Finally, a video that spells it out perfectly. This is by far the best R5 overheating video I have seen. It has made my decision to buy this camera over the Sony A7sIII because I will be doing both photography and video work AND I prefer to have an external recorder/monitor. THANKS!
Thanks for this. I have had my R5 for 7 months now and I have *never* had an overheat warning. I shoot almost exclusively in 4K 60, but it’s never continuous… lots of starting and stopping, capturing outdoor action or indoor b-roll. And I am in a cool climate, even in summer. Even with the occasional 120fps (very quick), it’s been no issue at all for *my* particular shooting needs. I do not have an external recorder, so I’m always shooting to CFExpress. I do understand that there is always this possibility of overheating, but it just has not come up with the non-continuous way I shoot. I love the camera, though I am still just a novice at shooting video…
Very interesting, Panther Flow. That is awesome that you can shoot like that with no overheating (I'm jealous :) I do think there is some variability in some R5 models, and some tend to overheat more than others. It sounds like you got a great one. I love shooting with the camera, so I'm willing to put up with the random overheats. Thanks so much for the comment, I think it's great for people to hear different experiences with the camera. Have a great day!
@@DeafDirector I should add that I kept my FS7 just in case, and I *do* use it for long continuous shoots (I do online lectures). But that’s mainly for the 30-minute cutoff issue. If I could not use my FS7, I would probably just get the external recorder/dummy battery approach. When I got the R5, I expected I would still use my FS7 a lot, but I quickly realized how much more I enjoy the R5, and that I just don’t *need* to drag out my FS7. I *am* grateful for the firmware addition of Clog3, because that extra dynamic range was another benefit of my FS7 that I missed, but now I’m enjoying. But again, my disclaimer that I am just a novice at all this, so my opinions aren’t worth much 💁♀️ for professional use.
@@KathySierraVideo I was so happy with the CLog3 updated too. I think your experiences are just as valid as anyone else who gets to bang around on the camera, and it makes me happy to know that the R5 has some variability to it.
@@24framestime I am not really qualified to say, but my feeling in grading is that Clog3 is very very close to SLog3 on my fs7. I was disappointed in Clog but now with Clog3 super happy. I still like the 4K 60 on the fs7 a little better than the R5 4k 60, but I have a strong feeling it’s not the R5 but *me* still trying to work it out. I had the perfect zebra settings for my fs7 and I am not quite there with R5 and relying on the histogram 😳. Still… happy!
I shot a wedding on an R6, recorded externally with a Ninja V. Clips no longer that 40 seconds. Camera overheated 4 times that day and I missed a bunch of stuff. So I’m selling it now haha.
Thank you so much for these tests 💚 very helpful having numbers in length of time to consider. Recording 30fps in 4Khq on a gimbal today had me considering the R5C haha that overheat warning gives me anxiety
Just shot a portrait test using 8k, HQ, ALLi standard and IPB light standard. Then asked my photographer brother in a blind test to tell me which is which. I cheated a little and added a little more sharpening in Da Vinci on the IPB footage. Only one he got right was the HQ footage. To my eye at 100% there's isn't a big enough difference to worry. So if you have a long form interview just shoot standard IPB light. If you really really feel the need to deal with the huge file sizes of the higher quality formats go ahead.
PHOTOGRAPHY - I've had the *TEMPERATURE WARNING* icon appear several times on the EOS R5 while *shooting photos* only, no video. Same thing on both bodies. It has never prevented me from shooting but the user manual states there could be a slight reduction in image quality. Whether that's something you'll be able to see in the real world, I'm not sure. It does get really warm and the only way to avoid it is to power off the camera when not actively shooting. If I were shooting hybrid I'd be a bit worried about how much that increased temperature would cut into video recording length.
Thanks for the tip, Jared. I have never had the R5 refuse to take photos for me from overheating (which will definitely happen with video) when I'm doing photo shoots, but I think you are spot on for hybrid shooters. Believe it or not my old Canon 7D (1st generation) used to do the same thing. My experience tells me that if that heat warning comes on during photos, it would drastically reduce your video capacity. I really appreciate you sharing your experience. Have a great day
@@DeafDirector - One time I was shooting tethered (via USB) and it gave me the *temperature warning* icon after only about 30 minutes. I'm on the latest firmware and have shot tethered with it since then and not had any problems. To be clear, the *temperature warning* icon I'm seeing while shooting photos is the *white* icon, not the flashing *red* icon you get when shooting video. If the *red* icon were ever to show up while shooting photos I'd be really worried.
