Due to the resignation of former SNP MP Margaret Ferrier there is a by-election on the way in Scotland. It looks like Labour might steal the seat which could be a sign of things to come in Scotland at the next general election.

The politics of the early 2020s feels like they can be very easily summarised by "winning by not losing as fast as your enemies" right now. From the British death-spiral of policy to the Finnish Far Right party's scandals to the Spanish failiure to form a government putting the power into Catalan Hands, it seems the best thing to do in politics right now is be an Alternative option.

Speaking as a Scot, you vastly overestimate our importance in general elections. You've neatly picked the two times in the 70s where our vote *did* make a difference in a razor-thin contest; otherwise, Scotland has had the (usually Tory) government that the English have voted in (as have the Welsh and Nirish) since the end of WWII. 1 Like the prophets of the Bible, in April 1993, I, Kacou Philippe, a man who had never been in a church, I receive in a vision, the visitation of an Angel who commissions me for a Message destined to the whole earth in fulfillment of Matthew 25:6 and Revelation 12:14. This is the account of my conversion, as well as the three great visions of the call and commission as I received them:
2 I came to conversion on April 24, 1993 according to Daniel 10:4 to 11 by a vision in which I saw myself standing on the sand of the sea and then on top of a high pyramid and then again on the sand of the sea in another place and I saw an old military truck coming out of the depths of the sea and leave behind me. I turned and I saw that it contained living people. They were women and one of them was mixed-race.
3 Then two doves came toward me and went back over the waters. And there was an eclipse, then a man having the appearance of a Cloud and holding a sword came down from Heaven with a Lamb and the earth was illuminated again. They stood on the waters and the Lamb began to speak to me in an unknown tongue. The sound of his voice came into me and I fell dead. My soul went to stand on the waters with them while my body was lying on the sand of the sea. When He had finished speaking to me, my soul came into me and I became alive again but I no longer saw Them.
4 Then a crowd of people came toward me from the right side and I asked them if they had seen the Angel and the Lamb. They said, "No!" And I said: “But, how did you not see the Angel and the Lamb and all the things They have done?” They replied, "We have not seen the Angel and the Lamb and we have not heard the Words the Lamb pronounced, but we entirely believe It because what God gave and that the devil took, has now been restituted to you ". I looked up and I saw a ladder set up between the sky and the earth, above the waters and angels ascended and descended. And the vision ended and I felt what I know today to be the Holy Spirit and I wept and I believed in God on the spot. [Kc.64v3] [Kc.130v9]
5 The following day at around 3 p.m. while I was sitting with my family, I was transported again in vision into a totally desert country and I saw eastward Words that were coming down from Heaven carried on Clouds. It was after these two visions that I got up and went to church for the very first time. [Kc.137v37]
6 In a third vision, we were sitting in an examination room for the Advanced level test and the examiner was distributing the test-papers. I said to myself, "But what am I doing here? I do not have a good school level and what am I going to write?” And later, It was said to me: "The same way that Mary conceived miraculously, without knowing any man, the same way that Moses received in details what happened at the creation, you too, you have received the Words of eternal Life on this April 24, 1993 and it is decreed by God. At the appointed time, you will understand and you will teach what you did not learn in order that whoever believes has eternal Life". [Kc.9v34] [Kc.30v1-3]
7 NOW WHAT DOES THIS MESSAGE OF THE LAMB SAY? This Message says that we are no longer in the evening time but at midnight. However, it is the same age and the same Spirit of Elijah, but a "New" Message which is a high scope of the one of the evening time. Zechariah 14:7 is therefore different from Matthew 25:6.

The SNP leader is definitely less popular than his predecessors, but I don't feel the other reasons are so clear. The scandal may not prove too damning as SNP voters are often more interested in policy, particularly if an offending policitian is no longer in the party (like allegations against Salmond after he left). Regarding "key differences", one topic in the public discourse was same sex marriage, and while not unanimous this is already very widely supported among SNP voters so it seems unlikely to cause a rift. I wonder if this video might turn out to be a bit sensationalist after the next general election as with independence support still high I struggle to believe Labour can outperform SNP in Scotland in the near future, even though they are likely to gain seats.

Labour does NOT need to win Scotland. I'm so fed up of this fairytale being spouted. It's basic maths; under the new seat boundaries than come into effect in October, Scotland has 57 seats, England has a whopping 543 - and ALL of the swing seats necessary to win a general election. The Tories are absolutely despised in Scotland, so are likely to lose some or possibly even all of their six current seats. For the Tories, Scotland is just numerically insignificant. Even after their "implosion" the SNP - who of course don't stand in the rest of the UK - are still odds-on to come out with ~40 seats leaving the other 3 main parties to divvy up just 17 seats. 17 seats versus 543. To win a UK general election, Labour needs to win in ENGLAND.

