges.

    The 9100 was installed on our new home. I didn't know the brand until after the fact but what I disliked about it was that I couldn't install a jackshaft opener. The installers were terrible, and I had to add just the doors after we closed on the house. It's been through several Fl storms, hot summers and a few nights of freezing temps and so far, so good. It even stood up to a drop kick from some neighborhood pre-teen and only had scuff from his shoe. Will it break. probably but my mom's new house had a broken torsion spring within 5 or 6 years and my old house had a broken support spring so none of them will last forever.

    As a tech, i actually don’t hate the 9100 because its so light it’s easy to work on, but i will never replace it with a torque master. Had a customer yesterday call saying they moved in a new construction house 2.5 years ago and it already broke… this was a 600k house in chicago. We are going to only be converting to 30k cycle springs to help the customers out with the cost of conversion

      Hey Brandon! Thanks for your feedback!
      2.5 years? Wow that is not surprising. Some of the new homes here were breaking around 4 years.

    Have a 9100 but they didn't install the torque master system. Interesting, it was professionally installed too. Guess they knew about the issue a few years back.

    What door would u recommend to replace the 9100 if u don't mind spending a few extra dollars to get a better quality door?
    In the meantime i will check around your previous vids to see if the answer is there ✌
    Update: just watched "Are INSULATED Garage Doors Safer?". That was a helpful vid regarding Safe-Way doors (formerly First United Door).

    The 9100/9600 was designed as a pinch resistant insulated door. Although the design made it possible to sell in some European markets, it was designed as a low cost insulated door that fit a market in the US. For many years it was and may still be the number one selling insulated residential door. The idea was at some time, the US market would follow the pinch resistant standard that Europe has. That did not happen. To much politics in the US market. The TorqueMaster system was developed to be a safer alternative to the torsion springs. It later became the part of the system that used the I-drive opener. The 9100 is a low cost builders door that is lite weight and easy to install. It come ready to assemble and there are many of them that are 15 to 20 years old still operating. If you want to compare a higher quality door, look at the 8300 or 8500. They are much heavier, thicker steel, hinge backup plates, better R value and much more expensive.

      This is great feedback! You're a completely correct about how this particular garage door was designed to be a pinch resistant solution.
      I do hope that Wayne Dalton revisits the engineering of this garage door and gives us a new iteration. Thank you for your comment!

    Well Damn, I just Purchased 2 Wayne Dalton 9100's 9x7's for my garage. after my wife backed into aone and the other was just beat to hell. I hope that i haven't watsed $1400. I live in NE Georgia and liked the fact that it was insulated. They are thinner thatn I expected. Is it possible to use the existing torsion springs with the new doors> I know WD says they want you to use the supplied tracks and torqmaster. Now i am just worried that i made a mistake.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you for sharing your situation.
      $1400 for a pair of 9 by 7 is not a horrible deal. Like most things, if properly maintained, the 9100's can last for a long time. In my area of So Cal these doors thrive for some reason. I imagine that in Georgia the 9100 model is wind loaded for the intense weather. Please check in from time to time to let us know how the doors hold up.

    As a Wayne Dalton customer my can confirm STAY AWAY FROM WAYNE DALTON. Many, many reasons starting with non-delivery, non existent customer service, and when you do finally get the doors you fought so hard to get, they are low quality. Wound up installing WD doors on Clopay tracks, the WD springs are instant trash. DO NOT BUY!!!

    Help... I watched your video on how to know what tension springs should be on your garage door and I have a Wayne Dalton 9005 it's a 7 x16 I have a 218x21 on one side and a 218x19 on the other... is this correct or is it bad to have different sizes on each size? What should be the correct size 🤷‍♀️

      Mismatched Springs are just fine as long as they balance the door so just work it by hand and if it feels balanced that's the key. However I know those Springs will not last that long. They are less than a 10,000 cycle set of Springs

    • @DaLoco33
      @DaLoco33 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing to worry about, if the door shot up or didn’t lift up in the begging then yes you would have added the wrong springs

    Emits poorly designed and made the cocking even come off after a year or two on the sides where top panels.
    It damages more then not with the torque master also because most customer have no clue what makes it go up and down. After they press the button 10 times and destroy the motor or run it to the ground it's not user friendly.
    Yesterday I had a customer who had loose hinges on the right side and when it would go down it would bounce from the gap. Well it turns out that the metal square bit piece snapped in half at the 90° turn so there wasn't anywhere to stabilize the roller to the door.
    We don't deal with wd here and he was cheap cheap. So my bandaid was to take a thing same gauge piece of metal from a closet I swapped out and put it on over the broken piece and faster it. Worked like but it's ridiculous that its such a cheap door especially on all homes from low 200+ $ all the way to the 900+ I try to replace it asap the whole system by education it works out for most part.
    Most people want options not ultimatums and education is the best way to provide options
