    They forgot to mention two important things: A compass (your phone could get destroyed or you could be out of coverage) and a good map (1: 50,000) over the area you plan to hike in.

      They do however show the compass/map when they show everything layed out.

      Coverage for a phone is not necessary if you use a navigation app with offline maps. A compass only helps you with good maps and the knowledge where you are. If I'm in doubt I take an additional navigation device with me (yes they were a thing in the old days), mark the starting point and the endpoint and have a backup this way. Most have a magnetic compass built in (like phones).

    For someone who does as much hiking as I do, you see all kind of weird things out in the mountains and so much trouble could be avoided if people heeded this kind of advice.
    I have on several occasions met people out there in need of assistance, simply because they went on hikes they weren't prepared for.
    The worst example is back in 2014, a group of american women were out hiking in Husedalen/Kinsarvik, 3 of them wearing high heels.
    I tried not to laugh at them and help them out as best I could, but that was kind of shocking that anyone would want to go out hiking in footwear like that.

    The weather in Norway and especially in the mountains can be EXTREME and change completely in a veeery short amount of time. We have a saying when it comes to hiking in Norway that is "Det er ingen skam å snu" that means there's no shame in going back. Having respect for the weather can be the difference between life and death.

    I would say she is slighlty over packing for a 1 day trip. You can solve a lot of the issues she is packing for by using rain resistant gear, like proper hiking trousers, and maintaining rain resistance on your backpack. How I would pack clothes for a 1 day trip: Find everything i need for the worst expected weather, then take off what I don't need for the weather at any given time and put in the backpack. Extra change of undergarments (socks in particular) in case of wetness. She also forgot navigation tools (compass, map). I would also bring a small axe or a knife.

    • @AudunWangen
      @AudunWangen 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've went on day trips with nothing but the rain resistant clothes on my back, and that is fine if you know the area and what you need. I drank water from the streams and ate berries, seeds and plants.

      Agree, for one day this is to much. Its nice to have,but you will manage fine with less.
      You need.
      Something to sit on.
      Food
      Water
      Kviklunsj
      And a tarp maybe :-)

      Yes was thinking the same thing, Instead of packing this much clothes I would rather recommend getting a survival bag/blanket to have in her backpack😅
      And if she packs this much for a day, what will she pack for a weekend?
      I grew up hiking and I can just hear the comments my dad would come with if I had this much stuff in my bag for a one day trip. The worst mistake you do is to pack way more then necessary. I have been that person that have taken things out of my friends backpack before we set off, and even taken things over in my own backpack along the trip because they are not used to hiking long hikes and are carrying more then they need...
      And yes knife, always a little knife and matches or a lighter😛

      Honestly I feel like she underprepared.
      You should prepare for at least being stuck in the mountains for two days even on a day trip, just in case of injuries, so the rescue people have time to locate you.
      Also, bring pain killers, it won't stop a broken leg from hurting, but every little bit helps in case of a injury...

    The weather can change very quickly up in the high mountains, you start to walk in nice sunny weather, and suddenly the temperature drops, it starts to be windy, dark clouds come in and it starts to rain, even snow.
    And you don't want to just be wearing shorts and a t-shirt if that happens.

    You can't walk for hours and hours in uneven, sometimes (in parts) rather boggy terrain, jump across streams and slick tree roots etcetera in your Converse. You'll be exhausted, have your feet wet and blistered, and possibly suffer a sprained ankle or slip and fall halfway to the goal. And if you're five miles from your car or cabin then, you're in deep trouble. Hiking boots is a must, even for hikes that aren't extreme by any stretch of the Norwegian imagination.
    Weather is unpredictable on higher altitudes everywhere on earth, even in America.

    05:23 Keep in mind the national motto/saying "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing." The reason for preparing like this, with all kinds of different clothing, is due to Norway's often unpredictable weather, that could go from sunny and cloudless sky to a sudden and unexpected downpour in as little as minutes. Weather forecasts can only do so much, so most people that look at the forecast will usually think "Alright, cool, but I won't be surprised if that changes during the day." as the weather is often prone to do here. If you go hiking on a sunny day as prepared as these two are, you may obviously feel more exhausted than if you hadn't brought all of those things, but on the other hand, bringing with you all of these things may be the difference between coming back to your car soaking wet from head to toe and practically being completely dry. That is not to mention the fact that if you end up stuck in the wilderness for whatever reason, being this prepared - or even better prepared - will significantly increase your chances of survival, whether by yourself or waiting for rescuers to find and rescue you.

    • @Luredreier
      @Luredreier 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I honestly feel like they where underprepared.
      Being prepared for being stuck for at least two nights is a good thing even on a single day trip, in case of bad weather or injury, as it'll likely take the rescue people time to find you in bad weather, and they might be unable to move in right away.