    • @notfreshprince

    • @thegamingeconomist3831
      @thegamingeconomist3831 ปีที่แล้ว

@@notfreshprince That's a fallacy. The dynamic is different in Scotland because of the independence question. Almost half of the electorate won't vote for an anti-independence party, which means Labour is not going to sweep Scottish seats in the way they will some in England. And since ~40 seats will go to the SNP and NOT the Tories, Labour doesn't really need to win anything in Scotland (they will of course win at least a couple of seats, probably in Glasgow). But even if that weren't the case, it would still be necessary for Labour to make significant gains in England in order to win. Scotland is not the key to winning, it is - and always has been - English marginal seats.

If you're going to try to predict the result of the General Election in Scotland, and good luck with that, you have to take into account tactical anti-Tory voting. I live in a rural seat that borders England and currently has a Tory MP. Don't blame me, I moved here two years ago. I will be voting SNP, as will my English other half because, and here's where it gets simple, the SNP are best placed to defeat the Tory and Labour aren't. This is true of most of the seats in Scotland the Tories currently hold. So I expect Labour to gain seats from the SNP in the central belt, and the SNP to gain seats from the Tories in the South and North East.

I currently live in Scotland, lived here for 6 years total. Also lived in England for 3 years and was raised in NI so I’ve experienced a variety of UK politics.
Labour and Conservatives are so busy criticising each other that nothing meaningful ever happens gets done. In Scotland there are many things that are quantifiably better than England. Taxes are slightly higher but it feels worth it. Scotland also feels more progressive than NI & England. I don’t think the SNP are perfect but they’re different than Lab & Con and I think that’s important because Scotland really is completely different to England.
I don’t say that to be divisive it’s just true. Look at NI, DUP trying to be like the conservatives and they have handcuffed the country just to avoid the nationalist party SF gaining power.

Polls aren't perfect, and results can sometimes be well outside the calculated margin of error, usually because of some flaw in the data gathering or normalisation techniques.
But far more often than not, they are correct within the margin of error.
Things are made more difficult for pollsters in the UK, compared to most countries, because a multiparty FPTP system is perhaps the most prone to strategic voting. So the party more people want is not necessarily the party more people vote for.

Currently labour are offering Scotland nothing. SNP have consistently provided benefits to the people of Scotland, labour and Tories are queuing up to dismantle some of the benefits we enjoy. Here labour have sided with Tories against the SNP for some time now and people are struggling to tell them apart. Labour have denounced just about every policy the SNP introduced so where do they stand and what do they offer. The Tories have the UK circling the drain. Labour are not putting forward any policies that make me think they can save the UK. If the UK is tanked then voting Labour in Scotland is pointless, they are a English centric unionist party. It would be like voting Tory Lite and Pro-Brexit even knowing what we know now.
Labour and the Tories have been working hand in hand for years in Scotland. Even before the 2014 referendum. They team up regularly to go against the SNP. Everywhere from council seats to the house of Parliament. I'll continue voting SNP or Green. Labour are not in my list of possibilities.
In the past Labour took the Scottish vote for granted and did nothing for Scotland. Now they complain that losing Scotland means the Tories get in more. The few times they got in we learned not to trust them in power anymore than the Tories.
Scottish Labour are a joke, they are not a real party, they are told what to do by the London elite and will change policy to suit the English party at the drop of a hat. Don't get me started on how Gordon Brown has lied and screwed over Scotland on behalf of Labour and the UK on any number of occasions. Every paper ran with his promises on the eve of the referendum and included bullshit front pages with each of the other parties leaders signing off on his promises. Promises that were promptly ignored as soon as enough people voted no.

She was sentenced by a court, following a police investigation. (3). Labour do NOT need to take Scotland in order to win power. 30 Know that when you are born, all family and relatives’ blessings and curses from Adam down hang above you. But when you reach the age of consciousness, not the sorcerers but your first actions determine your choice. And the solution is to return first to God through his prophet according to 2 Chronicles 20:20. Seek Salvation first. And Salvation is only through the living prophet of your time. Not an angel, not a book called Bible or Quran. Not a prophet called Moses, Jesus of Nazareth or Mahomet. But the words of a living man amongst you. And you, whatever difficulties and sufferings that you are going through, first, know that the person to blame for all this is yourself. And in search for a solution, you shall not go to just any prophet and not just anyone should lay his hands on you. You shall never trade your Salvation for an ephemeral relief from Satan in a Catholic, Protestant, evangelical or Branhamist church. In Genesis 50, Joseph asked that his bones should go up from Egypt with Prophet Moses. And you, if you are a chosen one, you must not die before you accept Kacou Philippe, the living prophet of your time.

