Note that Tina and I booked and paid for this trip; we do not get any compensation for this video or any sales at Beauty Way Jeep. We just wanted to do a tour and figure if we can help out a small business, then that's just an added benefit.
Canyon de Chelly is an amazing area with a great historical significance. At first it was home to the Anasazi and, more recently, the Navajo. There are thousands of archaeological sites within and around the canyon. You can visit the canyon two ways; first, there are several overlooks from the top. This is how Tina and I visited it years ago. (Note there are no fees to visit this way.) There used to be one trail that went into the canyon - The White House Ruins Trail - but when we were there this time it was closed. Not sure when/if it will re-open.
The second way to visit the canyon is to hire a Navajo guide. The canyon itself is still home to many Navajo families. So guides are required to protect the privacy of the residents as well as the historical sites themselves. We were fascinated by the ruins and the history, so when Lee reached out and asked if we would like a tour, we said absolutely.
If you have any interest in history, especially Native American history, Canyon de Chelly does not disappoint. And a guide is the way to go. Lee has lived here his entire life, so he knows all of the stories, trails and locations to hear and see. He explained how the ruins were constructed, why they were built where they were, the thought that went into the layout and construction, the meaning of the petroglpyhs and much, much more. He knew where to get the best photographs, what books to read for more information...it was all extremely interesting and informative.
If you haven't been to Canyon de Chelly, I highly recommend it. And I definitely recommend hiring Lee for a tour through the canyon itself. It's an absolutely incredible place.
One last thing; when you are planning, ask what the best season would be to go. In the winter when we were there, a lot of the trails were covered in snow and it was unsafe to hike. The water levels further up the canyon were also high so we couldn't explore all the way in. We are definitely planning to go back when there are better conditions.

Another shout out for Lee at Beautyway Jeep Tours! We completed our tour with Lee today and cannot say enough about the beauty, the history and Lee's expertise. The only way to get a real sense of the canyon. I highly recommend Lee as a guide.
Awesome, Please never open to the public. People don't show any respect. They'd ruin and destroy your history. Love what you have preserved. . 💞💞
What a sacred, magnificent and beautiful place to view! Thank you Lee!💕💕
Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto are truly hidden gems of the southwest. Was there right when Covid hit and the local Dine(Navajo) were very scared. All campgrounds were closed, I couldn’t even use the bathroom anywhere. The tours were closed. In saying that I had the entire place to myself the morning after a snow storm. The only person I saw was a local selling art. He told me the story of his family. I am now motivated to go back and see it see it from inside the canyon.
I have been there 3 times and it never gets old. In my opinion, Canyon de Chelly is one of the most magical place on this planet. I looove the Navajo culture and their land. Amazing video. Thank you❤
I've never been to the Canyon, but I'm fascinated by it, especially the Mummy Cave area.
hi, they are offering 3,4 or 5 hour tour which one you preferred?
@@amnikaur7386 I had a jeep tour and it was only 2 hours.
I need to go back. I was there in the fall of 2014. I also stayed at Spider Rock Campground, but in my camper van. That time of year the stream bed in the canyon was bone dry and the dust/sand was axle deep on the Jeep. I was certain we would get stuck, but our guide knew what he was doing. We were given white peaches plucked right from the tree.
After watching this video and preparing for my own trip to Canyon de Chelly, I booked a reservation with Beauty Way Jeep Tours. I had a fantastic time with my guide Andrea who provided loads of information about the area and the peoples who lived there.
Fantastic video. The scenery was incredible as were the dwellings. A tour is the way to go.
This brought back many pleasant memories. Durring a seven week tour of the national parks of the American Southwest. There have been more "Grand" parks included, however Canyon DeChelly was the most magical and we were treated best there.
We squeezed DeChelly in on our next to last day while enroute to the airport.
That’s so awesome my wife and I are going there next weekend I can’t wait to see it all for myself
Enjoy! Love Canyon de Chelly.
It makes so much sense to me for a Navaho to act as a guide in this beautiful place. Good for them to feel protective of this incredible land. Thanks for the video! ❤
I absolutely love this place. I try to go each year during the Thanksgiving weekend for 10 days. Horseback ride, Jeep tour to the ruins and Hiking. The native culture is kso awesome. Chinle is so peaceful and the night sky is off the chart. I look forward to visiting every year. Thanks to my baby for showing me this place. Love it.
Thanks for taking me on the tour.
Jerry, I am from Navajo land. Thanks for sharing.
