As an American I am aware of the stereotypes we have as a country. Today I am very curious to hear from Norwegian about what they honestly think of America and Americans. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
The US has changed massively over the years, and so have my views of the country. My first visit, on a concert tour in 1960, the place was humming, bright, full of positivity. When my family and I lived there in the late 80s/early 90s, we saw more distrust, racial tension, and less gung-ho spirit. Last time I was there, when a son of mine was an undergrad in Massachusets in 2017, the place had become frighteningly violent, polarised, fearful, and edgy. I shan't go there again.

The "third world country" statement is very much referring to the poor health care, poverty for the working class, the insurance systems, corruption and lack of training within the police and the political polarities.
Wow, that's a lot, huh. As a Norwegian, big respect for taking all of that with a lot of acceptance and dignity!

The US has solved the issue of corruption by raising the bar of what can be called corruption. Through Citizens United and similar laws bribery, and the act of buying political influence, is legal. In Europe, this is corruption. Former Mayor of Bergen in Norway was given a private tour on a cruise ship after expediting an application for a permit for that cruise line. Such an act would be seen as quite normal in the US, while it ended this politicians career in Norway.
Exactly, qs soon as a scandi does anything to do with getting money from Someone, it raises a few questions. In America it's almost expected. You cant have anything built just because you're a rich twat. In USA it seems to be the way..
Two years ago my wife and I visited our old home town Seattle. Last year we visited a friend in Chile for a month. Parts of both countries resemble each other in parts, both scenically and economically. The US has fallen politically, scholastically, and economically. We are glad we now live in Norway.
I do think that if Norwegians in general would sum up amaricans, they would say friendly.

When it comes to things like healthcare, education, politics, policing and worker rights i would say America feels like a third world country. Great place to live if you have a lot of money but i would never live there unless i get rich and could just ignore all those problems
Have you ever considered making videos of you having a conversation with a Norwegian?
Like over voice or video chat with a variety of people from different places here in Norway and on top of that you could also talk to people from different generations as well. Could be a ton of potential content and you'd also learn a ton about Norway from the ones you talk to, just an idea that popped into my head.

The girl at the beginning uses the word 'spesiell' when describing Americans, it doeesn't exactly translate as 'unique'. It has slightly more negative connotations in Norwegian, and means something more like peculiar, strange, odd, eccentric, not average, or something of distinct character. She wasn't actually being that polite. It's just badly translated.
Or "Special" like "My mommy calls me special"
Regarding corruption I would say that is a big difference to Norway. Not that we are totally free from it but I think our society is very much more based on trust. Most people in Norway pays taxes knowing that the money do not end up in someones private pockt but are distributed back in forms of free healtcare, free eductation, long maternaty leavs etc.....Not that we don´t have heated debates about our high taxes:) Just the thing that people´s income and taxes ar public and transparent helps to keep corruption down.
This is why Scotland admires the whole Norwegian tyoe of govt and policies. Norway would be the template to achieve if Scotland got its independance but it would take many years to achieve but you have to start somewhere.
I’ve been to the US once and I think the biggest difference I noticed was how extroverted Americans are. I absolutely love it. In Norway we’re kinda awkward around strangers and we’d rather stand in the bus than sit beside someone we don’t know.
I believe the reason a lot of Norwegians (myself included) have a negative view of the US is because of the government and not the people 😄

In Norway you should also build your buisness and make money, just dont brag about it. Dont annoy others by being loud, and pay your taxes with a smile.
Politics is life, you can't separate it. When human rights are not for everyone in a country, in EVERY state, like for women - then what does that say about a country? That the democracy is under serious threat, from the inside as well as out. Healthcare, corruption, crazy gun laws that seem to mean more than human lives. Everything has a prize, everything can be bought. For a first world country the US is struggling with pretty basic stuff. Education... Workers rights... Propaganda/religion instead of facts. Is it ok if you can just move to another state, if you don't like what's going on, but just let it go on hurting others...?
I mean, politics is not life. It's indoctrination. We allow ourselves to make it our life, which is a weakness on our part. But in most parts of the world, they don't even have a TV. I'd say that those people are much better of, and I honestly envy them a bit. Not gonna lie.