I want to echo what Jared says regarding the overheat warning and shooting stills only. I've received the overheat warning during a outdoor wedding just after the processional and it was extremely disconcerting to happen at such an important time. After a lot of research and some unscientific testing, it seems the stills-only overheating issue may surface as it relates to 1. electronic shutter 20 FPS RAW repeated bursts of 2-3 seconds (that would equate to 40 to 60 RAW image files being written to the CFexpress card per burst) AND 2. the little red standby-video button. It appears that even if you are shooting stills only, the little red standby video button is playing some role in the overheat warning showing up. I had my standby button mapped to 120fps FHD full auto thinking it might be nice for the occasional champagne-pop sorta thing. I thought the 120fps would be more than easy for the R5 to handle given I selected FHD vs 4K. Interestingly, when I changed my standby-video button to 60fps 4K, I've not received the overheat warning again even under the same stills shooting conditions (i.e., electronic shutter 20 FPS RAW repeated bursts of 2-3 seconds).
@@CDStudios Thanks so much for this info! This is definitely something I will try to look further into, I have just gotten booked for week long photo job in Montana at the end of the month, so I will be getting the chance to try and crush my R5 out there on a couple of 18 hour photo shoots. I will test what you said out. Have a great day!
Great to know, I was looking into getting it and I was debating getting it or not because I thought the overheating was affecting the photography and the video, I dont take long videos so knowing that I can take photos without overheating is great to know
finally FINALLY FINALLY A real life explanation to this whole overheating issue. I was about to jump over to sony but this has help me to stay in the canon eco system.
Great video! Very informative and clear to understand! Just curious if you were using the r5 when recording the vlogging style clips (walking around outside)? Cheers!
I am a wedding photographer and have two R5’s and only shoot stills. Both R5’s have displayed overheat flashing icon in the viewfinder but neither camera has shut down. Has anyone experienced this? I wish there was some way to turn off that irritating flashing icon
Hey Darrell, that flashing red icon does mess with your head. Unfortunately there is no way to cut it off. I'm curious, when you are shooting stills are you recording on the SD Card or a CFExpress? I know in my tests that the CFExpress cards seemed to be the overheat problem maker, but I'd be interested to see if you experienced this with only SD cards in. Thanks for the comment.
@@DeafDirector good point, I set my cameras to power off after 3 minutes but when I was hammering through the traditional photos I saw the red light flashing. Those CF express cards get very hot, I shoot full raw to both SD and CF but I will try shooting JPG files to the CF card and RAW to the SD card to see if that helps. Although the overheat warning flashed, the camera did not shut down. I powered off during my 20 minute drive to the reception and did not see the overheat icon at all the rest of the evening.
@@holl3308 Hey Darrell, I was a wedding photographer for several years, so I totally understand how much abuse our cameras go through during a wedding day. Please contact me back after you do that test, I am really interested in hearing what you experience. Thanks for the info!
@@DeafDirector Will do. As a side bar, I also have moderate hearing loss and screaming Tinnitus in my left Ear. I understand what you are dealing with.
I think you have some shooting mode on your custom dials, C1,C2,C3 where the camera might overheat. If you remove those custom modes the overheating signs could go away, I gues.
I shoot commercially with the R5 and your comments are absolutely true and spot on. Shooting yesterday at 100 FPS 1080 30 second bursts PAL format internally as Ninja will not record 100fps… Overheated 🥵 after about an hour.
Hey, love the videos and their honesty. Just curious with your different tests a lot of time they’re shooting a still background. Do you think shooting more real life-like scenarios with subjects moving and autofocus having to work heat things up even quicker? I’m likely holding out for the R5C (assuming it doesn’t lose any/much of the stills capabilities. Will probably be tempted to go for the “cheaper” R5 since I’ll be using it for stills more than video.. decisions decisions.