I'm just glad you share it and let us experience it. So much amazing stuff out there.
Thank you for sharing. Navajo land is beautiful and it’s a very diverse terrain. Last summer was my first time visiting and learned so much about the place. I’d like to go back again. ❤
This was awesome. The private tour aspect would probably be seen as an inconvenience for many, but he seemed full of great stories and knowledge. Beautiful scenery.
We really enjoyed the information that Lee brought for this trip. Typically we just enjoy looking at the scenery, but after the first trip up here, I read up on a lot of the stories and found it fascinating. It was great to get his input as someone who grew up there and knew all the stories and culture first hand.
The ones who see it as an inconvenience would, not doubt, be the ones who would destroy it forever.
In 1966 I ventured forth and walked down to the base of the “WhiteHouse” Saw a few Navajo”s but for most part wild, I don’t recall safety rails by Spider rock.
Yes, keep this area away from the maddening crowd.
Thank you for taking us along on your journey, it is much appreciated.
She is freekin hilarious!! But definitely someone you don’t want to mess with. Love her.
I definitely agree on all points.
Thanks Jerry for showing us this important native American cultural site. As usual, your videography and choice of music is superb - you’re a good storyteller. Great work!
Thanks Jerry and Tina! Appreciate you taking me back to one of my most favorite places on Earth! I've been there four times and every time it's even more fascinating.
Was here last March, pretty lucky the day was very pleasant and sunny, wish we knew about the Jeep tour.... amazing!!!!
I loved Canyon De Chelly I didn't do the jeep tour but I hiked the entire canyon... It was awesome!
I bet the hike is incredible. We need to go back when it isn't so cold.
Loved seeing the Canyon again thru your lens…..we went there a year ago and took a private tour with Beauty Way Tours as well. Our guide was TJ Hunter. The trip was amazing to say the least and we would highly recommend it to anyone. Got one of my favorite pieces of Native America there from a local artist…..it is a silver and copper storyboard bracelet. We would enjoy going back another time. Your videos have inspired several of our trips and videos….thanks.
Spider Overlook was the perfect ending for this tour! (except maybe for the Navos taco!) THANK YOU 🙏
What a treat - a new video from Jerry and Tina. Love it. Made my day! The tour looks awesome.
Beautiful place as DINEH this is a peaceful place to be .
Great video, thanks for doing this. Like so many of your videos, learned about a new place to explore.
Wow. We were there and did the rim overlooks. But the history down in the canyon and the informative tour is worth while for a return trip. Love Navajo culture
What an amazing place! Thanks Jerry for another beautiful video. Cheers...
My brother and I visited Canypn De Chelly on a 2 week winter vacation in 1980. We stayed in the "motel" at the park.
Temperature 8 F. we were charged only $10 because there was no electricity available.. frozen equipment and power lines down.
We decided to explore the canyon and stopped at a large turn-out, parking lot over-looking White House.
As we arrived a VW with Vermont plates parked next us. A school teacher from Vermont.. Ethan, joined us in a trek down into the canyon.
Of course, it started snowing.
The trail was not so wide, slippery and full of surprises.
We got the bottom where the snow continued.. light, then heavy, then a break and clear skies.
There were no signs, no fences nothing but dead silence except for crows/ravens flying up and down the canyon about 10 feet in the air
and a 6 ft wide creek flowing beneath clear frozen ice. Spectacular and haunting at the same time. We explored the ruins and then made
tea and marveled at the wonder of the place.
Again, silence... except now we hear chanting from up the canyon.... soft and lyrical. As the sound got closer we saw a man
herding a flock of sheep down the canyon toward us and continued on singing louder.
About 100 yards down the canyon he guided the sheep into a tumble weed and rough wood post corral. He shut the gate and
turned toward us, waved and continued his journey down the canyon still voicing his celestial chanting.
We climbed the path to our cars where there was about 6 inches of snow on them.
Ethan motored on and we enjoyed a treacherous drive back to the visitor's center.
We were greeted by a Ranger who gave us a tour and a bit of history and said that he wished we
could visit the ruins and Spider Rock area but it was closed because of the dangerous weather and
impassible path down into the canyon.
We said nothing.
We set up camp in the motel room, and I mean camp... tent and sleeping bags and we cooked dinner with a Primus and a pot.
Whiskey was a welcome life saver.
We survived the night and motored on to our next adventure new Oribi (sp) and a record rain storm in Arizona....and all hiways closed.
That for another time.
Thanks for the video and a jog to the memory of an event of a lifetime.
