If a tree doesn't have enough nutrients to grow to the potential that it should but there's enough to get it started now once it starts and stops because there's not enough nutrients for it to feed on to get bigger. And how's it ever going to get big enough to give something back to the soil and to the land for fruits and regrowth? But if the soil gave more nutrients then it can get bigger and have fruit. Then the fruit can germinate and regrow and as the fruit goes to the ground the nutrients from the fruit go back into the soil and give something back so it has enough to give back again and keep the cycle going. Just like a relationship or friendship. When you keep giving to somebody then its going to be able to give that to you. Just Like a relationship or friendship it's just like a little sapling you have to nurture it in order for it I keep growing until it becomes mature becomes mature you got to keep giving to it for it to get back to you. As you said, just be a good human. Have a blessed day

Very dated: "The rents are low." Compared to San Francisco and NYC maybe, but that's about it.
I don't think he was talking to anyone which is why he kept saying "to no one." This is why he was lonely. The chair is like the line in a King Crimson song, "I speak to the wind/The wind cannot hear."

Live at the Hollywood Bowl in the ‘70s.
Many of his songs have 2 versions, the ‘Soft Soulful’ version and then the ‘Harder Rock Vibe’.
“Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show” is a prime example.

Interesting that you weren’t a fan because I really didn’t care for his music when I was a teen in 70s either and looking back I can’t even say why. Maybe it just wasn’t “rock n roll” enough and no doubt I didn’t appreciate or understand the lyrics.

This is my favorite Neil Diamond song because I've been in that place where I've talked to "the chair" and cried out to "I Am". I know this song personally. But he has SO MANY incredible songs. He wrote poetry not just lyrics. What a gift to us all he is.

  • @crispmom

When Neil says "not even the chair," he's indeed talking about therapy, but he's talking about a specific Gestalt technique used in psychotherapy called the "empty chair technique." It's where you express your thoughts and feelings as if you were talking to a specific person. Even though that person is not present, you direct your words and gestures at an empty chair and imagine that person sitting in it while you talk. When Neil wrote this song, he was going through a depression. A long-term relationship had just ended, he'd become famous, and he felt a bit lost in adjusting to the changes.

That audience is pulled right in--you could hear a pin drop while he's singing. The sign of a great storyteller and musician.
So many of us are born in one place and end up another, and feel like we are rootless. 'LA's fine but it ain't mine/New York's home but it ain't mine no more' says it all.
I think maybe the empty chair is someone he loved who left. Maybe someone who couldn't handle his loneliness. JMO.
    Great song, great reaction :)

His voice is so impressive and I have never seen so many women crying in one place. If you are interested he has so many amazing songs. People that are his fans have been fans for decades. Before his retirement due to being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he had been performing and writing for over 50 years. He could fill an arena anywhere and any size! “ Play Me”was the beginning of my love for Neal Diamond’s music-and I don’t care what the critics say, I loved “The Jazz Singer”! My only regret is that I never saw him perform live. With such a large catalog of music to choose from, please consider giving Play Me a listen, it’s just beautiful! Another one to consider is Crunchy Granola Suite, from his Hot August Night (fr 1970’s) album, a fun, get up and dance song! This always puts a smile on my face. There are sooo many great songs from this album! It’s a shame they never filmed this concert, I have the 2008 dvd, but this one is a classic!

You always criticized for a long time because of his music but his Diamond Head fans as like myself have stayed with him and stayed with him and his audience has grown and grown and grown he was the number one selling song artist that sells out two shows within 10 minutes and I'm not lying. I am a said is his signature song but he wasn't wanting to go out and party and he wasn't wanting to have friends around that was going to take his money he was more or less talking about he's lost two marriages because of his touring but he loves his people and he loves to make them happy play... man of God....!!.