That's a great question, and I have actually done a test of that as well. The short answer is that I have done this test for hours with autofocus hunting and I had no overheat issues. You can go to 8:15 in the following video to check our the results. th-cam.com/video/DbyqBGKd_WM/w-d-xo.html
This is super helpful since I'm super close to buy canon r5. My usage has is 60/40 in favor for photography side. I'd love to create a short cinematic videos for my 2 kids and a bit of travel videos. From photography standpoint, One huge "barrier" for me getting to r5 has been the Sony a7iv. I don't exactly need 45mp but the 20mp on the R6 is too low for me. Sony a7IV is 33 and that's such a perfect spot. Dynamic range as I gather, sony and nikon still leading the race here. Auto focus is the same for Canon and sony. Color wise, if it were sony a7iii, canon is a clear winner. However a7iv has improved the skin tones considerably. I'd like to call this a tie for my own use. Video aspect at first I thought canon KILLED sony a7iv and this was tipping the scale for me toward canon. Until I saw some videos about the overheating. But I gave benefit of the doubt since I figured those issues has been handled by firmware. But now your video came along and giving this fact. I have a huge problem with this now. I watched from multiple sources telling me that unless I shoot 4k HQ, the standard 4k is better on the R6. Adding to the fact that the Sony a7iv 4k is better than the r6, this put the normal 4k on the r5 a disadvantage over the Sony a7iv. And of course based on your video, the non overheating mode on the r5 is the standard 4k. The only upside for Canon for me so far is that a7iv 4k60p is cropped. I don't like crop. But I intend to use 4k60p for slow motion, so I might get around it by using 1080p120p I guess. I live in southeast Asia and 38-40* Celsius is our daily life. So I'm sure I won't get the benefit of some of the you tubers thst lives in Canada. That video side also made worse by basically the codec.. I tested the sample video and my pc basically got murdered by the file. Coupled by the fact that these humongous files will force me to buy a lot of new HDD and the cost of the darn CFEXPRESS card.. I maybe too naive thinking that canon r5 is for me. Maybe if I have unlimited budget... Those rf glass are crazy expensive too.. Sigh.. I guess during writing all of these, I found my own answer to my dilemma. What do you think? Should I stick with canon r5? Thanks for a great video! I promise you a permanent subscriber if you even care to take 1 minute to read my wall of text and comment on it.. Hahahaha Cheers!
It's definitely a tough choice with all of the great cameras out there. I think it really comes down to how you envision your main use for the camera. Let me start off by saying that, as far as photography goes, this is by far my favorite camera. The ergonomics are great, the images are beautiful and I love how much dynamic range I can pull out of this. If photography is your main goal, you'll probably be happy. As far as video, I shoot standard 4K in 24fps for professional commercial applications all the time, and the camera has never overheated on me in this format, even when I leave it on for 12+ hours at a time. While 4KHQ is sharper, none of my clients have ever noticed I shoot in standard 4K. If you want to shoot 4K/60 you will have to watch the overheating. I find that enabling "Standby: Low Res" on the camera lets me shoot for much longer at 4K 60fps. I personally love the camera, but because it is such a big investment, and you have a lot of vaild points about this and other cameras, I would recommend renting it for a few days, and really trying it out, to make sure it is the one for you. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
@@DeafDirector I am so glad to read your reply. If a professional like you can deliver a project to a client at standard 4k and be happy, then it should be more than good enough for me. Beside.. Personally I love the body styling since I've used 4 sony cameras each generation, I'm kind of sick of their styling by now. Coming from the esthetically pleasing leica M240, this is also often a neglected fscotr that people often forget. Some design evoke a desire to pick up the camera and create pictures, while the others are boring coldless machine that doesn't inspire you to pick it up and go out making pictures. Also a thought came to me last night, this camera is so future proof especially for me that I will have more pride and assurance that when a new camera comes out it won't be outdated that fast. Anyway, before I ramble on too long again, thank you for the kind reply. I've made my decision today. I'm going with canon r5. If I get the Sony, I know that in the back of my mind constantly, I'll be curious and keep wanting to try canon r5. So I'll just go for the top first. You got yourself a new sub Cheers for the amazing videos and good luck in he future!
