I think as long as you aren’t lookin to track the car, the 86 would be a very good choice for the price. Otherwise, Type R all the way even though it is much more expensive. Much more reliable, almost 50% more power, AWD, better brakes, better suspension, better gearbox, it’s kinda a no brainer. And it looks way cooler in my opinion but that’s subjective. All this being said I am likely going to get a GR86 as long as nothing happens in a few years.
GR86 BABY!!! We have one, and it's super badass. They're both great cars, but RWD is a whole different thing. Tint takes care of any glare, and we had that done the first week. We had the whole nose and a few other parts wrapped in clear film, too. Mirror caps and touch zones on the rear spoiler. It's always fun and doesn't hesitate to overtake and pass in traffic. BUT, it is nice to have 4 doors and more space.😅😂😊
To all people that are car lovers: take my advice. Dont waste time with FWD! Just dont. Whats gonna happen is that you're gonna want more power and after about 400hp fwd is annoying as hell. Fwd tire life is about 3 months with Summer tires and you still wont hook. Suspension geometry gets wacky and you'll need stiff motor mounts which increases nvh. Dont get me wrong, I love a good Civic type R and Elantra N but torque steer drives me nuts. Ive had all platforms with decent power. Fwd is just a no go for sports cars. It took me 15 years to finally concede to this fact. So all you young kids and all others please go either Rwd or Awd. Thank you!
I’ve owned both and currently own the GR86. Overall the Type R is better, but the GR86 is still a lot of fun. Give the 86 a turbo from the factory and I’ll take the 86 all day
GR86 all day.. not that the CTR would be a poor choice but as much as I love my GRC, simple lightweight RWD has a feeling that can't be replicated. My father, son and I are still waiting for a lightly wrecked 86 either first or second gen and throwing in a 3UZ 😅

But, if it comes to shove, I'll pick up the GR86 or BRZ end gen any day over the type R.

You can have the dealership turn off the ASC by hooking it up to their computer or you can spend 5 minutes and DIY it. Pop off the panel on the passenger side by the door and unplug the ASC, zip tie up the cable so it doesn't rattle and voilà, you're done.
@RaitisRides I agree but unfortunately it isn't. Now if an owner happens to have Techstream then they can do it through software on their own. There's also a company that has an OBD dongle that will allow you to turn it off along with a lot of other stuff, mainly it gives you auto locking doors.
The frist 3 things to do to an FL5 to make it the way it should have came from the factory are 1) rear motor mount 2) front resonator delete, 3) drop in filter. These 3 mods make the FL5 feel, and sound damn near perfect.
in my mind, the Si and the 86/BRZ are more in the same class. I'm very happy to say that by the grace of God, loving parents, and some hard work, I've been an owner of a '24 Civic Si for a little over a month now. I'm absolutely over the moon with it, super intuitive handling, enough HP for my first car and to have a little fun, and I'd like to say that your initial coverage of the car in 2022 was a huge pushing point for me to pull the trigger on it Joe.
Having test driven the Gr86, owning a Gt86 in the past and now owning the fl5 ctr...the type r is the most precise machine I've driven. I feel it handles just as well in the corners and has the power to accelerate out of the corners.
Well, I bought the GR86 Trueno in 2024! Such a fun little car! I love the Civic Type-R so maybe that next year! 🙂 Or a C8 as those used prices are falling like crazy!
Ironically fk8 type R, Elantra N and Toyota86/Brz all compete directly against each other in National SCCA Autocross in DS class. They all have strengths and weaknesses….This is a great comparison
I have a GR86 and it is a blast. It is so much fun on a twisty road. It is such a pure driving machine. But it could feel low on power if you like straight line speed. The Type-R is also very special.
As someone who has an FK8 Type-R and a Miata, I love both but if i had to choose, could never give up the power the Type-R has for the 86/BRZ or anything else similar. That’s despite the FWD being considered a disadvantage, the Type-R is still so damn fun to drive.
Good and helpful information on this deep dive. One thing that stands out to me is what a good job the Honda people did in turning a nice economical compact car, the Civic, into a high-performance sports car. The GR 86 is only a sports car. It is ridiculous that you can't just turn off the pumped in noise if you don't want to hear it. If you're spinning, you're not winning your just impressing the wrong people. I've got to remember that Joe.

