@@keithkkim Awesome! If you don't mind me asking, did you focus on instrumental or composition?
...I knew while I'm competent at a few instruments, I was nowhere near a level to make a career out of it, so I became a scientist who plays a lot of prog rock/metal in the lab much to the chagrin of some of my grad students.
In terms of modern music, I've always found it amusing that for all the hate that gets tossed at any genre of progressive...well pretty much anything, that when you look at the music, you see a lot more elements of music theory. Bands like DT, Rush Opeth, or Mastadon, are all top notch IMO.

This is one of my favorite tracks of theirs, mainly because of how the music and subject matter mesh so brilliantly. The song is about panic attacks, and the music is so frenetic and unsettling. Never really lets you settle into a groove or feel comfortable with it, and driving to a crescendo that shouldn’t be possible considering the song starts at such a high intensity.

    Verse 1]
All wound up, on the edge, terrified
    Sleep disturbed, restless mind, petrified
Bouts of fear permeate all I see
    Heightening nervousness threatens me
    [Bridge 1]
    I am paralyzed
    So afraid to die
    [Verse 2]
Caught off guard, warning signs never show
Tension strikes, choking me, worries grow
    [Chorus]
Why do I feel so numb?
Is it something to do with where I come from?
Should this be fight or flight?
I don't know why I'm constantly so uptight
    [Verse 3]
Rapid heartbeat pounding through my chest
    Agitated body in distress
I feel like I'm in danger
Daily life is strangled by my stress
A stifling surge shooting through all my veins
    Extreme apprehension, suddenly I'm insane
    Lost all hope for redemption
A grave situation desperate at best
    [Chorus]
Why do I feel so numb?
Is it something to do with where I come from?
Should this be fight or flight?
    I don't know why I'm constantly reeling
    [Refrain]
    Helpless hysteria
    A false sense of urgency
    Trapped in my phobia
    Possessed by anxiety
    Run, try to hide
    Overwhelmed by this complex delirium
    [Instrumental Break]
    [Keyboard Solo]
    [Guitar Solo]
    [Refrain]
    Helpless hysteria
    A false sense of urgency
    Trapped in my phobia
    Possessed by anxiety
    Run, try to hide
    Overwhelmed by this complex delirium

This wasn't an instrumental originally, so no reason for the lyrics not to show up, shame on the uploader! :P
You mentioned how you don't even know how to move your face to the verse - this part of the song is a bit of an oddity, literally speaking, because check this out: It's in 5/8 time (as opposed to 4/4, common time), it's the 5th song out of 8 on their 8th album, there was 5 members in the band and the whole album, Octavarium, is about how things come full circle like an octave - again, 8. These guys are not joking around

I love this song. Both this one and Never Enough are HEAVILY influenced by Muse. In particular, Stockholm Syndrome and Hysteria, respectively. Even that style of singing at 6:22 is a nod to Matt Bellamy's falsetto and in Never Enough, that loud breathing is also something Matt does a lot. I recommend anything from Muse's first four albums (my favourites being the second and third).

Afterlife and Metropolis were notoriously bad, he screeched a lot and went off tune. I recommend Moment of Betrayal. Very underrated drumming in that one 😉

    • @barefootalien
      @barefootalien 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I've always hoped a good reactor would do the entirety of The Astonishing, with the story and lyrics in front of them. Moment of Betrayal is just incredible, but I'm not sure standing alone, out of context, it would have anywhere near the spine-chilling punch. I never thought The Astonishing got a fair shake... a lot of fans were so butthurt over Portnoy leaving they never really gave it a chance. If you study the story and really, really listen to it, it's a deeply moving epic saga. Every time I listen to it, I come out shaken and off-kilter for the better part of two days. I actually *don't* listen to it that often because I feel like it costs me some piece of my soul each time I do.
I see comments all the time on their newer stuff, "Man, they never should've got rid of Portnoy" and the like. Well... he quit. What were they supposed to do? They could've disbanded like so many others. Instead, they faced into it, held auditions, and moved on, a bit awkwardly at first perhaps, but as they've gelled as a group with Mangini, and as he's matured beyond just showing off his technical prowess into becoming a true, fully-melded member of the band, I think they've done some of their best stuff ever.
Plus, I mean, geez... how many more albums about alcoholism, insanity, and 12-step programs did we really want? I feel like they've gotten a breath of fresh air and got to explore some new ideological and creative ground, making the title of their first album with Mangini extremely poignant: A Dramatic Turn of Events.

I've noticed some videos that say "with lyrics" sometimes put them in the description and not in the video.
Or - and this is total speculation - maybe they just claim it's a "lyric" video to avoid ©opyright strikes? Which would be odd cos lyrics are just as protected as audio and video, but it's TH-cam, where there's no consistency or logic. Just rules & regulations.

  • @eng-eq7xy

One thing to always remember about Dream Theater is that they are 100% music nerds, and I mean that as a compliment. Octavarium as an album is wrapped around a series of mathematical concepts relating to 5, and 8.
In the case of Panic Attack, some people find the track hard to listen to, as the music seems to be off-tempo at times, but that's more related to the time signature jumping between 5/8 and 8/8. The 8/8 parts, those we're used to, and 4/4 is probably the most commonly used time signature in western music as a whole.
    Those 5/8 parts?
It can seem like the measure is missing notes, or has too many, but it all works together to create that mental dissonance, and exemplifies something like a Panic Attack.
