  • Lukla Airport, also known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport is a small airport located in the town of Lukla, in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. It is the starting point for many trekkers and climbers who are headed to Mount Everest, as it is the closest airport to the base camp. Lukla Airport is considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world, due to its short runway, high elevation, and challenging approach and departure procedures. Lukla Airport is becoming a busy airport with the spring trekking season in the Everest region.

    You definitely wouldn’t be happy about any engine glitches on take off from that strip. Even a momentary hiccup in engine power..

    The only tight spot for a c130 would be at the top of the runway, it they moved that tower over 50 feet then a c130 could turn around, a c130 can take off on a football feild , has a hotair balloon ever landed there or a hang glider

  • @johnwood551
    @johnwood551 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Taking off is no big deal, you have huge drop at the end to pick up plenty of airspeed. I’ve flown off lot shorter dirt strips than that . The hard part is coming and landing and stopping in time as it’s a one way airstrip. Density altitude plays a big part at that high altitude.

      Looks like it. At take off, at the end of the runway, if you are not flying, you are flying :-)

    For gamers only (flight simulators) (not for those who insist on getting altitude-sickness, flying in without acclimatisation)
    = brakes, 100% throttle test-engine, release-brakes, reduce engine to 50%
    = main landing-gear touches down-slope, 70% throttle for minimal gyroscopic-effect versus thrust
    = flatter part of runway, throttle 80% to increase gyroscopic-effect
    = up-slope part of runway, main-landing-gear on upslope, aircraft stabalised to slope, air-flow stabalised to slope, 100%-throttle
    = throw furthest possible without flaps(structural-stress) and 5%-up-pitch trim(to avoid tail strike edge of cliff, to be done before brakes-release but explained here)
    = do-NOT pull yoke, let gravity pull-plane downwards, air-compresses under wings, air bouyancy will stabalise fall and throw plane forwards, do-NOT pull yoke, wait for GROUND-speed to be above 160kmh(motorcycle cruise, aerodynamoc efficiency), wait for ground-speed to be above 240kmh, check altitude

    The difference in T.O. distances between the DH and the MU is significant. There's not much runway left after the Mitsubishi rotates. Density altitude probably doesn't change much season-to-season either. It's no wonder only a limited number of pilots have certification to land there.

    • @genkoguchi1110

      I don’t think those are MU-2. They do not have tip tanks MU-2 all have.

    I never see any jets landing at Lukla, not even small corporate jets, is it because of the runway, the altitude or the mountains around it ?
    Just wondering... 🙂🙂