Great stuff, I concur. However I recently began experiencing overheating even with my Atomos Ninja V...I was shocked. I was shooting 4K DCI HQ, 24FPS and it overheated in a 75 degree ambient temp garage and the warning came up then shut off. Did not have cards in either. I'm on firmware 1.3.1. Low res standby mode off (they removed the high temp warning and replaced it with Low Res Stand by mode). The whole reason I bought the Atomos Ninja V because I was sold on the premise that it doesn't overheat at 4k HQ. Thoughts? Also, Which hdmi cable are you using for your atomos for 60fps? Thank you!
I do food photography, nature/landscape photography, and food and travel videos. I've been looking at the R5 to upgrade from my 5D Mark II and I'm on the fence due to the overheating issue, the new R5C is out of my budget and I can't find any info on whether that one overheats either since it's so new. I feel like for the price, Canon should have made adjustments to remedy this, like Kolari's fix just built right into the camera. Would a computer cooling mat work to help keep the camera cool between video takes in-studio? This would only work in the studio obviously, but if it works might be a good option for my recipe videos (wouldn't work for my travel/nature videos). Great video by the way, very helpful!
Hey Sarah, as far as the photography aspect goes, the R5 will never overheat. I have put it through some long and brutal days with no problem. As far as video goes, there are actually a lot of modes where you will not have to worry about overheating. For instance if you shoot in Standard 4K at 24fps or 30fps, the camera will never overheat. Same goes for 1080. The only areas you will have to be careful with are 4K 60fps, 4KHQ, all 120fps footage and 8k. I frequently use the 4K 60fps function on my camera and the 4KHQ and can work very comfortably throughout the day, as long as you follow some smart practices. I've made a number of videos that should help in regard to this. Because of this, I (personally) don't feel you need to add any mods to the camera to get it to work great for you. If you do a lot of video, you may consider adding an Atomos Ninja V eventually, but this is not a requirement. I personally made the jump from the 5DmkIV to the R5 and I have absolutely loved the transition. Good luck on the shooting and have a great day!
Quick question: Now that you have the option to have LCD display lowres video if not recording internally while simultaneously outputting 8k/5k raw or 4kHQ through HDMI to recorders, can you use LCD for touch AF etc while recording externally without needing to shut down the display? Specifically after Firmware version 1.4?
This is a really good question because I have the R5 and I'm videographer first and hate that the R5 still overheats even when I have it connected and recording with the Ninja V
I'm a hybrid shooter. Lots of short clips. But next weekend I'm filming a beach volleyball tournament in SoCal and I'm worried about the heat. Fingers crossed. Taking my 6k Pro as the main camera to shoot all the 4k 60 but I'll use my R5 for the photos, lowest 4k for the vlog and occasional 4k 120.
Hey Brandon, you can easily shoot in standard 4k 24fps and photos all day with no problems, but be prepared that 4K 120fps will overheat on you pretty quick. Good luck!
in one of the last videos you said the 4K and the 1080p is the same quality...now you say that the 4K is stunning quality...if so i could use only the 1080p and no issues at all, also no proxys anymore
Hey Carsten, I appreciate you keeping me honest! The latest firmware update that Canon released with the IPB-Light codec, really forced me to rethink some of my shooting principals. The quality between the 1080 and 4k on a 1080 timeline are virtually identical, but if I shoot standard 4K in IPB-Light the file sizes are so small (actually smaller than 1080 in ALL-I) that I do not burn through all of my card space and I have the option for punch ins on a 1080 timeline or give my clients native 4K finals as well. This new codec really changed how I shoot with the R5. I also found that once I went into more real world situations, (outside of the studio) with things like the motion blur from a 180 degree shutter, and after I graded the final images, that the differences between 4K and 4KHQ were not as drastic as static shots in the studio. Thanks so much for the comment, and I hope you have a great day!
@@caseybachmeyer Yeah, I did a bunch of tests on it, and I can barely tell a difference. It has definitely changed how much I can shoot on a day, and its great getting that extra resolution with no penalty.
My R5 and Ninja V do not play well together when recording 60fps. It produces choppy slomo, any insight? Using atomos 2.0 hdmi and western digital blue ssd. Atomos support hasn't been able to figure it out.
Wow, Finally I review I believe. A game changer for sure. Can you tell me, do you know if the R6 is bad in this overheating problem. I shoot 90 minute comedy shows in 4K. I blows my mind canon would release a camera so so so flawed.
My R5 is overheating only doing photography. Im a motocross photographer. This weekend is a huge event race and its constantly overheating and its been having shitter lag that I dont usually have.
