Always loved that song. To me, it was a defiant declaration to the world that, even if he was alone and insignificant to others, he was still a person and still mattered. "I am, I said, to no one there, and no one heard at all, not even the chair" has to be one of the saddest lyrics I've ever heard. This would be a rabbit hole well worth the trip.

To properly listen to Neil you have to turn off the lights, get comfortable (preferably laying in the floor) and prepare yourself to be a different person when you get up. You can't just have him playing in the background and think you have heard Neil. You don't listen to Neil, you experience Neil. Once you have entertained him for a private concert in your home and cried or sang when appropriate, you have finally heard Neil.

Neil Diamond was born in Brooklyn 1/24/1941..to Jewish immigrants from Poland...he received a $9 acoustic guitar for a birthday gift...and at age 15 wrote his first song 'Hear Them Bells'...while singing at his High School there was a classmate he wouldn't formally meet for another 20 years..that was Barbara Streisand...
In 1958 Neil entered NYU pre-med to become a doctor but medicine didn't interest him as much as music..he dropped out at the end of his junior year just 10 credits shy of graduating.. music became his world..working in and around music..writing and performing...
Throughout the years he had ups and downs.. appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand..and in 1966 recorded his first album...
Neil also made appearances on other variety shows..wrote music for other groups/singers and even musical scores for films as well as a short foray into acting... however acting wasn't his strength and decided to stick to music...
Neil was well loved for his musc and still today new listeners are drawn to his melodic style...

When you have a chance, you should check out "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", a duet by Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1978.
Funnily enough, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" was written by Neil Diamond with Alan and Marilyn Bergman, and was originally released by Diamond as a solo track on his 1977 album "I'm Glad You're Here with Me Tonight." Early in 1978, Barbra Streisand covered the song on her album "Songbird." These recordings were spliced together by different radio stations, creating unofficial duets, the success of which led to the studio bringing both artists together for an official duet recording. 🤩

I was fortunate enough to see him in concert, early 1990s. He was showing his age, but his voice was still as strong and as clear as it was in the 1970s. I saw a few of his stages a decade or so later and could hear his voice lost much of it's 'texture' for lack of a better word, he still sounded good but age finally caught up with his vocal cords. Back around 1972/73 I fell in love with his voice and I think his Taproot Manuscript, Moods, and Hot August Night (live) albums are my favorites.

Movie The Jazz Singer had some great music. Got to see him in concert several times in the 80s and 90s. Always a great experience. Back in the day when you got in line for tickets the night before. They handed out numbers for you get in line later. One time a friend had a much lower number than me. He invited me to get in line with his group. On my way out with my tickets, I went to the end of the line and gave the woman my number, giving her chance to get tickets before they sold out. She was nearly in tears.

Neil was the songwriter and The Monkees were the original artist for "I'm a Believer" -- a song that you probably only know from the movie Shrek. If you are not familiar with The Monkees, they were a hit TV show in the 60s about a young music band in an attempt to cash in on the Beatles craze at the time. The Monkees was a sitcom and the band was fictious at the start, but later they went on to be a real band and have a lot of hits. MTv had a Monkees marathon back in the 80s that introduced The Monkees to a new generation of fans and they had a resurgence as a result.

Can't tell you how big Diamond was in the 70s. There was a song in the top 10 every couple of months (some he wrote for others). Holly Holy in a live concert video would be tremendous for you, I suspect. Best.

Besides his own hits, he was a songwriter for other people as well, including I'm a Believer from the Monkees (covered in Shrek),

Sweet Caroline Da-DA-DAH -- yeah. I believe he had 38 top tens. He wrote much music for others as well. I see a lot of others have listed some of his MANY hits...
I think his later live performances show his age and health; so look for something from the 70s or 80s. Hot August Night was a live album full of bangers. You'd like Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show.

I am not Neil Diamond's biggest fan, and I hope never ever to hear "Sweet Caroline" again, but this is an awesome song.

Solitary Man, Brooklyn Roads, Shilo, What a Beautiful Noise, Forever in Blue jeans, Play Me, Gitchy Goomy, Soole Mon, are some of the songs I think about. BUT, the song you referred to where he wore a sparkly blue shirt was America from a movie he was in about him being a cantor in a family that came here from Germany during the Holocost era. Oh, and also Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, etc.

When Neil wrote this song he was going through a severe emotional problem that's why that's why singing about what he's going through and he was told that song wouldn't do anything because of the one line about no one heard not even the chair he was at the top of the world but he was so alone did he had nowhere to go and no one to talk to