Been working in FMC for many years. First time we got people from US to our office in Norway we said to each other that americans do not need cell phone to talk to college in US .
I'm glad to hear that you actually appreciate and listens to other thoughts about your country and culture, not being so self centered and "we're (I'm) the best". That kind of reactions also makes us non-Americans, or at least myself, reflecting about our assumptions about you. Thanks :)
Hi dude! I was in New York a few years ago and it's the best big city holiday I've ever been on. Kindest most welcoming people I have ever met. And I have been around Europe quite a bit. Only good things to say about the Americans, from my point of view. From Norway with Love💙💙

The US is drowning in debt. The debt is now so enormous that the country will probably never be able to repay what it owes. Americans live beyond their means. Norway, on the other hand, has an enormous "foreign fund". Most Norwegians actually live quite frugally.
This can’t be said about disabled people . Many are under the poverty level. But we get the same kind of medical attention like anyone else. If I knew what it would be like to apply for disabilityaid, I would try to get an education and a job instead . 😢

In a recent NRK poll re Black Friday sales, about 20% of Norwegian respondents claimed they hated everything about America. That was actually one of the choices, "I hate everything about America". Fact-check it on NRK, in a recent article re Black Friday sales and getting ripped off or not.

As an American in Norway i want my country to be nothing like you people.
I loved it when I was there in the 90's for an extented period (years). When I was young and undestructible. Did the whole metal scene at the time. LA, Sunset Boulevard. Took whatever job I could get as long as I didn't have to sell my Ibanez (was a close call at times).
Now that I'm older and the big C has finally struck, I'm sorta glad I moved back to Norway when I did.
Our healthcare is system far from perfect, but having spent a year in hospital undergoing countless surgeries and all the "treatments" the big C throws at you, I'm kinda thankful for it.

America is a country I would not live in! First of all, I really feel sorry for Americans who don't have a union that helps people in job situations. It seems that all employers can do exactly what they want, whether it's pay or vacation. The government simply does not take care of Americans. AND they spend way too much money on defense, it was said that if "the American Defense Forces" closed everything for a month, they would be able to help everyone who doesn't have a place to live, and they could still get money to live on? ! I'm also glad I live in Norway when it comes to politics, because when two old men are what America can find as proper presidents, then they struggle. There are those who say they are just popets, and that those who really rule sit behind a completely different table than the round one! What these people were not aware of when Trump was elected was that he did not allow himself to be ruled, but wanted to rule the whole ship himself, that's when things went really wrong. What he did was to divide the country, to create chaos, and then try to rule these masses himself, which he never managed. He never saw what chaos he was actually creating, and then it becomes both dangerous and chaotic. I believe that the average American is a person who stands up and works, who is both friendly and at the same time easily boasts about his skills and his results, and who believes that he himself has an important role in society. He can probably also look down on people who have a weaker position than himself, and can probably also express this in some contexts. Americans can be both braut and quite superficial, and you can often hear when Americans are nearby, just like Germans, but Germans are more educated and civilized than Americans in my opinion! BUT, I don't think Americans believe in the "American Dream" anymore. Americans look more, and see how we are in, for example, Europe, where we have safe health conditions, you will always get help at one hospital, you can go to university for free, and when you work you are required to take about 5 weeks off a year. You can work in a grocery store, and still be able to settle down and live well. And if a man wants a child, it doesn't cost much, until you have to buy clothes and food for the child, because you don't pay to give birth in a good hospital, it's almost free. In addition, all follow-up of the child is free at the healthcare system. And when the child goes to school, they have free dental help, free books, and they have three months off in the summer, their own autumn holiday and time off at Christmas, and their own winter holiday, and of course a holiday at Easter.

In this country we have accepted that we don't all need to be equally well, but we must all be equal and well. America is a century behind on this. USA is a third-world country from our perspective. You are not comparable to Europe, so you must be compared to Africa, which is the literal definition of third-world.

