As an American I don't know about Norwegian companies. Today I am very interested in learning about the most famous and popular companies in Norway that Americans have never heard of. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

If im not mistaken i believe the Burj Khalifa as well.
I think that The Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco is also painted with Jotun, at least it was at some time.
And the world's tallest building, the Bird Khalifa in Dubai, is painted with jotun paint.

The Kongsberg Group deals in many sectors, weapons R&D is just one among many. Saying it like that makes it seem like weapons R&D is the only thing they do, even though it is just one half of one unit under Kongsberg Gruppen.

Kongsberg are a world leading high tech manufacturer / developer within several areas. There are three main areas:
- defence and aerospace
- maritime equipment and navigation tech
- computer hardware/software i.e. simulators for oil and ship sectors
Kongsberg most "famous" products in today's world with war and with an urge to build up defence capacities are the anti ship missile system NSM (Naval Strike Missile) and the mobile air-defence system named NASAMS (Norwegia-Advanced-Surface-to-Air-Missile-System).
NSM is the superior naval missile ....and USA is a big customer. Both their navy and their land based coastal defence are right now implementing these systems. Other countries who have bought these are for example Poland, Romania, Australia, Malaysia.
When it comes to the anti air missile system NASAMS is also there USA a customer ...and has already used them for 15 years to protect your capital Washington DC.
Many missile systems has been bought and donated to Ukraine ....they has been vital for protection against Russian air attack with planes, missiles and drones.
Mustad used to produce nails, and hardware, but today is known as the world's largest manufacturer of fishing hooks, which are exported to more than 160 countries. In some contries Mustad simply means hook.

I'm Norwegian and I didn't know Kahoot was a Norwegian company. While on the geeky side of this topic, Opera was one of the most used webbrowsers out there until Chrome happened, and we also have Funcom which brought us games like Dreamfall, The Longest Journey, Anarchy Online, Age of Conan, Conan Exiles etc.

Norwegians don't brag and don't brand, which is bad. Case in point? Yara. Even in Norway, people don't know what they do, but they invented global food supply and doubled human presence on Earth. It's not a small thing. They also made Norway the richest country in history. Because Kristian Birkeland and Sam Eyde discovered how to get nitrogen out of the air using electricity, thus eliminating food shortage. This was in 1903. In 1905 we became a free country and Eyde was able to convince the Norwegian government to invest massively in renewable energy because it would be a permanent source of income. Then in 1910, a German chemist named Fritz Haber was inspired to see if he could improve the Birkeland-Eyde process by means of chemistry. And he did, which is why we now depend on the Haber-Bosch process rather than the Birkeland-Eyde process to feed people. But by then, Norway was all in on renewable energy and that's why we also became global leader in aluminium and hydrogen.
It seriously pisses me off when people say Norway became rich because of oil and gas. Norway became rich by ending global food shortage. But as I said, even Norwegians don't know this, which proves that we are terrible at marketing ourselves. As a techno guy, I would love to bring up The Internet and The World Wide Web, but how do those things compare to global food supply? Norway is _made_ by Norsk Hydro and Yara (which used to be the same company).
Exactly. Add that Simula is the first object-oriented programming language in the world, but most Norwegians have no idea how Norwegians broke ground by inventing things that everyone uses today.

But there was a cold war and it was highly secret until 2004 because of Operation Pine Forrest. If the Russians knew what we were doing, then they would've attacked, so it's a good thing that Norway flew under the radar.

Norsk Hydro at Vemork in Telemark should be pretty well known not only for their products, but also for the saboteur actions during WW2.
There are films and tv series about the Norwegian saboteurs blowing up the heavy water plant preventing the germans plans to produce the Atom bomb.

And to tie in with what OP wrote, Hydro in Rukjan manufactured chemicals related to the production of fertilizer, initially potassium nitrate from arc-produced nitric acid and later ammonia, hydrogen, and heavy water. If non of that is directly for consumers, nothing is.

It is based in Miami these days, but was founded in Norway and still has a strong realationship to Norway.
It is the 4 biggest cruise line in the world.
And Electrocompaniet and Hegel, for those who are into HiFi will know this.