So sorry to hear that. Is your camera actually shutting down, or are you just getting the very unnerving overheat warning indicator? I used to have this problem and found that there is actually a pretty easy fix for this. I made a video about it. th-cam.com/video/O9oMGg37RM4/w-d-xo.html. Once I did this, I have never had an overheat warning in photo mode on my R5 ever again. I hope it helps. Have a great day!
Unfortunately the R5 and R6 aren't reliable for long interviews or streaming. I've had it shot down a few times during important live streams. Your better off buying a dedicated video camera or a camera with great syncs.
Hey Mikey, you're right when you say the R5 can be unreliable at times. I've been able to get hour plus interviews in standard 4K, using a dummy battery, but if I ever had anything like a live stream, I would definitely bust out a dedicated video camera or my old trusty Panasonic GH5. Thanks for the comment!
Canon never asked you to use Canon R5 to record long interviews. There are clear instructions and honest disclosure on recording limits .there are plenty of other options available as dedicated video cameras . Stop being silly guys
@@bollywoodmauritius Ironically, I have absolutely no problem shooting long interviews with the R5. The problem that led me to make this video was the overheating problems I was getting at recording clips that were a minute or less. When I was shooting 4K 60fps BRoll for projects, and keeping all of my clips at less than a minute, I was consistently getting the camera to shut down on me at less than 20 minutes of shooting. I am not knocking the R5 (I really, really like it), but I wanted to make a video highlighting my issues, and I wanted to show people some workarounds that I found to help me maximize the camera. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and I hope you have a great day!
@@DeafDirector When you were having those overheating issues shooting less than a minute long clips, were you recording with a CFExpress inside the camera or to the ninja?
@@24framestime Internal CFExpress recording gave me the most problems with High Frame Rates. Once I took the card out and used just the Atomos V I could get much longer times. You have to have the card physically out of the camera for best results.
Appreciate the info sir... I too use the R5 for Videography as well as the R6. If I want to be cautious I shoot 1080p. The 10 Bit capability looks impressive to me in 1080p mode... when I shoot in 4k mode I exclusively use the Atomos Ninja V... I live in Atlanta and haven't run into the Overheating issue yet, plus I find the Atomos ProRes files are way easier to work with in Premier versus the internal 4k files. This method works for me thus far.... until I can afford a straight up cinema camera :)
One thing to expand upon as far as Safe Modes is that not only will it not overheat in 24p Crop Mode, but because it's downsampled from 5.1K to 4K, it comes so close to the quality of 4KHQ that even when pixel peeping you won't see a difference. As long as you're not needing an extremely wide angle shot you can stay in this mode to shoot all day and only switch to HQ when you need to go super wide or for high frame rates.

I meant if you write to the internal memory card. And one more question, will there be overheating when shooting 8k video to an external recorder Atomos Ninja V 5?
Hey Alex, I recorded everything on IPB-Light internally. I find this to be a great Codec and I thought it would give the R5 a few more minutes before it overheated. All footage was shot in 24fps and in CLog 3 which means 10 bit, (170mbps). Great question, thanks so much for the comment!
Thanks for this. You mentioned that shooting in high frame rates can be an issue. Does this include 1080p/60fps or 1080p/120fps, or only 4K and higher? Thanks.
@@DeafDirector Interesting. So referencing another one of your videos regarding overheating in photo mode caused by custom video modes ... my C3 is set to 1080p/120fps. Could that be the cause of getting that overheating warning in photo mode? Thanks.

We are certainly in an era of incredible choice. I think photographers who need a great photo camera with a solid hybrid would find the R5 very useful. It's frustrating to have Canon get sooo close to the perfect hybrid camera, only to have these little issues pop up.
I didn't test that, but I was able to get it recording for over 3 hours in an unairconditioned garage that was 89 degrees. The Atomos gets hot, but it never stopped going.
R5 overheating at 96 degree (ambient temps) yesterday on a stills ad shoot in Denver. NOTHING BUT STILLS and it overheated all day. This is with firmware upgrades. So I don’t think the claim that the R5 only overheats when shooting video is accurate.
