    I like the idea of one tree closer to the fire pit and leave the other side empty. If you go with a nice large shade tree you’ll get a bit more of a natural vibe “outside” the Hartley and Brick patio area!

    • @terri.schenk
      @terri.schenk ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think you’re right, from an aesthetic perspective it would be more natural and less contrived. There’s already so much formality. This way would balance the yard perfectly.

    • @estella2007
      @estella2007 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree. It would look more natural with just one tree on the side by the fireplace area. There is so much going on in this space. Whatever you choose will be beautiful in the end.

      I thought a leaf canopy near the fireplace are while an evergreen on the other side would gently frame the Hartley and not feel that contrivance. Lovely all around.

    Have to agree with Aaron. Reshaping that grass by hand is hard labor. Having the ability to take it out will give you possibilities you hadn't imaged. Having watched your videos for sometime, I know Laura is a visual person. So #teamnograss That being said... I think a hydrangea hedge would be beautiful😅 I just imagine a georgous mass of puffy blooms leading you to the greenhouse. Magical. I think whatever you decide will be as lovely as the rest of your property is. As Laura says "if you don't love it, it's okay to remove it". 🌳

    Hi laura, love the arrangement, what a sweet gesture from that young man and also from you to offer your artistic services. About the sketch, i think instead of the two big trees you might want to use evergreens that are on the wispy fluffy side so they don't block the gorgeous hartley view, and swap where you intended to plant the evergreen with the big tree just in case you may lose the other tree canopy. Can't wait to see how the space will evolve. Ps: please try to save as many roses as you can near the fireplace 😢especially the iceberg , they are a marvel❤❤

    I think Aaron has a point about tearing out the lawn and starting fresh from scratch. He’s so good at that and has had quite a bit of success. The result in the long run will be an easier time of installing irrigation and a uniform lawn where the leveling imperfections can be fixed.
    If you decide on shade trees, may I suggest for consideration horse chestnut. There are several varieties to choose from that come in varying sizes. From extremely large, medium and small. They have beautiful flower spikes for a couple of weeks in the spring and produce beautiful mahogany colored “buckeyes ” that can be used in crafting. Fall and flower colors vary depending on variety, and they are tolerant of high to low PH. I know they do well in your area, but in my opinion are under utilized. I think Aaron would like the ginormous ones maybe in a more open part of the property.
    Meanwhile, everything you’ve done looks so GOOD and you guys should be so proud.
    Benjamin is growing into such a wonderful young man!!! Also must bust your button with pride. 💚💚💚

  • @lizm2147

    Love the walk through of ideas for the new grass area! I think you should just plant one shade tree on the left and leave openness on the right as you are looking at the Hartley. Two trees would seem too formal for this area and you already have enough formality around Hartley. Also if you plant one shade tree you will have the weight of it plus the weight of the willow on the other side. Informal visual balance. You gardens are really becoming beautiful!

    Consider putting a hard rubber wheeled, sturdy but pretty bar cart right by your kitchen door. I did, and now I load up the cart with plates, flatware, glasses, food, napkins, S&P, etc. and wheel it down walks and even across grass to eat lunch or dinner anywhere. It makes dining al fresco so easy and clean up and "carry in" even easier.

    May I suggest something? If you can buy additional umbrella covers for the centre of your bistro table, please consider it. It’s a small piece that can be lost easily. Once a line of furniture is discontinued, it will be almost impossible to find them to match your set. I hope this is helpful.

    Maybe put a couple of large pots where you are thinking about putting the 2 big shade trees to “live” with it a bit. The shade trees do sound like a better option than the 2 pillar type evergreens the shade sounds like the most important reason for the trees. Thank you for taking us along for the process. Hopefully our comments will help and not hamper the decision process.

    The randomness is what we all do, so no worries. 😊 I enjoyed seeing your thought process with a new space. The rain tree is majestic and the petals dropping look like a new mulch design. Will those petals stain your seat cushions? Also, something to consider if you were thinking about a fountain in the center of your brick area.

    Hey love all your videos😊 so I've heard you say before that you don't want any views blocked of the Hartley, so I was thinking Putting shade trees in front of the Hartley might block the view from the house to the Hartley?

    Speaking from the perspective of a senior and looking out for your parents, single stones are very hard to walk on. Of course you don't need to make those considerations, but you may not have thought of that. You are such a great designer, and I can't begin to imagine what goes on inside your mind all the time.

    Marker 11:07 to 11:13 so lovely - in 6 seconds here you are around all your plantings with your children(most beautiful blooms of all) at your feet spinning in joy. You are blessed Laura by Father God indeed.

    Thank you for the comment on the sweet pea Old Time! It's out of stock most places on line, but Seedsday had some :) We used a sod cutter to peel up rolls of our lawn years ago. That was noisy, but not as labor intensive as going by hand. The benefit is that you can donate the rolls of grass to friends that need it.

    That is one lucky girlfriend! That is a beautiful bouquet. I love that your videos show the kids playing and helping in the yard. You are doing things right and letting them be outdoor kids is the best! Keep up the good work. 😀

    Laura, leave lots of open space to keep your beautiful view of the Hartley. Be carfeul about planting too many trees near the sightline view of the Hartley. Photoshop is your friend.

    I understand wanting more shade, especially where you live. However, I do think it would block the Hartley too much. Could you stager them? Put the one on the left back in the bed further in the fireplace bed and maybe another popped to the right that is a low weeping tree? weeping evergreen?

    Loving the arrangement and Benjamin’s! So cute. With the pathway I think you should just do one tree. Thank you for sharing your plans with us!

    Love the video on planning the space. Regarding the additional trees, it’s a hard call. Lots of trees are nice. But I somehow am thinking one tree on the left is better. You can have balance without symmetry. I love the idea of maintaining the open sight to the Hartley. As the garden bed to the left is widened, you can layer the plants from tall shrubs including one large tree down to the walkway. With low garden bed on the right which then transitions into the kidney shaped lawn. I am sure Laura will be able to work either option beautifully though.

    It's really interesting listening to you exchange ideas and plan the new layout. I remember you saying you were having some work done to the house. Would that work impact what you are planning now? How do you decide what order to do each project? I've learned so much through watching your videos - right from when you were working from the porch at your townhouse! The fact that you show the failures, as well as the triumphs, has given me the confidence to have a go - and now I love my garden! Thank you to you and the team.

    Good morning! Randomness is good, it’s life. The new bistro set is beautiful. Love the lines of the furniture too. Both areas are looking so pretty. BTW did the young man get his flowers for his date?

    The new bistro and the furniture set around the brick patio in front of the Hartley makes me so happy! The love of trees, shrubs and flowers grows every time I watch your shows. I feel so rejuvenated and inspired. Thank you so much Laura and Aaron! Forever Grateful, EB 😊❤
