  • In its annual spring football game, Michigan showed it still has an impressive array of depth, athleticism, and physicality. However, it also showed it doesn’t yet have a QB1.

IMO Warren looked the best, with orji second. I had hoped for denegal but he looked pretty bad. The defense definitely looks like it's gonna be great again. Edwards looks like he's gonna be great. RB room in general will be good. Wide receivers have potential. Oline looked ok. My biggest concern is definitely kicker... We need a better kicker.

Correct, I've been watching about as long.....no one put the ball on a string with zip throwing across his body while running like JJ did, no one close.

@doctordetroit4339 yep. JJ could throw really well from the pocket but so could a lot of others like Chad Henne. But nobody could do the stuff on the run that JJ did. If you chased him out of the pocket, he made you pay dearly. That on the run TD throw against Nebraska still blows my mind

Orji is a threat because of his strength and running ability and when you play touch football it takes that away. His throws were not terrible and once he can run it will make the defense actually play with a spy which gives the offense an advantage. No way a transfer comes in and does anything with this team

  • @log82goblue97
    @log82goblue97 หลายเดือนก่อน

Orji eas taken out the game for 2 quarters but nobody was saying any of this when he was the only qb last spring game before this one to not turn the ball over. Since the spring game shows everything in evaluation of QBs. In this style of orji opens up the option with edwards on the field with him. Michigan had the most 3rd and shorts converted last season. When it’s 3rd ad 3 , nobody has shown they could tackle orji solo. It takes multiple people to tackle him. The offense was 60th ranked last season and the team won the title. It doesn’t require a qb to throw 25x per game.

  • @stevenvargo2440

Normally I would agree with Steve, but I think the time to get one was during the early portal period. Unfortunately, Harbaugh was still in limbo about staying or going as was JJ. Now it's most likely too late unless you want to take someone else's scraps. IMO, I think we saw enough from Saturdays scrimmage to believe that we have two playable QBs; maybe even 3 if Tuttle can rehab his injured elbow before season starts. The likelihood of getting someone via the portal who's better and will be able to learn the offense well enough is very slim. OC Campbell pretty much stated after the game they're not looking at the portal for QB help at this time. I do however believe they will look to add a starting caliber kicker, and depth at WR, DLine, LB and Safety or Corner. But let's be honest...this team is not last years team. It's not gonna win a National Championship. Can it still beat OSU and win the Big10? I think so. Our style of play is why that's possible. We're more physical than most teams and that matters. But let's let this play out. Even if Arch Manning jumped in the portal tomorrow, it'd cost a billion dollars to bring him to Ann Arbor. So it wouldn't matter anyway because Michigan doesn't pay for players to go there. Trust the coaching staff and their culture, and we'll be fine.

It's hard to say with the relatively small sample size given that no QB was in for the entire game, but overall, I thought Orji acquitted himself well. That last drive he was put back in, he lead them downfield and did get into the end zone, just had it called back because a defender got a hand on him.
But, if you ask me, the angle the defender had and the direction Orji was moving away from him, in a live tackle situation there is no way Orji gets brought down. That's a touchdown.
I'm less concerned about the QB situation. I think Orji will almost certainly be the guy this season. Jadyn Davis will undoubtedly develop into QB1 for next season or the season after.
The kicking situation definitely needs more attention, though. We got spoiled with Jake 'Money' Moody, and Turner last year was an OK replacement.
Playing the way this team likes to play, there will absolutely be situations where the kicker getting points on the board will be vital.
Definitely agree on the physicality front. Aside from the no-tackling-the-QB rule, there was some excellent tackling and the one play where the RB had a violent block against the blitz, outstanding. They were not playing super easy out there. They were going for it. Competing hard.

Being discouraged when Orji can't back in the game at the end is showing a bit of bias. He came in and took the offense down the field and actually scored... Moore blew the whistle on that play prematurely.... Orji played very well with the exception of two passes the entire game... Orji will be QB1 and Warren will be the backup... Michigan will not be looking into the portal for transfer QB... We're good at QB with what we have internally and will prove it on the field those upcoming season.