Hey Robert, quick question. Did the camera overheat to the point of not being able to shoot, or did you just get overheat warnings all day? if it was just the warning, I made a quick video about fixing the overheat warning that might help.th-cam.com/video/O9oMGg37RM4/w-d-xo.html
LOVE my R5 ! However, I "ONLY" do photography, and my camera was giving the overheating warning on my last trip out, in 50F weather ! I'm suspecting its because my camera is staying awake constantly, because I'm holding it, and moving around. Which not only builds heat, but kills batteries quicker too. Need to look into some different sleep options. Was hoping this vid would explain those.
The Canon R5 should never overheat on you if you are doing only Photography. I think what you may be experiencing is a heat warning from one of your default video modes. The camera is basically letting you know that if you switch over to a video setting the camera could overheat. I made a video explaining this that I think will set your mind at ease. th-cam.com/video/O9oMGg37RM4/w-d-xo.html. This matches my experience as well. If you use a dummy battery and have no cards in R5, and record to Ninja 5. I have been able to go over 2 hours with no overheating.
Hey Rocky, it is so good to hear that you have had a similar experience. I have found that even with a dummy battery, if I have the CFExpress Card in, I will get overheat warnings, but if I remove it, I can go a long time. Thanks so much for the comment, and I hope you have a great day!
Pro tip: If you want to save space on your card and are planning to shoot in standard 4K, just shoot in 1080p, looks exactly the same, to a fraction of the space.
Ha, ha, that's a good tip. I actually did an earlier video about 1080 video on the R5 saying the same thing! Here's one more tip that I've found with the newest firmware upgrade. Standard 4k files in IPB-light are actually SMALLER than 1080 files in ALL-I. It lets you save space and get higher resolution at the same time. Thanks for the comment and I hope you have a great day.
Bit disappointed by this review. First, everybody knows you shouldn’t have the LCD closed down against the camera body, as LCD IS the number 1 factor for overheating and having it against the body prevents heat dissipation. You should have had it opened outwards. Then I don’t understand why you tested 4K60 removing the CFexpress card and got good results and didn’t try the same with 4KHQ? HDMI recording to the Atomos WITHOUT the CFexpress removed from the body! That would have been more interesting! And you could specify which firmware you are running? what about using a battery grip? To me it really is quite a useless review, I had better expectations, it’s a bit of a letdown…
Hey, that is a great point. The reason why I didn't run that specific test is for two reasons. The first was that in the 4K 60p test, even though the overheat warning came on with the card in, the camera itself NEVER overheated and shut down. I thought this was a pretty telling component, and one of the main differences with 4KHQ, which DID shut down. The second (and main) reason was that in my real life experiences out in the field, even when I am using a dummy battery with no card, the 4KHQ still shut the camera down at almost the same point as the one in my test. It took me almost two full days to do all of these tests (due to giving the cameras significant recovery times), and due to the fact that my (non-TH-cam) work schedule got very full, I decided that because the test results verified what I had seen (even without the card)that doing another test that would yield almost identical result, wasn't worth it. Simply put; I ran out of time to do this last test. (I tried to put a note in the video at 11:01 about this) All that being said, I think you are absolutely right to point out this info would have been good to share in the video, so sorry for missing that. I appreciate you contacting me to let me know you would have liked to see that. If it's any help, when I am out in the field, using dummy batteries and no cards in camera, the 4KHQ overheats and shuts down about 40 minutes in. Thanks so much for the comment, I really love getting feedback and I will continue to strive to improve the content and the channel, and I hope you have a great day!
@@DeafDirector thank YOU so much sir for talking my comment into consideration. 🙏 I just want to point out again that having the LCD flipped back against the camera body probably is not the best for heat dissipation and I regret you had it set up that way for the test. I don’t know if you actually use it that way in the field though but that would be an added and probably the main reason for overheating though. I really want to thank you for the amount of time of efforts you took to bring us this review as I’m myself really debating whether or not to buy an R5 right now to shoot with an External Ninja V+ recorder on days long shoot, but your review really scared me a bit I must say. 😱
@@24framestime You definitely got my wheelhouse turning. Stay tuned, you just might be seeing a series of tests comparing the heat from the LCD screen vs the CFExpress card coming up in a few weeks. Have a great day!