  • @Hammer1987
    @Hammer1987 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    "Is it that much of a threat to get wet?"
    Depends on the season, but getting wet on a hike is never fun. Besides just being uncomfortable getting wet just about guarantees that you will get blisters and sores on your feet. And even in the summer it can get pretty cold on overcast days up in the mountain and hypothermia is a threat. If you get wet during the winter you are in a life and death situation.
    Packing dry clothes for your hike is a literal lifesaver. Also having wind-blocking outer clothes is important because if the wind picks up the wind chill can sap your heat away even if you're dry.
    Every year we hear stories in the news of tourists getting in trouble up in the mountains because they didn't listen to advice from more experienced hikers.
    Hiking in the mountains is perfectly safe if you prepare and have some basic knowledge. But for the unprepared it is just a matter of time before they end up in serious trouble.

    • @Luredreier
      @Luredreier 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, pretty much...
      And honestly it's a good idea to be prepared for a night or two in the mountains even if you don't plan to, just in case of a injury.

  • @tordlindgren7666
    @tordlindgren7666 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    This is all common sense to most norwegians. And yes, the wetness is actually a threat. You can get hypothermia even during
    the summer if you're high up in the mountains (it's not very likely, but it can happen if the sun sets and you get stuck and so on). Also you put the toilet paper down into the hole you dug for your log laying, and then cover it with the dirt. It's paper after all, breaks down in a year or so if covered by dirt. One thing i'd bring in addition is a thermos of hot water so that you can make tea during the trip. It's a great way to recover from being cold while you hang up your wet clothes and change into dry ones.

    Yes, Norwegians love hiking, and we can have four seasons in a day as the weather can be unpredicatble even during the summer. I would also bring a map and compass as we enjoy going into forrests to pick berries and mushroms. You usually find them where there are no paths, and then you need a map and compass.

    So many.-So many tourists underestimate the Norwegian mountains. The weather change fast. Fog,wind and even snow can come in the summer. In the most popular routes. There are rescue teams walking constantly! Just because they think they can walk "in their normal shoes"
    to little clothes and no food. Hiking is hard. So be prepared. And we have no railings in Norway. So watch where you walking.

    Wool garments are often chosen because they breath and keep warm even when wet. Though, not everyone like wool (it's itchy) and choose other materials which have similar properties. Some also wear two pairs of socks in their hiking boots. A thin pair of cotton or wool socks and a thicker pair of wool socks on top. Supposedly, it's supposed to prevent chafing on the feet.

    I just realized that we actually dont have just one word for what americans call "hiking". I live 30 km outside of Oslo. Nature close by. And have a dog. We are in the forest every day. I'm not hiking. I'm just walking my dog. 30 min. is just a short walkie. A regular walk last 1-1.5 hrs. Still just walking. Not hiking. No need to bring anything with me. Sometime my mind drift away and it turn into a "solid walk". Still in nature and forest, but not hiking. Then it can turn into 2-3 hrs. I dont bring anything with me other than suitable clothing for the weather. I can get thirsty but so? Strangely enough I' survive..(!). When I plan to stay out 3-4 hrs, I usually pick a destination and make a "solid walk". Not hiking. It doesnt matter were it is. Then I can bring some water and snack (KVIKK LUNSJ++) and a sitting pad. In the wither maybe an extra sweeter. When I walk in the mountains. I do a full day mountain walk. THEN I pack like you see cause the weather can swift from sunny and warm to hard rain and coldness within minutes even thou the forecast said different. I MIGHT call that hiking, but If I would really call anything "hiking" it will include spending at least one night outside. If not.. I'm simply just taking a walk of various degrees..

    02:56 Quite possibly, yes. It's important to note that a lot of school will take classes on field trips, and often on these field trips, lots of walking in and off the terrain is involved, more than often involving even hiking up various local mountains or into the various local forests, etc. This will obviously mean that the parents will be informed that proper hiking boots are recommended for their child's comfort, and most that have the money for hiking boots will buy a pair - or two - for their children. Aside from the children going on school trips, walking up a mountain or in the forest is good exercise in general, so a lot of adults will buy a pair - or two - of good hiking boots for this purpose, while others might buy them simply for the sake of being prepared 'just in case.'

