SGX-2 is a great piano engine. You can really craft a beautiful and authentic piano sound. I've spent a long time with it on my Kronos and I love it. Very accessible. Hours of fun for tweakers.

Good exploration of the various piano sounds and settings on the Nautilus. I owned a 6'1" grand piano for many years, and to me the Damper effect is one of the most important to include to create a realistic piano sound. Many of the programs appear to be variations of the same sound samples with different envelopes, settings, effects, and EQ. This is actually a good thing because the color of the sound can change significantly with different effects chained together. Optimizing the volume and effect levels, parameters, and EQ is required, else you can end up with a sound that overloads the available headroom in the internal signal path (especially when layering with other sounds) resulting in unwanted artifacts like buzzing, ringing, noise. So it's good to have many variations provided up-front as presets with appropriate settings implemented by Korg sound designers.

Yes, when you look at the multi-samples in the Voice Name List they do not show as you would expect for a stereo sample with both -L and -R samples. So my impression is the main German2 (Nautilus) is mono with the FAR samples providing stereo when added in to the mix.
@@burningbusch An interesting decision. Great pianos Woody. About the Electric Ones....If you have to choose between the MODX EPS or NAUTILUS, which do you like the most? Hope I have the chance to play the Nautilus soon in music store :)
for onboard e-piano, i think the naut takes it, on sheer sample size and realism, all the little details, key off etc are there. there are however some fantastic expansion e-piano for the modx 1gb flash memory, but again, the naut with it's 60gb disk has potential to be better.
It's depending on your style of music mate. I do love MODX EPS because personally the AWM2 engine is better than EP-1 (Korg). It's personality usage. No offense.
I like the new early Rhodes in the Nautuls, but the other Kronos- derived EP-1 sounds don’t do it for me. Not enough low end fart, or bell tone. I prefer the Purgatory Creek samples for the HD-1 engine, which use 16 velocity layers.
The berlin, austrian grands are libraries already available for the korg kronos (korg shopping). There you have gigabytes of samples available for the kronos, some of them are free (Bolder sound, kapro EXS18 and 19) . Berlin, Austrian libraries are fantastic sounding pianos. My preferred being the Berlin grand. The italian grand is also really realistic. Coming to the resonnance: it’s real sympathetic resonnance, only works if you play harmonics,... you play a C2 and the hit briefly a C4, G4,B4, (try many),...then you will hear on a real piano C (and relatives ) harmonics and subharmonics sparkeled by the C2 strings,... it works the same on the kronos. And I guess,..the nautilus. Hope this helps.
The spec sheet for the Nautilus says that references to the earlier Kronos pianos are in the Nautilus, but the sample sets (EXs files) are not. They will be an option in the future. I’m sure this was done to save usage of the limited amount of supported RAM , the biggest limitation of this architecture.
@@xp50player I don't know how the nautilus will deal with memory. But the kronos use streaming to load a huge amout ouf 35 gigabytes of samples in one shot. This is achieved in my kronos with only 2 gig of free sample RAM. From what I read the nautilus has the same sample streaming technology. Also, audio track are streamed straight away from the hard drive. This capabilities are unique to the kronos and now the nautilus.
@@WoodyPianoShack yes, correct, those are paid and sometimes offered EXs sample libraries. Depending on the kronos version you buy, korg created new sample libraries with specific piano preloaded and then made available for other kronos user (even kronos 1 user from early 2010 can still load them) of course you need to buy them. They made the limited Edition Red kronos SE, with the italian grand,...
@@ludovicBerquin - the Nautilus is streaming as well, but they added a lot of new content, and if they kept all the old pianos, there wouldn’t be much preload RAM left for user or optional libraries.

@@WoodyPianoShack Regardless of the aftertouch, I mean the feel, to the touch, how does it feel compared to Kronos? I had kronos 61 and sold it. I need to know how the nautilus feels so I can decide to buy it
@@jonathanc.r2474 sorry, I don't have much experience of kronos, and anyway, can't really describe action in words, except to say Naut is cheaper action and likely inferior to a flagship model.
Nice demo, but the pianos tend to sound as though the keys are being struck hard. I've seen a video somewhere where the velocity curve is dialed back and (to my ears anyway) the pianos have much more variety of tone. Love your videos!
As with all top end boards, you can alter the velocity. There's 12 layers and you can also increase and decrease each level by increments (although it's unlikely you would need to as the 12 levels cover a wide spectrum and the average concert pianist only uses 5 or 6 different velocities.
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks for the reply Woody. The dynamics control is in fact what I must have seen, and it does make a difference. I'm presuming it's some sort of velocity control?
About the String ressonance / Sympathetic ressonance. When you Press a key on a real piano and hold it down / use the damper pedal you lift the filt from the string so it can ressonance. So you press eg a C0 and C1 with left hand, hold it down and now play a melody line with the right hand. these 2 bass strings will now ressonance together with the ones you play with the right hand and vice versa, and will keep ressonancing even the sound has died out. Thats what the graphics is showing in the didplay. it shows wich strings are triggered indirectly from the strings you play. About the Half Damper pedal, you need a special damper pedal that is made with a potmeter instead of a switch to trigger half damper mode. If its switched on it will work if you use a half damper pedal. The instrument will auto detect wether you use one or the other. Try play a really short two handed chord and hit the damper pedal just after you release the key. it will trigger the ressonance just like a real Piano as all the strings should now pick up the ressonance from the sound board and you should also see the graphics for the ressonance. This is how it works on the Kronos so it should be the same with the Nautilus.
thanks for the explanation! the thing that puzzled me here is that the graphic only showed resonating notes when I was *not* pressing the damper pedal! i do have a continuous damper pedal btw
thank you, yeah for pianos, the software libraries are a fantastic alternative, I love mine too. for giggers, you can't beat a hardware workstation, imho.
a couple of you picking up on this! next time, our house and driving in my car, although those have some pretty complex chord progressions, those nutty boys had some chops!
Excellent walk-through, thanks! (Also nice playing!) Two questions: 1) does it have poorly-maintained pianos, possibly including honky-tonk? 2) I heard there was a special titanium edition with one extra grand, I thought it was the Faz but if the standard has the Faz, then the Titanium has I guess a Bosendorfer? Is there a way to load that into the regular model?
thank you, there's a honky tonk in there but nothing to write home about, no "living room" style pianos that are typically slightly out of tune, there is an upright that I probably demonstrated here. I showed all the pianos that are currently available, the titanium I have not seen in the voice list and no way to download and load that i am aware of.
Check out the piano on the Korg I3. You may not have as much control with them, but to my ears they sound better than the ones he's playing in this video. Don't get me wrong, I love to tweak. but if I have to spend tons of time to get a very good piano sound in this day and age is not for me. Who's got all that time.
The Korg does sound nice (as far as it can over YT) but $4,500 for another synth? The key bed seems not as good as the Fatar TP/40WOOD and anyway it's probably a nightmare for B3 organ grinders and percussion work or Wurli birds. I still hold to Pianoteq and the SL88 Grand combination as state of the art. A length and a half to XLN Addictive Keys for second place.
hi woody, i would love a video showing the combination mode. In my opinion the pianos that you showed in this video I honestly did not like, they sound very high-pitched and annoy the ear, I am listening through headphones and they sound horrible.

