    I just purchased the 88 key Nautilus about a month ago. I am blown away by this awesome keyboard. I have just merely been playing around with it and checking out the thousands of sounds. I am like you, I love the all of the electric pianos. I am also watching tons of videos on the Nautilus to get a little more familiar with it, by seeing you guys going through them. Thanks for your vids.

    It's really where the Kronos/Nautilus shines. I know people gab over Nord and their E.Pianos but nothing imo beats the Kronos in the EP field. the EP-1 Engine is hands down the best E-Piano available. The Crumar modelled EP is on par but lacks the programability. You can actually adjust the Crumar in more detail, but the effects and the lack of custom presets makes the Korg win. If you use a lot of EP this is worth the whole price of the Kronos/Nautilus

    • @WoodyPianoShack

      well, i suppose the strength of the nords is e-pianos, combined with organ and hands-on front panel controls, although the CX3 sounds fantastic, performing on the touchscreen is a pain on the naut, better on the kronos I guess! good thing about rhodes is that you just select it and play!

    Just purchased the Korg Nautilus 61 key and I must say...it is incredible. Also, its on sale. This is the best sounding keyboard I have ever used. This keyboard screams professional. Really loving the sounds. I had a krome 61 and wasn't the biggest fan. I sold it. The Nautilus blows away the krome. I also have a Roland FA 06 and really love the sound of that keyboard also, but the Nautilus sounds more full and professional.

    • @ErraticFaith

      Korg appeals to people a little ways short of the old people's home. Please don't compare it to Roland. Especially the FA. Which is on nigh every live stage in Japan. Unlike the Korgs - which are barely on any! And for good reason.

    The first time I've heard of the Rhodes Dyno My Piano was keyboardist Russell Ferrante of the jazz group Yellowjackets. The first two albums they came out with in the early 80s had this instrument and I was always fascinated with the tone. I am glad to hear this sound replicated faithfully in the Korg Nautilus (which I'll be trading my Krome to get this one once it becomes available).

    Appreciate the jazz standards! Crystal Silence does sound really beautiful on the Rhodes. Perhaps because it also reminds me of Gary Burton on Vibraphones. Also "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" has been pretty much my favorite song during the social distancing era.
    And I absolutely adore these EP-1 sounds. I own the original Korg Kronos, I sampled the Rhodes Mark V for my own use so I can leave my heavy Kronos at home, I run Mainstage live, and I just use some lighter midi controllers or whatever the venue has

    My standard rig is two controllers, both running Ableton. My top layer has around 6-7 sounds stacked (acoustic bass, rhodes, 2 warm pads, and 2 moving sounds), while my lower keyboard is just a Rhodes by itself. My go-to Rhodes is always the Scarbee 200 using Native's Kontakt player (I've written 400-500 songs just based on that sound), with a hint of reverb and delay. I just like the sound of a natural Rhodes myself.
    I'm planning on buying the 77 key Nautilus next paycheck, but in all the video demos I've watched, the Nautilus EP sounds are SLATHERED in effects, making it impossible to tell what the actual Rhodes sounds sound like. Thanks again for always being my go to source for what is important in keyboards. 8).

    • @lcceo22

      I think, there's been some leapfrogging in the Big Three rompler department. IMO, the Motif ES far outclassed the EP's from Roland Fantom or Korg Triton lines at the time.
      Korg pulled about even, with some different tones, on the M3, and Roland put out respectable competition with the Integra/FA.
      Then Kronos came through and crushed the buildings. With a handful of exceptions, Montage EP's sounded, and still do, IMO, like a toy relative to Kronos. Ditto Roland, though I haven't caught the Fantom SN EP expansion yet. Kronos still has superior tone, richness, "bounce" and "bite" to their rhodes and wurlitzer sounds.
      I had a Kronos when Keyscape came out. I listened to the Keyscape demos and all but laughed, because the Kronos remains a fair stretch ahead in that department. I now have a MODX and recently got Keyscape, which is fantastic, but that EP 1 is still a work of art.

    • @tonylancer7367
      @tonylancer7367 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lcceo22 I agree, the Kronos made me realise what I have been missing from a Rhodes library. The thing that makes it so good is that it shines without effects added and sparkles when effects are added, something that I struggle with on Yamaha.
      I am not brave enough to trust Roland with the SN EPs. Sure, they are a combination of modelling and samples but for me, they sound worse than the Yamaha Rhodes IMO. I think Yamaha tried to do something about it with the new CP series, the Rhodes sound much better. I think the idea of the Keyscape Rhodes was the top-notch Rhodes for the studio, pristine, super high quality ready for recording. For me, I love it, because I don't fiddle with it when it's game time. But when I need some more, I head to Scarbee.
      If only we had stacks of money to buy Nords for ourselves, then maybe our sounds lust would decrease.