This is going to be a spotted bag of tricks at best… but let's not say for lack of foresight, we don't have a quarterback - Michigan has several, and for the first time in a long time, this is not a bad place to be in.
Orji looks fantastic, people need to wrap their heads around Alex being the starter, it's going to happen. He actively has the most to work with, with respect to the way Michigan's offensive built... he is not a drop-back passer so superimposing pocket passer metrics over a dual threat quarterback is continuing to befuddle people, stop it already!
He doesn't have to pass.... not at all.
As long as he is the fourth rushing option at 3rd and red zone situations, that's enough to open up the defense... and give them cause for pause, while considering to exert an option - that is the whole purpose for the DT quarterback, it puts an offense in the best place to move the chains.
Now, when do you pass? You pass you want to, not because you're forced to... Did Michigan's offense is so good right now, they don't need to pass.
Which is why the RPO game is so strong, which is why you l pass when you want to toy with the opposing defense... Not because you have to, because your quarterback has no legs and can't scramble more than eggs.
Orji's got the same things he’s gotta work on this slowly getting better, Davis Warren did step up, but he didn’t step out of all we expected he'd step up, but rather, in line with where we knew he would be.
As for Denegal, if anyone makes a break for the transfer portal, I’m predicting he’ll be first… he’s ancillary at this point, but he has snaps Warren very few - and as for the true freshman Davis, he only had one snap... I think... so, for me what do you want to say? Lol
In my mind it’s going to be:
    1. Orji
    2. Warren
    3. Denegal
    4. Davis
I think what Sherrone Moore is gonna end up doing is exactly what Jim Harbaugh did when you had bubble quarterbacks, where they’re right on the bubble, play them both until The bubble bursts, and one advances
At any rate, the thing to be proud of is that Michigan’s QB bench is stacked and the defense looked awesome…
    M Go Blue🏈

      Orgi will never pass??

    • @woodshed_moments
      @woodshed_moments หลายเดือนก่อน

@@taxisquad11 no, that is not what I am sharing... It's just, when you bring talent on you have to measure the talent by the basics of the position. And then play that out against the way the game is played today, and there's a curious full circle to be observed.
The pocket passer isn't the thing anymore, the game has gone 360 back to the original quarterback, which was nothing more than a running back with an arm.
This advent, has been rebranded the RPO game, and the best quarterback to run this dynamic is a dual-threat quarterback.
Alex Orji puts Michigan in the best position to capitalize on where they left off... Because as good as JJ McCarthy was, JJ was just mobile, Orji can actually rush.
Michigan hasn't had that since Denard Robinson.
And those who remember, remember Denard Robinson took a toll on defenses... it would be beautiful to get that aspect back.
Look, don't get me wrong, I like this kid Davis Warren, but he's not even really mobile... so if he could work on that, you might be looking at JJ Jr. - and firmly believe he will play at Michigan.
But as it stands, the priority has to shift to what keeps the offense the most together for what it is. Orji without a doubt, considering what quarterback model Alabama had in Jalen Milroe, for Michigan to just have the equivalent on their bench, would be suicidal and not starting him.
Because as far as his passing goes, he passes more than good enough for what you would need a dual threat QB to handle - the trick here for the offensive coordinator, is to game in a way, where the quarterback is not put into position to need to have to pass, passing should always be the "option", not the necessity.
      Hence.... "smash-mouth"
Now, does that mean you do not continue to sharpen that weapon with his passing, by all means you would be remiss in not doing so...
Just don't lose sight of the fact that he's a dual-threat quarterback, you run your dual threat on 3rd down and Red zone situations... and remember the pass is just the option.
That way defenses are always on their toes.

Dude, are you blind? Orji was actually pretty good late in the game with many completions and an absurdly dumb "no TD" call and this part of the game wasn't exactly garbage time. Rewatch. You overstate.
Warren did look the best, I just don't think it was by the margins you claim. You fairly note this game is just one of of many more development stages this Spring. These young men are in a stage of hyper-development.
Oriji does have the advantage of more upside than the older Warren and is certainly more physical. But, QB's, if strictly pocket passers, have many more years to develop now and less likely to get injured than mobile qb's.. See Tom Brady!!
Nonetheless, you do great work much of the time.