Humans are meant to be a social species and the way Tyler describes American's as being the opposite.
It isn't always an easy pill to swallow, to watch ones own country being criticized, so I appreciate approaching it in such an open-minded manner.
The third-world comment is perhaps in need of some explaining, but it's partially because we are fed a lot of negative information about how life is like in the US, with the school shootings, the poverty problem, the complaining about border politics and the general xenophobia expressed by a few very loud voices.
I know some Americans and they are all very nice, so I know we get a bit of a tainted perspective in our media, it doesn't reflect the people as a whole. And we see it as a bit of a description of a third world state when the situation is that a few rich people sit at the top and the people suffer underneath working unreasonably long hours etc or the prison system which is almost more comparable to slavery with extra steps.
To a Norwegian, that almost seems as bad as some dictatorships around the world and is where that comment comes from.
I am just admiring your humble way of watching and accepting these people throwing negative stuff about your country! It must be difficult even if some of it is true.
I am quick to criticise Norwegians for being self-centred -knowitalls, but if an American would say that about Norwegians, I would not be able to meet that humbly like you just did!
You keep impressing me, and also, you show us " that Americans can be quite the opposite of what is being discussed in this video.
I have many American friends and work relations, and they are all such amazing smart people.
When going to IT conferences here in Europe, I always gravitate towards the American clicks, and they welcome everyone with open arms and so much enthusiasm. It's so refreshing hanging out with the Americans I've met so far. They have an enthusiasm and optimistic energy that I so miss here in Norway.
And yes, I have been to the US.
As said early in this video, it's not valid to make general assumptions and put all Americans under the same hat.
Watching this video, I think your behaviour and intrest speaks louder about Americans than these critics from Norway. 😅❤

I know many Americans, and my impression and experience is that many are “fake” aka surface level only. They may appear open and nice as they are very talkative and loud, but that doesn’t mean they are authentic. When shits becomes serious, the majority is no where to be seen🤷🏾♀️ What I love about Norway as we know where we have each other. Like no superficial BS. We don’t like sugar coating things.
Haha I've only just started this video but I must comment on the "unique" thing. When someone from a Nordic country says you're unique in that way, that's certainly not a compliment. It's a polite way of saying crazy/weird.
We have some Norwegians as well who we consider loud and self-centered, such as a stereotypical person from Bergen.
That's why I love americans. They are friendly and open. And I love how guys open the doors for you ang give you compliments. And also that everybody wish you a good day. My favorite is : "how are you?" They way you often say"please, thank you and I'm sorry" make me happy❤ people in Norway are almost mute when it comes to these phrases.
The most important rule if you want to evolve to a better self is to allow yourself to admit your own failures. If you can't that, then you can't progress on any level.

When I think of America today, the first thing I think of is the politics. American politics scares me so much. We, Norwegians have based our security on NATO. When America have a presidential candidate who says he wants to withdraw US from NATO, that puts us in a vulnerable position. We share a border with Russia and there is war in Europe. We dont have any nuclear weapons, because we trust the nuclear protection from the US. Since it now is difficult to trust US, I am afraid that Europe will have to build up our own nuclear weapons. That will make the world more dangerous.
You should look into the Kongsberg Group and what they make. Norway sells alot of wepons to the US. We produce the guidig system for the Joint Strice Missile and we landed a gigantic deal with the US marine. Ship to ship missiles.
The biggest difference between Norwegians and Americans is that Americans believe in independence, while Norwegians believe in inter-dependence. Americans could do without Americans, but Norwegians cannot survive without Norwegians. It's the thing I love the most about being Norwegian, it's that without the Norwegians, I am nothing. Nothing at all. I know that I will need them and I will give what I have to give knowing that. It's Janteloven; I am not more important than the team, but the team is not more important than me. I don't do anything for Norway, but if Norway needs me, then all I have belongs to it. But we only say this on May 17th. :)
I’ve never been in America, but I had penpals( writing letters to eachother) in the USA frombthe age of 13, as I fell in love with the Gibb Brothers, that’s The Bee Gees I’m talking about. They had some massive hits in the 1960’s , the 70’s and up to the early 2000’s, such as Staying Alive, Night Fever ,Words, More than a woman, You Win Again, Spirits having flown ++ … I was also very interessted in the Native Americans, and I thought about going to the US as an exchange student- like going to high school and live with an American family.
But life happend , not only for me, but politics happened all over the world, such as the Gulf war and then the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the USA.I think there was a tremendous change in American Politics- the different presidents, driving the USA into war. And I also noticed the moronic weapon/Gun laws- like people thinks that owing a gun ( assult rifles etc) is a humanright , which sounds completly wrong in my head. And the number of ppl getting shot and unfortunatly killed, is becoming higher every year!
I thought that America was this big , nice and a bit mysterious country , and I really wanted to go over the pondcand to travel around to Florida, to the states where many famiies had norwegian relatives , to go visit Native American Reservations , and so on. But the last 15-10 years America has changed so much in a negative way- when it comes to Radicale Right Wing Political Parties , where angry young men are rioting to take away womens rights. Some of the worst will refuse women when it comes to Leader jobs- or in any jobs- they look upon women to loose any human rights , because in their minds women are stupid , overemotional beings which should only stay at home as birthmachines. One of the most radical guys said in a speech that women should not be allowed to ask questions inside a church , or be present inside a church, because they are less worthy than men. That’s disgusting! And then there is former «president « Donald Trump who almost - in europeans eyes - told his followers to breaking and entering Capitol Hill. He’s still spreading hatred and disruption. Biden is not much better , as he’s sideing with Israel in the conflict between Palestine and Israel, turning a blind eye to the suffering of the civilian people.