@@guleri It's no more than 20 years since Norsk Hydro was split into Hydro (aluminium) and Yara (chemicals and fertiliser) . Both of them are world leading within their area.
Yara is very well known within agriculture ....they are represented in more than 120 countries.
Not many Norwegians left in NCL .....they are since long been overtaken by others.

Helly Hansen may not be very well known - but the logo is HH and it is sold a lot - also in the USA.
This is quite niche, but there are quite a few Norwegian yarn brands that are well known in the international knitting/crochet/threadworks community. Like Sandes yarn and Hillesvåg yarn.
And if you are into outdoor clothing for hiking, winter activities etc., Norrøna has high quality stuff. There are more than a 100 stores in the USA. Stores are found mainly in Europe and Northern America, so maybe not world famous.

The reason that Sailors are mentioned according to HH is the safety gear made for ships and boats. Chances is high that if you buy a safety/floating west, that it's made of either HH or Regatta.
Back in the day, Mustad was a pretty known company all over the world, for their fish hooks, nails, paper clips etc. Think they're still the world's biggest fish hook supplier.

I love how he talks about Kongsberg as a "Green saving the planet company" While in reality it one of the world's largers arms manufacturers, including cluster munitions and smart bombs and large scale weapon's systems.
It’s not a company or brand. But the cheese knife is a world-known product that was made in Norway.
As a Norwegain. I think that a lot of companies goes under the rader for average consumers, but we are the richest of the scanfinavian countries because of companies like Equinor with are the main delivers for gas and oli to UK and Germany. We also have multiple big salmon companies that deliver farmed salmon, companies like Novasea. Even Jotun that you looked into are a really big company for normal house painting in europe, but is even bigger and industry leader when it comes to industrial paint for container ships and appliances. However there is no discussion that Norway is most famous for oil/gas and salmon. Liked the video a lot btw ☺️
Norway's largest companies mostly sell to other corporations and countries, so it's not as well known by the general public, but still huge once they start looking for signs of those companies.
Most famous Norwegian brand in the US is probably the “Stressless” chair. From the Ekornes furniture company (no longer Norwegian)
When Norsk Hydro is mentioned, it is important to have a bit of history:
Norsk Hydro (the oil and gas division) merged with Statoil (oil and gas) in 2004, which we know as Equinor today. Norsk Hydro's Fertilizer Department became Yara International in this context. At the same time, Norsk Hydro's seafood investments was taken over by the seafood giant Marine Harvest (The worlds biggest), which is today called Mowi. (In other words, the Norwegian government made the big mistake of selling out of the seafarming industry (salmon) in Norway before this industry became really (realy!) big. (And as "thanks for this", the seafood producers are taxed really hard today). What is left of (Norsk) Hydro is today an aluminum industry and Electricpower producer (Hydroelectric power plant). (Today, Salmar Farming AS is going to overtake Mowi as the world's largest salmon producer , with production of over 211,000 tonnes of gutted salmon). Norway currently produces 1.5 000 000 tonnes of salmon a year, which is over 50% of the total in the world! (And the government sold out in 2004..!)
(Norsk Hydro produced heavy water for nuclear weapons development during and after WWII on its factory in (Rjukan-Norway), but that's another and slightly darker history we'll cover later..)

Norsk Hydro is a complicated on. They where know (pre and ww2 era) for creating(inventing modern) Fertilizer and heavy Water ( Movie: The Heroes of Telemark 1965), now the Fertilizer part of Hydro is named Yara. Hydro now is know for its high quality Aluminum and high tec production to cut on energy consumption and pollutions.
Another fundfact is that Norway through the pension fund owns part of almost 9000 companies in the world, like Apple, Nestlé, Microsoft and Samsung. So we do own companies with huge names, products and impact on most people of the world.
We also produce a lot of ammunition and weapons via the Kongsberg Group

