      No supermarket chain can truly copy a family owned nursery business.
      When the supermarket chains started getting plants on consignment or sale and return, the real plant people just grew their own plants to compensate, cutting out the middle man.
      A niche business where years of experience and knowledge sets you apart from the herd.

      Most of the garden centers near me have closed for the season (mid April to June 30). None of them carry anywhere near the variety of plants, pots, statuary, decorative items etc that Andrews provide their customers. So hard to find replacements for plants that haven't survived from their initial planting or are struggling. The average first frost here is mid-October but is often much later. So often in August, gardeners are looking to "refresh' their gardens but it is a wait until mid-late September when some stores/farm stands bring in mum plants.

    • @debbienolan611
      @debbienolan611 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mmelven8558I can’t believe they don’t carry fall items either. I usually plant perennials around now.

    • @MelSchmidt7
      @MelSchmidt7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree about our local garden centers. I'm in Pennsylvania, but right about now, most of the plants that are left are gangly and unkept, and if you know how to love 'em and cut 'em back you can usually get a good bargain, but most of the time, there is very little left to even choose from until the mums come out. So frustrating because there are so many things that could go in now to freshen up beds and containers. I think I need to take a field trip!

      I overwinter my purple fountain grass in the garage. I just bring in the whole container and water every 3 weeks. I keep my garage at around 50 degrees. I also bring in my diamond frost euphorbias, penny vines, petunias, canna lilies and geraniums.
      I do have grow lights that I keep the sun loving plants under and the shade plants I put under a table or back away from the grow lights. I keep a couple fans running to circulate the air.
      I also inspect for pests and they all get sprayed with neem oil or insecticidal soap before bringing into the garage. I also bring in my fuchsias - I cover them loosely with a brown paper bag and keep soil moist.
      Been doing this for years~ if you decide to try… don’t worry if they don’t look their best when January- February rolls around because when you put them out after the frost in the spring they will start to wake up and start putting on new growth. Check them and clean up any dead foliage or decaying branches ( plants like geraniums) spray with neem if you notice any pests.
      I’m in zone 8b PNW

      I brought in an ornamental pepper plant that I just loved and don’t see much. I wanted to keep it going. Put it in my basement windowsill watered it and it looked like it was gonna die but still had a little green. So I kept it fertilized it a little with an organic fertilizer put it out in late spring and by golly it’s going to town! Try to overwinter your plants if it doesn’t work what have you lost that you wouldn’t have anyway if you composted it But if it does work viola! The plant you love is back for you! Only do a few to cut back on bug infestation and too much work. I only overwintered the pepper plants. Good Luck🍀 and give it a try. Ps you can overwinter in your upstairs home too. But protect your floors if you put them on wood floors. Better yet buy a low holder for them. And only do the ones you love.

      I was raised on a farm where various types of berries were grown. My aunt who helped with picking always wore a large straw hat, long sleeved shirt and gloves with the finger tips cut off. I always thought that was "silly". But she lived to be 89 and still had beautiful porcelain skin (she was a redhead), very few wrinkles and almost no "age spots". Me, on the other hand at a much younger age, am paying the price of all the sun exposure😢.

    Hey Laura, if there was ever a family I'd love to be a part of, it's yours. You guys, working together, having fun together, enjoying each other's company, that's what we all want. What beautiful souls you all are! Your mom is the best mom and wife I've ever seen in my 70 years of living. God bless you all! 🥰🙋‍♀️❤️🌻

    I appreciate the perfect storm here that Laura grew up loving gardening, inspired by her mom. Then worked in the garden center and learned about displays and etc. Then got a TH-cam channel and property that she can really apply all of that love and talent to share with the world! No wonder you guys have 1.75 million subscribers!

    I can’t believe you do all of that in the heat! It has been 90 degrees here and I don’t even want to go outside. The humidity where I live gets pretty swampy though for sure. I really enjoy watching the garden center videos. That’s sort of my dream job … if I could find one in a place where it never gets hot. 😂

    I love your energy and the the way you talk it’s fast and clear I have tried to watch other garden shows but when you talk to much and keep repeating yourself I get bored and just can’t stay focused you just get it out and keep moving Love It The garden center looked beautiful and you guys worked hard
