I was very fortunate to get the Eternia playset for Christmas 1986 and I absolutely adored it and every moment of playing with it. I never had any issues with the track breaking, but one of the gargoyles from the front entrance did break. All my parents had to do was write to an address that I think was in the instructions and they sent us a replacement piece for free. So I imagine that there were families that did the same thing to replace other broken pieces. As for frustrated parents, I honestly think my folks were as blown away by this playset as I was. We were all basically hypnotized by the monorail system for a while LOL.
I never had one as a kid. I can recall seeing them in stores as a kid and thinking I'd never own one. Then about 10-12 years back I bought a guy's whole childhood collection for $100. It was about 90-95% of the original line. A little dirty. But it was about 85-90% complete. And part of that was near complete Eternia. I had to buy reproduction tracks for it. And I was always told that even if you had the originals, don't ever put them together. They told me it was best to buy repro for display and save the old ones. The couple of pieces of track I had were basically disintegrating in my hands. Anyway It's proudly on display in my secret MOTU room at home.
My husband Steve from Retro Room not only had, but *STILL HAS* his original one from childhood. He was holding his breath watching you connect and snap in the monorail track 😂
AMAING VIDEO! 1) Your videos are always fantastic. 2) Since I got into MOTU vintage TH-cam content, everyone talks about how brittle the tracks and and BOOM! - you have the courage to show us what it looks like with running something on the track. Well done sir!
AMAZING! I will never put one of these together, not just due to the cost, but due to the fact that it seems like so much fiddling about that i know i’m not patient enough
It's so nice to see someone actually building eternia! Ngl I was kinda anxious the whole vid waiting for a piece to break and I'm so glad that didn't happen lol
This is inspiring....I have a complete (as far as I know) USS Flagg that I've been putting off building for nearly a decade. Its big, I dont want to know if anything is missing or broken, and I'm afraid to break anything. Seeing you build this makes me want to build my Joe playset too! Awesome job!
This is great to hear, that im not alone in waiting for the right time to put it together. It’s stressy and for something like the Flag you definitly need to reserve enough space for it to be displayed 😅 I feel like that playsets has even more clicks for sure on the deck!
I like the sculpt and paint deco on the vintage Eternia, especially Viper Tower, much more than the recently released Mattel Creations Eternia (though both are amazing). I remember getting the original playset for Christmas-it was $99 from K-Mart. As a kid, my mother, sister, and I were in K-Mart. It was near Christmas time. I was on the toy aisle and just happened to look up. There, on the top shelf in the MOTU section, were several Eternia boxes. Somehow, my mother managed to check out at the register without me knowing that she had it in the buggy. My sister stayed up for most of the night on Christmas Eve putting it together for me. Great memories!
@@EdsRetroGeekOut *laughing- I imagine they had to rest the box horizontally across the top of the buggy! Enjoyed your video-so surprised that the track was okay. Even back in the 80s, the track was brittle... just something about the particular plastic material that was used.
I've always wanted this set, but I think more importantly I want the box, that cover art is some of the best I've ever seen and that's saying something knowing how great motu artwork is.
In 1986, I DID get Eternia for x-mas and still have the box for it. I was also wearing Thundercats pajamas when I found it completely assembled next to the tree.
Such a cool set! I'd always thought the secondary towers connected to the other playsets, but I guess not. I was also unaware the new version had new features-I thought it was a straight-up re-release of the original MOTU toy, like when the original Fortress Maximus was reissued in the 2010s. Fascinating!
I watch a ton of videos in this genre but I've never seen a concept like this. Very cool, Eddie! Keep doing what you are doing you'll be at 100k subs in no time! Great video!!!!!
You did the best review of this place that I’ve ever seen no one else described any of that action part thumbs up man keep it up last time subscriber and that’s for a life time
I bought one a couple months ago and was too scared to use the track system. So I just 3D printed a new set. Works perfect now. Ed If you’re interested in a set let me know. Love the Channel.
Very cool. I never had one as a kid and wouldn't mind having one as an adult. Lol This vintage playset is almost impossible to find complete these days.
I was still in to MOTU when this came out, but even at that age I knew this was well out of the price range of what my folks could afford. Or even Santa and his relationship with my folks' paycheques lol. I do remember seeing it in stores and in catalogues though. I never knew anyone that had it. This was so immensely satisfying watching you put this together, especially using the old school manuals - thanks for sharing it! And gg on not breaking anything!
I heard something about mattel getting a break even at 40.000 but only ended up making 4000 🤔 then again it probably didn’t include the foreighn releases
Insane playset. Kinda glad it came out when I was well over MOTU. No emotional/childhood connection means I don't have any desire to pick one up, ergo I don't have to sell a kidney, lol...

Hey Ed great video like always and awesome playset dude! I have seen other collectors buy 3d printed monorails since the original ones break very easily.
I remember that my monorail would sometimes get hung up on one of the outer ends and it was because one of the supports that stuck out from the tower (can't remember which one) was loose and would therefore sag just a bit. You couldn't really see it visually but when you wiggled the supports, one of them wiggled too much LOL. Just something you might want to check.
