My older brother, Jeff [RIP] gave me a vinyl 45 rpm single of #CRACKLIN' ROSIE when I was 8 y/o. This was in 1972. Neil was 31. I was immediately smitten with Neil's rich baritone vocals ..but when I saw just how damn good looking he was, I was in love! He was my first crush. I began collecting his records, pictures, news articles, interviews, memorabilia, etc etc from that moment on.
I've seen Neil Diamond 22 times in concert. Never missed a tour starting from 1980 to July 26, 2017. All the shows were held at the Seattle Center Coliseum/Key Arena except for one, which was at the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, WA.
Neil's career spans 5+ decades ... 1966 ~ 2017. Beginning in 2016, Neil and his life long band [Damn near. Majority of his band members had been with Neil for 40+ years!] embarked on a world tour marking Neil's 50th anniversary in the business. He was wrapping up the tour here in the states in July of 2017 before heading to New Zealand and Australia to close out the last leg of the tour there when Neil was sadly diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Not sure how long Neil had been experiencing symptoms, but on the advice from his doctor, Neil had cancelled & refunded the shows in New Zealand and Australia. In his entire career, this was the 3rd time Neil had to cancel LIVE shows. The first time was back in the seventies when he collapsed on stage at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. He had been experiencing numbness in his legs but chose to ignore it. When he collapsed, he was unable to move his legs. He underwent surgery, where the doctors removed a cancerous tumor from his lower spine. Neil had to learn how to walk again. I believe this is when #I AM .. I SAID started coming to life on paper. The second time, Neil lost his voice. He reimbursed everyone who had tickets for a couple cities. Of course, the Parkinson's diagnosis was the 3rd time.
Neil is a class act. A superb performer. A brilliant songwriter. There will never be another like him. With multiple personalities, young and old, Neil is sorely missed by millions of his fans all over the world.
Forget Sweet Caroline. Neil did lots of wonderful thought provoking life songs in the 70s which were far superior - this is one of them and his personal favourite song he wrote.
A&D, there are SO many beautiful Neil Diamond songs for you to discover. So many! And he was an excellent performer as well. If you get a chance, you should listen to his duet with Barbra Streisand called You Don't Bring Me Flowers. It's a heart breaker. Thank you sharing this one. 🙂
Another live performance I'd recommend is Phil Collins doing In The Air Tonight. Top notch performances.
Neil Diamond has so many great songs for you to explore. Try "Sweet Caroline" next.
Sweet Caroline, You don't bring me flowers, Cherry Cherry, Forever in blue jeans.........so MANY!!!❤❤
There’s a video floating around TH-cam of an interview with Neil on the Irish Late, Late Show where he goes into the details of how this song came to be.
It was during a time of an existential crisis in Neil’s life of wondering what his place in the world was. Writing this song served as a catharsis for those strong emotions. It is a great interview. It shows Neil as the quiet, gentle man that he is. A man with the gift of putting into words and music the feelings we all have but often can’t express.
Some of my favorite songs of his are Play Me, Morningside, Pretty Amazing Grace, and Beautiful Noise.
Had a friend who was an Army brat. He was a metalhed but he loved this song. He said it was the Army brat national anthem.
Neil Diamond is my 93 year old Aunt’s favourite artist. She is awesome and so is Neil. Thanks for the memories
Nice!! THAT'S cool....tearfully good, he is!! I love him, too. I find that many artists' voices will FIT the range and tone of a song.
Neil is talking about touring but , me being a solo sailor, at 64, i don't know what I would consider "home". Just visited my parents in N. Ga, USA 🇺🇸 where i grew up , it wasn't the same as when i grew up. My boat is my home. As Capt. Jack said, Chance ( my Pearl ) isn't just a boat. It's freedom. The world is my home. Capt.Bob, SV ( Sailing Vessel) 27th Chance, Tampa Fl , USA 🇺🇸 ✌️
Neil Diamond a class act. Has it all. One of the very best over the years.
I didn't think that it was one of his best performances. You should listen to the studio version of the song, it's much better.
Or the live version on Hot August Night (1972).
One of my favourite Neil Diamond songs, wonderful artist.
Neill Diamond is the most beautiful singer songwriter of all time.
Home is my wife. Born in Boston, lived in San Francisco and suddenly no place felt like home.Through my twenties and early thirties just lost. My dad was raised by his grandfather and grandmother who immigrated to Boston from Poland in 1905. He (my dad) always said because he never knew his own father he was grateful to grandfather and grandmother for giving him identity, This song always brought a tear to my old man's eye...when my brothers and i would see it. Love Neil Diamond
Live versions sometimes just don’t live up to the studio versions
The version of this song on the Hot August Night live album is just sublime. If I could go back in time to attend a concert, it would be to experience him live.