@@WoodyPianoShack Thank's Woody
Nice demo, but the pianos tend to sound as though the keys are being struck hard. I've seen a video somewhere where the velocity curve is dialed back and (to my ears anyway) the pianos have much more variety of tone. Love your videos!
As with all top end boards, you can alter the velocity. There's 12 layers and you can also increase and decrease each level by increments (although it's unlikely you would need to as the 12 levels cover a wide spectrum and the average concert pianist only uses 5 or 6 different velocities.
this is where the dynamics knob comes in really handy, i did start dialing it back towards the end of my experimentations, works an absolute treat!
@@WoodyPianoShack Thanks for the reply Woody. The dynamics control is in fact what I must have seen, and it does make a difference. I'm presuming it's some sort of velocity control?
japanese modelled after a yamaha or a kawai?
safe to assume yamaha, the small grand has "C" in the name, the upright has "U", plus korg have been known to collaborate with yamaha.
Heard some Heart “These Dreams” in there.😋
About the String ressonance / Sympathetic ressonance.
Plus you had the dial for it at 12 which is really low
Well this thing is out of my league... i prefer buy software vst piano than buy this kronos alike.. btw nice skill playing sir
thank you, yeah for pianos, the software libraries are a fantastic alternative, I love mine too. for giggers, you can't beat a hardware workstation, imho.
Boa tarde você acha o piano dele mesma coisa do zero um bar ww que eu acho que parece um cadinho 01 para w da cog
"piano madness" :)
a couple of you picking up on this! next time, our house and driving in my car, although those have some pretty complex chord progressions, those nutty boys had some chops!
Esses sons estão iguais a samples kontakt
19:45 Weren't you supposed to play the song by Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You? 😅
never heard of it, more proof that i'm an old fart.
@@WoodyPianoShack Well then, let's listen to it and play it in the next video! It's a really good song.
Madness - My Girl?!
I hear it
Check out the piano on the Korg I3. You may not have as much control with them, but to my ears they sound better than the ones he's playing in this video. Don't get me wrong, I love to tweak. but if I have to spend tons of time to get a very good piano sound in this day and age is not for me. Who's got all that time.
Hell, what does 3:42 - 3:56 remind me of ?!
Tubular Bells
The Korg does sound nice (as far as it can over YT) but $4,500 for another synth? The key bed seems not as good as the Fatar TP/40WOOD and anyway it's probably a nightmare for B3 organ grinders and percussion work or Wurli birds.
I still hold to Pianoteq and the SL88 Grand combination as state of the art. A length and a half to XLN Addictive Keys for second place.
4500 in which currency?

Korg always had way better painois than Yamaha
I have ll of that on a cheap laptop, vst and a great yamaha controller.....ll never
spend thousands on a hardwrae keyboard ever again
hi woody, i would love a video showing the combination mode. In my opinion the pianos that you showed in this video I honestly did not like, they sound very high-pitched and annoy the ear, I am listening through headphones and they sound horrible.
ouch! ok, i have plenty of combi demos coming.
@@WoodyPianoShack Woody you play incredible about that there is no doubt, I speak about the korg, that I feel that the korg does not sound like modx when it comes to pianos, I am eager to hear the combinations because, I am super interested in the korg but the pianos left me with a bitter taste, the combi may save my purchase haha.
Bad earphones? This was one of the best synth Pianos i've ever heard. Kicks all the asses out there...yamaha, Nord, espacially roland😅
Too expensive for me.
I still prefer the piano's of the PC4
Muy feo el modelo, parece un barco ,el único que tiene bonito es la pantalla, ojalá si se escucha como el kronos
Soy muy curioso verlo un video demostrando si es como el kronos
Kronos 2 piano is richer