Next visit we will take your recommendation and go on the Guided Jeep Tour
Awesome! On our first visit, Tina and I rented a hogan at Spider Rock Campground. Hiked to White House and a monsoon blew in with a haboob and all. Made it back to the hogan and it started snowing. Went to sleep that night with coal burning in the wood stove and woke to about 2" of snow. Such an amazing experience.
Definitely nice to get the jeep tour and see more in the canyon.
@@JerryArizona Some thing I left out..
we had our "tea party" in a kiva to get out of the weather. . That or get buried in the snow or fall off the path on the way back.
The word for the Canyon is "magical".
My mother and I visited this area several years ago. We took a Navajo guided day trip where we rode on a flat bed trailer. It was freezing. When we arrived to our destination, there were portable toilets available to use, pop-up tents where Navajo women making fried bread. It was delicious and a Iwonderful experience.
Absolutely fantastic video of this spiritual place.
Great video! Can't wait for our trip down there!
Great presentation. Tina always has a perfect answer for you!😀👍❄️
Great video. A compliment on your use of music. You stop the music when others talk. A lesson others could learn from. Salute.
Haven't seen it since I was 6 and didn't get to go on the tour then. Awesome to see an up close look!
This was great!
Thanks for sharing it with us.✌️
your swag is unlimited jerry!!!!
Seems to me, Spider Rock was featured in a movie named McKinnons Gold !
Agree with you 😊
Wow! That's definitely a trip I need to do with my son!
Thanks for doing this video.
❤
I’ve done this twice on horses and walked the trail down to White House. The Canyon is a really fantastic place!
It's incredible. Would be amazing to do on horse back.
Very nice. We have always wanted to visit this area. We will have to experience it firsthand.
It's a great spot. I highly recommend it.
I got a job in Chinle but due to some reasons , i could not join it. I wish i could visit the place someday. It is Simply awesome 👍
Wow; and I enjoy your choice of music too.
We did a tour with Beauty Way a few years ago and loved it. Where do you get your music for your videos? Pretty cool. 😊
Great video! Really makes we want to check it out and hire Lee as a guide.
Highly recommended.
Hmmm, I remember hiking down, not too far, a couple or few miles? There was a rope ladder that I had no upper arm strength for, so forded the river up to my chest. Once across we were able to visit the ruins, though most were protected with chain link fences. Amazing place. I can understand why one must accompany a guide to protect, but it saddens me that then this is only accessible to those who can afford it.
Yeah, but I understand it. People live there. So you have private property and important historical sites. I guess there was too much trespassing, looting, vandalism so limiting access was the only way to protect it.
No amount of videos or photos can really do this place justice. Was the most awesome place i've ever been to. Absolutely incredible. I saw the clouds melt there in '79. I'll never forget that as long as i live. Watch out for the spider!
The story about Spider Woman would definitely keep kids in line. Creepy as hell....but also understandable as a parent who's had many arguments about bed time with my kids.
@@JerryArizona We used to have the Boogy man, now the kids know it's a dance. Haha🙂
New subscriber. We enjoyed your video of our hometown. So much information with a guide, Lee is a neighbor of ours. (We moved to southern AZ a couple of years ago but go back to chinle often).
Lee was great. This place has so much history. After our first trip, we knew we had to go back and learn more. Much better with a guide.
Love this place so much…
Loved this!! Great to see from inside as I drove around the perimeter last July.
It's a whole different animal from the bottom. Wish we'd been there when the water levels were lower and we could've accessed more of the canyon.
Was there a couple of years ago, never thought about taking a tour assumed they just drove to Spider Rock. I was definitely wrong looks beautiful with snow
I think they do go that far in. Depends on the tour you take because there are canyons that branch off. We were limited because it was so wet when we were there. Lee recommended going later in the year.
amazing place. Will go back in a few months. Thank you! I took the east exit through the wooded area back to Gallup. Neat. Hiked down to White House Ruins once... 105 degrees. lol Not a good idea.
We've done the hike to White House too. It was closed when we were there this time and Lee said it may not re-open. Which is disappointing.
@@JerryArizona that IS disappointing.... I did the walk at "regular" temps a couple times, as well. ... and it was just great views. I do hope the A&W is still open!!
We took one of the trails from the top down to the bottom and back up. Awesome place. When we were several years ago, the camp sites were..........wanting.
We stayed in the middle sized hogan at Spider Rock and had an absolute blast. A monsoon kicked up a snowstorm while we were there. It was one of our favorite trips. This time....it was muddy and wet and a lot less inviting so we stayed at the lodge. Which was rustic and pretty awesome.