I relate to this song VERY MUCH.🙏
Brilliant songwriter. Legend. Love this song ❤
lovely reactions. That song gives me goosebumps.
Neil Diamond is a living legend. He has one of the largest repertoires of any artist ever.
I saw him in concert and he sang for over three hours! "Play Me," "Cherry Cherry," "Solitary Man," "Brother Love's
"Traveling Salvation Show."
Reminds me of my dad, he used to play Hot August Night and I, even as a rock lover, loved it because of my dad. I lost him in Dec 2022 aged 87, and this will make me cry for him. Wonderful music and I still remember the lyrics after decades. Amazing songwriting!
A phrase we grew up with, was "You can never go home again" It's so true.
Neil is a gem. ANY song. 😊 No other voice like that, except for Surreal Neil from Super Diamond.
Oh my dad and uncle Philip”s fav artist
This is the best reaction I’ve ever seen to this song. It’s my fave of his
This is the only song i have of Neal Diamond i bought it when i was down in the South of England for 20 yrs , then i moved back North in Yorkshire and was a new person , makes me emotional this one
As long as the 2 of you are together you will be home.
Always love to hear you two . Neil Diamond is much underrated outside of a few classics but he was a top class songwriter and performer . I f you get the chance , the live album " Hot August Night " is a classic complete-gig live album . Glad to hear you have moved to Romania , sorry to hear you are no longer here in the UK . Our loss . If you get the chance , may I recommend Kris Kristofferson " To Beat The Devil " from his album " Me and Bobby McGee " . Dedicated to his friends , Johnny and June ( Cash ) . it is a song of love and critical thinking and never giving up on the things you know are true .To Beat The Devil ...
I love you guys and the honesty of your reactions. Thank you, so much!
Neil’s journey enhanced our own, touched our hearts and allowed us to appreciate his musical genius and vocal gifts!
Please react to Janis Ian. At 17. Lyrics are fantastic
"Not even the chair" is such a simple yet powerful line.
I know exactly how you feel about not knowing where you belong. I grew up in Toronto Canada and now I live in the USA. Last time I went home I felt like a stranger and maybe it's because I've lived in the USA for a long time now and so many things have changed. I love this song because Neil has captured a feeling that so many of us have. His voice gives me chills!!!
I loved your reference, to sweet caroline, im from the UK, and both seem to have had good memories, bu that sweet caroline, which is very british, warmed my heart, even to have that small memory
Seen him live, brilliant concert in Manchester.
You should check out his movie "The Jazz Singer"!
Home is where the heart is
There's something powerful when a man stands there and proclaims "I am.....". That part of the song hits me deep. You two are awesome, even though we're half a world apart, we are together. Wonderful.
Thank you ☺️ Warm wishes from Romania 💚
I was born in Louisiana 1n 1946, left home at 18 to see the world and have seen quiet a bit of it...the U.S. too, now I'm 78 living in Arizona...but Arizona is my house...Louisiana is my home!.
Home is where the heart is.
Enjoyed your reaction to my favorite Neil Diamond song. Another Diamond song that might be worthy of a listen is "Play Me", the live duet version with Shirley Bassey, my second favorite Neil Diamond song! Thank you for posting.
AGAIN… I have listened to this song for decades but until I see and hear it through someone else, I guess I didn’t really GET IT before. Watching Andre listen with his heart wide open always touches me and illuminates the lyrics ❣️✌️🎶🐾🍀
they are so cute together...
Neil Diamond is my favorite singer/songwriter. He is giving us a look into his psyche. No matter how famous he became. And all the millions of gold and platinum records he sold. All the sold-out concert halls and stadiums. The many variety television shows and movies he was in. He still had this feeling of loneliness that just wouldn't let go of him. "I Never Care for the Sound of Being Alone"-ND. When speaking to his therapist about this problem of emptiness and loneliness. Not even the therapist was listening to him (The Chair). Love your reaction to one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all times. Epic.
I love y’all’s reactions!! From Memphis, Tn.❤️❤️🤘🏻
You have a better understand of music and expressing your feelings that any other channel.
Thank you for enjoying our videos 😍
Neil Diamond : Hot August Night, live at the Greek Theatre in LA is one of music's most momentous occasions and albums (well, the album is a double). If I ever have long travel to do it's one of my 'ride or die' albums.
Hi guys from Phoenix Arizona, Love staying in touch with you two makes me happy! Love Ya!
Thank you 😊 Greetings from Romania 💚
Best reaction couple ever. love you guys.