In groups, americans are unbearable, and in person they are the friendliest people in the world. It's weird.
That's an interesting observation. Maybe the reason is that one American is a great conversation partner for a Norwegian who holds back, but too many will be too much to handle?

As a Norwegian i can tell you we dont really like the US and most parents use the US as a bad exeple like `` dont do that you will end up like the bad americans`` but that doesnt go for everyone we also like alot of parts of the US and other places like Florida and other places so Yeah we neither like or dislike the US

Ive watched almost all of your reactions, and during so many of them last years I have become very fond of it. You have become more and more openminded (espescially in European and Norwegian way of thinking). You are the best person to educate Americans into the right way of thinking how 8 billion peoples can live as friends together on this planet forever from this day on. I really hope that you partissipate on the vote list as an American president candidate in 2028 (or rather 2024). Please free us all from D. Trump!
This is the first time I get proper annoyed with Tyler.
It is not an uncommon thing that countries and organisations look at the US as a third world country, because of the amount of poor people (lower class vs middle class), the poor education system and the amount of corruption in politics.
But the average American doesn't know that. The 3 things you mention + the corporate media are all working to keep Americans from finding out. Honestly, the internet is the crack in the propaganda wall.
I'd say it is a first world country, with a third world country inside it.
To be fair to Tyler - noone wants to think too many negative thoughts about your own country, and certainly the class divide is very noticeable. I believe Tyler also belong to the (dwindling) middle or perhaps upper-middle class and is somewhat insulated from the worst problems.
We don't like to admit we have poverty issues in scandinavia as well. It is absolutely relateable I think. 😅
LOTS of Norwegians [and their descendants] in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas. Because weather (and cheese, in the case of Wisconsin) 😂