@@JerryArizona that sounds great. I wished we'd found those. It was a last-minute visit for us.
You got that correct, saying Navajo Tacos instead of Indian Tacos haha. Fellow Navajo subscriber here from AZ. Love all the content.
Just beautiful! May I ask what month did you take this tour? Thanks!
This trip was in March. I'd recommend going later in the spring when the trees get some leaves back, or in the fall when they're changing colors.
Hard to imagine people lived their lives in those canyons, but I guess they knew what they where doing. I tend to like my modern conveniences too much! Great tour. I’ll have to check them out sometime when I make it back to AZ…
I've been to Canyon de Chelly three times, first time in 1994, last time 2012, on both rims. Hiked down to White Houe Ruins twice. This place has a magical serenity that I cannot put my finger on. History indicates some very sad episodes. The Navajo were hunted by the army who massacred many of the tribe by firing shots into the alcoves where the tribe were sheltering. Kit Carson was the scout responsible for leading this massacre !
After our first visit, I read a lot of the history and came across the same stories. It was great to go into the canyon and hear those stories directly from a descendant. Amazing place with an interesting history. One of the craziest parts was when Lee took us to a wall with petroglyphs and pointed out paintings from the Navajo and then from the Anasazi and then another set that pre-dated both cultures.
Nice Job !!
What a place! May have to do a road trip down there 😄
so cool!
Hello Jerry! You're videos are amazing! I'm curious to know about the equipments you use for videography and taking pictures!
Keep making beautiful videos!
Best,
Krutik
Thanks! I use a Canon EOSR with a 35mm f1.8 and a gimbal and a GoPro 11.
Which tour did you do? 3hr, 4hr, ??? Thanks for doing this. We have been talking about doing it for awhile and just haven't gotten there. Hotel infor?
I believe we did the 5 hour tour. Definitely recommend the longer tour. And ask about accessibility in the canyon. It was pretty wet when we went so some areas were inaccessible. We stayed at Thunderbird Lodge, which was also rustic and convenient. The gift shop was really cool also.
Hi, How many hours tour was this?
I can't remember anymore. I think they do full and half day trips. You should be able to see the options and lengths on their website. There was still plenty to explore, but the water levels kind of limited where we could get to.
@@JerryArizona we done it last week, it was amazing
You said you were there in Winter, what were the dates? We're planning to go in Oct.
I think this was February? Not recommended due to snow/water and the trees don't have any leaves. October should be perfect though.
What tour did you take in the jeep. 3-4-5hour tour.
It's been a while and unfortunately I can't remember. I want to say it was around 4ish hours, but not 100% positive. There was still plenty to explore after we were done, but when we went the water levels were still too high to access all areas in the canyon. If the conditions are right and you're interested in the history of this place, I'd recommend a longer tour.
We were there many years ago.
We toured the canyon with our guide Benny who showed us the cave where he used to make goat cheese as a child.
It's really cool hearing the stories from the people who live there, isn't it?
I'm in, next time I'm in Arizona I'm going.
Definitely worth it. I love the place. Beautiful and so much history to explore.
Thanks Jerry & Tina, we now have a new place to visit! It looks amazing!!Can you tell me how long of a trip into the canyon did you take or which one 13:39 would you recommend (3,4 or 5 hour)?
I didn't have my GPS on and wasn't really paying attention to the distance. We couldn't go as far in as they can because the water levels were too high. I definitely recommend the 5 hour; there's just so much to see.
I love the Rez!
Same. So much history, scenery and culture to explore. I'm just happy they open their home to let us go and explore.
@@JerryArizona I spent about a year out there in various cities for my church. Shiprock, Tuba City, Chinle, and Many Farms. That was in the 90's. Still miss the people and of course the fry bread!
First finally
First it was chilly, then it was Chelly
Mesa Verde is amazing but not part of this.
We went right by it but didn't have time to stop recently. I really need to check it out. Canyon de Chelly is amazing though.
Eliminate music sound track. It’s such a sacred pace.
Oh, do you mean that the music isn't "indigenous"?
LOL!
- -
We’re going to have to stop following you…you’re adding too many places to our bucket list!
Ce serait encore mieux si on voyait un peu moins de gens et un peu plus de paysages.
To much bs
Music unnecessary and not very good
Get rid of the music, not much of a tour
One of my least favorites. Didn't like your choice of music. Thank you anyway.