With all due respect... You claim that the R5 will not overheat in still photography ~~ maybe you don't have enough time under your "usage belt" but... It DOES Overheat... AND, it has done it to me for 3 straight days... FACT!!! ~~ Please, help yourself and do more research...
Hey George, thanks for letting me know. I guess I've been lucky, I've used it on 12-16 hour shoots and never had it overheat on me down here in Georgia weather, but it sounds like there are people that have been encountering it. I have been doing a lot more testing since this video came out, mostly due to great suggestions from people like you. It seems to me the biggest culprit in overheating is the LCD screen. Just a question, do you leave it on while you are doing photography or are you cutting it off and only using the EVF? I'm also wondering if you are doing a lot of burst photography. I would love to hear back from you, so I can get a better understanding of why your R5 is overheating so much. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and I hope you have a great day!
@@DeafDirector ....... Yes... The screen on and Lots of Burst... But, there may be another culprit Check the below video youtube link... th-cam.com/video/K6vWTh_cTx4/w-d-xo.html
You can record unlimited standard 4K with no problem. I just did a 14 hour shoot in standard 4K with absolutely no problem. You can also use an Atomos Ninja V+ to get unlimited recording at the highest 4K and in 8K RAW, too. I think the point is to give you access to an incredible 8K sensor in an affordable package. Have a great day!
Hey Chubbs, I've really enjoyed shooting the R5, and I was just letting people know what my own personal experience has been with it. It felt disingenuous to talk about the camera as much as I do and not address this, as it affects me on almost every shoot I do. I really appreciate all the feedback that I have gotten, yours included, and I'm not trying to get anyone mad or upset. Please understand that I'm just a tiny fish in this giant TH-cam universe, and I'm sorry if my minuscule channel caused you angst. That was not my intention. I appreciate you taking the time to send me a comment and I hope you have a great day.
Not a waste of time for those of us who find a recap after 8 months of usage very helpful. Much more informative than the initial videos about over heating.
this is the best R5 overheating issue clip Thank you Thank you
Finally, a video that spells it out perfectly.
@@KathySierraVideo Which has the best dynamic range? Your FS7 slog3 or the R5 Clog3?
I shoot weddings in florida. Both photography and video. Right now I'm using two R's. Should I upgrade?
FYI, the warning icon I received was the red flashing one... gah.

Those 100 and 120 fps are brutal on the R5. Thanks for the comment!
Hahahaha
Cheers!
You got yourself a new sub
Cheers for the amazing videos and good luck in he future!

Good luck!
@@DeafDirector I’ll report haha but I hope the 6K does it’s job if so, I should be fine
Superb video on Canon R5's overheating issue. Many of my questions got answered in this video. Thanks a lot. (Nov 2024)
in one of the last videos you said the 4K and the 1080p is the same quality...now you say that the 4K is stunning quality...if so i could use only the 1080p and no issues at all, also no proxys anymore
@@DeafDirector thanks a lot! So you mostly use now 4K IPB light?
@@caseybachmeyer Yeah, I did a bunch of tests on it, and I can barely tell a difference. It has definitely changed how much I can shoot on a day, and its great getting that extra resolution with no penalty.

Wow, Finally I review I believe. A game changer for sure. Can you tell me, do you know if the R6 is bad in this overheating problem. I shoot 90 minute comedy shows in 4K. I blows my mind canon would release a camera so so so flawed.
Freaking thank you!!! I wanted to know if 4k 23.98p has overheating problems! might just get it now
My R5 is overheating only doing photography.
Thanks so much. Your strategy sounds solid. Great to hear from another filmmaker so close to my home base of Athens, Georgia! Have fun shooting
So true, Raymond. I love to use the cropped 4k for my close-up angle during interviews. Super sharp and I never have to worry about overheating.
I do exactly this! Shoot all day with the sigma 18-35 in crop mode and it's MONEY!

Thank you for sharing. What are you using for an external power source or is it possible to connect to a vmount
I'm using V-Mounts with a Tilta Base and Canon Dummy batteries. Have a great day
@@DeafDirector Cool beans. are the dummy batteries voltage regulated?
@@GabrielScindian I use the Tilta Dummy battery which is Voltage regulated
Thanks for this. You mentioned that shooting in high frame rates can be an issue. Does this include 1080p/60fps or 1080p/120fps, or only 4K and higher? Thanks.
