If JJ has 1 flaw, it's that he'll occassionally go full Justin Fields & force 10/10 difficulty throws (and often succeed anyway - at the college level anyway) when a layup is available. That said, in 5 years when we re-evaluate this QB class, I bet he's top 3...and I wouldn't be surprised if he's #1.
And no, I'm not a Michigan fan.

Yes, that and he too often scrambles around trying to make something happen rather than throw the ball away. I think they can coach these things out of him at the next level.

JJ is going to a place where the HC was a QB, the QB coach has been on a ton of teams for a long time, and has a veteran QB that’s been in the league awhile and was recently in the Kyle Shanahan system. I’m hoping JJ will be great with all the people around him in Minnesota leading him in the right direction.

Finally someone understands it. McCarthy was under tremendous pressure to win at UM. Maye was under no pressure to win at UNC. None. And still he lost all 4 of his final games in 2022 and 5 of his final 7 games in 2023. McCarthy won both games against OSU while Maye lost both games against instate rival NC State. Maye inherited an 8-5 team and went 17-9 with it. In the business world that's called no value added. Meanwhile McCarthy went 27-1 and his only loss was in the national semi final game.

College record doesn't mean much... Mahomes went 13-19 at Texas Tech. Josh Allen went 16-8 at Wyoming. Tebow went 48-7 in Florida and Vince Young was 30-2 in Texas... You can argue Tebow and Young were under much more "pressure" but think the pro careers speak for themselves.

JJ is a lock in the top 10. Highly likely top 5. Would not be surprised if he is in the top 3. Regardless, IMO, he has a chance to be the top QB in this draft... if he has the right situation.
Crazy that media "experts" say definitively that Maye is a better passer, even though JJ completed 240 passes last year and Maye somehow was "astronomically higher" 269. JJ had a higher passer efficiency rating, higher completion rate, higher yards per attempt and lower int/game. JJ threw the third fasest ball ever at the combine, 61 MPH, even though mwdia experts have told us his arm was a question mark. He ran a 4.58 40. He won at least 6 games that were biggest than Maye even played in. JJ is also younger than Maye.

Falcons fan here. I would actually love for the Falcons to pick JJ McCarthy at #8 if he’s there. He wouldn’t have to start and can learn from Kirk Cousins for a couple years (like the Green Bay model). It’s a way of extending a Cousins level QB beyond 2 years by transferring that knowledge and how to prepare.
Everyone wants the Falcons to pick Dallas Turner but honestly I don’t know if he’s going to be a dominant edge player. If there was a Bosa or Hutchinson there then take him. But I think they have an opportunity to set up the QB position for a decade.

I'll give myself a shout out. Got the strategy right, just didn't know which QB they liked. I'm fine with Penix. Stronger arm, more accurate on deep routes. He's a little older for the GB model, but honestly that only matters at the back end of his career and honestly as a team you should be drafting a new QB every few years anyway.
The true value is in learning behind a guy who knows what he's doing. That's why a lot of rookies fail is there's no continuity in front of them. Green Bay back in the 90's had Mark Brunell and Matt Hasselbeck behind Brett Favre long before Aaron Rodgers, and those guys went on to star in the league.

He'll be the most successful NFL QB of this class. Ideally, it'd be best (because of his age) if he went somewhere he could sit behind a solid vet for a couple of year; unless he goes to the vikings (looking likely). I mean, the 3rd string QB was putting up 400+ yd multi td games with them last year. He'd be great (with some normal growing pains) from day 1 if he goes there. “JJ didn’t have a lot of yards” he didn’t play in the 4th quarter at all in the first 8 games, got hurt against Penn State, could barely walk the next week and still gritted it out, beat OSU again with insane throws into tiny windows, the td to Roman Wilson he said he saw the safety’s tendency on film to turn his head so he knew he had the throw open shows he’s cerebral in film watching. He wasn’t healthy until the Bama game where Michigan continued to keep Bama in a game that should’ve been a blowout, two muffed punts, a big td run given up by the defense, JJ one handing an errant throw from Donovan Edwards, and casually launching it 35 yards downfield off his back foot with Dallas Turner in his lap, then proceeded to lead a game tying drive with a critical 4th and 2 pass from his own 27 yard line. His biggest flaw is throwing every pass like it needs to be 100mph when some passes could use some touch, which can easily be fixed with a competent qb coach, and holding the ball too long and not taking throwaways which can also be easily fixed. JJ will be the top qb in this draft mark my words.