Supporters of an independent Scotland especially an independent Scotland that is part of the EFTA and later EU will never switch to voting Labour. Labour has proven to be as desperate as the Tories to gain the votes of the xenophobic English exceptionalist brexit voters who propelled Johnson into power in 2019 and has said it will"make brexit work"which as we all know is an impossibility. Further Scots can remember 2014 when not only did Labour join forces with Labour but both Labour and the Tories said that they would if in power veto any attempt by Scotland to join the EU which was a large reason why Scotland a pro EU country voted to stay in the UK. There is also the matter of the semi official alliance in Scotland between Labour and the Tories. Then there is the fact that both regional offices take instruction from their London head offices and do not have any policy ideas of their own being forced to toe an Anglo-centric line by those head offices rather than choosing policies that would be best for Scotland. In all likelihood any SNP voter who switches away from the SNP is more likely to vote for the Scottish Greens or Alba but most will put more value on independence and will continue to vote SNP

Some important things to note about voting labour:
    - This Red-Blue swing will continue for generations until we actually have proportional representation or until we've run our country fully into the ground. It is why Labour is paranoid about showing its hand and voters are right to be skeptical about their commitment to anything. Go look at the Liberal Democrat manifesto... oh wait, there isn't one at the moment. And yet, people down south are voting them as an alternative to Tories. FPTP forces tactical voting. I don't think it's a healthy political system if you are forced to vote AGAINST the prospect of one majority party getting into power. Once you make your vote, there is nothing to hold any of the parties accountable other then their Whips and the parliamentary system. And don't think collation governments are any good, Tory-Lib Dem coallition was an axis of evil that sunk Lib Dem credibility (for those voting Lib Dem and thinking they are likely to be left wing, please have a healthy amount of skepicism). And, with the hundreds of scandals we've seen, that's not working. Europe with its proportional representative democracies look utopian compared to our 'winner takes all' donor-fest.
    - People are discussing in the comments about Kier Starmer and his policies. You are right to think it may be more of the same. Remember that Clause IV of the Labour was rewritten during Blair's time (i.e. basically tactically stepping away from Labour's socialist roots). Though Clause IV now does specify in principle that 'power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many, not the few'.
    - At best, a Labour vote is for a moderate but we won't get full re-nationalisation of everything or anything drastic. New Labour set a blueprint of saddling the fence in terms of pursuing left and right policies, and Tories got in and took that carte blanche to nose-dive as far right as possible. We are seeing the faliure of privatisation of several organisations in more recent years; particularly for example, Royal Mail, who recently came back to the government with their tail tucked between their legs begging for financial help, despite their actions as a company being 'filthy' at best. Go research some of the parliamentary committee investigations with Darren Jones as chair, you will see some unbelievable and farcical attempts at private companies attempting to parasitise our wealth as a nation just to recoup their losses.
    - Housing is absolutely the one fundamental thing but NIMBYism in combination with a broken planning permission system, plus the fact that no party has proposed anything radical for reform, shows that we are held in a stranglehold of a small minority of middle-upper class to upper class people treating property like their portfolio. Labour will not build more council houses. Anyone who is below 20000 per annum and is below the age of 40 will not have the means to buy their own housing, rather, your only option is to inherit. Which... guess what? Isn't an option, but a PRIVILEGE, and instead sounds exactly like the kind of aristocratic system we have had for generations in our country. We are going backwards as a country into a dark age.
TL:DR: System broken, Labour gets in but is inheriting a broken country that the Tories and New Labour stewarded poorly so we all suffer. Rural NIMBYs will continue to lobby for private property ownership with inflated prices and vote against the interests of enabling people of poorer backgrounds to benefit from basic amenities such as a right to shelter. Country is a rich playground and a poor person's hellhole.

    • @GeorgiawithaG
      @GeorgiawithaG ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with (almost) everything you've said, but rural NIMBYs aren't a fan of new housing for a few reasons, most unrelated to their property values:
-Greenfield land is being bought up wholesale while brownfield land remains unused and abandoned - green space is being wasted when we have old industrial land that can be reclaimed for housing.
-The places where new houses are being built aren't being supplemented with the appropriate services i.e schools and GPs that already struggle will be wholly unable to serve their communities.
-Property developers refuse to build necessary infrastructure, most of the new builds have one or two small roads connecting them with the rest of the community they are meant to be a part of. This means that the new builds feel isolated and causes heavy traffic on roads that simply aren't intended for the levels of traffic that they end up seeing.
I live down south where this NIMBYism is rife and I am generally opposed to it, especially when in relation to new green energy infrastructure, but this is one issue where the NIMBYs have a point. If you're going to build new housing, especially in a rural community, do it properly or not at all, because these communities are quickly being left further and further behind while their populations double and their infrastructure struggles.