    In terms of workstation patches, I've always favoured Yamaha's electric pianos over Korg's and Roland's, though I have to say these are really good. I like the MDS velocity switching - it's pretty much impossible to hear any obviously audible velocity or pitch switching (or looping, for that matter) - and the various features like key off add even more to the authenticity of the emulation. And, when you apply the cabinet effects of drive, vibrato and EQ, I can almost smell the heat coming off the original!
    How do you feel it compares against the Nord? Some years ago, my gig rig consisted of a Yamaha Motif, Korg M3 and Nord Stage. In a warmup gig soundcheck, I played the Fender Rhodes piano patches on each one to our bass player (a younger guy, but big into his 70s sounds) and asked him which sounded best. He was reasonably impressed by the Yamaha and the Korg, but then the Nord was just like coming home - to my ears, as well, it just drips authenticity. The Nautilus is holding its own pretty well here though. And, having said all this, the various manufacturers do very well in getting the most out of their sounds with added effects etc. - something I'm actually pretty grateful for, having played around in the 70s with my uncle's Rhodes (and Pianet T!) and being pretty dissatisfied with the sound I was getting until I added some of his (fairly limited) external effects to try to get the sound I was hearing from the bands I was listening to at the time.
    Really liked this video - it is, as you say, unusual to get to hear the raw sounds without all the sweetness and icing. Some really nice playing too; it's clear to hear that you are very much at home with the Rhodes sound :-)

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      lovely comment, thanks, appreciate the final sentence, I haven't played one for years but listen to a lot of music... motif, modx, montage all have terrible rhodes imho, they really rely on heavy effects to fatten up the samples... but excellent expansions can be loaded onto the flash memory, so not an issue. nord is not detailed like the naut, I've not heard any key off samples on their rhodes. but I feel the selection of pianos they sampled have much more variety in their tone and characters.

    • @billyruss
      @billyruss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WoodyPianoShack Yes, I think I'd tend to agree that my preference in the past for the Yamaha sounds was on the basis of the effects they'd placed on them (the old "Sweetness Piano" for example worked well on gigs!). Listening again to your video, yes, there does seem to be more detail in the Korg samples than perhaps the Nord. Have to go and try one out now :-)

    The EP-1 engine does not use any samples at all, it is a physical model of tine and reed-style electric pianos, so the sound is rendered solely through mathematical models of the instruments. Hence the expressiveness and the multitude of parameters.

    Thank You! I gave away my Rhodes 73 stage to my best friend in 1999.It had a great sound,but only ONE sound. It was cumbersome to take to gigs,and repairing broken tines (and cutting them to the proper length for each note) was a sincere pain in the rear end. The sample I heard here sounds EXACTLY like my old Rhodes. I've been using a Kurzweil ME-1(the Dyno patch) for my Rhodes sound (controlled by an Italian Studiologic SL 990XP) and you've finally given me a reason to replace my setup with the Korg Nautilus. I'm curious as to how you like the feel of the keyboard,and how many keys the model you used has. I prefer 73 or 88 keys.

    Do you miss aftertouch in Nautilus? Would you consider that a compromise, regarding some great new sounds coming with the new workstation, which Kronos lacks, especially pianos, which for the first time, can be considered as, really premium, compared to what I consider as benchmark, aka Roland Fantom?

      @dartme18 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This doesn't answer your question and may not even be interesting to you, but I've never had a keyboard before and just got a Nautilus a month or two ago. I have never had after touch, so I certainly don't miss it! I really like Nautilus. I'm a software developer and can really get behind the several synth modelers in there. Not comparable! The Kronos is arguably more focused and complete! But I don't think the Yamaha EP's are awful like Woody thinks. They just have a different character altogether. Distinctly Yamaha (and perhaps less authentic) but a good sound in its own right. If you listened to any funk/fusion/aor made between 2002 and 2010, you've probably heard motif rhodes (which are all in the modx/montage) and you probably didn't complain about it. Best Rhodes I've heard come from the Yamaha CP1/CP5 which uses a completely different technology called "Spectral Component Modeling" that utilizes spectral data gathered from samples together with modeling parameters and virtual circuitry modeled effects.