      Your comment reminds me of a story a few years ago when a German high-school class had to be rescued down from an area in the Narvik/Skjomen mountains .... a quite remote area and at an altitude well over 1000 meter. They were very poorly equipped, had hardly any food and had lost their direction ...hence couldn't find their way. A random Norwegian hiker discovered that group of young people who walked around in shorts ....and at the same time complained how cold it was ....and how extremely hard/difficult it was to walk in the mountains there. They were simply clueless about what they had embarked on of mountain hiking in northern Norway.
      Their teachers explanation / excuse afterwards was that it was the Norwegian mountains and "unpredictable" weather that was to blame for the situation they ended up in ....not themselves and their blunt ignorance.... They had dreamed for a long time about doing such a trip ...they said .....and they had even ...in advance....had a training trip where they had made a hike in Denmark...
      ....well....well....well....what a genius way of doing things ......having a training hike in Denmark...of all places...!!!!

    Most Americans think it's weird when Norwegians want to walk 2 blocks. Americans have an unhealthy obsession with cars. It's almost like they've forgotten they have 2 legs. Most American cities aren't made for walking and some places it's not an option at all. Norwegians in general are Lars Monsen compared to Americans.

    Norwegian here! This is all relative to what kind of hike you are going on, for how long and if you know the area! I go on 4-5 hours of hiking with my dogs almost every day and dont really bring anything for myself cause i'll be back home afterwards - i just put on the clothes that fits the weather and off we go! 🐕‍🦺

      @Luredreier 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For 4-5 hours I'd recommend preparing being stuck for a day or two, in case of a injury the amount of area you can cover in 4-5 hours would take a while to search.
      Preparing for a week for a day trip is excessive however.
      Just 2 days, just in case.
      Rescue people will find you and be able to bring you further supplies if needed if you're within a days walk of civilization.

    I would assume every norwegians person owns a pair of mountain boots at least once in their life. Maybe you outgrew them and never got new ones, or your life is so busy that you haven't gotten time to be outdoors and that is why you haven't gotten around to getting new boots. But go around asking if we own or have at one point owned a pair of mountain boots the answer is yes

    Wow! It seems the only time Americans walk is to a fast food joint. I love Tylers amazement at everything. The American term 'going to the bathroom' always sounds silly to me. Even more so in the context of hiring across the wilderness, twenty miles away from the nearest 'bathroom'.
    I've been a hill walker for fifty years and I usually walk for anything between a week and three weeks at a time, not a day. Those people in the video are idiots. I would carry about a quarter of the gear they have, probably less. A CUSHION? A SHOVEL? WTF. If you feel you need all the gadgets they displayed, then perhaps you shouldn't leave the house 😂

    They forgot to mention map and compass which is very important.
    Also bring a friend that can carry for you all that stuff.....since she is doing a bit of a overkill....
    ....and...well....what about weather information before the time of internet...??? You must be very young....
    Let me inform you that internet didn't invent weather forecast .... Modern / scientific based forecast has existed for around a 100 year now. Forecast was multiple times daily broadcast on radio .....and TV when that came around to be.
    By the way it was the Norwegian physicist Vilhelm Bjerknes who ....among else....developed the scientific basis for modern meteorology / weather forecasting. Specifically describing the systems with weather fronts (cold/warm fronts) ...and how they move. In science was this way of describing weather systems referred to as the Bergen - school. ....and it stood the test of time ...and is still the way today's meteorology describe and model weather forecasts.

    Can you for the love of god stop saying.. To Norwegians.. 90% of the time the To Norwegians line should be.. To Scandinavians. And yes all Scandinavians tens to have clothes for hiking and special shoes and bags as well. All you seen in here is stuff i had maybe 20 items for each thing since 1978. You keep buying this stuff. The Fjäldräv or Eastpack rucksack will akways be a thing here. We take them to the music festivals too, so tou can go through 30 or more in your lifetime even when it says 30 year warranty on it. Nothing last when it gets used by a scandi kid. 😊

    No, she was saying that having a dry backup pair of socks is good in case your feet and your first pair gets wet.
    While wet wool still provide heat you do *not* want wet feet while *walking* on them...

    Not necessarily cookies.
    I'd actually recommend special mixes of nuts and dry fruits (and possibly chocolate) especially madd for hikes.
    15:41
    Honestly I feel like they're underprepared.
    They didn't prepare for being stuck in the mountains for a few nights, either due to the weather or injuries.
    They didn't mention a map and compass for navigation.
    And the food was only enough for a day.
    Honestly this was stuff for a one hour hike at most...

    Actually they didn't hike in the old days. It's something we "invented" around the 70 ties. (+-) Remember most jobs in the early days were physical jobs. We didn't have the need for exercise. But outdoor activity was "normal". It's became popular over the years. ( It could be a response to our interest for outdoor sport) skiing for example...

      As a mother of four, I can tell some of the things she had, such as the spade, toilet paper and the blister package, it will be enough to bring one - just make sure the family stick together. It helps to let the children take responsibility for their own packing as soon as they are old enough. If they forget something, it's an experience they learn from - so you'd rather help them with mittens and socks when they've had a taste of the consequences of forgetting.