All 120 fps will lead to overheating, even in 1080. I am actually not sure about 60fps in 1080. I've always shot 60fps in 4K on the R5
@@DeafDirector Interesting. So referencing another one of your videos regarding overheating in photo mode caused by custom video modes ... my C3 is set to 1080p/120fps. Could that be the cause of getting that overheating warning in photo mode? Thanks.
@@ofthewayministries I would say that sounds like the most likely culprit. Have a great day!
Have you looked into compression affecting overheating?
In my tests different compression settings had a minimal effect on overheating.
Canon crippled the R5 with the overheating.
I have been testing the R5 now all week and I align with these. Luckily I have the Atomos, and getting the V+ soon. But, I think its a perfect B-Cam. Or like you said. If its your only cam... get a Ninja
Can someone please tell me why my Canon R5 is overheating even when attached to the Ninja V? There are no memory cards in, and I wasn't even recording. I'm sitting at my desk in my cool house, watching youtube videos like this one to help me set this thing up with my camera. The Ninja V was the reason I decided to go with the R5. Everyone says that the Ninja V solves the overheating problem but my R5 is still overheating. What am I doing wrong?
Make sure you turn Standby Low Res to ON: if you are shooting RAW. Here are some follow up videos I did that I think might help you. th-cam.com/video/IM3ulAK5f8k/w-d-xo.html. Good luck!
With so many choices out there, including Canons own, why would you bother with workarounds?
We are certainly in an era of incredible choice. I think photographers who need a great photo camera with a solid hybrid would find the R5 very useful. It's frustrating to have Canon get sooo close to the perfect hybrid camera, only to have these little issues pop up.
Does it overheat in Standard 4k 24fps in outdoor sunny conditions 95+ degree days?
Great video, thanks!
Can anyone say if this work on the R6?
I hope this helps you enjoy the amazing photo capacities of the R5 without worrying about that stressful overheat warning. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
@@DeafDirector Yes ! I found your other video explaining this, and turned down my "overzealous settings" that I had saved to one of my custom preset modes :) Confident now that will no longer be a problem :) TYSM :)
@@DeafDirector Does this also apply if one of the custom modes is set to 1080p/120fps (as high framerates can have overheating issues/warning)? Thanks.
Very helpful video.
And nice digs.
Thanks so much!
Thank you sir, great explanation/demonstration.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the comment, have a great day!
@@DeafDirector you’re welcome. I just watched your AF comparison video, great stuff. You’re an engineer at heart with a creative eye, good combo!
Very Detail Video !
This was very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks, Dan! I appreciate it

Bitrate / Mbps , no canon log on !

4K (59.94p/50.00p) ALL-I: Approx. 940 Mbps
4K (119.9p / 100p) ALL-I: Approx. 1880 Mbps
Canon is a photographic camera mirroles , and it is not a film camera , if you use it sparingly it will never get hot , it gives you a high mb / s rate , that is a lot of quality for a mirroless camera , no camera on the market and able to record this amount of bitrate , many people watch the video without seeing the camera specs
It is an absolutely incredible camera for photography! The first time I ever took it on a professional photo shoot I felt like this is the camera I've been dreaming of for over 20 years. The video capability is impressive, too. I just wanted to make sure people out there had realistic expectations. Thanks so much for the comment and have a great day!
Mine overheats just taking photos. Not even doing video.
Hey Kyle, are you getting the overheat warning or does the camera shut down. I made a video about the warning that might help you. Have a great day! th-cam.com/video/O9oMGg37RM4/w-d-xo.html
Buy a sony A1 JOB DONE..
(I tried to put a note in the video at 11:01 about this)
All that being said, I think you are absolutely right to point out this info would have been good to share in the video, so sorry for missing that.
@@DeafDirector thank you, have a great day too!
Very interesting point about the screen. Totally make sense on paper. I should try it.
But, there may be another culprit Check the below video youtube link...

totaly trash,.....whats the use of buying expensive 8k,4k cammeras that only guarantee comfortable recording at 1080 ....
The truth?
Overheating?
Why waste your time and ours on another Canon R5 overheating video? There is a reason why your videos don't get any views.
He didn't waste your time. You made the decision to watch this and then wasted even more time by commenting. Is your wife named Karen?