It's not because the Vikings drafted him and they're my team.
As a Viking fan you are tuned to think and feel the opposite.
But the only 2 QBs in the draft I have any confidence in are McCarthy and Penix.
I've seen more Penix stuff than McCarthy.
I don't know how he'll do. Nor does anyone else and all the kid can do is go out and do his best.

He was not the same confident player he was before. Up til then I thought he was the leading Heisman candidate. But he came back to himself during the playoffs. I’ve noticed he is a really good QB with his back turned on play action, he totally reminds me of Brady then. Also he doesn’t get enough credit for his arm strength he can really sling it on deep throws over the middle.

...and Bryce Young went to a Panthers team that was....struggling, to put it nicely. Absolutely no comparison to the situation that McCarthy landed in with the Vikings. Every other QB in this year's draft would have chosen to go to Minnesota instead of where they wound up (maybe even over any other team in the league, with a couple exceptions), without hesitation, if they could. I bet that if Bryce Young had landed in a similar situation to what McCarthy did, he would have been far more successful as a result. I don't mean any disrespect towards Carolina, or their fans, but come on. Anyone who's being completely honest with themselves can admit that being drafted by that Panthers team clearly hindered Young's success.

JJ McCarty might be great for a WR like Tyree Hill. Someone fast who can get collage separation in open spaces. He has a rocket arm for getting the ball there quick. Its Jake Maye foe someone like Justin Jefferson who relies on his body control and going up and attacking the ball. McCarthy throws it to hard and has no arc on the ball. There not a good match. Stuff like that only gets scouted by the teams.

JJ commanded the handoff and trailed some running plays in case there was a fumble. He would be the anti Brock Purdy. Purdy was Iowa State's offense for 4 years. Playing from behind a lot with an average supporting cast. The NFL does suck at evaluating QBs, that's for sure.

What! The run game and O-line were not as good last year. 169 yards per game. 4 individual 100-yard games by Corum (3) and Edwards (1). Most of Corum's 27 TDS were from inside the 5-yard line. They were not running up and down the field all year. When they added extra blockers on the line (PSU) is when it opened up for Michigan.

At 7:55, John Beck gave Brock Purdy the 2023 MVP award that was won by Lamar Jackson. Note: Jackson was the only All-Pro from the Raven's offense. Purdy looked at five All-Pros in the offensive huddle, he wasn't one himself.

JJ isn't the reason Michigan was winning. It was the rest of the team. Classic case of great team so the QB must be great too. Nope. Sometimes you get a Phil Simms. The best game manager in NFL history. Only 1 season where he reached 4000 yards passing. Only 4 seasons where he surpassed 20 TD passes. Yet he gets boosted for being on a team that happened to win a super bowls.

Look at his stats from last year. Look at his record as a starter. He's the best QB to come out of college in a while, even better than Andrew Luck, and I'm from Indiana. JJs the real deal!

This cat threw for 250+ in what 3 games, 1 vs MSU...... Common man. Stats don't lie, rings sure do(Elianning, Joe Flacco). He's an over hyped player on a #1 rushing/defense team.... Wasn't needed and when needed will fail. Joe Flacco or Eli Manning at best.

    • @chadd3299
      @chadd3299 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

Too myopic to see the flaw in your own logic. Wasn’t needed? When is a QB needed more than on 3rd and long? When it’s an obvious passing down and you have to convert otherwise the other team gets the ball back is when a QB is needed the most. You said stats don’t lie. On 3rd and 4 or more to go, JJ was:
      48/67 71.6 % 662 yds 6 tDs and 33 first downs.
Only 9 of his completions weren’t a TD or a first down . He is actually a big reason they were able to make it as far as they did because of his consistent ability to keep the chains moving on 3rd down. Your own logic just worked against you but you’ll come up with a way to discredit that because you just don’t like JJ.
      Edit: was also 7/8 87.5% for 82 yards 1TD and 7 first downs on 4th down 😂.
Nearly every single time they needed a drive to stay alive, he’d convert. Wasn’t needed? 😂

That you focused on yardage demonstrates that you really do not know much about football. Stats don't lie? By your estimation Joe Montana never should have played a down in the NFL. But regarding those stats -- Michigan pretty much dominated the first 10 games of the season, meaning that JJ almost never played in the fourth quarter. And still, he passed for about 3,000 yards.
