A couple of weeks ago I used my R6 to stream a concert (and record to a BMD VideoAssist), the camera was running for 90+ minutes (exept one short break to switch batteries) without overheating... I can´t remember exactly what timer I set for the LCD, I think it was 3min. I did some tests before and repeatedly got recording times of 70-80min on a single battery. For the actual event I used the batterygrip with two LP-E6NH.
What is happening here is; Not because of heat creation from EVF, LCD panel, nor CFexpress card. Those are very minimal and can be disregarded. What is really happening here is by doing those, you are reducing the load on the eos R5's processor. -When you don't record internally, there won't be any load on processor for CFexpress card write procedure. -When you disable the EVF and LCD panel, there won't be any signal process need from sensor to show any information to EVF and LCD panel. -When you externally record the video through HDMI port, the processor will only be needed for bare minimum process needed to pass through the data collected from the sensor to the recording device. AF is very efficient and adds very small load on the processor. Less load on the processor and disabled EVF, LCD panel and not using an CFexpress card also increases the battery usage time.
Thanks so much, for the insight. That makes a lot of sense. My main goal was to try and show people a practical way to get longer ways of recording. I love that there are so many great people out there, like you, that help contribute to the conversation. Have a great day!
Love the Chanel. But, can you do something about using manual lenses with the r5 like Rokinon lenses for video, photo and also the best settings for that set up. Thanks
Quick question: Now that you have the option to have LCD display lowres video if not recording internally while simultaneously outputting 8k/5k raw or 4kHQ through HDMI to recorders, can you use LCD for touch AF etc while recording externally without needing to shut down the display?
This is a great question. The new lowres option is really awesome and I have noticed a dramatic difference when I've been shooting with it. I am currently doing some tests with it now, and hope to have a video out on it in the next few weeks. Have a great day!
@@DeafDirector On that note, if you were to be familiar with Resolve as your NLE and intended to keep it that way, what would you transcode those ProRes RAW files into, and how? Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
Thank you for the tests and your time you put to make the video! I think that's it's not EVF/LCD gives overheat. I think that's the camera's CPU involved in overheating. Makes sense when you record internally a camera's CPU processes all of the data, compresses in codecs. But when you do external recording the external recorder does all of the job and using just the sensor (+lens, etc) of the camera. IDK, i'm not an engineer, but kinda makes sense for me. What do you think?
I think you make a good logical point there. I'm not an engineer either, so it's been fun to try and put these tests out there in the real world and see what works and doesn't. Thanks so much for the comment!
I’m back with News of the Ninja 5 + and 8K I told you I’d be back! 8k recording now works with the firmware updates! I am testing how long I can get it to go without overheating!
Ha, ha, funny you should say that, I made an earlier video where I talk about that. You can go to "The Mount" section. th-cam.com/video/n_9pziurhIA/w-d-xo.html
Hi, even with the Ninja V+ you won't get 8K RAW external recording. HDMI 2.0 ports can't transfer that much data, nor can Sata SSD drives realistically provided the required write times. Even the internal recording of 8K RAW to CF Express B cards is limited to cards with the fastest sustainable write speeds (check the canon compatibility list to see just how limited this is). The Atoms recorder and canon updates will be outputting PRO RES RAW - a codec that provides a compressed format which preserves a lot of the RAW data, but it is not RAW. This compression does reduce the data volume and will (in theory) allow the R5 to output over HDMI 2.0 ports and compatible cables (those rated for high sustained write speeds) to be recorded on an SSD SATA drive (although Atomos have yet to release a list of compatible drives for any mode let alone 8K recording - expect only the fastest and durable drives to be able to do this, but Atomos support are currently ignoring my mails asking for updates). What the Ninja V records to SATA SSD is capped to 4K at 60fps and 4K HQ up to 30fps. It is also not recording this in RAW, as the Canon R5 doesn't output RAW 4K in any mode internally or externally only 4:2:2 10-bit, i.e. it'll be compressed using whatever codec you have selected. Aaaaaaanyway, the only way to currently record 8K in any mode with the R5 is internally. This will not change for 8K RAW, but maybe for 8K footage compressed by codecs.
Just to give a bit of background. I have an R5 and a Ninja V+. The Ninja V+ currently offers Canon R5 users nothing more than the Ninja V. Until Canon release the firmware update (slated for sometime later this year), this will not change. Interestingly, if you thought the Canon R5 ran hot, the Ninja V+ gets hot enough to melt the rubber seals off monitor mounts (plural). I imagine it's also radically reducing the lifespan of my drives. Suffering some serious buyer's regret and more than a little peeved at Atomos for releasing a half-finished product and providing zero support in the interim.
Yeah, that’s it. The file size will be massively decreased but PRO RES RAW is widely known for being good to work with (comparatively). My system died horribly when I tried to force feed it 8K Canon RAW. Have yet to try the addition of RAWLITE. Looking forward to the PRO RES RAW “upgrade” to the canon forward, but not holding my breath.
I actually noticed some random short image freezes during recording in all modes to the Ninja V+ when run and gunning, nothing you can notice when shooting a static background I guess…
I talk about my experience with both the R5 & R6 here being used to record directly to a computer (which is essentially the same method as shooting a Ninja Atomos) for several hours on end, but while using a dummy battery through a battery grip instead of regular batteries. th-cam.com/video/PNddf4wyjAQ/w-d-xo.html
Great question. Well, I unequivocally love the R5 for photography and it has been amazing for my commercial photo work, so I'm really glad I've got it. On the video side, it is so, so close to a perfect camera, but the overheating is a major issue that has beat me up on set a few times. I've really loved the Sony A7s3 for video, but I'm not a huge fan of Sony for photos or ergonomics, and I've really enjoyed the fantastic video from the Panasonic S1h, but it's autofocus is still terrible. I would probably still buy the R5, just for the photography alone, but I can guarantee you, I am waiting quite anxiously for the Canon R5c. Thanks so much for the comment, and I hope you have a great day!