As a previous owner of the GR86, if you want to turn heads, you get the GR86. They are still rarer than other sportscars (I blame the dealerships) so you'll be noticed more than in a Type R.
Owning a GR86 and a DE5 ITS (same as the FL5 CTR) and I couldn't decide which one is better. They both complement each other's shortcomings. I know one thing... The GR86 will put more smiles on your face per mile driven. I am still deciding if I should supercharge the GR86 to make it faster but not crazy desperate about it. I may just drive up to the end of its factory warranty and then start adding force induction.
I'm with you on the EV thing. The Ionic 5 N is currently the best effort from an EV maker to mimic the sound of an "ice" car. But I'm old school. To me proper driver involvement is the key. Personally, I think Porsche is taking a risk with the EV replacements for the Boxster/Cayman. I don't care if it will do 0-60 at the speed of light. No EV motor can ever replace the melodious sound of a Porsche flat six. Same thing for Lotus. Once they retire the Emira with an EV replacement it will be a sad day.
I'm going to be that guy and say a bmw x40i xdrive. A new gr86 is like 36k around me. Used FK8s are in the 40s. I rather get a bmw with the b58. Faster car with the touch of luxury that makes the daily nicer to drive. You miss the manual but I'm not crazy for one in Boston traffic after driving an 8th gen si in it. The gr86 motor is very limited in power due to the motor, drivetrain, and transmission. The type r is still fwd and it leaves a lot to be desired. Most high hp and high torque civics go awd swap anyways so these cars are really meant to be enjoyed semi stock with not too many power mods.
Choosing between these two is not so easy. Ultimately, I went for an Acura type s (over type r as I could get at list price), but the transmission/powerunit was a big factor in my choice. I just didn’t feel the 86brz flat 4 was special enough. Plus I am lucky to own a Miata as a second car so that factored also. The type s/r is a quite a different beast when you drive it hard being front wheel drive. As Mr. R points out, getting all that power down in 1st gear isn’t straightforward. In fact you have to ease the power in otherwise it will squirm those front wheels, especially on a damp road. Also, if you are really aggressive with the throttle when on the move and those front wheels are not straight you will get a lot of torque steer, which can be a bit unnerving at first. Under normal driving though the Honda hides all these traits very well. IMO If handling/driving dynamics is your main priority go 86brz. If the power train feel/ engineering and some practically is important then go type r/s.
I traded in my FL5 for a GR86 Premium performance pack. I’m so happy with my decision. I don’t want to bash the Type R. It is an awesome vehicle, but it’s a very serious car. I say grab the base to premium discounted and enjoy it for what it is. It’s 30-32k and gives thrills worthy of a 15k discount from a TypeR. Or for 35k buy the new Tesla model 3
My BRZ is my stepping stone to Boxster GTS, may be i would still keep one for track. With type R, that's pretty much peak of the FWD. For someone who needs do everything car, type R is great but not for me.

I say grab the base to premium discounted and enjoy it for what it is. It’s 30-32k and gives thrills worthy of a 15k discount from a TypeR. Or for 35k buy the new Tesla model 3
I like the way you think except for the Tesla part!
was deciding between the 86 and the fk8. went with the fk8 due to oil pressure problem the 86 has.
Honda needs to bring back the coupes!
GR86 my choice
It is such a great car!
Wheel hopping because it's too tight and front wheel drive. Front wheel drive cars have a tendency to push.
My BRZ is my stepping stone to Boxster GTS, may be i would still keep one for track. With type R, that's pretty much peak of the FWD. For someone who needs do everything car, type R is great but not for me.
I'd go with the Honda.
Sounds great!
Type R!!!!
Great vid!
Any problems with paint chips on the Type R from too thin paint?
Joe and Lori and Steve keep up the good work real true and I love the video 👍
You are the best Dominick!
It ain't a tight car if it ain't a type r.
Where would you place the 2021 STI when compared to these two?
Type R indeed. I have an FRS since 2013 and having a sporty 4 doors is very practical.
This is an excellent point
Civic TypeR awesome
Two great cars
You are so very right about that!
Every time I get in my BRZ (23) it's great fun
That’s an easy one type R for the power GR 86 is nice, but not enough power.
Both thrilling cars I would have both but driving brz instead 😊 and get excited every time I drive and modify it
easy choice for me, Type R
I traded my GR86 on an FL5 and never looked back. The GR86 is a great car, but the FL5 is orders of magnitude better and is one of the best cars I've ever driven.
Wouldn't say best car. Mustang gt 10sp I've driven is the better car I think. Way more fun and handles quite well, surprisingly..
@@davothegreat9990 Well I was speaking only for myself, however no automatic Mustang is going to touch an FL5 in terms of driving experience and engagement. Autos get boring, even the fast ones.
@@GTR003121 you're dreaming. Completely false.
@@davothegreat9990 Have fun with your automatics 🤡
@@davothegreat9990 🤡🤡🤡
The fact a front wheel drive car is so good in so many ways that the ppl choose it over a R wheel drive Toyota is very telling. Honda got it right
This is true but there is a $10k price difference
@@RaitisRides true
You’re so right Joe, EV’s will never be my friend either.
Thanks man! Great minds think a like!
TFL showed a lease in Colorado for a 150 mile range Nissan Leaf for $9 a month, I don't care what anyone says, I'm taking that appliance

Remember, you can swap the Acura Integra Type S suspension module which apparently is much better feeling. Speaking of the Acura TypeS I saw one the other day and tbh it makes the TypeR look un-pretty. The typeS has a much better presence IMHO.
That is very true! I love the look of the Integra Type S for sure!