Øveraasen is a Norwegian brand of heavy duty snow clearing equipment. I once saw it in a movie about snow clearing in the Rocky Mountains so they exist in the US. Paxter is a Norwegian electric mail and package distribution vehicle that I know have been exported to NZ and UK. In Norway they are used by the Post Office.
Voss is an artesian water, and not as you thought an artesan water, Tyler. In my family, the Norwegian brand best known to us is Colin Archer, the century-old shipwright company. My kids and grandkids sail one my gramps bought when I was just a toddler. It's still as safe and solid as it was 70 yrs ago when new.
Missile from Kongsberg. The US Air Force is planning to buy 48 JSM (Joint Strike Missile) cruise missiles for its F-35 Lightning II fighters, according to a budget request for the fiscal year 2024. The JSM is a stealthy, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed by Norway’s Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KDA) and Raytheon.
JSM is based on NSM. Kongsberg has also started working on the SuperSonic Strike Missile (3SM) Tyrfing, but 10+ year until it's ready for use. More famously currently is probably their NASAMS system, protecting Ukraine along with Patriot. And also protecting the US president in DC.

One time I visited Bangkok(capital of Thailand) I saw a youth using two Jotun paint buckets as drums. He was pretty good at it, too.
Norwegian paint is formulated to be able to take a beating from weather. And the 2pack ship paints and their hull treatments are very, very good. Using a good coating on the hull means it can be in service for much longer before the next drydock visit.

Kongsberg Group made the first Fire and Forget missile, the Penguin. Small but deadly. Travelled at Mach 0.9, skimmed the surface of the water, and used an IR camera for target aquisition. In theory it could even hit a fast, maneuvering MTB or destroy a Corvette.

When I visited Florida a few years ago I saw Voss water in a lot of shops. Voss is not sold in Norway, but I have seen it in the UAE. The fertilizer is now sold under the Yara name with a viking ship as their logo. The Norwegian airline was reorganized after the pandemic and was split in two, Norwegian inside Europa and Norse for intercontinental flights, mostly from Europe to the US.

To be fair, trying to find something that is on the same level as IKEA and Lego is pretty hard. That's Apple and Disney weight class.
- Voss water sold in the US today is not the same Voss water they sold years ago. Today Voss water in the US comes from a water distilling plant outside New York. Only the brand name is the same.
- Jotun is a global leader in ship coating. Pretty much all ships are painted in Jotun paint.
- Helly Hansen is one of the largest suppliers of offshore apparel.
The bottle water scam is so anti consumer. I live in Oslo Norway. And we have good quality water. All my life my main water source has been tap water. I try to avoid buying bottle water if I can. It is just wasted money. And I also shocked to hear that Voss water is not from the municipal source they used in the beginning, But well a fool and his money are soon to be parted. While the people of the village of Vatnestrøm in Iveland municipality. Can still drink shower, and flush their toilets in the original Voss water good for them
It is nothing wrong with Voss water. Besides being heavily overpriced it is just water. The source of Voss water is also the municipal water source for a place in Norway(village of Vatnestrøm in Iveland municipality). Those people have the honor of showering and flush their toilet in Voss water.

Norway focused on politics and such after the war. We built our country with welfare. Instead of privat sectors to run the economy, such as mainly Volvo, and maby ikea, in sweden, the Norwegian government "owns" the most of our economy itself. By having the main shares in the national oil produsing conpany. Also by continuously bying shares and stocks all over the world, to keep growing. This way, no privat companies could ruin our economy. But our oil fund, or "the governmet pension fund" is one of the largest "companies" in the world.

A friend of mine was walking around Japan, when he sent me a picture from a dock area, boxes upon boxes of Norwegian fish brand names. All of it sashimi. A few of them from brands that a pretty local to our area too. Which is kinda funny.