Awesome. Thank you ☺️💚
geez...this song makes me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME..ugh
He has said this was the hardest song he's written .. the emotions .. took him months to write
Beautiful and thoughtful reaction, thank you 😎
It's about time for another Janis Joplin tune (a Neil contemporary). You'd enjoy "Maybe" from March 1969 on the Ed Sullivan TV show. Super soul back up band and Janis in full voice. You'll be surprised. Thanks again for the great reactions. P.S."A" I get MORE teary eyed than you on emotional songs. And "D" you are my seer when discussing your heart and mind feelings.Marv
I will say, I'm 70's kid, born in 70, growing up I heard a lot of good music from my older sisters and mother and father. Neil is an early memory and motivated me to write music early on.
One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "I Am, I Said" is one of my favorites. It is almost an autobiography of Neil's life. Other songs are "Cherry, Cherry", "Sweet Caroline", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Holly Holy", "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", "Forever In Blue Jeans", "Longfellow Serenade", "Desirée", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" etc. He has sold more than 130 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable. Sadly he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2018.
And he wrote the Monkees hit song Daydream Believer
Add to the list: Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show, Soolaimon, Come Play Me, Red Red Wine….
@@dantallman5345 I bought early seventies the vinyl album Tap Root Manuscript by Neil Diamond. Sold it six years later to a friend who was a big Neil Diamond fan. Maybe I should regret that.
Favorite singer
Like the saying goes. "Your home is where your Heart is".
He's great. Great voice!
I really enjoyed watching this great performance by Neil Diamond and this is one of his best efforts. You know you have heard a really great song when it truly touches people and this song did that with many. Awesome guys. Neil is one of the best songwriters.
I was nine when this came out and my older sister was a fan of his. She bought all his albums and I got to listen to them a lot, since she and I shared a bedroom until I was twelve. I loved his music, but this song took on a whole new meaning when I had to move to Texas for my senior year of high school after living in Virginia for five years. My dad was in the Air Force. I’ve never felt like I really fully belonged anywhere, although I’m pretty settled in after twenty three years back in California, where we lived when I was a kid (and where I became a Neil Diamond fan🥰).
"The chair" refers to a form of healing therapy where one is simply speaking their feelings about what they're going through to an empty chair.
Neil had just gone through a divorce before his career landed him in L.A., and was having a very hard time adjusting.
neil made a wondeful film, back in the 80s, the jass singer with the legend lawrence olivier (spell check), called the jass singer, about a jewish culture, but he wanted to break out and sing, wonderful movie
The Boston Red Sox baseball club and their fans adopted Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” as a sing-along in the middle of the 8th inning of every home game since 2002. By 2013, so called true fans got tired of the song and the “pink hats”, what they saw as Johnny-come-lately fans and those who came to Fenway Park for the experience rather than rooting on the ball club. Then 2013 and the marathon bombing happened. Boston officials did the unthinkable for a major city. Boston was locked down tight while authorities successfully hunted down the terrorists responsible for the attack. I live in Rhode Island and worked in Boston at that time. Afterwards, the first game played at the park was remarkable for two events. Given a microphone, superstar player David Ortiz would announce to the crowd in a nationally televised pregame ceremony that “This is our F* king city, and no one is going to dictate our freedom”. It was an incredible moment and one the FCC refused to fine Ortiz, the Red Sox or the television station for obscene language, suggesting in this case it was acceptable . At the same game, an older gentleman in a ball cap appeared at the box office. “I’m Neil Diamond and I need to sing my song tonight”. And in the middle of the 8th, he was escorted to the field and led the crowd in the singing of Sweet Caroline. The Red Sox, expected to be a mediocre team at best played their hearts out for Boston that year and would win the World Series. And I’ve never heard a disparaging word about Sweet Caroline since.
Times change. I had no move away from L.A. because the rents are now far from low. I was born and raised there but could no longer afford to stay. L.A.'s home but it ain't mine no more. By the way, no one can give smoldering looks quite like Neil Diamond. "Shilo" is a great one, or anything from his live album "Hot August Night"
He had terrific concerts. One of the best I’ve ever been to. It lasts at least 2 1/2 hours
I am an aussie ❤ neil diamond
Loneliness is loneliness. I think some people feel this way even when they are home. It is a beautiful song and as usual, you guys just get it. Great job.
BIG HUGS to both of you. God love your hearts. This song does evoke emotions, and especially for you both, having relocated.
Your home is each other !
All through my teens Neil was my favorite singer, I had all his albums and over the following decades and all the changes in my life I have continued to love him now that I am almost 62. He has such a huge catalog of wonderful songs, I hope you will explore much more of his music!