When I went backpacking, there was a guy who looked stereotypically American. But he had stitched a giant Canadian maple leaf onto his backpack. (He was Canadian) because he knew that people, around the globe, would consider USA bad, but Canada good.
It is important to note that many Norwegians opinion about the USA consist of listening to journalists in the mainstream media and the opinions of those journalists. And those journalists are to the left politically.
Basically, Norwegian journalists describe the good opinions as being woke, believe in feminism, open borders, global warming and voting democrat, as far as the USA is concerned.
Republicans, those that like the founding fathers, the US constitution, do your own thing and make money, restrictions on immigration and those pro-family are being described as being to the far right.
So Norwegians that get their news from the mainstream media in Norway get a very skewed leftleaning perspective of the USA. Think of it as all mainstream media in the US being MSNBC across TV, radio and newspapers.
On the positive side, more and more Norwegians are a lot more positive to the USA since they seek news from newer alternative sources that has sprung up in Norway from ordinary Norwegians tired of the old leftist opinions.
That last paragraph would be rather dangerous to say aloud here in Norway, since you very easily can be branded to be on the far right, if you do not have the same meaning as those leftleaning journalists (a.k.a janteloven, which was written as a warning by the author btw, it is not something you are supposed to follow, but rather to oppose).
There are unfortunately examples of e.g. teachers at Norwegian schools that have been pushed out of their jobs for being branded as being to the right for having opinions that would be normal as a Republican in the USA. So many Norwegians stay quiet and do not state their opinions in public.
I'm pausing the video and typing this before watching, makes it more funny to see if others think the same.
Yes I'm from Norway.
I find American very kind and open and seems to be very interested in the rest of the world and their culture. But can be a very arrogant people. Sadly can also be rude, this is with the part when doing something wrong or being told to stop in other countries you tends to often say the same phrase: "Yeah but in America" added with explaining the Americans laws.
The media in USA I find really scary, specially after the ASAProcky case, apparently Swedish prison are worse and inhumane.
Americans seems like a really split people, specially when it comes to politics and not able to see each others side and have an understanding for each other it seems to be more fueled with anger towards each other.
Identity issues added with culture policing each other.
But all said this is something you find in every country, its just Americans has pushed this to a way higher level then any other countries.
I personally like Americans, fun to talk easily to befriending with.
And again this is my personal experience with Americans, dose not mean I represent every Norwegian.
I need to add after watching, Americans health care system is definitely viewed as a third world's country, and after my trip in Japan in October yes Americans tends to be really loud when speaking. never been a problem for me but in Japan it was, many times you could hear Americans miles away, and Japanese seems to not like confrontations ignored them but you could see that they was really annoyed about it, but this is the first time I saw it as a issue. never though much about it in any other country I meet Americans.
As a Dane are going too agree whit in a sense America are a 3world country, not in wealth because it’s a extremely rich country, but it’s also a extremely gun happy country, they use so much wealth on the army, not focusing on the people, they don’t need police the world, try focus on the American people, it’s a very money driven place which are okay in one aspect, but it’s on the public cost, they need focus on own problems, they can’t save the world alone

From my perspective United Americans are so diverse, but still many are polarized. They have problems standing United (pun intended). They share a lot with the rest of america having this wild-west mentality. I am sure they would find solutions for their problems, and maybe even we can learn from that.
Otherwise I think Americans are a brave, creative and outgoing people with good sense of humour. They seem to take care of their family and are more independent of their government. Its often easy to criticize America for doing this or that, not taking to consideration their history and tha fact that the USA is not Europe.
I never actually though about it, but its strange how a country named United States of America, seems to be so extremely divided 🤔😆 its also kind of sad tbh.😢
What is strange to me, is that each state can have different laws, that just feels.. wrong, to me as a Norwegian. I have not looked this up, but i have never heard of different laws for each of our ''states''(fylker).

Norway is properly the most USA friendly country in Europe. More so then UK I would say.
I think the biggest difference between the US and Norway (and Western Europe more generally) is in the realm of religion. The Church simply doesn't play a big role in people's life here.
The US is a great place to start a business. Slave wages, no unions and making bank.The regular Joe is never bailed out, just banks, Wall Street etc.

But what I wanted to say , as a Norwegian. We are kinda mini USA , cos if the Martial help after WW2. USA had a huge star in Norway and the rest of Europe for years, until you shifted from beeing a country to become a FIRM. You treat your citizens like crap, lying to them on daily basis, powerty , drugs , homelessness etc etc

Personally I feel that Americans love safe cheap outrage and willingly participate in it, reinforcing those who farm drama - while blaming it on evil corporate media.
About changing opinion, the US "situation" is a lot more hostile with people isolating themselves into different camps, so there isn't much room to discuss or change opinion compared to a more chill place like Norway.
You should make a trip to Norway Tyler. You would not want to go back to America.
Not everybody in the Third World country do starve. But didn’t America you have very very rich people, and some people are really poor.. I think the homelessness is a problem. and people that is getting paid that can’t cover their means of living, so they have to have two jobs.! there’s corruption, you have gangs, but then again, you have really a nice people that really make it in that world and not have no problem! It’s really a diverse world.

