Great reaction and commentary for this song.
I vote for the “A Change of Seasons” for next reaction.

The best live version of this song is on the Gigantour... they actually play it FASTER on that live version!!! They were touring with Megadeth, so they had to bring it.

Hey everyone. An amazing pioneer of progressive metal just passed in Sean Reinert(drummer). I don't know how many reactors are going to honor him like they did Neil, but if we could get a reaction for Cynic - Veil of Maya, that would be awesome, their contributions to what we look for in extreme prog still stand exceptionally well.

Sorry to hear that. I will do that song for Monday.

So happy you could work it into the cue so soon for this. This song came out in 1993, and other than later stuff from the band Death, and Atheist, you just didn't hear the kind of interesting stuff Cynic was bringing into the genre. A lot of that kind of extreme jazz that's so popular now was taking root.

Nex time you do dream theater, you should do dance of eternity! Easily my favourite of theirs

A Change of Season should definitely be next. I noticed in this video that you said this was James' best performance that you've heard so far, but none of your reaction videos appear to be of songs from Images and Words or Awake (the albums before he blew out of his vocal cords). The power and range he had before that incident is the stuff of legends. I suggest Learning to Live from Images and Words. The F5# that he hits in Learning to Live is amazing, but he unfortunately never does it live any more.

It is next. I haven't listened to many of the songs. It is my favorite so far. That's not saying it's technically better than others I've heard, it's not. But for me, his vocie was an impediment for me to get into D.T. not even sure why. He's clearly a very good vocalist. Something didn't connect with me. On this song, I really enjoyed his vocie and approach. That being said. The more I listen, the more I like his voice.

@@sonicallydisruptive I feel kind of the same. Longer ago than I probably would want to admit, I saw DT share the stage with Queensryche, touring Train of Thought and Tribe respectively. Seeing Geoff Tate front Dream Theater on a couple of songs in that tour (they swapped members back and forth with both bands on stage, finishing with both bands performing together fully) made me really wish DT had had the guts to replace LaBrie long, long ago. For a supposedly classically trained opera singer, he's very imprecise and floaty.
That said, I can't truly imagine Dream Theater with anyone else singing for them... and like you, he's grown on me over time. About the time I really started to respect him more was on their Rock Opera "The Astonishing", where he plays 8 different characters and a narrator, each with his or her own voicing, range, and style, and each instantly and clearly recognizable as he flips through them in, at times, rapid-fire conversational lyrics. Actually, if you're ever interested in doing about a two hour reaction...

I don't know od you are familiar with Pantera and Dimebag (you probably are) but there's a Polish band called Decapitated. And there's a guitarist called Vogg, and this dude is fucking insane. What my point about Pantera is, is that Vogg is on Dimebag level. No question. One of the best. He also joined Machine Head recently. Totally worth checking out the band Decapitated if you like heavy stuff or at least mr Vogg himself. Cheers Sir \m/

Definitely know Dimebag and Pantera well. Don't know Decapitated or Vogg. I check it out, thanks.

I'm not a fan of Jordan's keyboard soloing usually unless some of his piano sounds. Dream Theater I allow when they go a bit show off bits in their songs. Guys having fun even if it doesn't match for the song so well. That's just my mindset when I listen to Dream Theater :). I recommend Scarred from The Awake album. Not overplaying bits that don't fit in the song in my opinion.

Scarred is magnificent. I'm getting a little annoyed people keep requesting only the huge songs but damn is this one gorgeous.

Same with Space-Dye Vest.... it is so perfect, but when they play it live there's this massive shred solo....NO NOT IN THIS PIECE, JOHN!

I feel like they've kind of settled down and matured in recent years, kind of starting when Mangini joined the band (not sure if that's coincidence or not). Around that time I sensed the beginnings of a shift away from show-off masturbatory playing wrangled into every single piece and toward skill in service of music. Just the beginnings, mind... I don't think they fully cohered in that regard until The Astonishing, and by Distance Over Time the band is incredibly tight and mature, locked up like never before.
I suspect that some of that really _is_ due to Mangini... maybe not in the form of direct influence, but more because while I'll agree that Portnoy was a more melodic drummer with a better groove, he also mostly played in support of Myung along with hitting figures. With Mangini, it feels more like the drums are their own separate instrument to me, sometimes supporting Myung, sometimes emphasizing other elements of the lead, keyboards, or vocals, and sometimes doing their own unique thing to add color. This to me is analogous to how sometimes Myung just plays the bassline, sometimes synchs into the main chord progressions with either Petrucci or Rudess, sometimes goes into unison riffs and runs with the guitar or keyboard, and sometimes does his own solo thing. Each member of the band with Mangini feels a bit more versatile and free to explore, and _that_ is what I think makes Mangini a worthy drummer for them, not his (objectively undeniable) technical prowess.