This was my Dad's party piece when he sang on stage. Neil Diamond was a fantastic singer and song writer. He wrote I'm a Beliver a big hit for The Monkees, done a duet with Barbara Streisand, other great hits were Cracklin Rosie, Holly Holy and Sweet Caroline and many more.
Home is where my pillow can be found. I've moved 13 times since I graduated from College due to job changes or career moves. One more may lie ahead and I can see why he described his restless life....
Suggest Sweet Caroline next. A huge hit, still being sung , for example, at every Boston Red Sox home game by the entire crowd.
Great reaction!
I love your reactions! And to the gentleman, I see it in your eyes when your heart is triggered, and that is the way to be! Always keep that heart open my friend!
One of my favorite singers with one of his best songs. ❤
Great video. Can't go wrong with Neil Diamond. Love you guys, you all so sincere. Keep up the great videos. Mark from Edmonds Washington.
i love neil diamond
Ohhh, now I see you already reacted to this 1 month ago. So I'll watch that. Sorry I missed it the first time around!
LOVE NEIL!!! This song is a personal favorite of mine....the LYRICS....and, HIS VOCALS!!! SO GOOD!! :)
Beautiful, beautiful song
This song becomes more and more difficult to listen to as I get older .
The chair was a reference to a therapist who might as well be an empty chair. Your deep understanding the core of a song and your empathy towards the singers and writers have been quite special.
I look forward to every reaction.
Now the chair line makes sense
Although never given any love by critics and rockers like myself, he consistently put out great songs year after year. Not cool, but very talented.
The normal crowd always picks sweet Caroline etc. yea it’s good but this man made so many songs and several are amazing. Of course Im sure nobody is as boring as me to listen to a new album almost every day. Try…LOVE ON THE ROCKS. Or SEPTEMBER MORN…..two other great songs by Neal.
The thing id say as somebody who watches your posts is that you listen to people who can tell a story in the form of music and narrative word, IE Neil Diamond tells a story Mark Knopfler tells story you feel compelled to listen
Rents haven't been low in LA for a very, very long time
Hello from germany to both of you. I was a Sailor most of my life. Left my hometown at the age of 18 and lived a life as a Gypsy at the oceans. I am 59 years old now but I allways kept my hometown deep in my heart.
1st class. More Neil !
I still feel lost, I go 'home' to the UK & feel lost even though my friends & family are there, & don't feel at 'home' in Oz..."I've got any emptiness deep inside"...I'll work it out eventually, I guess🤷♂️😵💫🙏
Oh my gosh THANK YOU for reacting to this beautiful song. Neil Diamond is such a musical treasure. Especially for the older generation. I definately understand how you feel about the feeling of what a person considers home. ❤ Stay safe
I always forget how amazing Neil Diamond is. Not a single bad song, he's brilliant
We had 2 of his double album.
1 got a dart ricochet. Hot august night
The first time i heard this song it broke me. I finally felt like someone else in the world understood how lost, how lonely, how without a home i too felt. All these decades later i still feel the same way. I've lived all over the world. I have so many wonderful memories of wonderful people, different cultures, and friendship. But, i still feel like a man without a home, without a place in the world. This song is one i know in my heart and soul. It's beautiful! That's why it's a great song. Virtually everyone can relate to this song at some point in their life.
"They" say you can never go home again. Truth! I left England and lived in Germany for 4 years. Then I moved to the USA; firstly Alabama and then California. I've loved my 43 years in the USA but I regularly find myself longing for "home" but "home" doesn't exist any more. My grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles are all passed and my 6 siblings are scattered around the UK with their own children and grandchildren. Their lives have gone forward, as has mine but I long for a place and time that I can't have back.
Thank you for sharing. Much love from both of us 💚
You should definitely check out 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers' with Barbra Streisand or the beautiful 'Hello Again' from the movie The Jazz Singer.
Another great song from Diamond.
Neil diamond is still kicking at eighty three years old! Sweet Caroline was a song he wrote about Caroline Kennedy when she was just a little girl watching the funeral procession of her father President JFK. After his assassination. The most beloved president
I love you guys, 💞. When you react to the songs y'all tell your truths of how you feel. 🥺. Please can you do. ( Man in the middle ). Maurice Gibb. Of the Bee gees. A song he wrote when he recovered from alcohol abuse. Thank you 🙏🙏💔
I never went out and bought Neil's Tunes but he certainly has earned my respect over the years. I do see why he's so famous.
Not the best version of Neil's signature song, but thanks for the reaction. There's a lot of other Neil Diamond songs to react to, he really is one of music's best singer-songwriters and performers ever. May I suggest Brooklyn Roads, or Solitary Man?