I am sorry that so many negative things are being said but most of it is also very true. Americans do not know anything about the world most of the time, but the world is being exposed to the american thinking, news and actions everyday. We probably see more clearly sometimes how shit is over there due to the brainwashing that has happened in school and American society for such a long time. I am glad some people are waking up because no you are not the greatest country and nation in the world. So many better places to be. It could be the best and greatest but it is not due to the stupid choices made and the ignorance created. I don't know if that's how I would describe Norway, if that's really what you meant. This sense of community also exists in various parts of America, you know.

The third world comment was interesting. I can see why you reacted to that comment but objectively people in the US are very deprived compared to many other parts of the world. Terrible infant mortality and maternal mortality rates, no legal requirements for paid leave or maternity leave. No laws to prevent children living in homelessness, more people incarcerated than almost the rest of the world. There are massive areas of poverty and deprivation comparable to many third world countries. The US Government pays more per capita for health care, nearly twice as much as the next highest which is Germany which has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. People in the US die because they cannot afford insulin, just check the price comparison of insulin around the world, insulin from the same factory. That is the tip of the iceberg when comparing the US to the developed world. Yes, the US exhibits many third world traits.
The US actually USED to be the best following WW2. The beginning of the end of 'Murica The Great probably started with the killing of the Kennedys, and while the downhill trend was slow in the sixties and seventies, the downhill rush really took off with Nixon and Ronald Bloody Reagan. These days it seem like 'Murica is in a free-fall towards fascism, Hitler Nazi style.
The vast majority of 'Muricans are really nice and sensible people BUT they seem to have been brainwashed into some kind of helpless apathy, and the majority of sensible 'Muricans seem to be just sitting idly by while the American Experiment is disintegrating!
It is beginning to look like 'Murica is to big and diverseto be able to succeed at surviving...
Just look at Haaland, Ødegaard and Hovland. Brilliant athletics, but humble. Stay humble, stay grounded, thats the Norwegian mentality.
My brother went to high school in Austin, a school with almost 3000. He was picture perfect, played on three highschool teams, amaricans football (kicker), basketball and soccer. But the family he lived with forced him to go to church three times a week, even though he was not religious. He was not allowed to read novels, write letters, or have a diary. That was for girls. I wanted him to get a new family in San Francisco, but he gave up and moved home.

I'm not sure I agree with all these critcisms. I've been to the US several times. Americans are the friendliest people I've met anywhere in the world, and I've travelled ALOT. Just going to the grocery store - the smalltalk is just awesome. Some may call it shallow, but I loved it. Absolutely love speaking to staff in restaurants, staff at grocery stores, at bars - overall. Best people I've met anywhere in the world.
Also: If a person hurt her- og himself on the strett in Norway, I'm not entirely convinced Norwegians would rush to. Americans definitely would. There are ups and downs to every "social culture", and Norway definitely has its sicknesses in that department.
I know that many Americans would NOT help, especially if it was a serious accident, for fear of being involved in possible lawsuits.
Service-employees, as you describe, are dependent on good service since they live on tips. So it goes without saying that you experience them as pleasant.
But I can agree that most Americans are nice enough as individuals, but they can be obnoxious in larger groups - especially if they are in a foreign country
If most of the people have a mistrust in the government, there probably is a reason for it. It's not dangerous, at all. What is dangerous, is if the people trust the government so much that they can do anything they want without the people showing their mistrust and demanding change.

Corrupt governments exist everywhere, and it is a sign of a healthy people that they pick up on this and throw the government out. One does not indulge in immorality and criminal acts to avoid conflicts. Then you do what you have to, even if it means that the country faces troubled times.

Huge cred for the way you react to criticism. But is it criticism? Reality is that your healthcare system, prison system, school system, social care system does not work. People suffer with poverty, lack of education and people die cause they can't afford medical care. I think that is what's meant when "third world country" is being said. Cause that's the third world reality. Your country's problem is that all the troubled peoples screams for help it not heard through the loud voices of the few rich. If you lower your own voice you are able to hear others. I think thats the thought behind the "law of jante"

I love America so dearly, and my biggest dream is to move there with my family. I love the culture, the people, and especially the cars. American cars are the best without doubt. But that’s me 😅. But after a month there, driving from NY all the way to Miami, I was sold. The next trip now is spending some time in L.A, and drive the cost through Vegas and so forth. But without doubt the most amazing place on earth. ❤❤❤❤