The Norwegian Oil Fund (Government pension fund abroad.) On average, the fund owns 1.5 percent of all listed companies in the world.
i dont think norway has that "one" defining brand, but rather, we have a finger in a lot of stuff, we have several world leading industries, so unless you are familiar with those industries, knowing the brand names would be kind of rare.
personally i have worked as a laboratory techician at both Jotun, at their Research and Development laboratory in Sandefjord, and it was where i did and completed my apprenticeship.
i have also been employed at Yara (which is now the Fertilizer part of what was formerly known as Norsk Hydro) in their quality insurance laboratory, working directly with the production site in Porsgrunn, and fun fact, that site alone produces over 7000 tons of mineral fertilizer (NPK) and about 3000 tons of lime nitrate fertilizer each day.
and i can confirm that in both places the work enviroment and work ethics is incredible.
"Bacalhau noruego" , means "codfish from Norway" as in the best codfish, therefore, the best of the best, when applied to other things. Tine , Jarlsberg cheese is sold across the US ,found it in NY LA Miami SanF and in most of europe. Minnesota has stores that sell brunost too..
Helly Hanson is an outdoor goods chain of shops. We have them in the UK and they sell things like tents, ski ware and hiking boots. I suspect they are in America, it's just that if you are not an outdoorsman of some kind or work outdoors you probably wouldn't be familiar with them.

Norsk Hydro has been splitter up into Norsk Hydro and YARA.YARA is the company that produce fertilizer. But YARA was a part of Norsk Hydro before. Equinor is the stae oil and gass company and was one of the most profitable comanyes in the world in 2023
Norway is probably most known for oil (Equinor), ship construction, maritime industry like fish and their huge merchendary fleet. They are even considered a superpower at seas, even when only having 5 million in population.
Royal Caribbean Cruise lines and Norwegian Cruise Lines were originally Norwegian and Royal Caribbean is still partly Norwegian. Helly Hansen, Jotun, Kongsberg weapons, , Voss, Yara
You also have Kari Traa, Sweet Protection and Bula. Helly Hansen also 13:18 have a good position in USA alpine/outdoor market.
So Tørrfisk / Klippfisk is actually eaten a lot in Norway, specially the coastal areas ( used a lot up north in particular). So that statement was not true, also the cod fish itself is eaten a lot in Norway. The thing is, it will not be displayed and sold in the same way as here in Portugal (live in Portugal) because for us it’s normal and for them it’s quality fish from Norway. I did live up north in Norway on an island for about 4 years or so and there people often dried their own fish from fresh.
About Sushi, I would never eat sushi after all the horror stories about the worms (also I don’t eat much fish and for sure not almost raw or raw).

Fun facts:
The salmon fished in east asia was historically ridden with disease and was unfit for sushi as it couldn't be eaten raw, also making it be seen as dirty. Then in the late 20th century, norwegian salmonfarmers itroduced norwegian salmon as a clean high quality fish, fit for sushi.
Also when it comes to the dairy industry, norwegian redspotted cattle is seen as a premium breed as it is the cow race that is very profittable, as it is the breed that is most sucsessfully bread to produse high quantitys of both milk and meat in high quality.

A "tine" (pronounced roughly TEE-nuh) is a traditional container for food stuffs. The Tine logo is a stylized tine.

So one can say famous for inventions and supplyer and producer of natural resources, given the nature we have. But brand name in a consumer world? Nope.

Swix is a very popular Norwegian brand for wintersport quipment and gear. Everyone who's into skiing and wintersports knows about that brand, world wide. You can often see it in stores like REI and Marmot in the US. Toko is their tool brand with gliders and stuff.
First time I came across VOSS water was at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 2003. I got so surprised over that overpriced tap water. 😅 So if you are curios about how our tap water testes like, you can basically just purchase a bottle of Voss.
I love your selection of coconut water though, especially the pink organic one. It's so good 😍 I always buy that when I'm in Usa and can't get fresh coconut water.
The tap water in US I wouldn't drink though. It's unfortunately loaded with fluoride and so many other harmful chemicals. That's why most of my family and friends over there have some kind of a filter system in their home.

Voss you buy for the bottles, they're expensive as an alternative to Bonaqua or Dasani, but the bottles are excellent for reuse, so at family dinners, you can serve water from a VOSS water bottle, instead of a carafe, or jug. It's really fancy tap/municipal water anyway, (they made a well 30 feet from the municipality's well, just to not actually being tapwater like they were in the beginning)
The best is the "North Sea company" (for now, in the future it will be the "Barents Sea company"). 😄

I think that was their main reason from changing the name from Statoil to Equinor, as they wanted to be known for something other than oil. They do have big wind farms and things like that, but I suspect their main income is still from oil and gas.
